STACK Estimating Software


 

STACK Estimating from STACK Construction Technologies is a cloud-based on-screen takeoff and estimating tool for professional contractors of all business sizes in most trades.

With STACK Estimating, users are able to produce bids with user-defined pricing, allowing them to calculate costs more accurately. Users are able to execute their own takeoffs within the program, or they can request the STACK team to do the work for them with a single click via the STACK To-Go tool.

The reporting module organizes data by location, division, or trade while a coverage rate calculator helps determine the quantity and type of materials required for a project.

STACK Estimating also provides pre-built catalogs for some trades that include in-depth lists of equipment, labor, and materials users need based on customizable historical experience.

STACK Estimating is accessible on Macs, PCs, and mobile devices so users can bid for work from anywhere.

I probably would have liked it better with better training so I was comfortable with it.

Pros

The interface seems (on paper) easy to use once you get to grasp the options. I love the cloudbased option because my company has issues with servers losing connections onsite.

Cons

The learning curve seems very steep. Drawings took a long time to load, switching between drawings also takes a long time. The reporting needs to be enhanced or modified to allow more updating by the user.

The system is well organized and easy to work with. The calendar, the take-off lists, and the reporting functions are better than any other system that I have used. I rated features and functionality at 3 stars because I am having difficulty getting a linear take-off done. My cursor is not following the path that I try to take the drawing.

Making Takeoffs Easy

I have been using this product for over a year. It saves so much time and allows you to go back to previous jobs to review takeoffs.

Pros

Can upload all prints and related documents and can access them from anywhere.

Cons

The fact that after two accounts it jumps to ten to open any more accounts. We are a small company and it would not make sense to have 12 accounts as there is only 3 of us that do takeoffs.

A company that will not stand behind their product.

The product is not suited for the Masonry business and the so called experts can not make it work properly. I was on the phone several times with these experts and they had to get off and go and consult with other members to try and resolve issues. They leave you for days while trying to figure out your problems before they return calls. I was told on one occasion that it would be three days before they could get back with me, all the while I had a bid due the next day. I simply ask to have my money refunded since I had the software less than 30 days, and it took them 3 weeks to send me an email denying my refund. As many of you understand that own businesses, the honorable thing to do would be to make the customer happy, not steal their money and just claim the software works fine.

Cons

The catalog they push so highly is not suited for the real world. The software that they claim they have experts to support you with do not know how to resolve the problems. The support center plays the game of deny and delay, hoping you will figure it out on your own, or just stop calling. I was offered a 30 day trail which they now are not honoring and refusing to refund my money.

Advice to Others

Do not purchase very shady company that will not honor their promises of a trial and support. They just want your money.

While our team is certainly no stranger to the sense of urgency that often exists with project bidding, we cannot commit that our training resources and schedule will always match with the exact need or timing of our users. Mr. Williams requested training late in the day on a Friday and was scheduled for the following Monday, but grew frustrated due to the 3-day wait. Unfortunately for STACK and for JT Williams Masonry, we were not given the opportunity to help their team learn to use our software. We make every effort to accommodate the customer and this case was no different. Silverlight worked well for cabinet takeoffs. The new system does not work. Having to create a takeoff each time is very time consuming. We are looking at other programs at this time. I left messages to discuss our issues without results. Loading was very timely. We are looking ate bluebeam. I would have like to stay.

Again the Silverlight was good.

Cons

Takeoffs set up, loading, Switching rooms all bad.

We have really enjoyed stack. It has really streamlined out commercial estimating, and is also really useful for residential new builds.

Pros

Ease of use. Different available reports. Accuracy in takeoffs

Cons

Upload is very slow. Sometimes the program crashes and needs to be closed down. Automatic saving seems to prevent most data loss though, so that is a saving grace.

This soft ware has made my life as an estimator very productive. we went from bidding 2 jobs a week to 10 jobs in 2 days a week. This product will really enhance your ability to bid jobs, it is so easy to use.

Pros

Ease of takeoffs and pricing. I can bid 10 jobs in 2 days.

Cons

Sometimes it takes a little longer to up load plans but is still very worth the small time to wait.

I actually started using Stack when it was called Cloud Takeoff. They have made some really great upgrades recently and the price stayed the same which is unheard of. If you are ever in need of Customer Support they are there. Customer Support is back East however they will answer regardless of time on their end....My rep has answered from home at his dinner table!

Pros

If job is awarded you have all counts already.....Stored in Cloud so you can save as many projects as you want.

Cons

Its slow uploading plans depending on size and is slow and stutters on occasion

It was very easy to write formulas and create new wall types. The jobs that I used Stack for the take offs were so accurate that we only had 1 stud and a couple pieces of track left over. Very easy program to learn.

Pros

Easy to write formulas and it gives very precise data.

Cons

I would like it if I could write a formula that would account for variable heights and different levels of finish.

Would be nice if you didn't have to re do your wall types after re-organizing your own folders.

Advice to Others

If you create your own formulas and folders organize them well before creating wall types.

Honestly a learning experience is the best I grt now,

Just Inputting and using program to enter ships and drawings of ships in for each class of ship we are working on. once more jobs are entered would like to end up witha square foot to S data base so in futur we can ask how many sqare foot pf bilge in the AMR on a WMSL Class ship and wbhat did we charge as an average for painting by square foot. Now have Started to measure 2s square footage but have not seen or understand hoe to correlate that to job.
Much less how to enter it and pull it out to make a bid I supose that will come in time. First we are verifying what we have and then there will be more data base building from old and new bids as we go , including machinery and equipment needs to use and the material required. The we should be able ask " the customer want us to paint the forward bulkead in the bosn locke dark ble using xxx paint prepared to SSPC SP10 what will the cost be for bid... hpw much profit can we make and also what is the average marie rate for that.

I like the value for the product. I like that it is cloud based so I can work from anywhere. I like that they have flexible payment options for new or small businesses. I like that they are constantly looking for way to improve the product to keep up with changing technology. I LOVE STACK!

I have had very few problems to occur, and most often the online help has accessed the issue and contacted me to verify the problem and it was corrected in minutes.

Pros

Very easy to use and teach to coworkers. I enjoy the fact it's cloud based, so when I need to take work home I can access it wherever I have internet.

Cons

Cost - you would have received 5 stars before this year and the cost increase. There are other features that aren't available in Stack that are available in takeoff programs such as E-takeoff through Sage.

Cons

Can't undo previous command, Can't edit the name of a selected item, so if you add to the wrong item it must be deleted and redone on the correct one.

Cons

The time that it takes to setup all the elements to works properly is really a bummer. Not that it would be easier with any other software, but I would've like to have the possibility to download the most commonly partition assemblies as an example.

As I said previously the time we save in doing estimates for new home packages has drastically cut our tie more than half.
The ease of downloading and measuring home packages is super.

The program saves valuable time for doing house packages. The ease of downloading plans and the measuring tool is great.

Cons

The Items and assemblies are hard to set up. The cost for the catalogs is a little pricey, when pushing the items/assemblies over to Excel it does not bring enough info over.

Ability to create comprehensive estimates, simplifying/reducing the number of calculations, the calendar and monitor projects from the application are all extremely beneficial features of the application.

Pros

Makes it easy to adjust and modify estimates. Calculations of labor and material was simplified and in many cases combined. Integrates with other data software. Ability to create reports from software and import into pdf , excel of comma delineate format. Ability to modify data in items and assemblies.

Cons

Take-offs should allow for multiple selections once it's created without having to create a separate take-off for minor changes in data.

Very easy to use to take off any size project. I like that you are always upgrading with new features.

Cons

Speed when moving between projects would be nice if it was faster. occasionally we have trouble sending our drawing to pdf for print outs.

Makes me much more efficient at my job.

Pros

It's easy to stay organized and sort takeoffs to fit my needs. It's very easy to learn and to use. I really like the calendar on the beginning screen that sorts projects. I also like the geometry takeoff summary report that makes it very easy to see the measurement of each takeoff and to locate where each takeoff is at.

Cons

It glitches from time to time. And it usually takes multiple tries to upload plans 20 MB or more. Large projects are nearly impossible to upload unless each sheet is it's own file.

Quicker take off's leaves more time for other projects

Pros

I think once i learn all the different aspects of the program it will be very helpful in winning many more projects

Cons

It seems to have a large learning curve, i wish there were videos on how to start your first take off without knowing anything about the program, something like a 24 step program

I really have only just begun to scratch the surface. I need to get some more training so that I can harness the softwares features. It would be great to have a user's manual or to have online demos. The customer support is great, but sometimes it would be nice just to reference the manual. I have already forgotten how to do a few things that i learned with the help of customer support.

Pros

Uploading plans is very simple and intuitive. I think that the reporting is great. I like the fact that takeoffs are available for future projects, and that values may be assigned.

Cons

I have trouble with the zoom function. I try to zoom in and out like you would on google maps or google earth.

The best thing about this software is the ability to add items and assemblies to the takeoffs. I use Stack for landscaping estimates. When I have an irrigation system to install, I can add in the cost of each valve component and the labor involved as one assembly, and then do a take off counting valves. When I look at the item list in reports, which translates to a shopping list really well, it tells me the total cost for each item and assembly.

Cons

I would really like the ability to create a quick circle in the takeoffs. Also the annual cost is pretty steep. To add a user is the same cost, which seems absurd to me. We share and have to coordinate so as not to get bumped out while working.

Saved me time which saved me money.

Pros

I don't have a drawing/ drafting background. This was my first taste of material take off from a construction drawing. I like how easy it is to use and how I can collaborate online with the rest of my team who are in different cities.

Cons

I'm sure there is a good reason behind this but when you get an estimating software and see this at the bottom of a report, it just doesn't sit well with me "STACK Construction Technologies is not responsible for ensuring the accuracy and completeness of this report. Results are not guaranteed."

I am able to quickly perform takeoffs without having to get a set of plans printed.

Pros

The Calendar is a great function It would be even more useful if their were a way to sync it with our outlook calendar.

Cons

Sometimes projects that have a lot of pages of plans take way too long to load. Even when we are on our T5 line at the office
