On-Screen Takeoff and Quick Bid Software


 

The On Center Software portfolio includes On-Screen Takeoff and Quick Bid. It has been put to use by companies globally.

The On Center offering includes a takeoff and an estimating application that can be used by both commercial and residential contractors across various types of trade. The takeoff application supports on screen takeoff, digitizer integration, file integration (CAD, PDF, etc), and 2D takeoff. The estimating application includes electronic quote system, cost databases by trade, and accounting integration. The system is compatible with tablet technology that provides field access to project data for cost and labor management.

Companies best suited for this product will bring in revenue upwards of $1 million and be of any number of employees. There is no limit to the number of users that can be added to the system so companies will be able to grow using the software.

This software can find square footage of any architectural shape. Just needs to move-in.

I've used OST for 3 years, and it has always been able to meet my needs for takeoff. Without fail it creates a clear and easy to use takeoff file that i can import, edit, and organize. On top of that it enables clear communication of quantities and values between the estimating department and the field.

In my opinion, On-Screen Takeoff is the easiest to use digital take-off program out there. Even beginners can be up and running in only a matter of minutes for the simplest most common types of take-off. More difficult tasks (curved lines, items with odd shapes, etc.) can be picked up quickly as well. We use OST for presentations and as part of our proposals.

Cons

Price. Convincing higher-ups that the investment is worth the time-savings and that the time-savings equal cost savings.

I have been using OST for close to 10 years now and have found it to be a most useful software even beyond its amazing takeoff capabilities. Takeoffs are quick and easy and once coupled with the database of your creation or QuickBid, can provide exacting results that can be utilized in any size company or project.

Pros

Intuitive, easy to learn, numerous shortcuts for the experienced user, easy to create libraries of reusable building assemblies, Customer Service has always been spectacular when needed.

Cons

Updates can be precarious (but there is Customer Service), doesn't link to a database like RSMeans (last I checked).

I have used both Quick bid and Ost for about 4 years now and the company i work for has used it a bit longer. The person who trained me was a very early user of the product. Compared to a scale and a spread sheet this product is awesome. However as we started growing as a company and getting more users product became glitchy. at that time we where told to move to a sql database (They do not support SQL but do recommend it as a solution to issues.) Since this time the support that we pay quite well for yearly is about useless as they go thru the motions like they want to help then say we do not support sql so we can not help you. At one point i had issues approving a change order that i made called support they mentioned yes that is an issue here is a workaround because that feature only works about half the time.(Really!) Basically it seems that whenever we have an issue their "Excellent" support team has issues telling us anything other than it is somehow our fault, yet every time they recommend us to do something a specific way we oblige. In short this product could be amazing however they need to get with the times and start supporting what they recommend.

Pros

Takeoff program works very well, lots of different options to show differences in conditions. Quick bid works well sometimes. and you can customize the naming conventions, link items, and do multi condition takeoff. As i mentioned if it wasn't for the poor support and the horrible recommendation to switch to sql that they do not support i would probably be writing a completely different review.

Cons

Customer service they will answer phone and call you back. I think it's so they can tell you that they cant help or support you.

Advice to Others

If you do have issues call support at night as late as possible they may spend some extra time due to boredom at off peak time.

I have tried other Takeoff software, but this is the best for me. I like this product because it is user friendly and has several built in tools that others may not have. In addition, other software can be limited in functions or available tools. I also like that the
customer service representatives are friendly and helpful.

The export function to excel gets stuck at times other than that its good. I would like an option to measure segments on a page to accurately scale a page. As it is, a scale has to be either selected or created which could be a hassle when the page does not have a scale in which case you just have to guess until you get the right measurement you're looking for.

It is a very intuitive program, the way it operates makes taking off construction material for my job simple.

Likes Least

Some aspects are not so intuitive. Some of the actions and tools on the program don't operate how most other programs do. I'm referring to tools like text box and dimension where there is no easy way to change text color/style for all text, only indivisually.

Recommendations

Really the software is great. The only problems we have had was with our database and server. My advice then would be to get a good IT guy.

It appears that not all companies can be searched for the chicagoland area and also companies you know are in the software sometimes do not appear when searched.

Ease to use. Allow for quick quantity, linear footage, or square footage takeoffs.

No additional rules that can be applied for total estimate (labor and material rates). Also, cannot pull up takeoffs performed by another user.

Recommendations

For quick validation of subcontractor scope, this product is great. For any self-perform, there will be a lot of additional work performed in Excel or another system to develop a proper estimate.

Ease of use. Other programs were so simple however that there were not a ton of options and features. This product can work simply but also has tons of short cuts and additional options if you are also looking for bells and whistles to learn along the way. The good thing is you can be up and running in no time with the basics of it and learn more as you go. Videos and training and support response time are all great.

The two day course was great but it would be nice to have one on one help with the training to skip the things I already knew and get into spending more time on the things I needed to. The training was not specifically for concrete which would have been more helpful than learning things that don't pertain to my field.

I like the ease of use and how it works with multiple users. It is the Cadillac of on screen takeoff software.

I used it as an employee of a large construction company. Now that I am on my own I struggle with how much they charge versus other software that can do just as much.

Recommendations

It did have its limitations but the program is smooth and intuitive. I would recommend this to someone that is used to it already and does not worry about the cost.

The product provides a legend for multiple quantity take-offs which allows the user to estimate the job fully. This is also great during construction to provide adequate materials onsite.

Likes Least

There is nothing that I do not like about this product as the features provide you exactly what you need during the estimating phase. Color coding can mimic other materials but it's understandable that you can only provide so many configurations.

Recommendations
