McKesson Practice Choice is a complete solution that includes electronic health record (EHR), medical billing and patient scheduling. This web-based system features an attractive, user-friendly interface and provides busy medical offices anytime, anywhere access. It's really well suited for small to mid-sized practices with less than 10 physicians in a number of primary care specialties.

McKesson Practice Choice is ONC-ATCB certified for meaningful use and includes built-in Critical Quality Measures that let providers review their practice to ensure the office is meeting the right requirements. Smart Note Technology is also built into the system, giving physicians the ability to complete a progress note and then fill in the remaining sections automatically, all from a single screen.

Physicians and office staff use simple button navigation to move through all areas of the software, from clinical documents to patient schedules to billing. This ensures that patients move smoothly through their visits and their updated records can be accessed at anytime throughout the appointment. There's also the ability to connect to health information exchanges (HIEs) to improve collaboration even further.

Ease-of-use

There is a learning curve that one must go through in order to be comfortable with the program. The McKesson rep that assisted me before I went live was very patient. She was accessible to me even when we didn't have a session scheduled. She was a great instructor.

Functionality

I wish that certain aspects of the product (e.g. - patient records, schedule) were accessible on a tablet or a mobile device.

Product Quality

The program is wonderful because it incorporates the different aspects of a practice: the schedule, accounts receivable, and the EMR.

Customer Support

There is no support through the VAR after business hours or on the weekend. I have had to call McKesson when the VAR was closed, and the McKesson support staff was happy to assist me.

Likes Best

I like the accessibility. I am able to access patient records and my schedule from anywhere.

Likes Least

I dislike that I have to go through a VAR instead of dealing with McKesson personally.

Recommendations

Look seriously at this program. McKesson seems committed to improving the program. There is an update almost every month that helps to improve the program.

I was hoping the product would remain simplistic in nature, as we are a one-physician office and hold paper charts, but I am a lone wolf.

If feasible, visit an office using the product or sit in on a webinar showing its usability.

We are a small Internal Medicine practice with one doctor. We have been using Practice Choice for a year now and have loved it. It is very easy to use and very customizable to our practice. The implementation was very personal and tailored to our office workflow. Our implementation specialist worked with us to make sure that we understood how to use the system and all the ways that we could customize the notes to meet our needs.

I have really loved the customer support from the McKesson team. They are always so pleasant to speak with and work to resolve any issues or questions we might have right away. They also really listen to what practices say and take our input to heart, trying to better the system all the time with the monthly updates.

The staff at McKesson has made the transition to a new system painless and easy. Our office workflow is also streamlined and we are able to manage our patients betters. Having an integrated system has meant having all the information at the tip of our fingers when a patient calls or comes in. We are able to offer a higher quality of care because we are not having to spend time flipping through paper charts to find past labs, radiology, or immunization records. I can't say enough about the system and the customer support. I would highly recommend this system to anyone looking to get an EHR!

We have been using this cloud based product, along with Relay Healty (prescribing module), for 2 months and find its not as reliable as it states. It has the ability to be a great product, but Practice Choice and Relay Health are busy pointing the finger at who's fault it is that your notes were lost, or your system went down, or you are unable to get refill requests through the online system.

Patients will not tolerate this "sorry, our system is down routine" on an hourly basis! When we complain about how often we encounter errors and get knocked out of Practice Choice, we are reminded of how unsteady the Internet can be and it's just something you have to "adapt" to when working with cloud based products. When I connect to Lytec, for billing or adding new patients, I use the Internet to connect to my server. But I'm not constantly being kicked off the server because of the instability of the Internet. We are a family practice office, with two locations, and I have used Lytec (also a McKesson product) for 15 years. Practice Choice is the EHR module that is to "talk" to Lytec. As of today, it is sharing very little information!

Implementation has been difficult! Instead of a team of people stating "before you go live let's clean up your Lytec junk and move forward", they go live and just let the problems begin. I have to go through our VARS in order to talk with anyone at McKesson to voice a concern. Their customer service is not always professional. I pray daily I have not made a mistake going with this product.
