The Valant Behavioral Health EHR


 

Valant’s EHR for behavioral health offers tools for providers to streamline documentation, increase efficiency, and enhance the productivity of their practice or agency.

The fully integrated suite includes secure patient records, documentation, scheduling, practice management, and a patient portal. Because Valant focuses exclusively on behavioral health, users don’t have to navigate through billing codes and documentation templates made for other specialties.

Valant offers a library of outcome measures for clinicians to utilize and track overtime. Patients may complete these assessments from the comfort of their own home via the Patient Portal, or in session with the clinician. Either way, results are documented in clinical notes and securely stored in patient records.

Documentation templates include click-to-narrative technology to reduce typing and simplify the creation of a structured note. Because the software is completely integrated, information like diagnosis and medication is pulled directly into the note from the patient chart.

The practice management suite allows users to generate charges directly from the calendar, eliminating manual data entry. The extensive reporting feature allows users to manage all aspects of the revenue cycle as well as other clinical and appointment reports. Patients are able to view their balances and receive statements electronically in their patient portal.

Hi I got the system in 2015

and for 8 months paid $$$/month and was not able to have them register me and could not use the software at all.I never got my money back
No one is ever answering the phone on the northeast time because they are sleeping in California whe we are up working.

I found training "on-line" very difficult. I think I would have been much happier and gotten off to a better start had I trained in person at a near by clinic that uses Valant already. Very happy with the help available on line, however.

Mental health specific, many features, ease of using online help and great customer service/response time

Cons

Report options do not include what I need to create payroll for my therapists, our practice does not use any of the features except billing - which is unfortunate as I would have been happier to use the scheduler and some other features

If you are looking for a very specific mental health EMR this is the one you should look at. The entire EMR is dedicated to mental health. One of the best features is the customer service department is located in the United States, there is no delay in getting help and communication are able to be done.

Valant is simply the best product for the price. We have tried other EHR's and by far Valant offers the best package of services.

Pros

We have found very little that we do not like about Valant.

Cons

If there was anything to improve it would be the treatment plan. It is still a better treatment plan than the majority of EHR's but there are a few small things that could make it outstanding.

Advice to Others

Valant is the best product on the market. Customer service is outstanding.

The folks from Valent came out and did a demo on site for us and were very knowledgeable about their system

True Cloud technology, and the ability to make instantaneous changes

Cons

we are a Behavioral Health agency with both inpatient and outpatient services and Valent doesn't have a working inpatient module yet.
Slow startup time to get up and running

Valant provides easy to use formats for case notes and link diagnosis codes to the ICD-10. These features are essential to being efficient with paperwork and billing.

They have serious issues with regard to patient safety. Cannot run a simple report to track active patients with no appointment on file. They charge per page to fax and cannot be too many pages or it crashes. They use Microsoft Silverlight, therefore, not customizable!!! I can go on and on!

It is accessible online.

Cons

Not customizable!!!! Patient safety is an issue. Expensive, yes, they do have customer service but their favorite words are, "no we can't do that. Don't you understand that there are millions of lines of programming that can't be changed".

What I think about Valant

First off, their customer support is top notch and is very responsive. There are never any wait times, and they always seem to have the answer. The software is extremely easy to use and didn't take me long to learn at all. However, it is a bit more pricey than others out there. Most of my colleagues use Simple Practice, while I use Valant. Valant I feel has a more professional look to it and is more powerful in a sense of the reports that it can generate. It has the ability to have an integrated calendar (which I like) and you can scan documents to client files. They also have pre-generated templates, when coupled with dragon speaking software, gets my note taking down to 5 minutes per note!

Pros

Can generate multiple reports including insurance aging reports, what income you have generated monthly, etc.
It reminds you when you haven't completed client notes.
It lets you know if you haven't submitted claims for billing
Can integrate billing into the software for 1 click billing of claims
client portal
You can create your own templates
There are measures that you can have clients complete prior to being seen that helps with diagnosing.
Customer support rocks
They're trying to update their software based on customer feedback

Cons

The price. Currently, for my 1 office staff and myself. There are cheaper options out there.
I have a 2 in 1 tablet and laptop touchscreen- sometimes I have to make the font tiny on my screen to fit in all their windows like when adding authorizations. (these times are few and far between though). Also on other PCs, I've had no problem.

Advice to Others

Take the software for a test drive and see how you like it.

Many parts of the EHR are easy to use and learn. Customer support is helpful. The primary reasons I rated the product 2 stars is it is not totally cloud based and to review notes they have to be downloaded to your computer. This is a hassle and needs to be fixed. The second issue is that the treatment plan tool does not have templates to use as presented. There is only the primary template for depression. This was a bit misleading. The training and implementation were good and they were helpful.

Advice to Others

Consider another option if you are looking for ease of use regarding reviewing notes and documents. It is a real pain.

Take the good with the bad

There are many things I like about Valant, such as the overall look and navigation. However, after having used it for 5 years, I have found some chronic problems. The most impactful issue is that sometimes our appointments "undo" themselves. Either they were entered in and then disappear or they are deleted and reappear. I assume this is related to the syncing from our computers back to their servers. Maybe their servers are too slow, I don't know. The other major issue is that the processing of the website is super slow quite often. It gets bogged down and after clicking on a button, it the "spin" for quite a while before either doing something or erroring out. Customer support isn't any help, which is very frustrating. Another issue is the lack of clarifying in their reporting. They have a large number of reports to choose from but very little information on what the report means, what info it is pulling front, and how to interpret it (some of the reports seem very obscure). I don't like that I can add providers but they have a policy against removing them. I don't like that I have to pay a large chunk of money every time I onboard and therapist for the billing set up. These are my biggest complaints. After having demo'd a number of other EMRs over the past month, I am finding other EMRs having some nice functionalities that Valant doesn't offer.

Advice to Others

This would probably be a decent option for smaller clinics who have just a couple clinicians. I am finding it inadequate the larger and more sophisticated our practice gets.

The training for this EHR is personal and outstanding. It is fairly easy to use.

Pros

Easy to use and great, personalized, thorough training.

Cons

My only dislikes are how the system reflects patients payments (it is confusing for patients when looking at their statements) and how you don't get feedback on claim rejection unless you log on to the third party payor website and check for rejections. They could also charge less, considering you need a third party billing, who also charges for their services.

I have been using Valant EHR for Behavioral health for approximately 11 months now. I struggled with this company at first as is typical in my experience with the sales staff wanting to hurry up and close the sale. I was left with a few questions hanging.

I use an ipad, iphone and Macbook pro. As you can see, I am exclusively and apple user. This made the difference for me. There was one EHR that really had most of what I wanted, minus the apple support. It was PIMSY. I have probably tried 20 EHR types, ranging from FREE to paid. This one iis monthly for one provider. I do not like the fact that they want to charge monthly for a login for my assiantant. Again I am a solo practitioner, so every little bit does count.

I DO like the fact that an intake/Psychiatrist Diagnostic Evaluation is already preloaded with screeners, automatic scoring and auto generated reports that you can modify!!

I do NOT like their Treatment Plan Template. Definitely something that they need to work on. HOWEVER, they seem to be making changes based upon the feedback that I and others have left. So that is good to know.

Pros

I absolutely appreciate the intake information is so well implemented. I can capture just about everything with minimal typing. I also appreciate the fact that there are so many screening tools that AUTOMATICALLY give the results. I can customize those results as well. Very good job on this part!

Cons

I really do not like the Treatment Plan Template. It is not intuitive or very well prepopulated for convenience. It seems to take longer than hand writing one. HOWEVER there was a recent update that has addresses some of my concernes. I have not had much of an opportunity to check this out.

I do not like the fact that it is so difficult to upload documents if you are using a mobile device such as an ipad/iphone. A photo screen capture would be great!

Advice to Others

If you are wanting a behavioral health EHR, for apple products, then so far, this is the best that I can recommend. After all of my trials that I have been through in finally finding one that suites my purposes, I would advise you to identify the 5 most important things for an EHR. If the model that you try does not meet those expectations, then move on. I had wasted 2 years to finally rest with Valant. There is no perfect EHR suite, but this one does do a good job.

Simple to use, and easy to learn and very user friendly . It is intuitive and easy for our counselors to use. Easy to use scheduler, organization of patient charts and history is outstanding.
