Cognos was great for controlling the FP&A budget being used and having it update in real-time for a number of users to use. Could add ease of copying and pasting within to enhance the product.

Pros

Easy to use across an organization to keep things updated in real-time and organized.

Cons

Cognos has performed splendidly, met and went well past our expectations. We use it for modeling, budgets, and forecasts. We exist in a sector with a lot volatility, so being flexible is everything.The architecture of the application can be tiered nicely for performance. This allows us to scale the application to support our growing user base. Cognos' mobile features are mature and we do use that as well.

Cognos makes it easy to design reports that match the look-and-feel required by the client. Report rendering time is also very fast. Browser support can be touchy and Dynamic Cubes are very hardware intensive.Cognos has strong out of the box capabilities with a wide array of add-ons, and good interoperability with other IBM analytics and data suites

Pros

Compatibility mode queries allow for custom ODBC and JDBC connection to made, so even if there is no native compatibility other databases can still be used as a source if needed.
Dynamic Cubes are capable of querying against millions of rows in seconds when properly set up with sufficient hardware resources.
Standard Reports are snappy, returning data and rendering quickly, as long as the pagination is kept to reasonable quantities.

Cons

Due to Active Reports packaging all of the data in the file and prerendering charts, file size can get quite large (easily several megabytes) and the initial load time can be quite long when opening it. It is best used for basic overviews and other times when some "flash" is needed, but not a large amount of data.
Configuring the interoperability with TM1 and SPSS is a little more on the technical side than most other tasks.
You could call the development process "Front heavy" meaning most of the development will be modeling. This means that it will take longer to end up with visualized data than other tools.

Advice to Others

Cognos has a robust set of capabilities out of the box with a wide array of add-ons and interoperability with other IBM analytics and data suites. IBM provides plentiful whitepapers, redbooks, and other information resources for clients and developers, as well as excellent technical support. Combined with a proper balance between ease of use and customization when developing and an affordable licensing model, Cognos was a superb choice.

This product / release is a great self administered SaaS BI tool. Great for the creation of modules , reports and visual dashboards.

I did not like the experience with this tool, I needed to develop a dashboard and it was really complex for me, it was not intuitive like other BI's that I've used, the interface looks old, probably it's because I'm used to work with newer technologies and Cognos seems to be in the past and it require more time in learning curve

Pros

Even when I did not use the OLAP connection I know is posible to do it and its a good advantage against other BI's, it has a great caipability to support big data models and for reporting purposes is a fine alternative. As an enterprise solution it will provide all the scalability and secutity that you'll need.

Cons

The process to develop a dashboard was not as quickly as I can do it with other tools, personaly it was not a pleasent experience, I'll have to spend more time and continue using it to see if eventually I find it better.

Advice to Others

Analyze very well the purpose of usage and cost for it, the price is a factor to consider and specialy if you are a small - medium business.

I like its functionality and different features. I also like the ease of use.

Cognos's support sometimes is not as it should be. The support should be quick and accurate, and Cognos should have more error details to track down the solution. The majority of time, the error doesn't provide meaningful info, so it is always difficulty to track down the solution.

Recommendations

We should have more and more functionality into this BI platform to make this Cognos BI a powerful tool. It should be capable of all analysis aspects to strengthen your business and its performance.

Active Reports, Dynamic Cubes and Prompt APIs are some of the features that are helping a lot for meeting visualization. Latest introduction of RAVE added a lot of visualization that helped streaming and better visualization.

What I like best about Cognos BI is the ability to use the Analytics reports to easily create whatever kind of analytical view I want and to change it on the fly. It is so easy to use. The Cube dimensions, levels, categories, and measures give me the power that I need to run any report I want and to create new ones as the business changes.

There is a lot to the installation of this product, but it's worth it.

Recommendations

The standard reports can be really good, but I prefer the Analytical Reports/Analytical Cube Views by far because of the enormous flexibility they have.
