Planning Center by Ministry Centered Technologies is a suite of Web-based applications developed to support team leaders and members in planning, scheduling and managing church programs and events.

The Planning Center’s “Services” module supports tools to keep media organized. Upload and tag media and files to quickly locate the right song or video for your service, then schedule and stay in contact with team members overseeing or participating in that service.

Within the “Resources” module, leaders can reserve rooms and publish event calendars to effectively manage church resources. Every event, room and resource has its own calendar feed that syncs with calendar programs, including Outlook, iCal and Google Calendar, to eliminate scheduling conflicts. Calendar feeds can also be set up to display on kiosks, so church members can see upcoming events displayed on tablets, touchscreens and televisions in common areas.

Finally, “Check-Ins” offer a way to manage child security, attendance and volunteer participation. Set up and customize check-in stations on iPads, iPhones and most Android tablets—then integrate with printers to create labels that display a child’s medical notes and emergency contact information.

Planning Center offers multiple packages and price levels to fit faith-based organizations of all sizes.

We have been using Planning Center for almost a year. Our congregation has grown a lot this year and this software has kept up with the new services and groups we have added. The different modules that you can add or remove help with the overall functionality. It lets me use features I want and lose the ones I don't need. The mobile apps are particularly exceptional for keeping track of peoples information and checking them in at service.

Pros

The bang for the buck. Many of their features are free depending on the size of your congregation and are reasonably priced as it grows.

Cons

They are lacking mobile apps for some of the modules

New improvements are consistently rolled out and the communication around each release has been excellent. Online help is valuable and readily available. Managing Volunteers with Ease

I have been a Planning Center user for a few years now and I am so happy to share about this product/service. Managing volunteers is a difficult task for any leader, but Planning Center provides the tools necessary to manage teams of volunteers quickly and easily.

Pros

Communication with volunteers and staff is excellent. Scheduling requests can be sent in batches which saves so much time and it makes planning ahead so much easier.

Cons

The mobile app for iphone has been known to have a bug here and there, but this is such a minor issue to run into when it does happen.

Advice to Others

If you're a church admin looking for a software platform that will increase your productivity and lessen the labor burden of scheduling volunteers, this software will change your life!

Everything is in one place, need I say more? Okay, I will anyway. I can plan services, keep my volunteers organized, communicate with them and I have check-ins ALL IN ONE PLACE. Phenomenal.

The extras that cost so much "extra"... As a small church it's more cost effective for us to find other vendors for them.

Recommendations

Don't be intimidated, it is really easy to use. Since I use it for Children's Ministry that is what I can speak to- and for those purposes I find this tool to be incredibly helpful.

As a user and not an admin I found the product easy to understand right away. The interface was simple and intuitive. I like the block out dates feature so I know I can take off without being scheduled.

The update e-mails are a little busy they could be cleaned up a bit to only show relevant data.

Although our church uses Planning Center for a variety of things, I use it in our worship ministry, and it allows us to all "stay on the same page". Our church meets in the auditorium of a school, and as such, we only have the building on Sunday mornings. Because of this, our worship team cannot rehearse during the week. With Planning Center, I am able to "post" the music for several Sundays in advance and our team can use the attachments to listen to each song via an .mp4 file, and see chord charts. When Sunday arrives, everyone has been able to prepare on their own and we do a quick run-through. I can schedule team members and see who has responded and who has not. I can add notes to each service for the team members' info. My team members can block out certain dates when they know that they will not be with us. I like the fact that there are different user levels so that some people can actually edit and schedule, while others only have viewing permission. Planning Center also allows us to input each person's contact information, so everyone on the team has the ability to reach others if necessary.

The mobile app is not as responsive as I would like, but it works.

Recommendations

Take advantage of some of the free webinars that Planning Center offers. They are extremely informative, and teach you a lot of tips and tricks and how to best use the program for your particular situation.

The interface is very intuitive and easy to use, but still remains powerful. I have been very pleased to watch Planning Center grow into what it is today. When it first came out, I was not too fond of it. But Planning Center saw the changes that needed to be made and made them, something that most CMS companies cannot or will not do. I am a proud user of Plannig Center and would recommend it to any church, large or small.

I really wish there was a user forum. But aside from that, Planning Center is great!

It revolutionized my planning and communication process. It made it so much easier to see who is serving when and to know whether or not they've been sent certain communication pieces and resources. It also makes it simple to collaborate with others on the planning process.

Pros

I've been in church music ministry for over 14 years now. I've tried and evaluated several pieces of software over the years. I always came away with the sense that software packages certainly worked for someone, but I would have to change several things to fit into most of them. That was until I found Planning Center. During my first contact with the product, I was thinking, "Who has been spying on me and conspiring to make my work simpler?"

Planning Center is designed for church event & volunteer management by people who operate in that realm. They understand the challenges and needs of people serving in churches, and their software makes it incredibly easy to keep people in the loop and keep spots filled.

Their customer support is second-to-none. In their early days, they had some issues with their hosting company. They live-tweeted as someone drove to the server farm, pulled their servers, and drove to a new hosting company that offered guaranteed up-time. We all understand that stuff happens. They won a lot of loyalty as their customers saw them doing everything humanly possible to make their product reliable.

Cons

One feature I'm hoping for soon is the ability to incorporate calendar invitations into people's serving schedule. As it stands now, you can subscribe to a calendar of your PCO activity, but it's a separate calendar. Not everyone will do that. As a result, I've been inviting people to Google Calendar events based on who is serving when, just to try to make sure it gets on people's schedules. It would be nice for that functionality to be integrated into PCO instead of doing it separately. When someone accepts an invitation to serve, they get a calendar invitation sent to the email address they indicated was their primary calendar. Other than that, I really have no complaints.

That you have to jump from tab to tab when you want to do something different for the song sections listed. Like when I want to add a file or something. I have to go to the song tab and not able to do it from the song on the plan.

I really like that not only can you have all the music available for a worship set, but also include videos or mp3s for examples.

Cons

Every once in a while it will not show me any of the services info. I eventually learned I can scroll up to refresh which will fix it, but it can be pretty frustrating.

The benefit of using this software is that the team is all on the same page for each week.

Pros

I love that we can use planning center to all stay on the same page. We all know when we need to be somewhere and have something prepared. The ability to communicate in one place with the schedule being readily available is great.

Cons

Planning Center is a little difficult to navigate - sometimes the schedule will refresh in one section and not in the other. This can get a little confusing as I won't always know if I'm on the schedule for that particular time frame until it is able to adjust.

I primarily use the service planning aspect of planning center. I love it! It's so easy to create a service full of multiple elements. And within those elements, you want add notes for each department specific to them and their roles in the service. Planning center has through through all of these details and makes it easy to explain to each role what their expectations are throughout the service. And their LIVE feature is great to keep everyone on the same page while the service is happening. Great product.

Planning Center is a great volunteer team management cloud software. Our church uses it mainly for our worship and production team scheduling and for Sunday service planning. We have recently started using the software to schedule our children's ministry volunteers. The software has tons of features and it is growing fast. We really like the fact that when you schedule individuals they get a text, email or both... and they also get a reminder of their scheduled ministry. What we'd like to see is some more work at making the software more easy to use and more intuitive. It is at times cumbersome to setup a simple schedule, settings menus are hidden until hovered over, and a few other things could have been tweaked to make the software better. Overall however, we like Planning Center and will keep using them for their scheduling and notification abilities.

Pros

Ability to Schedule Volunteers, text reminders and notifications of volunteer scheduling.

Cons

Cumbersome menus. Hidden settings icons. Many steps to setup teams.

Advice to Others

It would be great if Planning Center worked on making their software more intuitive instead of expanding to child check-in and room scheduling until this was polished a bit more.

I've used PCO Services for years, but decided to look into its People app (CMS) and was enthralled by its ease of use and its cost: free! There are a few things it doesn't do, but they are quickly becoming the one stop shop for church tech needs.

Pros

Its integration with other PCO apps.

Cons

I wish the People app was a little more customizable. It lacks some essential features, but is free, so I can't complain.

Our church has been using Planning Center Online (Services) for a long time now, but we recently made it our main Chms. We have really enjoyed it and we love that their team is constantly putting out new features. That being said, the giving side is still lacking things like Capital Campaign management and their web page that you use to sign in to give and look at groups is very plain graphically. It would be nice to be able to embed those things right into our own website.

I am booked as a worship leader through planning center frequently, and I am so pleased with how easy it is to use. When the church on the other end is inputting all the needed info, it's an excellent resource!

If you are a church that struggles with scheduling volunteers and also knowing the flow of a service, I strongly suggest Planning Center!

It's easy to use and also sends emails for you when booking your volunteers. If you see some holes, you can quickly ask other people or have a plan to get the position filled. Apart from the volunteer interface, you can create a plan for how each service will run and delegate minutes for each task. Keeping everyone on-track is made easy with the help of this tool and you can even 'play' the plan so you know where everyone needs to be and what is happening on stage during the service. This allows you to adjust time- slow down if running ahead or speed things up in order to get finished on time.

We've used just about every other major church management software and PCO is far and away the best solution available today. It is cleaner, easier to use, more structurally sound, and meets the needs of virtually any church function.

Pros: Beautiful integration between products. People, to scheduling, to giving, to Groups... all amazing individually... insane together.

Cons: More API integration would be great and I know it's being built out. Groups & Registration mobile apps not yet launched.
