I like that the product can allow/disallow users to access areas of the software to the point of it not even being visible. And beyond that limiting functions within functions. Great to keep information confidential.
All the custom settings need set up that way. And you have to know what you're doing, whether its by tutorials or customer support. Can't set new features up on your own easily.
I'm not sure who is a competitor of this, but we're very happy with what we have!

Software is easy to use and has capabilities to add items as needed to customize the information or reports. Easy access to support desk for help as well as online access for quit chat. All reports can be downloaded into Excel including everything on the info center.
This is not an accounting software so on the financial side, we download all the reports into Excel and reformat to our needs.
Great at tracking time and expense on the project side. Navigator is great tool for the project managers to see how their projects are progressing.

The product is designed for architects, engineers and project-based consultants and it does that very well. The best part to me is that it is a 360 degree solution from sales lead tracking to proposal creation to project accounting to overall company financial results and back again. It covers the entire project lifecycle and emphasizes how every piece of data from every stage of that cycle integrates and affects all the other stages.
The vendor is great at taking customer feedback and working that in to future releases of its products.
The only difficult thing we have come across is due to the fact that our company is very small and the software is generally built for mid-sized companies. It means that many of the modules can be overkill for us and the training needs a bit more than we expected to use all the features, bells and whistles.
Talk to your peers and competitors about what they use and the triumphs and pitfalls they have had. Make sure you dedicate enough resources to properly train all users and get buy-in from leadership and a few key "power users"

Deltek vision gives you great insight into your project health as well as corporate financials. The team from deltek was excellent during our migration in 2014 and they continue to provide excellent support when we have questions or need to tune the application settings.
I really don't have any negatives about the vendor, they have been excellent. My only complaint about the product is that from a reporting perspective it can be difficult to find a report that crosses infocenters. Certain combinations of sorting/grouping or columns are not available and that has made.
Make sure you understand the data in your existing project accounting system. It makes a world of difference in the ease of migration to a new product.

We are a 300 plus person firm in a multi-company, multi-office and multilingual / currency environment. We use both cash basis and accrual basis reporting features. We were an FMS user and had to choose either a new software package or migrate to Vision. We decided to go the migration route. One of the big factors leading to this decision was the fact that around 65% of the A&E firms were using Vision.
We had some great migration folks on the team, including Dave from Deltek. What set him apart was his thorough knowledge of the product and his SQL skill set. What, no billing terms came across in the migration? Dave was able to upload the data for us right here on-site.
Like any new complex software, it requires time to learn the nuances and we continue to do so. We have migrated to version 6.1 and are planning to bring our international office onto Vision in Q4. We continue to expand our SQL skill sets and are starting to explore the limitless potential of SQL report writing services. Couple this with the custom cube and the upcoming "super cubes" the ability to report on custom fields, and we are well-positioned to report the past, manage the current and forecast the future.
Without Vision it would have been very hard to set up our new companies. Multi-company is a wonderful thing! As our project volume has expanded, Vision has allowed us to easily distribute drafts across our 10 offices. Prior to Vision, this was a time-consuming, manual process.
I have to confess, I was originally hired as a consultant to PM the Vision conversion. This has led to a wonderful full-time position with a great firm and great people. What could be better!

Our company made the transition to Deltek Vision in September, 2006 from Wind2 FMS. We were in a growth mode and we needed to change our processes and our accounting\project management software to provide to manage our growing general engineering firm with 250 employees in 10 offices in Illinois and Wisconsin.
We looked for an integrated package to service all of our company’s needs: from vendor payments and 1099s to job costing and resource management. We wanted to be able to customize but also retain software support out-of-house. We wanted a system that would replace various Access databases and Excel spreadsheets and provide information for Accounting, Engineering and Marketing as well as Corporate Management. We wanted to have a single system but also the ability to control what data was revealed based on an employee’s responsibilities within the company. Vision met those needs.
We used the Vision Implementation to review our internal processes and make revisions. Some changes came from within our company but others were suggested by the first-rate Deltek Implementation consultant who worked with us throughout our implementation. Technical questions were answered quickly, honestly and completely by Deltek implementation support. We chose to move slowly but carefully through implementation and it paid off. We view our implementation as completely successful. Any implementation is tough but I would do it again if I had the same Deltek team and the only real change would be a larger budget for pizza at meetings.
Before implementing Vision, only the Accounting department had access to our software. From the day we went live, all employees have been given access to Vision and are expected to use it. With minimal training, our project managers went from requesting project setup on paper to creating projects in Vision themselves, with administrative staff performing oversight and review instead of duplication of information. Time and expense records are entered by the employee – instead of Accounting - and charges can be reviewed for accuracy before the time is posted. Project managers can view reports and draft invoices to see at any moment what could be sent to the client.
We’ve kept part of our implementation team together but now it’s our customization and integration team. Ideas for improvements come from internal staff. When new ideas push our skills to the limit, we have a wealth of resources available with Deltek Technical Support, the Tech Support Knowledge base, the User Forums and User Groups.
Using Vision’s User Defined Fields, Security Roles and settings, and Global Searches and Reports, we’ve achieved a unique Vision of and for our company.

GZA is a geo-technical and environmental consulting firm with 500+ employees and over 15 offices/locations throughout the U.S. We like to think we are proactive when it comes to our projects and business practices. This is one of the reasons we chose Deltek Vision as our software solution over 8 years ago. GZA has grown along with Vision and we are currently running Vision 6.1 SP3. Through the use of the system we have reduced the time it takes to produce accurate financial information and have given the project managers the data they need to manage their projects. GZA chose Vision because it was a Project Management/Financial Solution, it was for everyone. It gave us what we needed right out of the box.
GZA converted from a DOS-based system to Vision and it was a surprisingly easy transition for all the power users. The team we had converting our system was on top of the process and GZA was able to go live with Vision for time sheets within 5 days. Over the past 8 years we have trained the staff to utilize the many features Vision has to offer. Many of the skeptics in the early stages have come to realize that Vision is easy to use and can be very powerful.
Over the years the customer support has always been helpful and they follow-up to make sure the solution has met our needs. If the issue it too technical the case will get escalated to an expert, and Deltek will stick with you to resolve the problem.
GZA has not completely utilized all the features that Deltek Vision has to offer but we are working towards that goal. As we grow and learn Vision does as well.
