Zenefits' human resources information system (HRIS) features an intuitive, thoughtfully designed interface. Since it’s Web-based, it is compatible with both Macs and iPads.

This solution has the price point for companies that are interested in utilizing Zenefits to manage their health insurance—zero. The health insurance carrier covers the cost of supporting, maintaining and developing the solution, and companies can choose from a comprehensive list of applications including Core HR, Benefits Administration, On-Boarding, Employee Scheduling and more. All are available for free.

When new employees are hired, human resources (HR) professionals using Zenefits only need to complete five online fields to begin their On-Boarding. Employees sign all agreements online, and Zenefits takes care of the rest. When employees leave, it takes a single click to remove them from payroll and benefits and initiate COBRA setup. Employees needing to update their benefits due to a life event can do it themselves through Zenefit’s user-friendly employee portal.

Implementing Zenefits is simple. Users can directly connect with current payroll, health insurance and other systems in seconds; they also can use Zenefits to set up new payroll, insurance, retirement plans and more. Zenefits has a development team that makes weekly changes based on user feedback. They also have a team of in-house HR, payroll and insurance specialists to answer questions via phone or email.

Zenefits is a great HR administrative tool that is very user-friendly and there is always a representative to assist either by phone or email within 24 hours of request. Provides many HR administrative duties which save HR time to focus on more important things such as strategic HR. It is free service if the company goes with Zenefits as their Benefits Broker. However, to be honest, the Zenefits Advisors are not efficient. The worse part about going through Zenefits our Benefits Broker is that our health insurance open enrollment was not a smooth process. In the end, we found out our employees was enrolled in the incorrect plan and that we were not made aware of HSA incompatibility vs comparable plans. As a result causes my company to pay extra for our current HSA administrator.

Pros

Very current up-to-date technology. Allows smooth onboarding, paid-time-off record keeping, and records HR administration. Very optimistic, upbeat, helpful customer service.

Cons

Can never get a hold of our assigned point of contact or a representative immediately or directly. Benefits advisors were not efficient with assisting and helping my company through health insurance open enrollment.

Advice to Others

I do not recommend using Zenefits as a benefits broker if you need major assistance with the health insurance enrollment process.

We have been extremely happy with our move to Zenefits. The ease of processing info for the ACA and our open enrollment for benefits has been a breeze. The team at Zenefits have always responded in a timely manner when we had an issue and very courteous always.

Pros

The pros are that it takes hours off of my workload. We are sent e-mails to remind us of hire dates, termination dates, a calendar of employee birthdays and hire date anniversaries. It's very informative and helpful.

Cons

The cons really isn't Zenefits, it's our employees using Zenefits as they should

Advice to Others

My only advice is to give them a try. We were told by our former broker that we would be back in a year and that Zenefits is new and not very organized, etc. but his advice was not taken and Zenefits was the best choice for us.

Thanks to zenefits we have been able to recruit some world class talent and keep them happy with minimal HR interactions. My company, about ~75 large, enrolled with Zenefits in early 2015. We already had our own payroll, onboarding, and benefits brokers in place; some (onboarding and most benefits) we transitioned to Zenefits. To date, we have been somewhat happy with the system, though it is not as seamless or as flexible as might be liked, especially as a company retrofits their offerings to the Zenefits system (eg, rollover of brokers and benefits plans was quite poorly handled by account managers and 'experts'). We have also had ~8 account managers over less than 2 years, which is frustrating to us as well as indicative of a company in some turmoil; neither they nor Support have necessarily been particularly knowledgeable about some standard HR policy, as well as their internal functioning. That said, for an inexpensive product it does perform much of the HR paperwork, admin, and processing; it also provides helpful reminders and processing regarding ACA regulations, EEOC reports, etc.

Pros

Fairly comprehensive in what it offers, and is increasingly customizable in its various offerings. Support is kind and prompt, though not always the most immediately knowledgeable. Reports for business are easy to pull and very useful. Very clear, straightforward, and user-friendly interface, for both employees and admins.

Cons

Rollover of plans and brokers can be a real hassle, and the Zenefits account managers aren't always the most knowledgeable or the most immediate links to benefits vendors. The software on the back-end is still buggy and may hit tech snags. Employee interactions are for the most part positive, but there was a COBRA issue that went on for months. Similarly, when requesting a training on 'what health insurance is, and what my options are' the manager mostly took us through 'how to upload your profile pic' (granted, this was early 2015, I think those offerings have either been improved or abolished).

Advice to Others

Good match companies that are just setting up internal HR, payroll, benefits plans, etc, and don't require any rollovers or retrofitting. Overall the platform and company are still definitely experiencing growing pains, but if it can double down on its core offerings and also begin to hire increasingly knowledgeable experts in specific HR and benefits areas, is a great resource for a price.

It was very difficult trying to find the perfect software for my business, but when I cam across Zenefits, it was simply the best. It's easy to use and it's straight forward. I am a huge fan of Zenefits. As the HR and office manager for a non-profit school, we are growing very quickly and I needed a resource where I could streamline our on-boarding, get rid of hard copies, and manage our staff's employee files and paid time off in one place. I started using Zenefits this past August and have had a wonderful experience with the product and the customer service. Someone is willing to help and getting back to me. I find emailing is the quickest way to get a response, which is my preferred communication as well. Since I have started using Zenefits under the direction of their new CEO, they are continuing to grow and improve their already great platform. The set up time is as to be expected since not every company is the same and each company's needs are different. I am a huge fan and supporter of Zenefits and their customer service. I am excited to grow with this company and their product.

Pros

Onboarding new employees and getting all of their paperwork done takes me a few clicks of a mouse to get all of the information to the employee. I am able to manage and track PTO by just downloading a report, and most importantly, everything is done in one place.

Cons

You have to pay to use their payroll service =)

Advice to Others

If there is a glitch or something is wrong and you ask a customer service rep about it, it usually gets handled with in 24 hours. Remember you are not their only customer.

I had some difficulty entering employees and then having to go back to update. It was not enough difficulty to cause frustration, but finally I was able to figure it out. I like that it is free until you utilize the tools needed. I would recommend due to ease of use and friendly staff and Customer Service.

Our organization had a startup date of 11/1/2016. We did not start the implementation until the end of September 2016. We started on time and was able to complete the complete open enrollment by 11/30/2016.

Pros

It has saved me numerous hours of work which I can devote to other areas of my job.

Cons

I have not found a negative aspect of the support our organization get from Zenefits.

Advice to Others

Ask questions and take a chance! We did not have an HR software before moving to Zenefits. We are please with our situation and are no longer concerned if we are timely with our compliance for COBRA, ACA and onboarding and offer of benefits.

Zenefits is an easy to use system that is highly beneficial for businesses under 100 people. As we begin to grow, we will need to purchase a new system. This is because we don't want to pay an additional fee for each added application. We would rather have one all-in-one system.

I had the opportunity to move to the Zenefits platform from a larger HR software platform. The main reason for the move was due to budgeting constraints with our business. I was rewarded through this change by gaining a system that was easy to use on both the administration side as well as the end user side. In fact, I was given a compliment on the Zenefits platform by the head of our IT department. He commented that both the look and feel of the Zenefits platform was a huge improvement to the system that we used previously.

Pros

Employees were able to complete onboarding online which sped up the HR paperwork process as well as allows documents to be stored on the cloud. The Zenefits platform also allowed employees to update their personal, banking, tax information on their own without having to complete the work via a paper process as we had in the past.

Cons

Because Zenefits is acting as your insurance broker, you must work through them for all edits, changes, or updates. This process took longer than we had been used to because we had managed everything on our end working straight through the insurance carrier.

Advice to Others

Think about all the numerous tasks that you do regarding your employee online files, benefits, and payroll management. Then talk each process through with the Zenefits team so you understand how things work with their company so you know what to expect.

I have had so many problems, I could not even list all. It states it can pull data from current payroll to upload into their system. It did that with incorrect PAY and START DATE information, therefore I had incorrect deduction for employees due to different start dates. I am still working on this with them and it is been over 3 weeks. They have now come up with 3 different start dates.

Overall I wish I never wasted my time with them.

The products goals is really to allow employees to handle all HR related decisions online so that HR reps don't need to handle. Employees can enroll and terminate benefits, address changes, vacation requests all from their computer or mobile device. Also all offer letters and signing of electronic documents goes directly through zenefits. This is especially helpful for automatically getting all employees to sign your policy book, non solicitation etc. without needing any paper copies or scanning into a company database.

Likes Least

You will be assigned an Account Manager who is very responsive and good. However a lot of more technical questions, like why is there an issue with an employees benefits, need to be handled by specialists that can take a good few days or more to get an answer with. Items that need to be looked into deeper do take a bit of time

Recommendations

For a small HR department this software is great, really makes benefits administration and vacation requests a breeze and takes off HR. We also use their payroll which is surprisingly easy and effective. I think it is as good as many versions of ADP I've used and is lower cost.

Easy to use, pretty intuitive product with a great support team that deals with all the issues that arise with insurance brokers. As a hiring manager, hiring and onboarding is extremely easy and makes it so I don't have to worry about anything except obtaining i-9 documents on day 1. Every tool they have offer is very user friendly. Also, its FREE.

Limited relationships as far as insurance brokers go but we were able to find something that worked for our company. Adding new documents/offer letters during the hiring process takes a few days which can slow down the process. Mobile app has very limited functionality. Account Managers can be hard to get a hold of some times and its easy to just go to the Support Team with questions.

Recommendations

Take into consideration that this is a free product when comparing it to other, usually expensive, HRIS platforms. If you want all the bells and whistles, you'll pay for it but our company has been overall very happy with Zenefits.

I like the interface and ease of use of the product. It is usually very easy to find the individuals and data that I need.

Likes Least

I wish the product offered better reporting, especially change reporting, and was able to integrate with our payroll provider. Because we don't have either, we spend a lot of time making sure we are correctly transferring employee changes in the system to our payroll processor. Additionally, the email that comes with employee changes is often outdated - an employee changes his bank account for direct deposit but then we don't get the email until two weeks later, well after the payroll has run.

Recommendations

Make sure you understand your needs and if they will be met. For a simple HR management tool, Zenefits is great. For anything beyond that, you might want to look into more sophisticated software options.
