Adaptive Insights, founded in 2003, provides a system for budgeting, forecasting and reporting. It’s suitable for a wide variety of company sizes. Delivered over the Web in a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model, it eliminates the need to purchase new hardware or software. The interface is designed similar to Excel, capitalizing on familiarity to speed up the training process.

Adaptive Insights is said to require only about three weeks of support, on average, for successful deployment of the software. Automatic upgrades allow new features to take effect immediately for users, eliminating some of the slowdown associated with traditional upgrade processes.

Adaptive Insights can serve the needs of many business sizes, including small companies, nonprofit organizations and companies with billions of dollars in revenue. Functionality includes budgeting and forecasting, reporting, dashboards, financial modeling and administration.

The system serves the specific needs of business services, health care, manufacturing, nonprofit organizations and even software companies. Software companies make up the most populous user base of industries served, with over 150 software businesses as customers.

The Adaptive Insights system has an extensive partner network of value-added-resellers (VARs) in many different countries. Implementation, training and support services are also provided.

Very knowledgable and showed us numerious demos. The sales staff did an excellent job.

Little more expensive then we thought. There are other products out there that are cheaper, but we felt this was the best product for what we are trying to get done.

Recommendations

This should help your budgeting process. There is a night and day difference in this product than just using Excel.

It is easy-to-use so we don't need any expensive technical people to maintain it. Our management and finance team own the entire solution. It is also very scalable from small organisations to large multinational multi-billion dollar revenue organisations. Scalable in the context of - price, performance, functionality and integration.

A few months ago I would have said the reliance on Java, but that has now been removed. It's happy days for us Adaptive customers.

Recommendations

Look at the heritage of the company to determine the guiding principles and future direction of the company. Also ask to see the solution administration functions. Some companies will offer a free POC or Trial using customer data. They go away set it up, play it back to you. This is done deliberately to hide the complexity and difficulty in setting it up. Customers are then left with a solution that is set up but they are reliant on technical people to maintain it going forward.

The product is easy to use and easy to adapt to new demands. As we continue to learn more about how we can use this product, the work I do compiling data has been decreasing and the time I can spend actually analyzing the data increases!

I would like the reporting of this product to be more robust. It can take a long time to build a report the way you would like it to look and the options for formatting it quickly are limited.

Recommendations

Before you can give a fair recommendation of this product you need to work with someone who can explain its full potential. My company was using it at first for just budgeting, but now I am using it for some monthly analysis and reporting and it works great.

The vendor is small enough to give personalized attention but big enough to handle all sizes of companies. The product is easy to use, scalable, customizable and easy to navigate within.

I would like the product to be more compatible across different instances. Also, on specific sheets, it would be nice to be able to tab across the fields instead of using the arrow keys. In fields where a drop down menu is used, it would be nice to be able to type a letter and then the drop down menu would appear with the choices that begin with that letter.

Recommendations

Be very explicit in what you want the SOW to show. Ask questions. If you don't see the functionality that you want, ask! More than likely you will get what you need.

Simplicity, ease of use. It is easy to navigate. The feel is more like Excel. The reports are also easy to build.

Speed seems slow at times. I also would like to have a dedicated representative from AI to our account.

Recommendations

Make the model as simple as possible. The application doesn't seem to handle a large quantity of data very well.

AI allows for you to build a highly customized model for real-time scenario planning, forecasting and analysis of not only financial metrics, but on the overall operation as well. Through intuitive dashboards with visual analytics that provide drill down capabilities, users can easily participate in complete performance management. The software has allowed finance to become a strategic partner with the rest of the operation.

Adaptive Insights is a great company to work with. They're responsive and treat their customers great. Their customer support is one of the best I've ever worked with. The product itself was very simple to use, but very powerful. We were able to create very complicated models but keep it simple enough for our end users to understand and interact with.

We've had several acquisitions and re-orgs over the last few years, and changing the structure is pretty labor intensive.

Recommendations

Spend a lot of time planning your implementation. The actual set up itself doesn't take long, but you want to make sure you have everything set up at the beginning so you don't have to waste time adding things later.

The customer support that I have received from Adaptive Insights is amazing. I have never had this level of support from another company. There is great follow up and resolution to any questions or concerns.

It works better with Chrome or Firefox Browsers. Performance is faster using these browsers.

Recommendations

My company is very large with several budget managers using several different currencies. We added project accounting to the Engineering personnel and direct expense without having to buy additional add-ons. The basic reporting tool is very customizable and easy to use.

This suite of products have changed the way we inform our leadership of the state of our operations each month. We no longer spend days and days preparing dry financials. Now, we are generating useful statements in seconds along with instantaneously seeing that same financial and operational data visualized in Adaptive Discovery in our interactive scorecard. The ease of use, and the level of support are the two greatest things about Adaptive.

The tools do everything we ask of them, and more. The monthly load of data from our GL and the operational data from other source systems being a manual process is my ultimate least favorite thing. We are implementing the Adaptive Discovery connector so that the data will be loaded in the future at the push of a button. That should take care of it, though. I think if I had to identify my next least favorite thing it's probably the high bar that it sets for all of our other reporting from other systems.

Not only does Adaptive Planning remove the pain of consolidating spreadsheets to quickly roll up our budget, but it also gives the ownership and accountability to each of the users who enter data into the sheets. The software is very user-friendly and utilizes some of the best features of Excel.

Although Adaptive gave us a great deal of flexibility in adding as many users as we needed to allow us to think through the users and the roles, it's a very sales-driven organization, and they were somewhat pushy to have us sign contracts by the end of the quarter in order to fill their quotas.

Recommendations

Conduct lots of research, and demo all the tools that fit your needs to be able to choose the best solution. Adaptive was hands-down the most impressive, and we are very happy with our choice.

This product is quite user-friendly once you go through the product training. I particular like the report feature where you can design the reports you need, and it can replace all the Excel spreadsheets you need to create by yourself with all the formula links.

I think the product would be even more useful if we could fully utilize its budgeting function. However, this is mostly our internal issue rather than the issues with the product or vendor. One weakness I would point out is about the foreign exchange rate that can be applied to the B/S and P/L. The system basically provides two different rates per currency per month (EOM rate and Monthly Average rate). In reality, in B/S, you will have accounts that need to apply historical rates like fixed assets so none of these two rates can be used.

Recommendations

For new users, you need to have a clear understanding of your reporting structure, your chart of account structure, and what kind of information you want to get out from your accounting system before you can structure your Adaptive Planning program.
