The idea is good - site for organizing all the documents and workflows for a project, pity execution is so bad. Downloads are painfully slow, customer support is literally non-existent. I contacted customer support about it taking all day to download a document and they just closed my ticket without any communication. Obviously, the customer support staff don't want to deal with problems they can't fix.

I found Aconex to be quite functional and easy to access. It's workflow and document control systems were quite robust. I particularly liked Aconex Field. It is a punch list or snag list tool that uses QR Codes to ID building area, smart phones and tablets to take pictures that you can annotate by drawing on the picture with your finger, and then assign it to a company or even and individual. Great, easy to use product.
Incredibly robust and adaptable to any situation
The very robustness makes it time consuming to change for different approval processes.
I would still recommend it.

This review is based on the early stages of implementation and configuration. Aconex guarantees you that they can have your system up and running within a matter of a few weeks. What's not taken into account is the configuration based on your organizations needs and defining your internal processes. Without going through their professional services, you are left to determine what works that can encounter perhaps unnecessary pitfalls. Given our current status, we are still struggling to pull together a system that is fluid for us as well as the contractors and how we collaborate. We are dealing with multiple projects that compounds the situation and would have liked to have been provided more guidance throughout the development phase. To be fair, there needs to be direction and consensus from within in order to produce a workable product.
Communication and retention of emails delivered to and from the contractor within the system.
This software is not intended for an overall program management software and does not have a means of tracking action items, financial, change management. etc. The biggest hurdle to overcome is that this is not a folder based structure.
Bottom line is know what you are buying. No software product is perfect and requires alot more work than any sales person is going to tell you. Know exactly what you want the software to do, and what you want to have at the end of your project.

Poor support, with a tendency to blame customers for problems, along with poor design aspects (doesn't officially support multiple tabbed windows for examples) that actually creates problems.
Relies heavily upon users having many processes in place to support using it, as there is not intrinsic document management or project management functionality.
Aconex themselves don't provide very much in getting to grips with it, or how to user it. Sink or swim...
I could go on...
Look for both document management and project management funcionality in a product like this, particularly for complex projects.
Aconex is otherwise just a document register with email.

I like the concept of an application that manages all the documentation on the project, but the quality of the service is so bad it's absurd. I can't download large files because server keeps disconnecting. I've tried contacting customer support but I can't even get them to acknowledge me - they just close my ticket without communicating with me.

Recently we chose Aconex Company as a solution for our Document Control System including keeping online record for a few years so that all of our staff, consultants, clients, sub-contractors, suppliers can easily access the system.
It is one of the best systems for our company since all of the options are very easy to use (No need for many hours of training). Anyone can operate this system with 30-45 minutes of training.
Highlights - Any size email can be sent through Aconex, can easily access anywhere in the world (only internet required), Site Engineers can easily access the software while they are on site through iPad/iPhone/smartphone. Online review of documents (instead of printing many hardcopies), we can review and comment on drawings online. This will decrease the workload of document controllers.

I used Aconex for about 3 years and for 100+ different projects. I loved that project set up was so simple and that I could customize the fields to meet my needs. The Customer Service teams were always available to assist if I had issues and would take comments from customers into consideration when improving the overall system. It was great that improvements where rolled out across all users.

It delivered everything as promised. Major pros are - its accessibility from anywhere, the ease of adding new users, the commercial arrangements.
Search engine, mail and notification facilities are easy to use and very effective. I am yet to try out the feature of packaging up all the data and storing it an archive somewhere but I have no doubt this will work well.
Compared to other products - typically Corporate in house products - this product is by far superior in all respects. I highly recommend it.
