E2 by Shoptech Corporation brings all business operations into a single simple solution, from estimating to scheduling, purchasing, shipping and even customer management and accounting, with its easy-to-use solution. E2 simplifies estimating, allowing users to create both "quickie quotes" and complex estimates on labor, overhead, material, etc., that can be faxed or emailed with attached drawings or pictures. These quotes can be automatically turned into orders, with no double entry required.

E2 automatically generates shipping labels and packing slips and then tracks shipments online to multiple shipping addresses. Its materials management module controls all components and parts, aligning the company's purchase needs with the entered orders, as well as tracking delivery and finding the best prices.

E2's scheduling module eliminates guesswork, while its contact management module helps shops ensure that everyone stays on the same page, from the shop floor to the end client. It also pulls in all business financials, so shops can manage payroll, accounts payable and receivable and general ledger from a single location, as well as using one of the 200 built-in reports for comprehensive analysis.

Make sure it fits your needs based on the size of the company. I'm not sure how well it would work for companies with 150+ employees.

This software has a great capacity for customization, which is great for a shop like ours that does very few repeat orders and has relaxed relationships with many of our customers.

It is a very complex software bundle, and if you don't have anyone in your company assigned to handle the intricacies, you will find the system to be rather frustrating.

Recommendations

When installing E2, be sure that you have the intel to set it up and run it properly. As long as there is at least one person assigned to monitor inputs to the system and interface with E2 support on occasion, you should have a smooth roll-out and better visibility of your shop activity than you ever thought possible in one place. Also, do buy the yearly support package. It is worth it.

The best feature of E2 software is the ability to "route" a part for kitting. This program will allow item to be
linked to a part number for kitting purposes.

Very well established software and very predictable. If there is a problem, the support team has the answer, and if necessary custom features can be added.

Some lists duplicate and cannot be sorted for ease of finding a particular document when in an order or quote. This is not an issue when in the documents module. Scheduling module is not ever working perfectly.

Recommendations

Make sure whatever you evaluate is as thorough as this. From Customer entry through shipping and invoicing, this software does it front to back.

The best aspect about using E2 is access to support when required. Over the 2 years we have been using this product, we have reached out to technical support numerous times to maximize the value out of all the modules. Most of the support staff at E2 are very knowledgeable about the product or would point us to a more senior technical person if a challenge is not easily fixed. In addition, E2 takes customer feedback on usability and improvements very seriously and most recommendations are provided in follow-on updates quickly.

Product speed can certainly be improved upon. Given this is SQL based system, product reaction time and processing time was below expectations upon initial implementation. However, many speed related improvements have been made by E2 to correct for those issues. While improvements areas still exist in this area, it has become better over time for the SQL version.

Recommendations

The evaluation team should come up with real BOM's and process flows based on their company's day to day operations and replicate that during the evaluation process. Using the generic 10 line sales BOM is not helpful if the real BOMs are hundreds of lines deep.

The ease of use from creating an estimate all the way through issuing a customer invoice is great. The software is laid out that mimics our business process very well. Once you you learn one module, the next module becomes very intuitive to learn.

The cost of extra seats even if you have a user that just need viewing ability. There should be separate costs for view only versus full data entry. The GUI (appearance) needs updated.

Tech support and customer service is wonderful. Rarely on hold for very long to get through to support. If they can't help me immediately they always call me back. And usually with a minimal wait.

Consider that this program is very user friendly. Allowing you to keep some information together to save time. I would suggest speaking also with some current users to get a better feel for what you would be getting.

Reports in general are not great. Many reports are poorly thought out and not from a users point of view but rather a programmer. Customization is not easily (or cheaply) accomplished.

E2 software is easy to use and easy to navigate. I have been using E2 for 16+ years and it has grown with our company. E2 has made us more efficient in all areas of our manufacturing. We use all modules from quoting to general ledger and are very pleased. The staff at E2 are always eager to help with any concerns we may have.

I have no complaints about E2. The staff works hard to fix any issues that occur.

Recommendations

Investigate and research exactly what you want the software to do and what you need to grow your company. Encourage input from floor personnel to office personnel that will be using the software. E2 is very user friendly and implementing it was very easy for us and the help of the E2 staff.

Customer support is easy to access, prompt, and very knowledgeable. For a small shop like the one I work in (less than 20 employees) going from a completely analog based system to a digital one saves a ton of time when it comes to recalling information. Being able to keep track of jobs, purchases, and inventory was our main goal and was accomplished easily using E2.

Update: Previously I was critical of the state the software is currently in and was contacted by Shoptech to gain some insight on the complete overhaul E2 is going through. We had a very informative web demo and am thoroughly impressed with the improvements that are in store. The new interface is much more intuitive while still keeping the core functionality of the current E2 system, so transitioning for end-users should be relatively easy. The power and flexibility of the system has been enriched, bringing multiple open modules, higher limits on searches, easier search filtering; essentially the ability to get/enter information faster and with fewer clicks. Scalability is coming too! It’s an update that I’m looking forward to getting.

The web demo answers many grievances that we have with the current E2 software. An issue, from a small shop perspective, that came up was that of added cost. Everything discussed during the demo regarding pricing is unconfirmed, but due to the nature of how the new system will be implemented an added cost may be incurred separate from the current OPTIONAL maintenance structure. Many small shops will have to weigh the benefits of maintaining a subscription to that of staying with the older system they’re currently using. Hopefully scale of operations is taken into consideration when the actual prices are set.

Recommendations

I will definitely be revising this review after the update is implemented (for better or worse). For now, if you’re in the market for shop software definitely give E2 a look and ask about the new system in the works.

We have been using E2 in our shop for over ten years, and it has proven itself worthy of the investment time and time again. It is a thorough and well rounded system which assists us in successfully tracking our work load, material inventory, customer database, etc. Utilizing the scheduling tools, such as the Whiteboard, has become essential for evaluating our WIP, providing an overview of jobs in process and tracking due dates. The time tickets and performance summaries are extremely beneficial in measuring employee efficiencies. We are in regular communication with technical support, customizing the individual modules to accommodate the evolution of our business practices and constantly growing and changing capabilities. They have helped us create custom reports and summaries which allow us to categorically track productivity and expenses across the board.

The major issue we have with the software is the cost of additional seats. Our company has maintained strong, consistent growth over the past decade and as we have expanded, it has been difficult to justify the cost of additional users. As we tend to hold out on purchasing new seats until absolutely necessary, it would be nice to see some price breaks as we continue to add users.

Recommendations

Get started on the right foot. Evaluate your needs and business practices, and set up E2 to work for you from day one. Data entry is key in building thorough and easily maintained databases, and the more you put in to it, the more benefits you will see in the end results. If something isn't working right or doesn't meet your expectations, use the customer support and tech support to get it streamlined and tailored to your specifications. No software is perfect, but you can most likely make E2 work for you.

The product is a comprehensive job tracking system. When using the individual "modules" in the correct order in creating parts, quotes, jobs, purchases, shipments, etc. you will be able to trace, track, run reports and get great information. Shoptech as a vendor has always been extremely helpful when you contact them. You will not sit on hold for hours like with some other vendors. You will find both basic information and more extensive information on their website either through webinars, help papers, virtual training classes and also User Discussion Boards. Should you not find the information which you are seeking, their staff is very informative and will not leave you in a bind.

The vendor is very upfront about what their system will and will not accomplish. I miss my accounting bells and whistles with having real time reporting at my finger tips (however, they do provide a "Quick-view" area in which to get real time data for various areas in the system such as job status, parts/customer/vendor inquiries and information, PO status, etc. The worst issue that I can state is that in order to take a look at where items are hitting the G/L, the month in question has to be posted. In order to make any changes, the months have to be unposted. Users should not be in the "Accounting area" when this is being done. AND the worst part in using the audit trail to see which user possibly edited something, no matter where in the system, the audit trail will only tell you who viewed, possibly edited, but will not give you further information to solve your puzzles as to who did what, when and why.

Recommendations

I believe when evaluating software of this nature, you should fully understand your company, processes, your internal system of operations, what your needs are, what issues you believe that you have. Speak with and involve your employees as they are the individuals which do the processing of what your company produces. Evaluate the tools which you are currently using along with their advantages and dis-advantages. Quite often the users, your employees are the individuals who may be able to shed light on areas that you would never suspect.
