The EDGE™ estimating software offers integrated takeoff and estimating capabilities. This software is a fit for many subcontractors, including roofing, interior, fireproofing and more. The software can be completely customized to provide the best fit for each unique trade, and all databases are tailored to each client’s specific needs.

The takeoff capabilities in The EDGE enable users to view digital blueprints directly in the program, eliminating the need for a separate takeoff program. This provides greater flexibility and accuracy, and allows contractors to make changes on the fly. For those still using them, the software also supports the use of digitizers to automatically transfer measurements from a paper plan directly into the software.

The estimating piece of The EDGE comes pre-programmed with most of the formulas you’ll ever need to ensure you’re as efficient as possible. The reporting module that offers both default and custom reports (e.g., Consolidated Reports, Recap Reports, Labor Reports, etc.), so users can share important information.

The ease in which you can run numerous scenarios in a very short amount of time and flexibility in the different methods of estimating .

Cons

Since the buyout, you no longer are having a humans answering the phone. In my opinion, this takes away the Human Factor and now you are just a number in the queue.

At first I was apprehensive, because I have been doing manual takeoffs for over 30 years,but once I got comfortable with Edge, it now takes a quarter of the time to do takeoffs and you end up with drawings that can be used for submittals. That is a huge time saver.

We were struggling with a bottle neck at our estimating department. We could not meet the deadlines of all the public tenders coming through our system and we were contemplating hiring another estimator. We happened to meet one of the Sales reps from the EDGE at a trades conference and we were excited to learn about their software that could save us time and increase our production. After a trial run with the program it was quickly evident to us that with the efficiencies we could gain from using the EDGE we didn't need to hire another estimator. This has saved us time and money. It has also given us the ability to set check points that limit our liabilities. We are very happy with our purchase of the EDGE.

Pros

Saves time , Limits overhead of employees because it makes them more efficient and productive. Sets up check points of liabilities.

Cons

It takes some time to populate with information and adjust the settings. But this is a small inconvenience and is fairly standard practice with most programs.

Overall this is very good software for roofing, it's only okay for flooring. You can tell that their main client is roofing, however with a little additional time spent on flooring this program would be much better than any other flooring software out there.

My other complaint is if there is an error message within the project you're working on you can not make changes or view the recap screen (job cost total screen). It wouldn't be a problem if it was detailed as to where the error was. Unfortunately, it shows which condition it's in, but not what's wrong with the condition that needs fixed. Also, on occasion it will not show any errors but when you try and view the recap it will not let you saying there are errors.

With all of that being said it is a minor problem for this software. We have been using this software for almost 20yrs and will continue to use it. It has been a large part of the success of our company.

Initially I was not thrilled with the Edge. I changed companies and was use to the great front end, modern, user friendly interface of PlanSwift. The Edge seemed a bit dated and lacking many of the features I was use to, but once I got familiar with the program I realized it had a lot going on in the back end. It has some great features to modify your estimate and breakout pricing as needed for changing bid requirements. Like I said the program interface and features are dated and lacking, but that is supposedly all about to changes with an all new version of the program for Drywall Estimation. I have seen previews of the new version and I am very excited to start using it. The new release should make the program much more usable and a great estimating tool!

The Edge estimating software allowed the users to be able to pick a part every single condition in a job.
The way that is develop based on 3 primary conditions to use such as the area, length and count makes everything so simple to put together from the take off stage to the final material and labor budgets.
Very helpful tool and impressive capabilities and conditions to use. I'm very please with the amount of estimates and budgets we can put together in a very short period of time.

Pros

The software help us to estimate about 12 million dollars a month in roofing construction related projects.
We operate the entire company based on the cost budgets generated by the Edge software

Cons

No very many cons. The Edge software technical department always keep improving the software capabilities and fixing all new bugs.

The program is great but a bit clunky to use. Too many clicks involved to adjust conditions, add items, etc (Version 10.7)

I have been using the Edge for approx. 17 years, and have been tremendously impressed. It has eliminated a person in the office and help me keep up and track the jobs bidding. We have used the Edge for a number of years now. We are very happy with the ease of use, and getting an accurate estimate in a little time. What used to take us hours/days to complete, is now done in a couple of hours at most.
The Edge technical support is the best support we have ever used. When there was a hurricane in Florida, the office closed however, technical support worked remotely so as not to inconvenience their customers.

I would recommend The Edge to anyone considering a program to do estimates.

While the majority of the time I love the functionality and practicality of The EDGE, I've run into a few "glitches" as well as a few things I believe could be added/changed with the next version. Please see my thoughts below.

1. Look up Database (Misc., stud, board, anything) shows No items to display happens a few times a month. Have to restart Edge.
2. Option to lock in Board heights so that it does not change when changing stud heights.
3. 6 Mil poly Labour shows up under prices.
4. More Track options in soffits. Can have 8 stud types but only 2 tracks.
5. Option to automatically allow for curved/flex tracks at walls plus arch bead and ¼ board at soffitss and arch molding at ceilings when using ¿convert to arch
6. Allow same bead ( 3 counts) options for furred walls as there is for regular partitions.
7. There is a user code for special labour but not for special material.
8. Molding swap outs for acoustic ceilings to allow for C channel @ radiant heat panels and flex molding at curved walls
9. Would like an undo button for deleting conditions, pages etc.
10. Add a Notes page that can be added to the pages tab to put reminders, scope items, exclusions, etc.
11. Option to save Stocking and other Reports as pdf for e-mailing to suppliers.
12. Add condition for ceiling board swap outs
13. Multi condition selection tool does not always capture interior soffit, ocl. (May be more, only noticed with this one)

Again I would like to reiterate that day to day I love the EDGE, these are just a few things i've noticed over the past couple of years.

I like the software a lot very detailed and able to customize it to your preferences. Not very good at being able to move around on the takeoff screen. Customer support is so so. What ever you do do not finance through Marlin Finance there recommended finance company there are very dishonest and should not be trusted research bbb before you have any dealings with them.

Since the very first time I've used The Edge I knew I was using the most advanced estimating software in the market. The easy ways to navigate, set up templates and customize the program is what it makes it an outstanding program for estimators.
I like the idea of having a powerful tool to perform a detail roofing estimate. The up loading of digital plans became handy over the years and eliminates the use of a cumbersome digitizer tablet.
The customization of the database made my job much easier than ever. Now is just create a job bring my customized template and voila, a detailed estimate for a re-roof or new construction in a matter of minutes.
