Co-construct Software

Co-construct is a robust web-based solution developed for custom builders and remodelers. With Co-construct, custom contractors have access to a solution that addresses the unique challenges faced by companies in this niche.

Co-construct is a collaborative solution that helps businesses coordinate their selections, schedules and photos while also improving client relationships with more dynamic, interactive communication. It's best suited to companies with less than $10 million in revenue seeking minimal IT involvement; the web-based deployment eliminates the need for a large hardware investment. It integrates with QuickBooks Desktop, QuickBooks Online, and Xero accounting systems.

Co-construct is accessed from a login form on the contractor's website. From here, team members, subs and clients can access their own secure portals to address tasks unique to their role - tracking change orders and project budget, update online schedules, share files and photos, enter jobsite logs, and access cross-project reporting. This data can be downloaded at any time and Co-construct offers mobile apps to update your schedule, retrieve files, review selections and more.

This online portal is branded with the company name, colors and logo for a more professional look and any outgoing messages and handouts also include the company brand. Builders also get their own, branded mobile app for use with clients.

Co-construct brings together all client and sub communications into a single location; everyone can still use email, but Co-construct's patented communication feature captures and organizes these communications online, so finding something takes seconds. With email and text message alerts, clients, team members and subcontractors alike stay informed of project updates in real time.

Co-construct is backed by an expert support team with free help for all customers and they actually host complimentary, twice-weekly webinars where users of the software can meet and share ideas, trade tips and get help.

Co-construct

Ease-of-use

It has a very basic home page that is easy to get around and keeps our projects organized.

Functionality

It has everything we need: scheduling, communication, and selections.

Product Quality

It's very good. They roll out updates occasionally to address any issues. They always give you plenty of warning ahead of time, and there have not been any shutdowns or glitches after updates.

Customer Support

I talk to excellent tech people on the other end of the line every time I have a question.

Likes Best

It's very easy to learn, and our customers have learned it pretty quickly as well. The training videos they have set up have a wealth of information and are very good at teaching you how to get around and use the program effectively.

solid software

Ease-of-use

They have a good help desk, but the program is intuitive. It doesn't take long to learn it.

Functionality

The estimating software needs a little improvement. It also needs to work better with QuickBooks.

Product Quality

The accounting side is the weakest part, which is very important in construction or any business.

Customer Support

They have a sense of urgency when I call. 100% of the questions are answered by real people! There are no transfers to India.

Likes Best

I like that it's easy to use.

Likes Least

It requires internet access. It's great that it's portable, but you need to make sure you have access to wifi or a hotspot.

Recommendations

Consider the price and amount of time you have to use the software. You need to be dedicated to get the returns of this investment.

Jonathan -- Thanks for the feedback. I did want to clarify on your statement about the "estimating needs a little improvement." We don't actually have an estimating module...yet. It's in development as we speak, so stay tuned. You'll get that as part of your subscription. But, it sounds like you're taking advantage of the selections, change order, and budget tracking features that certainly should support what you're doing elsewhere with estimating. Co-construct isn't accounting software, but with our QuickBooks integration, you can do things like pull your budget actuals to track spending progress, generate invoices for change orders, and display customer payments. We're glad you're happy with the system, and it sounds like the other things you want are on the way!

Revolutionized project management on a custom residential home

Ease-of-use

Depending how tech savvy you are, this product has high capability. Limited tech skills also limit your ability to maximize the value.

Functionality

It really helped everyone stay on the same page during construction. It also kept the client informed, and project managers had ease of scheduling.

Product Quality

It is well-designed. The mobile app could use some updates to provide more ease of use.

Customer Support

The training offered is fantastic, and email updates are sent to ensure you are well informed.

Likes Best

The all around product every company should own

Ease-of-use

It's user-friendly, as everything is at the touch of the screen.

Functionality

I am able to track in percentages where a project stands at any given time.

Product Quality

This product has functionality for every business that needs to track timeframes and costs to better organize a project.

Customer Support

This product's customer support is thorough and to the point. If there is a conflict in a part of the software, the support to remedy it was forthright and expedient.

Likes Best

I love the ease of use and the quickness of being able to jump from project to project to see where each one stands in way of timeframes, cost, etc.

Likes Least

There isn't anything that I like least, as all of the software is great. For me, the time it takes to adjust my percentages on each schedule is only thing, if I were to say anything. But I am also a new user, and being new, it takes time to master.

Recommendations

Take the time to read the hints you have set up for them. It saves countless hours of trial and error. Also remember this is an aid to better track what is happening within each project you have.

Co-construct review from a total beginner

Ease-of-use

It's very intuitive. It takes a minimal amount of time to learn and be able to use.

Functionality

You could probably spend hours and hours and thousands of dollars developing your own tool, and you would probably miss something that this software nails.

Product Quality

No glitches. It hums along flawlessly. I've never experienced any downtime.

Customer Support

They are there all the time. They offer classes and online tutorials.

Likes Best

It's pretty simple to use. I was given a 5 minute overview and have had no issues. I have been able to completely document my project in text and photos. The photos have really taken a major role, as this project has become a major remodel with lots of long term water damage. We've been able to show the client issues without him having to visit the location.

Likes Least

I'm not sure there's a downside. The software does what it says it should, and I've never had any downtime. Sometimes, if I'm downloading info, especially photos from my phone, it can slow way down.

Recommendations

Take the tutorial. Walk through all the aspects and learn what this product can do. It's really user-friendly. It tracks multiple projects and keeps track of decisions.

Good construction management tool with much potential

Ease-of-use

I think more importantly than the ease of use is the functionality. If this is met first, then the ease of use should be easy to adjust.

Functionality

I have submitted an extensive detailed list of enhancement requests to Co-construct, so to avoid repeating myself too much, I'll summarize:
1. Expand each view to the full edge of the screen.
2. Separate the options bar on the side of the screen and the "views" on top more clearly. Each view should have its own set of options to adjust that view.
3. Create Partner's Schedules so we can monitor each partner's schedule for each job they are assigned to. This will help us not over-schedule a certain partner.
4. Files should be called Documents, and these documents need to have folders instead of labels. Labels and folders could be useful together.
5. The photos tool needs to be updated with more functionality. For example, it could have preview windows instead of opening up a new tab. Inside the preview window, it could show all the data needed, and they could add arrows to scroll through the pictures without having to close and re-open the next one.
6. Questions and Messages should be combined into one Messages tool. There's no need to have both.
7. Messages should act more like emails with conversations for easier use.
8. Make the Gantt charts, calendars, and task list views printable. We don't always have our devices in front of us when we need to discuss the schedule, tasks, etc.
9. The To-Do list should be removed. Its functionality is already integrated into the scheduling tool.
10. Make every view uniform in its look and functionality, with the view buttons on the top and each view having its options bar on the right.
11. Adjust the Daily Report log to auto-save and add a feature where submitting the daily report to it locks it. This would make the report editable in case anything needs to be updated throughout the day; then, when it's submitted, it is locked in place.
12. Custom job notes would be nice.
13. More permissions and custom permission templates would help keep things secure and information safer.
14. Consolidate Contacts, Partners, and Clients into one master list and make all tools to adjust these contact types available from one list, not three.

Product Quality

A more professional look and feel, and better functionality would improve the quality in my opinion.

Customer Support

Customer support is very good. I very much appreciate the fact that Co-construct is always improving and open to any and all suggestions. That is what it is all about after all. They are making the product for their customers; why not listen to their suggestions? It makes me feel very comfortable knowing that we are on the same side when I have questions, problems, or issues; they can be resolved.

Likes Best

I like how Co-construct can help with scheduling and keeping a project more organized. The new scheduling tool is a big step in the right direction. It is fluid, user-friendly, and very functional. If all of Co-construct was patterned after the look and feel of the way the schedule is built, that would almost do it for me. There would, or course, be a few little things here and there I'm sure, but the majority of it would be there.

I it also nice how honest and open you guys are to constant improvement. This is the best way to be the best!

Likes Least

It is too much like a social networking program and not enough like a professional tool.

Recommendations

I would compare this program to all the other programs you are using and suggest ways for it to blend into your current workflow mindset. Technology is always changing and adapting to its surrounding (just like anything does), so it makes sense to keep with the program of the trends of this technological flow: simple buttons, options visible in places where they are familiar (placement), uniformity, similarity throughout the program to reduce the need to think about where something is, and organization of tools into categories that make sense to everyone. Google and Microsoft right now seem to be the leaders in this technological trend, so I would look to them for guidance.

Hi Colby,

Thanks for the input. It sounds like you’ve already shared your feedback with our support team, which is good. We’ve got all of your suggestions logged.

However, I did want to specifically respond to a few of your points, since they are items that we actually addressed in some recent updates or are functions designed to provide features that are helpful to users who may be choosing to use the system a little differently from you – which is fine, since no two custom builders operate the same way:

#1 – We have been adding some more full-screen options, such as with the new Gantt, Task, and Baseline views, which will grow as large as your browser window and screen make available.

#3 – The Activity Manager feature does allow the viewing of a particular partner’s schedule across one or more projects to see scheduling conflicts. You can also have a multi-partner, color-coded view for seeing scheduling conflicts without having to run a report for each partner.

#4 and #5 – The term “files” vs. “documents” is a bit of a matter of personal preference. However, within the last week, we’ve upgraded the photo upload tool to a cleaner interface and with better drag-and-drop features for getting multiple pictures into the system quickly.

#6 and #7 – Not all of our builders find a need for the separate questions and messages sections, but the questions feature does provide a great way to avoid the issue of a client asking a question, forgetting to respond to it, and then having the client lose faith in your ability to track open issues. With the clear indication of whether a question has been answered, it makes it easier for a builder to not overlook an outstanding item. If a client posts a question, and you decide that you want it elsewhere, you are able to click a link to move it to another spot in the project.

#9 – Some builders like to put everything into their schedules. However, having a separate schedule vs. to-do feature allows you manage your larger, planned activities on the schedule without cluttering it up with the small everyday (but still important) items that pop-up. You can quickly add those kinds of items to the to-do list from the website or mobile app. Our reports allow you to see, modify, and close out items from both sections in a single view. So, while it’s obviously your choice which sections you want to use, many of our users find it very helpful to keep the schedule and to-dos separate.

#12 – I agree. This is a popular request that I would like for us to address.

#14 – The Contacts page does provide a single place to access all of the people involved in your operation, whether they are clients, team members, prospects, or trades. We do have some other screens for managing the specifics if one of those contacts is, for example, a trade partner who needs access to just certain projects. But, you are able to get to all of your contacts from a single section, and then link to any other settings you may need from there.

Thanks for the input, and we look forward to continuing to enhance the system based on our users’ feedback!

Extremely Happy with this product

Ease-of-use

Functionality

It keeps us organized and makes us much more efficient.

Product Quality

I love it. It's very professional software that looks great to client. Also, I really love the App.

Customer Support

Top-notch! They are so fast to respond and follow up. Sometimes, I wish certain features would available quicker.

Likes Best

Our systems have never been better. I don't know how people do it with just emails. It would be chaos. It makes our business much more efficient and our lives that much easier. I love that we can have running threads for each line item!

Likes Least

I don't like that you can't view the budget from a mobile device. I would love it if you could incorporate partial payment completion options. For example, if we pay our framers half on Draw 2, we can't close out that line item on the budget until Draw 4, but there's no way to track those numbers in Co-construct until item is completely paid for.

Recommendations

A few months into implementation

Ease-of-use

The interface is intuitive, and similar to Facebook or other social networking programs, it's easy to pick up.

Functionality

It would be helpful if, in addition to Total Contract Cost and Payments Made, clients and builder could see the Remaining Balance at all times.

Product Quality

Co-Construct provides a one stop shop for custom building that has replaced numerous spreadsheets, constant emails, and so on. It seems that we took a professional step forward by introducing the interface to clients, and it has helped in selling our service as well.

Customer Support

Every time I've had a question, I have received a quick response. Less than an hour every time. Phone calls to support have been handled well too.

Likes Best

The offer immediate customer support and an intuitive interface that already has most of the functions we had established processes for over years of experience. Having our branding put on the app/site provides a more professional experience for the clients, and it helps greatly in organization of information, which can be chaos.

Likes Least

There are a few functions that I wish the software had. I have mentioned these to support and found that others have made similar suggestions, but that it would be a while before the changes were made. I wish such development could happen faster.

Recommendations

I recommend it (as long as it is to a non-competitor)! It truly makes a difference in client communication and project management. Typically, there is a way to do most things you probably already do.

Thanks for the 5-star review. Regarding your comment about too many emails -- I've got good news for you. Co-construct does give you the ability to get alerts for just certain projects or just certain types of events. So, for example, you could get an email each time there is a change order approval or a comment from a client, but not when a selection choice is made. I'll have our support team get in touch and show you where you can change your profile so you can hopefully get just what you need -- and nothing more.

Organization and tracking

Ease-of-use

It has been a little time consuming since it requires files to be saved in a special format before uploading, but after a while you get use to that quirk. Other than that, it is a breeze to use and navigate.

Functionality

Once the estimating portion has been implemented, it will completely meet our needs.

Product Quality

The ease of use for both the contractor and customer makes this product fun and easy to use.

Customer Support

They have answered any and all question we have had in a quick and timely manor.

Likes Best

We love the way this program allows us to organize the many different jobs we have going at one time and also the tracking features that allow us to make multiple changes to one project and still know which change we are on without spending forever trying to find out who or what prompted the change.

Likes Least

We are still waiting for the estimating portion of the program to be put in place. We were told by the end of the year when we purchased in July, this was the biggest reason that we chose Co-Construct over its competitors. Hopefully we will see this addition soon.

Recommendations

For anyone looking at software, the most important thing you need to consider is what you really need the software to do. Some programs are really neat and have special features that others don't, but if you don't need those features you should take that into consideration, as well as what you will need in the future.

There are a few spots in Co-construct where you need to have your file in a special format, such as when you want to import a budget or your accounting codes so our system maps the correct data elements from your csv file into our system. However, for other file attachments, such as photos or documents, you can use any format that you wish. In the case of photos, the system will even automatically convert the file types for you so they can be viewed by users without specialized software.
