IntelleChart Software

IntelleChart has been serving eye care practices for over 10 years. Their solution provides a collaborative, knowledge-driven clinical system for growing high-pathology ophthalmology clinics and retinal specialists.

IntelleChart users have the ability to customize the certified EHR to meet their unique workflows and then share best practices for diagnostics, treatments, and other findings with peers within their subspecialty. This Shared Knowledge Base keeps teams from having to develop methods and practices from the ground up.

As a cloud-based system, IntelleChart helps eliminate the expenses incurred when implementing a server-based solution, such as hardware and IT backup and support. Practices are charged a flat monthly fee and customer and technical support are available 24/7.

The software offers a proprietary Adaptive Template Technology, allowing offices to generate templates specific to each patient. Combined with the Shared Knowledge Base, menus only populate with relevant choices for more specific charting.

The interface is very well-thought-out. Although it is pick list driven, the pick lists can be easily modified. Also, the drawing program is the best in the market. It's extremely intuitive and conducive for patient flow. Also, letters are easily made and look very good. Cloud-based software reduces the capital investment and IT requirements for implementation.

It is cloud-based, so you are only as good as your internet connection.

I don't think that there is anything in the system that I am looking for that I can't find. Every aspect of an exam is there and loaded with details.

I went to the accelerated training class, but it really wasn't enough. I'm finding things every day that I need to call support for. Now, I will say, that when I call support, they know exactly what I'm talking about and what I need. I haven't had an issue not resolved within two days.

Recommendations

Give yourself plenty of time for implementation. Go slow, and do a few patients a day until you're on it full time. That really worked for us.

I had an EHR for more than five years. During that time, I felt every patient encounter was made more difficult by the interaction with the EHR. The entire time, I was continually looking to get a system that I liked. Despite reviewing many, many products, I repeatedly decided the pain, productivity loss, and cost of switching was too great a burden, so I stayed with an EHR that was a persistent annoyance to myself and my staff. Finally, I found MDIntellesys. This program works exactly as I would hope. The history and exam flows perfectly from tech to physician. Then it flows easily into assessment and plan. It works in the order that we are trained to think. Many programs do not do that, forcing you to change how you think about the patient. The drawing module is very robust, flexible, and fast. The way it handles images mitigates the need for an expensive third-party system. Support is divided into tech support and knowledge base. The knowledge base department does an amazing job at customizing many aspects of the program. However, the good news is that no customization is needed immediately because it is set up so intelligently. So many programs are not functional out of the box because they require a tremendous amount of work to develop your own templates. That is not so with this product. However, over time it can be tweaked and customized easily to increase accuracy and speed based on individual preferences. Support is really excellent, knowledgable, and responsive, but the best news is that you really don't have to call very often because the software is so robust and intuitive. I think the future of EHR is certainly cloud-based, and MDIntellesys is built for the cloud. The advantages of the cloud are too numerous to discuss. Lastly, the price of implementation and support is significantly less than many other inferior products.
Pros: Great support, intuitive structure, fast, excellent drawing, easy to view images, cloud-based, and many more.

Cons: None

All EHRs make life somewhat slower and less efficient in the office, but this EHR is much less apt to do this

Recommendations

Consider it very strongly; it works better than any program I have used or considered.

The product is designed by an ophthalmologist to serve an ophthalmologist's needs, with all the specific functions that an ophthalmologist would need to accurately and completely document a patient's medical record. Specific to the vendor, you will not find an EMR vendor with better customer service; their team is top notch with instant service, as well as follow up.

In rural Oklahoma, internet speed requirements are sometimes a struggle for us, but I would not recommend doing anything but this cloud-based system. Even though it takes a couple extra seconds to open a chart, the peace of mind with the records being safely stored and backed up offsite, as well as the continual upgrades to address the ever-changing governmental requirements, are well worth it.

Recommendations

Investigate internet speeds and options for bandwidth. DSL will suffice but is probably not the best option.

We have just recently reviewed the available EHR products. There are multiple salient reasons we selected MDI. First, we wanted an EHR that was supportive to an ophthalmology-specific work environment, not something derived in another field and built on analogy. We wanted active templates to eliminate time wasted in fighting through irrelevant lists. And, of course, we really did not want to reinvent the wheel, typing every part of the note by hand.

In addition, we wanted a system that could be configured for the needs of our retinologist, and our pedi-ophthalmologist specialist. We also wanted configuration for our neuro-ophthalmology person, our oculoplastics person, and our general ophthalmology doctors. We found this in MDI.

Furthermore, we needed a system that would be cost effective. This is true of the software, and very much so for the hardware. To explain, we have 35+ exam lanes. There are multiple suites for angiography, OCT, laser, ultrasonography, pentacam, IOL Master, visual field suites, and NFL suites. We needed a system that could support our active patient service of 120,000+ in five locations. Therefore, we wanted a highly robust cloud-based system which would be security compliant with HIPPA. We also wanted the network administrator to be able to control access and exit from the network. We wanted a system that worked well for HL7 and was well on its way for HIE. All of these needs came together nicely under MDI.

I understand that you are considering using an iPad based system. I love my iPad for personal use despite its little glitches, limited battery and extremely annoying tendency to complete words for me that then become gibberish. The iPads are also too portable and can walk away, becoming a potential HIPPA violation, not to mention a costly line item to replace (repeatedly). I found a more effective answer to be two 22-23 inch monitors, one of which is a touch screen, allowing all of the visual functionality of an iPad. However, it won't walk away, change what I am writing, or have a battery die.

I've been presenting this information to the other members of the Winchester Hospital eye service, where I get to wear the service chief hat. We have about eleven other doctors representing about five more practices, and they are evaluating MDI for their use. I believe it is the best system I've found so far. I selected it not only for my use, but also for the use of the three other members of my family who also practice ophthalmology with me.

Ophthalmology Associates is an 11 M.D., 2 O.D. subspecialty practice in Fort Worth Texas. Our group started on the EMR journey several years ago with another product. The physicians decided well into the project that the system we were running on was not applicable to ophthalmology in many ways. At an AAO meeting, a couple of our doctors learned of MDI's EMR and were quite impressed with the demonstration.

From that point we have worked with MDI to integrate Intellechart into our practice. It took 2 years for all of our doctors to use the EMR on 100% of our patients, but we are finally there. Our practice has been fortunate enough to contribute to the knowledge base for all the subspecialties in a format that mirrors each of our doctors preferences.

MDI was, and continues to be, cooperative in working through challenges, and, in fact, they consider us as partners during all interactions. The development team at MDI is a smart group of people. Their ability to keep up with the requirements for the Meaningful Use stages is remarkable, and, so far, have not missed a deadline.

To comment on the benefits of having an EMR system in our practice might vary from physician to physician, but overall we realize that EMR is no longer optional and MDI's product is the best we have found.

I am the clinical administrator for one part of a large retinal surgical group. We have been using MDIntellesys since 8/13/12 and have been very satisfied with what the product offers as an EHR system. But any product needs to be supported, and this is what I would like to commend in this review.

I talk often to your Support department. I cannot tell you what a delight it is to ask them questions. They have a vast knowledge of how MDI works, they can almost always answer my questions on the spot, and if not they are diligent to refer the issue on for resolution. I have never had an issue waiting for resolution that was left hanging — your staff has always followed up in a timely manner. Your Support team is to be commended for their knowledge of MDIntellesys, and their care for your customers.

I know MDI is growing, and my hope is that you can maintain the current positive Support experience as you grow. Keep up the good work!

We are a general ophthalmology practice, located in rural Oklahoma, with a solo practitioner. Our implementation of MDI was in January 2012, so at the time of this review, we have been using Intellechart for over 1.5 years.

We originally selected MDI because we liked the option to use a cloud-based software, that would allow updates to be covered in our contract, not requiring constant, considerable capital investment every 6 months to comply with the current constant changing of the industry that we are all facing at this time. We are extremely happy with the software and the support provided to us.

The software is very customizable to suit a general ophthalmology practice, with many functions that no other EMR we evaluated was able to provide. The team of support personnel at MDI is phenomenal. They respond to questions and requests within minutes in most circumstances. If the request requires research, the follow up is generally less than 24 hours. The reporting function for Meaningful Use is very user friendly, and makes it very easy to track the successful capture of the information required to be Meaningful Use compliant.

Finally, most practices are looking towards preparing for ICD-10. Based on the software's billing/coding format, we are confident that MDI will guide us smoothly into the conversion to ICD-10, which we feel would be a very daunting task without an EMR system like MDI. It truly is knowledge-driven, and I would recommend ophthalmology practices give this software serious consideration before choosing the EMR to take them into the future.

Retina Care Center looked for the best and most appropriate EMR for our practice for over three years. We experienced many demos. We are a two doctor practice, soon to have three doctors. We have three sites between Oregon and California.

We are an extremely efficient practice, however, were interested in improving legibility of the patient chart as well of accuracy of injectables. We have been on a typical paper chart system for the thirteen years. We used spreadsheets for injectables and inventory of all medications.

We purchased IntelleChart in May of 2013 and began the implementation timeline with accessing MDI University, webinars, a site visit, and an in house trainer to oversee paper chart entry into the MDI system. Through doing this, the staff became proficient prior to the MDI On Site Trainer arriving for GO LIVE week.

The implementation could not have gone better. Shelley, the MDI trainer, was extremely knowledgable. The staff and doctors all found her very easy with which to work. We use AllScripts for our Practice Management System and I was concerned about the HL7 interface working effectively; it has worked great.

IntelleChart is intuitive and easy to learn. Our staff learned the system fairly quickly and we are definitely still on the learning curve. We can't wait to learn everything we can do with the system.

The company support of MDI is beyond magnificient.

The greatest benefit we have received after one week of being on the system is the efficiency gained with the exam summary/letter being faxed by e-fax immediately, and our physicians not having to face dictation at the end of each day.

I would be glad to be a resource for references, specifically practices who use AllScripts and MDI. Thank you again for having such an awesome team!

MDI is quite simply an outstanding EHR for Ophthalmology. Designed by an Ophthalmologist, MDI functions through the history, exam, testing, procedures, and disposition in the manner we as ophthalmologists are used to working. The program documents everything efficiently and easily. One of the best parts of the program is the customer service. I can't imagine a group of friendlier, more knowledgeable professionals. The few issues we have had are handled quickly. We previously had another EHR product which we abandoned because of poor performance and even worse customer service. MDI is the exact opposite of our initial experience. The implementation was simple. We were back to seeing our full load of patients within 1 week. Even our most computer phobic staff found MDI easy to use. MDI also interfaces great with our EPM system. We are now much more efficient as charges are pushed from MDI into our EPM system without the staff having to manually enter them. Overall, I can't say enough about MDI. I would recommend this product to any ophthalmologist without any reservations.

We couldn't have asked for a better system. After wading through the quagmire of other programs that were inefficient and obsolete, we thankfully found MDI. MDIntellesys was so easy to learn that we switched from our old EHR to MDI cold turkey and continued seeing patients at capacity. The customer support is US based, with intelligent representatives who know the program and can resolve issues immediately. Thanks for providing an EHR that pleases the doctors, medical staff, and even the billing staff.

We started MDintellesys mid June of 2012. We are a large facility, seeing about 120 patients per day. When we started, we ran half of a schedule the first 2 days and then continued with a full schedule from then on. MDintellesys made it easy because they had good training both onsite and via telephone, and their EMR has an intuitive nature.

MDI has been developed by an ophthalmologist which make it unique in that the workflow, drop downs and layout follow the natural path of an eye exam. The goal of MDI has been to minimize the amount of typing that a doctor has to do thereby increasing efficiency and to this end, each release seems to make MDI more efficient.

The integration with my PM was almost seemless; any small problems that did arise were usually due to my PM. Likewise, integration with equipment was very easy and MDI was able to have a solution for all of my equipment.

The technical report is fantastic. It is rare that I call during business hours and not get a live person(and all tech support U.S based). Even after hours, if you have to leave a message at tech suport, a return phone call can be expected usually within 20 minutes.

MDI is also very receptive to input from their clients and utilize that input to improve their product.

We have been using MDIntelleSys for approximately five months now. We are a busy, retina only, practice that was using paper charts exclusively. We had been looking for appropriate software for approximately ten years before coming across MDI. While the decision to change to EMR was difficult, the transition has been quite smooth and very successful. The conversion to electronic records was quick and within approximately one week we were seeing our normal, full load of patients with records done entirely electronically. The data entry is intuitive and fairly easy to use. The "default" settings work well for most patients and while we anticipate slowly refining these to our practice specific indications it has not been necessary to change much in the system.

The efficiencies gained with the new software allow us to finish our work several hours earlier than with paper charts, have eliminated the need for transcriptionists, and streamlined our billing process. We have already reduced our staff by 2 FTE's and expect to be able to reduce our ancillary staff further in the coming months saving a substantial amount of overhead.

I am the IT person/MR clerk for an ophthalmic/optometric practice with six offices in NW Pennsylvania and SW New York. We were in need of an EMR program, as our EPM wasn't adequate and needed updating. It was bulky and server based, which caused issues in and of itself.

We went live with MDI back in September and have been gradually integrating it into every day use. One of our practitioners uses it exclusively and loves it. The implementation and training was extremely valuable; it's very easy to use. The on-site training our doctors received was invaluable. Customer support has been great. I've not had an issue that wasn't addressed in a very timely manner since our GO Live. Overall, I am very pleased with the system.

I am a solo retina specialist in New York and a very enthusiastic MDI EMR user. I was very apprehensive about adopting EMR and went through a very detailed process vetting various ophthalmic EMR. At the conclusion of my painstaking process the winner was MDI.

However, I remained skeptical about the implementation until it actually went on beautifully. I am a demanding customer (in New York it is par for the course) and needless to say, the MDI team was amazingly responsive to all my requests and concerns. We hit the ground running and never looked back. MDI EMR made my practice a lot more efficient and streamlined. In addition, it even improved my quality of life outside the office and I no longer need to spend time on dictating reports.

Making the decision to choose an EMR program is not an easy task. Thankfully MDIntelleSys takes all the guess work out of the process.

Not general ophthalmology no problem this program has all the tools to help the most complicated practice record data with their patient encounters.

We are a west coast practice and there has not been a time late in the day that we were unable to get assistance from MDI. They keep extended hours of operation to help everyone coast to coast.

For the PM side of the business we are using athena. MDI and athena have a long standing relationship that goes back years. Our data between the two programs moves seamlessly and at lighting speed. Once we data enter a patient in athena they are right there in MDI.

Hands down choosing MDI for our EMR needs was a good decision for our practice.

When our organization decided it was time to get ready for EMR we looked at about 6 software programs, we even went to 2 different practice's to evaluate a couple of them. When we saw MDI's we knew it was the perfect one for us.

The initial set up was very easy, MDI handled everything, there was very little to do on the organization side. It's user friendly for all of our staff to use between our 2 locations. The service we get from MDI is amazing. As soon as you call they help you right away, we rarely ever have to get a call back, if we do have to they always call the same day. When you email the help desk a work ticket they update them so you always know whats going on with it. All of the employees at MDI are very smart with the software, and each time we call they are all so friendly.

MDI has worked great for all our practice needs, and we are very happy we picked them over all the other software programs we looked at.

We are a multi-specialty Ophthalmology practice located in Massachusetts. I spent years researching different electronic health record systems along with one of our senior technicians, and the support of our I.T. person.

We decided a web-based EMR would work best for us, as our cloud-based practice management system had saved us a great deal in I.T. related costs and provided us with immediate system updates. It also allowed our doctors to access patient information outside the office, which to them, was very helpful. Of all the web/cloud-based systems out there, the staff and doctors at the MDI booths truly knew their product best. They answered all of my many questions on the spot and/or via email prior to me even leaving the conference. They even had an actual MD giving the demo! That I had never seen before.

We purchased IntelleChart last January and went "live" in June. We could have gone "live" sooner but were waiting on our PM system to finish their portion of the HL7 bridge. I also wanted to be sure our technicians had enough chart prepping practice before we brought it into clinic. Our "go-live" went more smoothly than I ever could have imagined. I'd heard so many nightmarish stories about "EMR go-live days" and in the end, we couldn't have been more prepared for ours. The MDI University, knowledgebase conference calls, incredible I.T. walk-thru and set up, made us unbelievably prepared for it. MDI suggested we cut back on the number of patients we were seeing during our "go-live" training and it worked out perfectly.

Of the first four doctors who went "live" in June, three of them were seeing ALL patients on MDI within 2-3 weeks. I have only a few doctors who are still seeing some patients on paper and only because they are extremely part-time here, and therefore are taking a little longer to become more comfortable with and efficient on the system. If the technicians had it their way, everyone would be seen on MDI. To this day, we have not reduced the number of patients per session, and certainly won't need to at this point in time.

There are many things I could say about IntelleChart and MDI as a company but the most important thing everyone should know about them, is that their customer support is top notch! Other practices on various EMR systems have called me, and when I mention that, they ask if the support is just as good six months down the road. Well, it is! I ask for a new "document type" to be added for example, and most of the time, it's already there in less than an hour. I'm the Administrator and even I can help the technicians populate data from previous exams when we're running behind. The system is so user-friendly; I honestly think it's helpful learning tool for new technicians, as it almost prompts you to ask the appropriate necessary questions.

The owner of our practice allowed me to select our EMR system, which meant the pressure was all on me! He could not be happier with it and I can't tell you how pleased I am about that!
