E2 Shop System Software

E2 by Shoptech Corporation brings all business operations into a single simple solution, from estimating to scheduling, purchasing, shipping and even customer management and accounting, with its easy-to-use solution. Designed specifically for job shops, contract and a variety of make-to-order manufacturers, Shoptech's comprehensive ERP helps job shops run more smoothly, while increasing both productivity and profits.

E2 simplifies estimating, allowing users to create both "quickie quotes" and complex estimates on labor, overhead, material, etc., that can be faxed or emailed with attached drawings or pictures. These quotes can be automatically turned into orders, with no double entry required.

E2 automatically generates shipping labels and packing slips and then tracks shipments online to multiple shipping addresses. Its materials management module controls all components and parts, aligning the company's purchase needs with the entered orders, as well as tracking delivery and finding the best prices.

E2's scheduling module eliminates guesswork, while its contact management module helps shops ensure that everyone stays on the same page, from the shop floor to the end client. It also pulls in all business financials, so shops can manage payroll, accounts payable and receivable and general ledger from a single location, as well as using one of the 200 built-in reports for comprehensive analysis.

All of these features are supported by Shoptech's national network of regional offices and training centers, as well as a 'round-the-clock techncal service center.

As more modules become implemented, the system builds in a synergistic way and adds more value and organization to our operations. The system allows us a lot of control over our process and becomes a great tool that can be used to train new people to the business, completing their role correctly and consistently with existing employees. With E2, our sales team always has instant information and history on any past customer transactions and can reference old orders and data very quickly and easily.

Likes Least

We are limited to what the system can or cannot do; sometimes, we need to change and conform to work within it's capabilities. We are still struggling with challenges on scheduling employees vs work centers.

Recommendations

Take the time to set up everything as well as possible. Better setup and better input will give much better results. Implement one thing at a time; take the biggest priorities and needs of your company and start there. As you grow, perform and become comfortable with the system, then start adding on and implementing more.

Sometimes we struggle to fully utilize the Scheduling module with our operation's complex scheduling challenges.

Recommendations

We were able to install sample demo software and spent a fair amount of time processing some sample orders from estimating to shipment. This gave us a good feel on the capabilities of the software. Take advantage of as much training as possible.

We love being able to see concise pricing history on purchases and parts quoted. We also like being able tie a specific PO to a specific job requirement. It is invaluable in cost analysis.

Likes Least

The visual scheduling portion (whiteboard) isn't very useful to us since you cannot customize it to exclude sub-assemblies. However, E2 support made sure we knew where to find a report that we could easily customize to meet our scheduling needs.

Recommendations

This is a very powerful tool and you can use it to any level of detail. Keep in mind that no ERP will be a 100% perfect fit for your company unless it was specifically designed for you. You will need to make some adjustments to make E2 work for your company. If you are having trouble with it, call your sales rep. Tech support isn't always as knowledgeable as the person your sales rep can put you in touch with.

The shop floor management part of the system is very good.

The support provided by Shoptech has been excellent. They respond quickly and are very helpful.

Likes Least

The accounting module is very elementary and badly designed. If I were to do it again, I would link the system with QuickBooks and not use the Shoptech accounting module at all.

Recommendations

Ensure that you thoroughly understand the shop floor module.

I would like to be able to open more than one module section at a time. If you are working on a quote or building a job and need to check on something in the Quality module, you need to close it out or open a new session altogether.

Get the Quality module when you start. It sets you up with everything you need documents-wise to get your ISO certification started.

Very user-friendly, except for the scheduling module. I use the accounting side more than the production side, and I find it very easy to use. If you run into a problem, customer service will always help you out and is very friendly.

Likes Least

The scheduling system. It really depends on the product that's manufactured. Sometimes, we have hot jobs that need to be put into production right away, and that seems to cause problems. The scheduling module is very in-depth, and in order to understand it, I believe you need to have a background or some knowledge of production scheduling to operate this part of the system properly.

Recommendations

I don't really know much about other software for smaller companies. All I can do is compare E2 to something like QuickBooks, and E2 is way above.

I think you should always look at how the software will effect your workforce. Always remember that everyone may not see it the same way you do. Don't pick software that will make other people's work more frustrating.

E2 is easy to use, and with the lightning bolt capabilities, it makes it easy for people within the organization to look up information without having the fear of messing something up. Keeping track of parts throughout the manufacturing process is a breeze using this product.

Everyone in the technical support division has been great to work with.

The ability to see historical pricing and link purchase orders to jobs is quite helpful. The time tracking for direct labor is also very useful and functional.

Likes Least

Very limited and not flexible. If you are a job shop, the inventory function is all but useless. Assembly pricing is difficult and time consuming. The scheduling whiteboard is useless if you make assemblies. E2 automatically assigns sub-assembly parts a due date of the day you enter the job. There is no way to remove the sub-assembly parts from the whiteboard to see an overview of the jobs you have in-house and when they are due.

E2 generates an inordinate amount of paperwork. Customer support is not knowledgeable or open to suggestions or helpful with workarounds.

Recommendations

Buyer beware. While it may seem to have all the functionality you desire, you may be sorely disappointed after implementation.

All the functions are bunched in like a Russian doll. I am very surprised that this software is on the top for job shop. Whoever rated this software has no idea about flexible use, navigating, and flexible reporting.

Recommendations

Review carefully the limitation. It is not a flexible software. Especially accounting. You don't see any of the inventory/WIP/FG related GL's transactions at all. Job costing is not clearly visible. There is no order/project cost. Review carefully about exporting basic data for reporting purposes. Every form's format is fixed. You don't have the option of adjusting any of it. Forms like PO, SO, Invoice, Returns, Acknowledgment. There is no layout option.

Most entries have similar screens. I can be sure that whatever it is we need to do will not be supported by this software. The salesman runs through the software so quickly you cannot tell that it is not going to work for you.

Likes Least

There is poor training, it's not flexible, and the reports cannot be changed. It has a clumsy interface, maintenance fees. What else do you need to know? This software produces more work than solve anything at all.

Recommendations

Be sure that you run your business the way E2 is set up, or you will have a hard time trying to tweak everything to work with your business. It might be best for a shop that is just starting so you can run the business the E2 way.

The best thing about E2 is the ease of use and fairly straightforward implementation. It is a very powerful tool for the money. It's a great value! The training staff and tech help are very supportive. The quality module was a great surprise and impressed auditors.

Likes Least

The least favorable portion of the software is the bland reports and difficulty with customized queries. The initial training was a bit superficial. The intense training in Las Vegas is definitely a must.

Recommendations

I definitely recommend that you ask a reference company that does work similar to your own to give their opinion of the software and even schedule a visit to review how they use the software. I found that companies were very willing to share their experiences with the software. I also recommend that companies ask very specific questions regarding the accounting interface with E2. It is quite robust, but does require some level of diligence with transaction entry.

One weakness we have found is the software should have drill down capabilities similar to QuickBooks. We constantly have to enter date fields and generate a report to extract details. Our example is payroll. We use the interface with QuickBooks to import payroll details.

We were using a combination of QuickBooks (for invoicing), Excel (for inventory), and handwritten notes in folders to do our daily tasks. Now, I use E2 for all three of these, and it is a huge time saver! Everything is done in one program that will still integrate with Quickbooks for banking purposes. Any time I've had a question, I've gotten very quick responses with complete explanations from all the staff at ShopTech. I wish we had had access to this software when our company was started!
