E2 Shop System Software

E2 by Shoptech Corporation brings all business operations into a single simple solution, from estimating to scheduling, purchasing, shipping and even customer management and accounting, with its easy-to-use solution. Designed specifically for job shops, contract and a variety of make-to-order manufacturers, Shoptech's comprehensive ERP helps job shops run more smoothly, while increasing both productivity and profits.

E2 simplifies estimating, allowing users to create both "quickie quotes" and complex estimates on labor, overhead, material, etc., that can be faxed or emailed with attached drawings or pictures. These quotes can be automatically turned into orders, with no double entry required.

E2 automatically generates shipping labels and packing slips and then tracks shipments online to multiple shipping addresses. Its materials management module controls all components and parts, aligning the company's purchase needs with the entered orders, as well as tracking delivery and finding the best prices.

E2's scheduling module eliminates guesswork, while its contact management module helps shops ensure that everyone stays on the same page, from the shop floor to the end client. It also pulls in all business financials, so shops can manage payroll, accounts payable and receivable and general ledger from a single location, as well as using one of the 200 built-in reports for comprehensive analysis.

All of these features are supported by Shoptech's national network of regional offices and training centers, as well as a 'round-the-clock techncal service center.

The reports provide as much data, or as little data, as you want. The ability to "quickview" to several areas of a part, material, or customer information keeps from having to navigate through several screens. A great combination of manufacturing, quality, and accounting. The cost of the software was a key factor in the purchase. The technical support is top notch! The trainers are very knowledgeable and patient.

Constant glitches and updates. They state the updates are done every 6 weeks or so, but it feels they arrive more frequently than that. It feels like we get constant error messages or need to reboot the server to "unlock" locked files.

There is much to this program and it takes a lot of time to learn all the features and uses. Once you get familiar with it, the amount of data and information it provides is awesome.

We deal with a lot of large assemblies & stock jobs...that gets very complicated. Also, we get releases on jobs that we must indicate with a release number. Since these releases can be for the same ship dates we run into a problem because we can't put in deliveries for the same dates.

The designers clearly have knowledge of a shop environment and are pretty comprehensive in touching all the aspects of a job shop. The sales team is very accessible. The product is very easy to get up and operational with which may be attractive to shops starting out or implementing this type of system for the first time. The software does have controls over what users can do what which is useful for keeping employees in check. The reports that it generates are concise and professional looking out of the box.

Likes Least

The interface is woefully outdated and lacks cohesiveness throughout, data entry practices in one area do not apply to others and certainly do not conform to defacto software standards. Its a bit embarrassing having state of the art CAD/CAM systems with wonderful imagery next to something that looks straight out of 1996. Looks are one thing but we have had a lot of time lost due to slow workflow and data entry errors. It will open many windows and dialog boxes which demand screen focus. Not only is it cumbersome to work in other windows applications with E2 running, you can not even run more than one task at a time inside of it. The software does not scale well to high resolutions or multiple screens. The software rarely fails gracefully, you'll get cryptic error messages in never ending loops.

The software relies on a number of 3rd party frameworks including outdated Java runtimes (insecure) All of your data is stored MSJet databases, for those not tech savvy, its late 1980's technology that is isn't supported by Microsoft any more and was never really designed to be scaled to the point you can potentially reach. They do offer an upgrade to MS SQL which comes at a significant cost (which doesn't include SQL server itself or migration services) and it has the added bonus of breaking any custom reports (which are also expensive commissioned work). Although some user controls are present, there isn't granular control over everything in the system. Its very possible users without clearance to certain information can gain access to things they shouldn't. (ie: ITAR)

Nearly every other vendor is offering some type of cloud integration, and although E2 does offer a component called webview (no surprise, its an additional fee), its really a customer portal and doesn't offer much in terms of what a company employee would need. The software will not play nicely across multiple networks, we had several locations connected via VPN which Shoptech does not support. Their solution was to use MS terminal services which is cumbersome and requires additional licensing. In today's global economy, accessibility should be paramount, not a vendor locked afterthought.

The software does have provisions for shop floor data collection and although it does work, its cumbersome and our busy and non-technical shop floor staff abhor it and we eventually abandoned it.

Support was initially good but as our business grew and our implementation of the software became more complex support has been slow to respond (if at all) and many of the ongoing problems we are facing haven't been satisfactorily resolved.

Recommendations

Although to get started it comes in at an attractive price point, growth will necessitate constant upgrades, many of which are for options and components standard in other packages from the get go. I'd focus on software that leverages newer technology with a clear upgrade path. Shoptech's sales staff is very good at convincing you of all the benefits of MRP but fails to address TCO especially in terms of supporting their product. For an organization with >10 concurrent users, the amount of administration that the system requires is fairly considerable.

The product has allowed us to keep track of our jobs and have them organized. It has streamlined our process and has cut the time it takes for us to get going. The vendor answers questions in a timely manner. They also have a lot of videos on their website that answers a lot of the questions you might have.

Likes Least

I am not a fan of the fact that some of the more important aspect of the product are not explained in the videos. For example, the quality module is touched upon but not necessarily explained. If a person buys a module, I feel the vendor should have some free classes to make sure people are using it correctly. I don't think it's right to sell something but not offer free help when you first purchase it.

Recommendations

Make sure that you watch videos that show what the software can do, but pay attention to what it can't do. It would not be worth the money to buy something and realize it can't do something in specific, or how you like to do it.

It's the first software that try's to get the shop floor to communicate flawlessly with the office work, witch we all know was impossible thanks to human errors!

The price is hard for a small start up company, and the implantation is hard for a company who has never had a system in place before...a lot of the shop jargon needs to be cleared up with maybe a better; if your this type of company this is what we see most shops do/use/operate....this is what E2 thinks "job order" means, this is what we E2 says a "work order" is; and this is how they work together in the system!!! Of course that's more for the place's who don't have a system yet or even the ones who want to start from the ground up.

Recommendations

Use it all...There's no reason to not use E2 to it's full capacity! The software is made to keep track of the events happening on the shop floor, and that means EVERYTHING going on is at your finger tips!

Shop Tech support has been very helpful at times when it was needed and we love how easy E2 is to learn and use. When I started my job 2 years ago I was offered to attend an off site overnight training but decided to learn the software myself and it was quite easy to do. I have actually taught other users things that they never knew how to do and they had been using it for 10+ years. E2 is the largest reason that our shop has become 100% efficient with on time delivery, and being in the aerospace manufacturing industry we all know how important that it! The HOT SPOTS tool & LOADING SUMMARY are used daily.................

I have used multiple ERP systems some of them rather expensive with a large learning curve, when I went looking for a ERP system for our machine shop, one of the leading criteria was that the ERP would have, or support the AS9100 standard. E2 was the only one that offered a QA module to help create our AS9100 documentation, then as a bonus E2 had a consultant come out and help set up our AS9100 Quality Management System, to top it off, another consultant came back out a few month later to do an audit of our documentation to make sure we were ready to take on the AS9100 registrar. E2 does have an AP & AR module however we wanted to be able to keep our financial information separate in QuickBooks, this ERP system allows you to flow order and purchase order information seamlessly from E2 to QuickBooks by syncing this information over. I really hope companies that are looking for an ERP system make E2 their choice. I did a lot of painstaking research on this and wish I would have found reviews of ERP systems like this to help me along. E2 does what it takes to run a business effectively and as an added surprise the software is cost effective as well.

Likes Least

The only Area I have had a challenge with would be the timeclock buzzer, the timeclock portion is provided by one of E2's partners and we recently had the buzzer stop working well, the e2 sofware is pinging the correct signal however the buzzer is not working correctly. So really this doesnt seem to be a E2 issue it is a computerwise issue (computerwise is the timeclock system)

Recommendations

I have told everyone that has asked me about a ERP system, that Shoptech E2 ERP system is the way to go, in fact a fabrication shop that does business a few miles away from our business had a ERP system that just didn't seem to work very well for his business, I share with him that we were using E2 shoptech ERP, he decided to look into the software and decided to purchase this ERP for his business as well.
Lastly I had a large Aerospace electronics company come in last week to do a AS9100 vendor audit on us, and as I was showing the QA manager all of the documentation he required for the audit, he noticed that I was accessing it all though Our ERP, he stopped the audit to ask if all of the documentation I had for AS9100 could be pulled from our ERP system, I said yes this is one of the reasons we went this ERP route, he asked for the software information and approximate cost and said this is what their company was looking for. Great Job Shoptech Keep it up!!!

As General Manager for a small family run job shop what I liked most about E2 was their customer service and support as well as the user friendly interface that the software provides. E2 is a simple to use yet powerful MRP system that allowed us to go from all manual processes (e.g., quoting, order processing, invoicing, etc.) to a fully computerized, database driven system that allows us to track jobs, cycle times, attendance, etc. With different modules you can add on when you are ready, E2 is ready to grow with your business as you need! It does everything our shop needs it to do!

Likes Least

No complaints! We have renewed our maintenance every year because we like the support and updates we get to keep an updated system at all times.

Recommendations

When comparing other products, really make sure you focus on the interface and ''user-friendly'' ability of inputting data and generating reports. This was something that we noticed right away when we compared E2 with other systems. The way the software is laid out makes it easy to understand and interact with E2 to get the results you need. Also, check about the customer service because E2's service and help line is second to none!

Our firm is a fabrication company making custom products for customers; we typically make many of the same products each month but everything is made to order and we don't carry inventory because everything is shipped upon completion. E2 works well with our every changing fabrication needs. When you purchase the software E2 assigns a Technical Support Specialist that is available via the phone or webex and this group is very responsive and helpful. The E2 training and support staff are outstanding, the product is easy to use; I highly recommend the software.

Likes Least

No negative issues with the vendor at all. Printing reports within the software is based on Crystal Reports; customizing the E2 Reports can be done but it is not easy. I wish we could customize the Job Traveler and other reports without having to rely on an outside vendor with knowledge of Crystal Reports.

Recommendations

Transitioning to a new software program can be challenging and I strongly recommend running a "Test Company" prior to going live with E2. The software has many great features but our "Test Company" revealed that we needed to revisit our "Part Numbers and Part Descriptions". We are now using many more "Job Travelers" than anticipated - this is not a problem, just something that we identified in the "Test Company".
