Microsoft Dynamics SL is an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system designed for project-based small and medium-sized businesses. The solution offers industry-specific capabilities for professional services, government contractors, distribution, construction management, and other vertical markets. Microsoft Dynamics SL was originally developed by Solomon Software with the title Solomon IV for Windows. Great Plains acquired the company in 2000 and was itself acquired by Microsoft shortly thereafter. Microsoft Dynamics SL is well-suited for businesses with fewer than five hundred employees.

Microsoft Dynamics SL has applications for financial management, business intelligence, collaboration, field service, IT management, and project management, as well as a business portal application. The advanced management edition provides more features than the basic Business Essentials package. Microsoft Dynamics SL can also support numerous industry-specific add-on applications from Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) who have been specially certified for Microsoft Dynamics.

Microsoft Dynamics SL utilizes Windows and .NET frameworks with the advantage of sharing Microsoft as a common developer. The system can be deployed on-site, or it can be hosted to add services like online training and support. The application runs on the Microsoft SQL Server database platform.

Microsoft Project Management software has pretty much had a market monopoly for many years in terms of powerful functionality. However, the choices have become more diverse without sacrificing powerful management features. Also, I have found other applications much more user-friendly with ongoing training support & superior customer service.

Microsoft Dynamic focuses mainly on Sales, Marketing, and Service (help desk) sectors. SL focuses on professional services which are really nice. It's reasonably easy to learn and navigate, all while providing excellent data and reporting tools. It doesn't seem to be as flexible or customizable as Salesforce, but still a very nice option.

Pros

I like the integration with Office 365.

Cons

It's flexibility.

Advice to Others

Dynamics SL is a solid product that is very dependable and flexible to our needs. It has helped accommodate our growth and expansion for years into other geographies and with new applications.

Pros

It is dependable, agile, able to integrate with almost any other solution in our IT footprint and intuitive.

Cons

While it handle's 90% of our business, need to rely on some ISV's to accommodate. They generally work very well together - just another thing to manage.

Advice to Others

Dynamics SL (Solomon) has been around since the 90's and is a trusted and proven product. Just need to find a solid consultant to help stand it up.

Dynamic SL accounting

This is a great product for accounts receivable, accounts payable and general ledger. Not quite great for fund accounting, we have to twist it to work for us to manage the project, fund etc.

Pros

Easy to use, works very well with Microsoft excel. You can copy/paste from Excel to Dynamic for some of the data entry which is so convenient. Customer service staff are very experienced and helpful.

Cons

Reporting is a weakness. I have to work between Dynamic and Excel to manually generate financial statements.

Advice to Others

You have to understand what you are really looking for in terms of functionality. Do your homework.

Complete Project Based Accounting Product

Microsoft Dynamics is the perfect Erp good for Small to Medium project based businesses. We have tested and recommended the product to one of the biggest retail stores in my country covering over 20 branches. The business has had the benefit of using the product to manage it's product lines, marketing, and accounting processes. I deployed the product to manage their finances in terms of retail product invoicing and sales, (Accounts Payables, Accounts Receivables, and General Ledger accounting). The system provides for customized reports and basic project management for marketing campaigns.

Pros

Good all in one product for Collaboration, Project Management, and Financial Management. It's an easy to use the product especially that it brings the familiarity of the Microsoft interfaces.

Cons

Constant lost or missing postings from Point of sale into the General Ledger created nightmares but was resolved with the release of a security patch.

Advice to Others

All in one product good for Business intelligence, Project Management, and stable streamlined Financial Management

This system is very easy to use in a menu driven sort of way. It has good features and not so good features. Hopefully, they are working on a fix for the not so good.

Menu-driven, easy.

Cons

Reports need to be customized, not able to do some year-end reports so you have to do those manual.

I have used this system for over ten years. The system is fairly easy to use.

I like the accuracy of the reports you can run within this system.

Cons

I hate when batches get stuck in unreleased mode or manual checks don't post to vendor history.

My experience has been mixed with this platform. It does the GL accounting part fairly well. IT has limited functionality in terms of effective project management. The system reports are very basic requiring extensive external data manipulation and custom report writing. It's a reasonably priced solution.

- Low Total Cost of Ownership
- Ease of implementation
- Reasonable GL accounting module

Cons

- PM capabilities are very limited
- Canned system reports are limited
- Multi-currency financials are challenging requiring third party solutions.

Advice to Others

- Works reasonably well for limited deployment of 1 currency GL accounting function.
- the ecosystem of support involving consultants for report writing, maintenance, upgrades is still evolving.
- Low Cost of ownership

We have been using Microsoft Dynamics SL 2011 for a while now and it seems to fit most of our needs. It is not super user friendly or intuitive and does take some training and a little time to get into. It is fairly easy to customize yourself if you are a tech minded person. The database is very well documented and easy to navigate which is a huge plus for developing custom reports. There are a couple reporting suites that go with this, we use FRX and like it for the most part. I have built several custom reports using SSRS simply because it is easier and provides easier access to everyone in the company without any software installed.

Project setup is quite easy for users, as is review and analysis. We manage by budget for each project and have never had an issue or need for additional information. Time and Expense capturing by employees is painless and efficient. This is highly important to a project centric organization. It meets our needs and users are content.

Pros

AP, AR and GL processing is straight forward and quite efficient.
Multi-Currency - We use three different currencies, and Dynamics allows us to easily create journal entries, raise sales invoices, and receive payments in any of those currencies.
