Project management software for construction helps contracting firms stay on-budget and on-schedule by tracking key items during the building process. Given the complexity of construction projects, project management software comes with a variety of features and functions to meet the demands of commercial and residential jobs. Advanced construction project management software systems include modules for scheduling, accounting, bid procurement, document management and estimating.

On a high-level, construction management software is designed to reduce operating costs and promote efficient business processes. This is achieved using features such as:

  • an online repository to share project information with constituents and to enforce accountability;
  • project scheduling to manage projects along the critical path;
  • job costing to ensure projects stay on budget;
  • document control to manage change orders, RFIs and submittals, and;
  • integrated accounting for accurate cost-to-complete estimates.

Just as every construction project is unique, your construction firm has specific technology requirements, and it’s important to choose a system that matches your needs. There are over 100 construction-specific project management applications on the market. Sorting through the options is difficult as there are programs designed for specific trades and company sizes. What’s more, project management software can be deployed as a client/server or web-based solution.

Here we present a project management feature checklist to help you narrow down the options. Simply list your top 5 products in the header row, then place an “X” in each box when the feature is offered. Keep in mind, this is a not a comprehensive list of all features to look for, but it is a good starting point.
