Overall Workday is a great HRIS system, but majority for larger organizations. It assists housing a large employee base.

Pros

Clean, organized platform. User friendly as well for daily users and back-end users. Icons to navigate site are helpful as well.

Cons

A little difficult to find where things are sometimes, but once you learn the system, it's fairly straight forward.

Difficult to learn without paying for courses but still a solid option

Ease-of-use

N/A

I have only been using Workday for a few months. After taking all of the integration courses and starting to build integrations I am reasonably comfortable with the back end but no front end knowledge which is required to test at least the inbound integrations. Be prepared to spend days researching certain topics before coming up with answers. I recommend hiring a consultant to help in house developers learn the tools and functionality if you decide to go with Workday.

Pros

-Basic functionality for end users is intuitive and easy to use.
-Lots of options for integration with third parties
-Easy to use, custom, report capability with the option to expose reports as services (RaaS).
-Fairly easy to learn and use add-in for Eclipse for complicated integrations (Workday Studio).

Cons

-Training is expensive and is basically required to do an implementation due to lack of available reference material. Recording the online training for future reference is not permitted
-The workday community site is cumbersome (searches are not ranked according to relevancy and it can take many hours to find what you are looking for). Some workday studio components don't seem to be documented at all on the site.
-Certain functionality and community information is only provided to "Workday Implementation partners" which makes it nearly impossible to implement in-house without paying to outsource some of the work to a workday partner.
-Workday doesn't seem to have been built with performance in mind. Even with server side paging, reports and integrations are very slow.
-Lots of "hidden features." This would normally be a bonus but more advanced tasks require the user to know exactly what to search for from the application's search feature. Most of the functionality of workday is hidden in search results and isn't intuitively exposed in the UI.

Pros

The dashboard is very intuitive and easy to use. The major buttons: Pay, Time Off, Benefits, etc are well thought out and the interface is clean and beautiful.

Cons

There is not a lot of information on the benefits page, however, this might be something with my company rather than Workday.

Inadequate training, lack of internal SME resources, and an absence of a true guided vision/direction by leadership will result in an expensive and poorly received system. As such, an organization will be reliant on implementation partners or independents as consultants, supporting or re-implementing a failed system, which will be even more expensive.

Pros

Workday is leading edge technology and highly configurable. The UI is best in class. Integrations with most 3rd party systems are easy to configure and the delivered packaged integrations are superb.

Cons

An organization needs to ensure proper internal support for the system to function smoothly. Training and user adoption/communication is also key for acceptance. An organization must have the SME talent in-house to be successful.

Navigation as an employee - good. Easy to understand the basics (pay, taxes, etc.). Benefits enrollment challenging. Navigation from HR - reports/data can be challenging to pull what you are exactly looking for. Organizational chart is difficult for large organizational. Ease of use from management perspective can be challenging (i.e. opening/closing position).

Workday has been easy to learn, and easy to communicate or teach managers how it works. There are a few improvements that I would like to see happen, but it may be just because we as a company haven't customized it to match expectations yet.

Pros

Documentation of steps, up next tasks, approvals pending easily viewable and easy to find.

Cons

Identification of requisitions ID and integration with our ATS Jobvite. Not so easy to find and match to ATS.

Advice to Others

Great product to learn, easy to understand, but make sure the right teams in place to customize it for each HR team involved.

Pros

Specifically, we have replaced our paper based performance and goals review process with Workday's automated solution. We have also replaced our manual time and absence tracking processes with Workday's Time Tracking and Absence Management modules. The payroll software of Workday is very basic like most payroll systems, but the HRIS certainly is more robust than most systems out there.

Pros

Workday is visually appealing to the eye. Enjoyed working with Workday. Workday is intuitive and guides you through the process. We are able to to fix problems quickly. Workday is a user-friendly, intuitive user interface. This is one of the best user interfaces for HCM platforms.

Workday is a pre-packaged, template-based. Integrations are very efficient to implement with certain vendors, compared to traditional customized integrations that are built over and over for the same vendor.

A custom eclipsed-based tool that allows drag-and-drop components to build custom solutions for certain systems. Flexible, adaptable, and scalable.

Cons

Workday Payroll is not very mature yet. The functionality of several modules are still pretty basic/rudimentary as compared to other best in class HR software and Payroll systems.. For example, the focal compensation module is not as robust as that offered by HRSoft, the Time Tracking module is not as robust as Kronos. The Recruiting module is just being released, and the Total Compensation/ Total Rewards functionality is very limited.

Workday can be slow at times and will just shut down when overused.
The permissions are not easily fixed manually.
The trainers are not knowledgeable about the product and are not very helpful.

I use it quite often to review or change my benefits, beneficiaries, or dependents.

Pros

Ease of use and the quality look of the whole software--Simplistic looks allow for ease of use but these layouts and scheme are exactly what is needed for any person to use and understand the product. I highly appreciate how easy it is for employees to have a part in viewing/changing their own benefits, beneficiaries, and dependents.

Cons

The only suggestion I would make is to increase the height of the viewing boxes. Currently, they are cut off directly after the last line, appearing cramped. However, this is aesthetics.

We moved onto Workday when we did not have a system in place previously. So there was a lot to consider and much work that needed to be done to set up system with our historical data (this was the biggest effort). However once we were set up on Workday, life was so much simpler for our HR department. Processes were followed, employees were more informed about their vacation and benefits information and we finally build the reports we needed to support our growing company!

Cons

I think all of the effort and consultancy hours we spent on delivering workday made this a very costly implementation. The processes of inputting our historical data was a bit chaotic, however Workday was with us all along the process and made sure we had a successful implementation and launch.

I've used Workday Performance Management with 2 different Fortune 500 companies. The fact that 2 different Fortune 500 companies use this tells you it should be pretty good, and I'd agree. The workflow, objectives, and system all seem to go well - it is very user friendly and intuitive. One of the drawbacks that I can think of is that I've had to come up with ways to better capture my updates by time period and milestone - it would be nice if the milestones would have their own section for updates or that each time updates are made it would add the date or time period that it was entered in. I like how the flow is communicated and that the documentation stays in the system so the progress can be tracked.

Pros

Easy to use, intuitive, good workflow, easy to understand. Can make things public or private; can cascade goals. Lots of user options.

Cons

Tracking can get hard - it is not clear always which milestones are being updated or how the progress was made over time.

Workday is used as our company's tool for performance management as well as compensation. It's extremely easy to use and very user-friendly. Anything you're looking for can be accessed within 2-4 clicks and the page is never crowded with too much information. In 2015, our company moved to Workday to house employee performance goals and reviews. This tool has the option to conduct reviews of direct reports and also has the ability to collect reviews from direct reports about their direct managers. There's an awesome audit trail as well as approval process. All changes are tracked and it's good that this tool allows the option for dual acknowledgement of year-end reviews (from the employee and their direct manager). Would highly recommend for companies of all sizes.

This software flat out stinks. It's cumbersome, too many buttons and many of them lead you astray to a place you do not want to go, reporting is terrible, and the worst part is the offer stage is the hardest thing, it's like threading a needle multiple times. As a recruiter for ten years the last thing you want to struggle on is getting an offer letter to a candidate, you work hard enough just to get them there and now you have to deal with software issues? I had to ask several candidates to reapply after getting the offer cause they have all these ass backwards rules. Trust me I've implemented and worked on better ones ten years ago than this one.

Stay far away from this software, one of the three reasons why I quit a place I worked at was because of this software. It's a big fat complicated beast that spoils recruiting. It's not hard to find something better, there are hundreds just pick anyone than this.

The user experience is amongst the worst I've seen for ATS'. The tool is definitely not intuitive and it is not easy to manipulate unless you have a team dedicated to it.

Workday is a big system and not for a small Company. They are also expensive and use a ticketing customer service model so you can't just pick up the phone and call when you have an issue. Once you do put in a ticket it is a 24-72 hour turnaround before they even call back. They also charge by the hour for the service. If you want to make any changes to it, you have to be able to code at a certain level and then again, they charge you for everything. Including setting up Open Enrollment for Benefits to setting up Performance Management.

Pros

Once it is up and running it is sophisticated.

Cons

Too expensive for smaller company and too difficult to understand at first.

Advice to Others

Make sure to really inquire about the total cost of the product from implementation to customer service.
