R.O. Writer is an on-premise auto shop management solution suitable for small to midsize businesses. It is compatible with Windows operating systems and provides tools to manage time tracking, service writing, accounting and inventory.

Users can draft estimates, schedule work orders and accept payment from customers through a single interface. Communication tools assist with customer outreach. R.O. Writer includes an employee time clock to track technicians' time and calculate their efficiency. It can further schedule an appointment with the technician and send appointment reminders through email.

A Smart eCat tool integrates with part suppliers and allows shops to make purchases. Users can search for parts and order online.  R.O. Writer enables service dealers to connect multiple stores through a single solution and search invoices by region or store.

R.O. Writer offers customer support over the phone, via email and through on-premise training sessions.

BAD TECH SUPPORT

Good, but uninspired program. Decently easy to learn. Does everything we need it to. Better than paper system we had previously.

Cons

Tech support. There are other issues, but the tech support is very bad. Don't get me wrong. The tech support isn't so completely horrible that you will be forced to switch to a different program. It's just good enough that you will probably stay using their program because you don't want to go through with retraining your technofeeb employees on a new system.

Let me elaborate on how bad they are:
No online knowledgebase.
No user forum
No email blasts on known issues occurring
Calls to tech support have approximately 20% chance of being kicked out of the queue and hung up on because nobody picked up the phone after 5 minutes of waiting.
Calls to tech support have a >25% chance of not returning your call. Yes, I really am saying they sometimes do not call me back. Frequency of failure does increase as the severity of the problem decreases. In other words, they've always called me back on critical issues. But on very minor issues, they've failed as much as half the time to call me back.
Calls to tech support rarely reach someone who can fix your problem. They almost always have to call you back.
Tech support consistently and repeatedly fails to return your system environment back to it's original configuration after remotely logging in. For example: regedit is often left running and UAC is never turned back on before they log out of your system.

The second worst problem is lack of user input. There are several areas in the program that work...but require many extra steps that could be reduced with minor coding additions.

Lots of reporting capabilities, SmarteCat feature saves lots of time, scheduler is very convenient. Overall it gives us much more capability than our AllData system, and it has also helped us create estimates much faster than before.

Cons

You can't be in SmarteCat and be doing anything anywhere else simultaneously. Similarly, you can not be creating or editing an appointment in the scheduler while editing a part, labor line, vehicle, or customer page in ROWriter.

Pros

Very Powerful, can do many things with it. If you're a techy person you will like all the features of Rowriter, but AMS can guide you through the tech end of it, if you're not techy.

Cons

Very Powerful-need to know how to use it properly-setup is crucial- you need some one like AMS to make this "tool" perform at a 110% and get the most of value out of your investment.

Pros

Smart e cat function make it easy to check multiple parts suppliers at the same time on one screen.

Cons

Constant problems with corrupt files. Level one technical support can rarely fix the problem and tier two takes too long to call back and sometimes never does.

More money and it saves time on the front counter as well as digging into the numbers. I can tell where I am making money and where I need to improve. It gives me more time for family.

Pros

It makes me money and saves tons of time. There are many things I like about this but most important is the money and the time. The people at AMS are the best. They know their product and answer their phone.

Cons

The only thing that could be better is if it was free. I like the people I have to deal with. It is stable and dependable.

Pros

It has a lot of useful features. The accounting side is confusing but in depth. You are better off with a different program.

Cons

Once installed the program continued to freeze. I was told to buy a high speed router. After that the program continued to freeze the computer. After a year of not having full functionality as well as the freezing we decided to go elsewhere. There tech support can not fix all the issues you will have and they will continue to charge you for things you have not received.

in depth features and data base coverage. Its an advanced program designed to fully intergrate all your shop's features .

Cons

If you are a serious computer geek and don't mind spending many hours learning how to use this program and fix data losses you might enjoy this program. I have an IQ of 150+ and spent 18 months fighting this program before I gave up. Now the cheapskates want to make me pay for the rest of my 36 month commitment. Their support staff is mostly incompetent , everything needs to get kicked up to level two.
One of my favorite moments was when I asked to be able to get a report showing me the customers who came through referrals, a category they had already built for me. Level two support told me it would take at least two weeks to provide that data and the cost would be extra. Annually. Kikui provided it in 15 minutes at no additional cost and provides the reports weekly.
Both my service writers HATED the program. It might have been a contributing factor to one of them qutting.

This software has been life-changing for a business. Was not a believer until I was properly trained. Now it works for me instead of me trying to work with it. Get the training it's worth every penny.

Pros

This product can turn your day-to-day work into something that's not so time-consuming and gives you the ease knowing exactly where your money is and where it is coming from. You most definitely will need training it is that complex but also very easy once you know how to use it. To get the training I highly suggest AMS. They definitely go out of their way and spend the time to answer all the questions that you may have and most of the questions you didn't know you didn't have. The program is completely adaptable to all genres of industry whether it be automotive all the way to golf carts. You can make custom jobs and use the inventory to truck parts that has absolutely nothing to do with automotive. again I can't stress it enough you need the product and you need AMS!!!

Cons

Before being properly trained on how to use this product I had plenty of Cons to put in this field. Now after going through the training at AMS my issues have been resolved.

We have been in business for 30 years. We have tried many different shop management systems. All had some definite positive attributes but with each there was always a downside.
ROWriter has been a game changer for our shop. It is, most importantly, a stable program. The estimating is streamlined. It has excellent security options, ( absolutely a necessity if you are not onsite daily). The accounting link saves me sooo much time. One of the most important things I can say is that the customer support from ROWriter, and more specifically AMSROWriter, is five star. It is rare to find such a dedicated group of people all in one location. We currently have this program at both of our repair facilities. One is transmission specific and the other general repair. Excellent choice for both!!!

Been with RO writer for 10+ years now, have used at 2 locations and very expensive to purchase in the beginning now they charge for every upgrade and every update it seems, support is slow at best and these guys are still behind the times, I've heard they have been sold again, now to a Chinese company hopefully they will go cloud based and will get better. Not a very happy user! About ready to bail!

I took over an existing shop that already had RO Writer running. The reports that this software creates is very powerful and our CPA who is an Automotive CPA that has hundreds of shops always shows me something new whenever we are working on our #'s. RO Writer's support and AMS's Support is excellent and always there to help. It is a stable program for us and we have 6 computers running on it. When we open up a customer or vehicle info we input all the information into it and that helps for future lookup. It is one of the more pwerful software packages out there. We love it.

R.O. Writer is not a good choice if you have more than one shop. We have spent countless hours and lots of money buying and installing new equipment to "fix" the problem. It has only gotten worse and every time they fix one thing two more things quit working. I would not recommend it to anyone. It has no way of combining your shops history and data base and makes you look very unprofessional when a customer comes in and you can't find them after they were just at your other shop a month before. Also be prepared to pay big money just to update pricing from your vendors. They will tell you that it is complicated and you may mess up the system. This is something that is a very simple process in most POS systems. There seems to be only one person left in the support department that knows how to fix anything and we are still waiting after three weeks for a call back. If you don't want to loose your service writers then stay away from R.O. Writer.

R.O. Writer made running my business easier from day one. After adding the Smart Ecat feature, it saved me even more time. Quotes and repair orders are so much faster, I wish that I had installed it much sooner. The customer service received from R.O. Writer and AMS is second to none. These people delivered everything they promised and bend over backwards to accommodate my needs. Would highly recommend this software to anyone in our industry.

WEVE BEEN USING THIS PRODUCT FOR YEARS, THE OWNER OF THE REPAIR SHOP HAS INVESTED OVER 30K INTO NETWORK, SOFTWARE UPDATES, AND THAT DOESNT EVEN PUT IN THE MATH FOR DOWN TIME, WHICH IS GENERALLY AROUND 1 HOUR A DAY. WHO EVER THE PROGRAMMER IS FOR THIS COMPANY SHOULDNT BE CREATING SOFTWARE PERIOD, BECAUSE IT IS COSTING SMALL BUISNESSES THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS DUE TO INCOMPETENCE. When I moved from my prior management system (which was an outdated DOS system) to RO Writer, I must admit, I was having doubts that I did not do enough research and look at enough systems. What really attracted me to RO Writer was the Smartecat functionality. At the time, we were preparing estimates by hand. I really liked the idea of, within a few clicks, I was able to prepare an estimate of a job, know who did or did not stock the part, and know which vendor had the best pricing on the part. Now, after using RO Writer for more than five years, I know that I absolutely made the correct choice of shop management software. While the learning curve was painful at times, I now know that I selected the best shop management software. I purchased RO Writer from Automotive Management Solutions. The AMS support is second to none - better than the RO Writer support. The folks at AMS know RO Writer inside and out, and now AMS has an online users group. Thank you RO Writer and AMS for your commitment to my success.

RO Writer has a lot of benefits and some negatives as well. Marketing, smart Ecat and financial reports are strengths. Some weaknesses are scheduler and writing tickets are a little harder when you have a big ticket and the customer wants it separated on the different jobs (it can be done but takes a little bit of time when you are on the phone with customers). This program has a lot of features and the three days of training gets you going but really taking advantage of more of the features. A company that has really helped us with RO Writer a lot is AMS (919) 363-6234 (who sell the software and teach you how to use it to some of its potential with classes for owners and service advisers and a private facebook group where you learn a lot from other RO Writer users). They also do customized forms (with your logo) to make your invoices look great. RO Writer support really helps getting you back up running if there is an issue or update and there is training videos. Anytime you switch software there will be pain (LOL).

ROWriter is loaded with features and there is soo many ways to customize it. We have used it for about 7 years and continue to learn new ways to use and customize it. Their support service is excellent, also. I can also highly recommend the expertise and staff of AMS. They have become a very helpful resource as we continue to grow and change with current technologies.

I believe this system is the best on the market. AMS has helped when we have a problem and has been there for us. I have shown my system to other shop owners and they loved the repair order because its clean and easy to read, customers like it for the same reasons. Support is good most of the time and very responsive when system is down or theirs problems.
