BambooHR is a cloud-based human resources (HR) software service for small and midsize businesses. BambooHR offers small and growing companies a human resource information system (HRIS) that includes an applicant tracking system (ATS) and HRIS tools to manage all aspects of the employee lifecycle.

BambooHR provides HR process automation tools that are accessible in several languages and multiple currencies. The platform allows HR professionals and managers to track organizational data such as employee turnover and retention.

BambooHR also provides customization services, multiple administrator seats, user support and the ability to maintain inactive employees. Administrators can provide access to all employees or limit access to only those in the company that need it.

Pricing is subscription-based depending on the number of employees plus a one-time implementation fee.

The after-sales service matters as much as the product itself.

Pros

It's pretty easy to use. Overall, the feedback from our team has been positive. I would love to be able to download a spreadsheet of all the applicants for a job posting as a starting point for screening candidates.

Cons

The after sales-service with billing has been frustrating! For awhile we had to correspond with a different person each time regarding the same issue. It's surprising that we have to explain to the accounting department of a global company how to properly apply a pre-payment against monthly invoices. They have been known to suspend our account over $200 balance less than 30 days overdue!

Pros

BambooHR is the best value you can get for a small company HRIS/Payroll/ATS. Everything integrates together. Customer service is fantastic. Development team is open to suggestions and always making improvements.

Cons

I like the user friendly interface and being able to quickly gather information for or about my employees. It has reduced the amount of calls I receive in regards to what benefits they have or to update their personal information such as address or phone number changes. I also like how quick I can locate a number to contact staff if I need to get in touch with them.

Cons

I wish it had more of a Facebook communication layout versus announcements. Announcements are good but I feel we could as a whole company say something simple as Happy Birthday to an individual or be able to give virtual medals for a job well done. I also wish it was easier to determine what access certain people had within the company. It would be nice to share a file within the announcement versus directing them to the Files tab.

Good software for networking within an institution

The most positive feature is that the software allows the users to see who is on-duty and who is off. All employees can see each other's schedule so that they can make a schedule for working together as needed in case of some projects. Another positive feature is the ways the software organizes things like documents and org chart.

Cons

The software is overall good, neat, and easy to use. One thing that may improve the software would be to provide some features that connect people's task more such as chatting, social news feed, etc

Know that the price is negotiable, make sure to flex your negotiation skills. Customer service was also a job to work with.

Pros

BambooHR biggest strength was it's easy of use. I liked their tracking of historical data, user friendly interface and ability to also allow employees to access the information and update it on their own- which reduces the work on my end and is always appreciated.

Cons

The cost was out of our price range, although the value was there it wasn't feasible for our budget.

Great company to work with from sales to service.

Pros

This product is easy to use and is specifically geared to the small business environment, but can be used for a larger business. I use it for my own small company of 10, but I also implemented for a company of 95 employees. The implementation team is highly responsive and each time we have used them for a new company they have been responsive and quick to address concerns. The implementation timeline is very quick. Employees love this as there is an app as part of the program.

Cons

It does not have the ACA reporting and filing capabilities. You can pull reports but it doesn't file and it does not integrate with benefits providers. Employees can enroll in benefits online, but that still has to be uploaded to the carriers. Being that this is for a small business that may not be necessary and only an issue for over 50 employees.

Cons

The reason we did not go with BambooHR was because of the cost tied to it. I wouldn't say that it is expensive, however, we were not looking for a complete HR system. We were only looking for an ATS at the time.

Handling our internal staff and sending on-boarding packages is nice, and it offers a good way to make things related to our staff visible to the HR department.

It handles time off policies really well and you can set a lot of internal specifications for the benefits your staff gets.

Customer support replies fast mostly on the same day.

It has a good user access differentiation, but if you're like me and would like a lot of customization on that side for the hiring front you'll find it a bit lacking.

Cons

It could have a lot more functionality in terms of employee self service and functionality, it gets little or no use from our staff on weekly basis with the exception of asking for time off, I would think that a more interactive platform for employees that allows for internal marketing and coordinating internal events.

The hiring functionality is new and it lacks a lot of organization thus it makes it very time consuming for the hiring staff, it's hard to process information and it doesn't generate any kind of report regarding recruiting so you'll have to do that manually, and since it also doesn't allow you to download your candidate database you'll have to manually count how many people went through each stage and generating statistics will take you forever. Thus if you need hiring functionality I'd recommend using another tool and doing your research taking your own internal process into account.

Also the API doesn't touch the recruiting platform at all and tech support won't be able to help with that because the recruiting platform works separately from other areas of the application.

Software is great for onboarding & employee information. The ability for employees to request time off is a benefit. The performance review is also beneficial along with the training setting is also very useful.

Cons

There are a lot of limitations as far as the Time Off capabilities. They don't allow for a blackout time where people cannot request time off which is something that certain industries need. They also don't allow for your company email or information to be loaded on to different job boards. When a potential employee clicks on the job posting it doesn't provide any of the company information. It only allows for certain types of deductions in the Benefits are but each company should be allowed to build its own benefit structure.

For a small company, this has been a great decision and will help us scale our business and communicate effectively with our growing team.

Pros

It's fairly simple to set-up, is intuitive for the most part, and is very cost effective. There aren't hidden costs or contracts (month to month service). The e-signature documents are wonderful.

Cons

The customer service team is very responsive, but my initial communications have been a bit confusing. You don't really have one main contact, but several "heroes". I have many emails and responses that I feel could be streamlined. In order to find the answers to some of my questions I"m having to thumb through many emails and many online resources.

Task lists and e-signed documents make it easy to keep track of what has been completed by who and what still needs to be done. Super robust reporting function for numbers nerds.

Cons

For some reason it doesn't automatically enroll full time employees into things like your PTO or benefits. Requires a high level of compliance by employees , otherwise things just don't happen. Only allows for 10 job postings before you have to upgrade, which means if you have several "always open" positions this is a problem.

Streamline almost every process...made tracking applicants easy, onboarding is very positive and we were able to stop using so many spreadsheets to track employee info. It has also increased our ability to communicate and track info.

Pros

Bamboo has ATS, onboarding, HRIS, documents, announcements, reports and performance - all at a very reasonable cost and in an easy to use format. Our staff has loved the communication it provides and the ability to have information at their fingertips. It is a great solution!

Cons

The only thing I wish it had was multi level tables...we have to track roles for compliance (with their permissions)- not other HR software did this either so it was not a loss...

We chose Bamboo because there seemed to be a lot of functionality in the system. Really liked the option to add photos to employee profiles and the onboarding/offboarding aspects.

Cons

Buyer beware. They will put pressure on you to sign the contract to lock into a rate without providing full disclosure on system capability or integration. They have not been responsive to our needs during the implementation process.

I will update this review after further experience.

Huge amount of pressure and stress taken off our managers and single HR/Payroll person. It's keeping us more organized and all employee records in one location.

I could probably write a whole book about why I think organizations should be using BambooHR. I am currently a one-woman show at my company and was running most of our processes on dropbox and drive documents. BambooHR has freed up so much of my time, allowing me to be more strategic and take better care of my team. Bamboo makes our company even more organized and improves the hiring to on-boarding experience by 1000%.

Let's start with the Applicant Tracking Software. I went from having no ATS and using google docs to Bamboo and it has made my life so much easier and our lines of communication to applicants even better. It allows me to stick to deadlines, keep everything in one place, and never misplace an applicant. I don't know how I would have gotten through hiring for our summer internship program (180 applicants) with out this software.

On-boarding: incredible. I can send a new hire packet to my new hire and they feel so well communicated with every step of the way. Being able to fill out their paperwork online is so important - they can do most of it before they even step into our office. Then they have access to everything later - what more could they (or I) want?

Reporting time off - We have unlimited vacation but still use Bamboo to keep track of where people are and how many days are spent out of the office. It's so incredibly easy to set up and my freedom loving team loves using it. (There is even an app!)

The day to day - it makes everything easier. I have everyone's phone numbers, addresses, SSNs, EVERYTHING in one place.

I'm an evangelist for a reason, it's hands down the best thing I've implemented for my team.

Pros

So simple, effective, customizable. Customer service is amaaaazing. You can do everything you would possibly want and now they have payroll.

Cons

I literally don't not like a thing about Bamboo.

Advice to Others

Just go for it. It's a very cost effective way to make your life easier. If your manager is on the fence about purchasing, they can call me and I will talk their ear off about it and you'll be able to do your job even better once you have it in place.

I love using BambooHR! It holds and organizes all of our HR paperwork automatically! We have been using BambooHR for a few years now and I really love all of the changes that they have made in the last year or so! It has made it easier to use and give me more functionality I love it!!

Pros

How easy it is to use and all of the extra functions that they are coming out with.

Cons

The customer service is a little lacking when I have to call and ask questions. Their staff is not as knowledgeable as I would like or expect. I do always get my questions or problems worked out but it can be a little time consuming.

I have used other HRIS systems with prior companies; however, Bamboo HR is by far my favorite. The current company has less than 60 employees and did not have a HRIS. Since implementing Bamboo HR, the report feature, automated emails for trainings, directory, and employee profiles has made my job more efficient. I absolutely love the app - and so do my managers.

As an employee it's an easy framework to use but as an admin it's pretty tricky. It's quite a complex backend system.
I joined for the integrated aspect of performance reviews which I was led to believe could be tailored and it doesn't appear that they can

Cons

Being based in the UK and only being able to gain customer support during US West coast working hours is frustrating. If an error occurs in the morning I have to wait the whole day before I can attempt to get it rectified.

Advice to Others

For those outside of the USA consider it thoroughly before making the step. If you rely on support it's probably not the best option for you.

I have evaluated many tools. In the end bambooHR offered me everything I was looking for:
- all in one tool
- good design
- user friendly
- good support although a different continent

Pros

It is a tool that has all in one and there is no need for other tools. Also it is very easy to use and has a great design.

Cons

Time-off has potential for improvement.

I'm a brand new HR employee and I needed structure that was a) affordable b) functional c) easy to implement and d) something I could train our leadership on that was very user friendly. BambooHR saved my bacon! I am so thankful that the process took less than a month from soup to nuts and it's just been an amazing experience all around. If you're anywhere close to the same boat I'm in, just go for it! You will not regret it and you'll be glad you did! I've loved the system and very much an overnight fan.

Pros

Ease of use. Friendliness and professionalism of BambooHR employees. High functionality and high value add for a very tight budget.

Cons

A few limitations, but honestly, everything in the system planning from Bamboo's side has been well thought out and I couldn't find a lot of complaints even if I tried.

This product makes an HR expert's life a dream for having all employee information online and in one place. Onboarding and offboarding process are customizable and very user friendly. The reporting feature with over 30 standard reports helps HR have data at their fingertips. The simple touches of including employee pictures and celebrating milestones and birthdays are important and now easy.

And the people at BambooHR are truly amazing from sales to implementation to ongoing support, no question is ever a bother and you get answers promptly so you can provide them to your management and team.

Our company is very happy to have BambooHR as our HRIS...make it yours too.

Pros

It is super easy to implement and there are so many features that help make doing HR simple.

Cons

You cannot assign emails by name, only by job title. Some employees have manager titles without managing staff so it can be difficult to send information and ensure it gets sent to only those who need it.
