Microsoft Dynamics SL is an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system designed for project-based small and medium-sized businesses. It has industry-specific capabilities for professional services, government contractors, distribution, construction management, and other vertical markets. Microsoft Dynamics SL was originally developed by Solomon Software with the title Solomon IV for Windows. Great Plains acquired the company in 2000 and was itself acquired by Microsoft shortly thereafter. Microsoft Dynamics SL is well-suited for businesses with fewer than five hundred employees.

Microsoft Dynamics SL has applications for financial management, business intelligence, collaboration, field service, IT management, and project management, as well as a business portal application. The Advanced Management edition provides more features than the basic Business Essentials package. Microsoft Dynamics SL can also support numerous industry-specific add-on applications from Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) who have been specially certified for Microsoft Dynamics. 

Microsoft Dynamics SL utilizes Windows and .NET frameworks with the advantage of sharing Microsoft as a common developer. The system can be deployed on-site, or it can be hosted to add services like online training and support. The application runs on the Microsoft SQL Server database platform.

This product is a Microsoft product so of course it always being updated and is state of the art.

It is a bit clunky and difficult to customize at times. I wish they would focus more on the specific industries for their product enhancements.

This accounting software does not come with canned financial statements and even though this has been requested for years, it is still not available.

Recommendations

It helps me with entering time from any device.
For my company, less time needs to be invested to create invoices from timecards.
•Project profitability is guaranteed as we do less of the work that tends to lose us money and more lucrative work.
•The ease with which we are able to hide unwanted fields makes data entry simple especially for he users ho don't use computers on an ever day basis.

It is a very intuitive ERP software system that can run very dynamic reports. Microsoft Dynamics SL is a very powerful "out of the box" ERP system. The learning curve can be a bit cumbersome.

It does not work well in our industry. We need too many customized programs, reports, and inventory calculations so the cost of the software (custom programming) has become a burden.

Recommendations

Microsoft Dynamics SL has a very user friendly AP/AR/GL data entry system. It is very easy to figure out and makes data entry a breeze. They have great customer service!

There is still a lot of manual work to produce your monthly/quarterly/yearly financial reports. You are able to export the data into Excel to get the reports you need but there is not an easy/automated way to get those reports.

Recommendations

Know what you need, how you would use your software, get references/feedback from current users and talk to the customer support team. If you are looking for a great data entry system with a decent priced unlimited user support, then this is worth looking into.

I love the fact that Dynamics SL is extremely customizable when it comes to fitting my business needs. It is backed by arguably the biggest software name in the industry so the overall quality is definitely apparent.

To many extra processing steps, example, after you have entered a cash transaction, then you have to release the cash transaction, then you have to release it from the GL, then you have to post to the GL.

Dynamics SL is very flexible, and it handles government contracting very well. SSI does a great job of implementation and ongoing support. It is especially helpful that they understand the nuances of government contracting.

Being very flexible is good news and bad news. It means you have to be more thorough in your setup to make sure you get things the way you want them. It also means that the support consultant is critical to getting it right. SSI is great at this. Just wish there were more like them.

Dynamics SL is very flexible and great for government contractors. SSI is great in those areas as well. They have been extremely helpful, from planning and implementation through continual support.

Recommendations

Make a list ahead of time of the critical areas of financial processing. Go over the list and make sure the software meets all your needs.

The product is written by one of the best names out there, Microsoft, and is supported by a great team. Getting a hold of them is easy and working with them is a pleasure.

It is built with today's technology, using SQL and Crystal; tools that my IT staff is familiar with. The database is easy to navigate and the programs can be easily integrated with our own home grown system. Microsoft is always trying to improve the product and in this latest release (SL2015), they have really hit a home run with some of the new tools, features and enhancements!

Recommendations

Before you can evaluate any software do your homework. Specifically identify your business processes and needs from the ERP system. Do not get "sold" on features or nice looking tools, but rather can it meet my basic set of requirements. For our company, Dynamics SL does meet those needs.

I like that it's flexible, customizable, and has deep project functionality and excellent financial capability. They have a strong series of partners for installation and support. Reports are written in Crystal and can be modified.

Recommendations
