The SharpeSoft Estimator was created by a civil estimator back in 1986. Based upon first-hand knowledge of the civil construction industry, the SharpeSoft Estimator offers cost estimating software on a best-of-breed basis and includes functionality such as detailed labor and equipment costs, highly customizable work breakdowns, vendor bid comparisons, bid closeout management, and a proposal generator.
Some of the more advanced features offered in their estimating software allow users to select from multiple labor rates (such as union/prevailing wage vs. open-shop), select from multiple equipment rates (such as owned vs. rented), automate the request-for-quote (RFQ) process, manage vendor bid pricing, calculate and load utility trench material quantities, and prorate costs to bid items.
SharpeSoft also offers functionality for project management, but this application must be purchased as part of an integrated suite. Their project management software provides standard features such as job costing, payroll time sheets, time and materials (T&M) tracking, equipment and resource management, and progress tracking.
We recommend this product primarily for its capabilities in estimating. However, SharpeSoft is a solid solution for companies that also need project management, but are focusing primarily on an estimating solution. We find that the product performs best in utility, earthwork & excavating, paving, heavy construction, and related industries.

SharpeSoft facilitates accurate estimating and planning. Analysing changes and alternatives is quick and accurate. Easy to archive estimates for quick crew and cost retrieval. Good summary functions.
We would like to see more export to Excel spreadsheets. Especially Item and Sub-Item summaries, and materials, subcontracts, and Other resources similar to the Labor and Equipment export.
We would also like to have easy merge of estimate items developed on separate stand-alone computers.
Take the classes and tutorials. The program has a lot of strong features once the user understands them.

The comprehensive material database. We are a pipeline contractor that has to deal with all types of different material. With a little forethought you can create an in depth and detailed material data base to pull from when estimating.
The scope of work report and formatting is not the easiest to use.
Once your database is setup and you have a few jobs put together within the system, bidding becomes simple and productive through the use of the "copy job" feature. Estimates are virtually already completed. All you need to do is update your new estimate with the new job's unique details and characteristics and the rest is already done for you.

Once the program is set up its very easy to build a very small one day job as it is to build a 1 Million Dollar + project. The ease of building your specific crews and material lists and always having them at the ease of one click is extremely productive. I have trained several people on this system and they are usually up and running with in two to three days. As we know this is essential in the construction business.
As a small business owner I would not be honest if I didn't at least say the cost of the product is a substantial investment, and the yearly fee's need to be a budget item in over head.
Really look into the products and test how they interact with other software. It can be such a huge task to a estimating department and the billing department if the programs don't mesh together perfectly. The time and heartache that I have witnessed trying programs that I was promised worked together has lost my company and other's, employee time and lost revenue.
Myles from Franklin Construction, Inc.
The product has a great ability to export to excel for bid/project analysis. As a vendor they are always available when technical assistance is needed and they have a quick turnaround for repairs.
I wish the product would breakdown man hours more effectively and give you more options when exporting data. Another issue I have ran into is when I copy a job all of the data that I have changed within a bid item detail reverts to its default price. No complaints with vendor.
Make sure you understand the various levels of detail you can go into when putting a bid together. Also look at the subcontractor analysis and trench information.

The ability to build crews and assemblies for recurring items of work.
Annual maintenance fees are too high. Item code field should be longer.
Ease of use and training required are bigger cost factors than the software cost.
Nicole from Western Engineering Contractors
It's a really easy program to use and to teach people how to use .
There's no program for diary/timecard tracking against estimated/budgeted costs. The material comparison is super confusing.
Create tracking software compatible for field use.
Jon from VT Electric, Inc.
The estimating program is designed so changes (e.g.-"what if?" scenarios) to the estimate can be made very quickly on the fly. The program is based on assemblies, so preparing estimates is much faster/easier. Preparing project management schedules is much faster due to the program having the capability to export the estimate to your project management software.
SharpeSoft has been very receptive to customer software requests/inputs, as well as providing excellent customer support (24 hours a day)
Material codes are a little too short, as I would like to describe the materials with longer material code part numbers.
Make a list of your must have estimating software needs and view/review other estimating software to see what is out there.
Keith from Western Engineering Contractors
They listen to their customers and add the features that we request.
Some things do not work like other Windows programs. For instance, there is no cut and paste.
You need to bid a job with it. Make sure you play with the rounding sheet and look at the prorate and indirects screen. Review the summary table and the help menu.

The developers of the software understand our business and have consistently responded swiftly with meaningful updates.
We have no dislikes of the product, and the vendor is great.
If you are evaluating this software against others, be sure to understand the ease of use of SharpeSoft. I have seen people of all technical levels learn to use this software with relative ease. If you know how to bid work, the software is not a problem. Our company had used three other estimating software packages prior to using SharpeSoft, at which point, we never looked back.

The software is excellent, and the personalized customer service has been phenomenal. From training to maintenance, regular updates, and after hours support calls, we are always confident someone is there to assist us with our needs.
We have yet to come upon a feature or service that we feel the need to complain about.
The personal and live demo that SharpeSoft offered was very helpful for us. Their training was and continues to be top-notch.
Wally from Pivetta Brothers Construction, Inc.
SharpeSoft is easy to learn and very adaptable for different disciplines. It's easy to update labor and equipment rates and is functionally efficient. SharpeSoft has excellent customer support and continually provides updates based on customer feedback. They are very responsive to customer input.
I would like to see the database be a little more user-friendly.
If you're not using a product currently and are looking for something that is cost-effective and very functional, SharpeSoft is the way to go.
