Workfront (formerly AtTask) is a cloud-based project management solution that helps teams  to prioritize, route, manage and report on their work. It is suitable for businesses of any size and industry including IT, architecture and accounting.

Users can access a library of standard reports or customize them. Workfront offers tools to help visualize the work lifecycle so users can maintain project schedules and budgets. Users can drag and drop tasks to assign them to team members, shift assignments and organize workflows through the visual interface.

Communication tools allow employees, account managers and executives to collaborate, assign work, track deadlines, check status updates, deliver work and manage reviews and approvals. Resource management tools allow managers to assign tasks, track performance and allocate resources. Methodologies such as Agile, Waterfall and others can be implemented with Workfront, and the platform is designed to scale along with company growth.

Powerful project management software

I used Workfront for two years and was continually amazed at how feature rich it was. The Very extensive backend to manage resources, evaluate budget usage, forecast completion timelines, etc. However, it wasn't the easiest to use... mainly because there was so much functionality it was hard to get your head around it all. However, while I was using it they released a "team home" product that allowed you to give certain "light users" a frontend that had less functionality but everything most basic users need. This was a great decision of theirs as it truly helped with user adoption.

Pros

Very powerful software! Rich gantt charts, resource/capacity planning, etc.

Cons

Sometimes too hard to use because of how to feature rich it is.

Advice to Others

If you're a power user and have a dedicated project management team, then this is the software for you!

Great if you are accustomed to Salesforce

This product is excellent for those who have worked with Salesforce. The product generates those same reports and material that you become accustomed through Salesforce. Additionally, it is great for document retention. The dashboards are also incredible feature. Once again, it is definitely a Salesforce type platform, so it may take time to get used to, but these are great features.

I used to use it to track projects I was working on at a marketing agency. I also used it for keeping track of my time. I used it around the time it was transitioning from AtTask to Workfront. The transition brought some good changes but I still think more can be done. The user interface wasn't very sexy. We constantly had issues with replying from emails and having them show up on the task/project.

Pros

Managing my time sheet was pretty easy to do. I liked being able to customize my notifications.

Cons

The default settings for notifications was annoying. I believe they were all checked which meant I got an email every single time anything about the project was changed. I think the user interface can use a facelift.

Advice to Others

It's a good product for tracking projects but I'm sure there could be something better out there.

I used this tool working for an agency and we set it up for a very large client.

There are many features. We changed things weekly to get consistent reporting and needed items. So it can be customized to fit any organization.

I would say there is a learning curve but once you understand what you're looking for the tool will hum.

This is truly an enterprise level of project management tool. The feature sets covers the whole life cycle of the project management, from roles responsibility, planning, scheduling to task level management. The user interface is rich and easy to use once you are used to it. The collaboration functions are nicely designed and works very well.

The price is quite higher than other project management tools. The learning curve is bit steep if you want to use it efficiently.

Recommendations

Start with the trial and get familiar with the UI. Use the more advanced features, like APIs, only after you have a good understanding of how the system works.

The vendor provide clear focussed definition sessions, shaping the solution and the business requirements, but where they excel is their quick delivery approach, spinning up your environment quickly, and a 2 to 3 week consultancy later your up and running.

The product is flexible, and becoming more flexible by the release, tailor to your specifics but utilising standard functionality which is user friendly and easy to use.

They could probably provide some more advanced tutorials into supporting resource planning, and portfilios but the initial training provided through their sites are good.

Recommendations

Have a look at it and see for yourself. But it is a quick solution to some basic problems in the office. It will also support a staged implementation of functionality, which works well for companies slow to change.

This product has fantastic reporting, customization and is easy to pick up quickly. The education and support are also fantastic! I typically get an immediate response whenever I have an issue which is rare! The education and training portion of Workfront helps get people up to speed on the tool quickly. Trainers will address any ongoing pain-points that may come up that are relevant to how your group uses the tool.

I absolutely love the user interface and the ability to customize layouts to display exactly the information my users need to get their work done efficiently. Allowing field editing inside views and dashboards is pure genius. Creating custom forms is easy and gives me the flexibility to collect all of the information needed for tasks, issues, projects, requests, etc., and the ability to update these as my company evolves. Reporting is very powerful and we are now using charts and graphs to quickly identify projects and tasks that need attention.

Customer support and other services like training, webinars, consulting, user forums, etc. are all top rate. LEAP 2015 was truly impressive and I highly recommend attending LEAP 2016 (I know I'm looking forward to it!)

Nothing major comes to mind. There were a few UI-related features that I felt were missing, but the most important ones (to me) have been addressed. Occasionally there are some minor bugs after a software upgrade, but they are always fixed very quickly.

Recommendations

Ensure you have someone who has the time to learn the system and administer it properly. The software is very configurable and spending some time optimizing it for your business processes will increase adoption and value. The software is great, but it's important that everyone uses it properly, which means a good understanding of requirements, use cases, etc. should be made before implementation.

A great end-to-end solution which is very customisable. We have created a workflow that goes from initial client request, through scoping, costing, delivery and post-project reporting on customised metrics.

It is a US-based company, and being in the UK, access can sometimes be a bit slow, though European located servers should be up and running soon which should help.

Recommendations

It is not perfect, but it is the most fully-featured, easy-to-use and customisable work management software that I have used. Take it for a test-drive, I highly recommend it :)

Personally, reporting is the most useful for me. I run reports daily to glean information for resourcing and future project planning. For our editors, the project plans are vital to manage 100s of tasks in one place and assign work to their team members.

Cons

It can be slow and temperamental at times. Dragging and dropping tasks is a no-no! You never know where it will end up! It is largely intuitive but I have found that it is only by trial and error that I have learned how to ask for what I want to see in reports. Not always immediately obvious. Updates can affect reports also and render them useless / not working as they were before the update.

Pros

It provides a user friendly way of obtaining project visibility and also drives accountability across delivery teams. I was responsible for lobbying for Workfront within our business and this has shown clear benefit and results.

Cons

Reporting could be more user friendly; would be great if dashboard views could be replicated as reports that could be distributed as PDF's for example. Being able to cut and splice project data would be a powerful sell to key stakeholders.

Current report functionalities do not provide adequate flexibility. With limited resources I'm the only admin and I'm not technical but it would be good to be able to do some basic API myself. Difficult to reconfigure the tool following structure changes/a lot of resource changes.

WorkFront seems to have a lot of reporting capabilities and has great functionality that helps managers see the workload of their team IF the manager is willing to input and keep up a lot of detailed information. However, this is not as user-friendly or as intuitive as other software programs I've used. The staff seem to be good about building out personizec features and reports for the company but I haven't dealt with them so I don't know how easy they are to work with or how quick of a turnaround time they've had. This is not made to be a multi-use program meaning it's made to manage tasks and employees' time and workload but not document storage, communication portal, or for front facing the customer. It is a complex software, which means it can do a lot but it takes a lot of time to get to know it and use it well.

Overall, we have gotten a lot of value out of Workfront but we have had to do a lot of customization to get the executive level, rolled up reporting we need. Glad to hear that color selection is coming and the ability to report across objects! Would love to see a time entry license type for users that log in about 50 times a year. Currently pricey.

would like more flexibility with layouts of dashboards. right now you have a few to select from but I would like the ability to choose how many reports to show horizontally anywhere in the dashboard vs. the pre-defined templates.

Cons

Workfront has come a LONG way in the last 3 years. If you saw it before and havent looked recently, take another look. The tool is a great place to call your single source of truth. By configuring to your needs, you can make it easy for your people to keep their data up-to-date.

While the basics are great, and some extensions are really nice, it provides only rudimentary capability to track business value of the projects. For that, you'll probably need to go offline or create additional custom data elements.

Pros

Highly flexible. Easy to navigate. Love the ability to easily provide a customized front end for groups of users via the layout templates. On top of all that, the training and support is excellent!

Cons

Limited capability to track planned and actual benefits.
