Microsoft Project Software

Microsoft Project is a comprehensive project management solution designed for enterprises of all sizes. It features project scheduling, which allows project managers to define project tasks, assign them to the team and track in-progress assignments.

Microsoft Project also features project budgeting, which helps managers estimate the costs for the entire span of a project. Managers can also perform “Earned Value Analytics” and estimate the cost performance of their projects.

With interactive dashboards and reporting functionalities, the project managers can also prepare insightful reports and make decisions about project execution and staffing levels.

Microsoft Project can be deployed both on-premise and in the cloud. The Web-based version allows project managers to collaborate with their team remotely using smartphones and mobile devices.

I've been using MS Project on and off for around 8 years now and I still wish our company took the Primavera route many years ago as it seems more and more State or Municipal agencies are requiring the use of Primavera over Project. Don't get me wrong, Project is an amazing product with extensive features and ability to tie into other software programs as well. The Project 2016 version that's been out for a while now is much more user friendly and the "findability" of certain items has become much easier.

Advice to Others

If you've been using Project from the get go then stick with it. But if you're a contractor, like myself, then look ahead and see what the awarding agencies are requiring these days.

As I stated in my title, this is the de facto project management tool that every project manager should be familiar with. If you use any Microsoft product, you will be right at home navigating through the application. The features are rich and clearly defined. From scheduling to tracking to change management, all the necessary functions to complete your daily project managing tasks are here. In fact, all other PM software use Microsoft project as benchmark, isn't that enough?

Pros

Everything

Cons

For beginners, the rich feature sets can be overwhelming

Advice to Others

start with the basic scheduling and resource management, then explore all the other stuff on top of what you have.

I think that MS Project sets the standard in Project Management Software. The latest version is much more user friendly, and the Gannt Chart is very helpful in providing a graphical view of the resource load.

Likes Least

MS Project is not as easy to master as some of the competition's products.

Recommendations

Don't put so much emphasis on the price point, as that was one of my considerations that took me away from MS Project.

This product like most of the Microsoft products is very easy to use.
Easily create and manage a projects schedule through this software. not only manage activities but it also allows you to manage your man power. The more detail you give the program the more information you can track.

Easily dump the information right from your bid in HCSS Heavy Bid to the program.

Easy to manage, update and add new activities or break down current ones. There is also the ability for critical path items and milestone markers. I quickly change my view from project whole, year, month and week views for added detail on the gant chart.

Microsoft Project delivers with respect to managing project tasks and timelines. I like having the ability to drive my timeline using durations and actual finish dates, and to have my timeline update automatically. I also like the interface with Active Directory so that I can pull resources from our company list.

Likes Least

Aside from the basic task/timeline features, other features are a bit clunky compared to other project management solutions. I find the Network Diagram view to be finicky, and printing any view is a challenge. To fully utilize the software, one requires advanced training. Managing multiple projects is also a challenge with MSP.

Recommendations

There are a myriad of project management solutions in the marketplace that are significantly more intuitive and provide advanced functionality (such as collaboration, portfolio management, executive dashboards, reporting and business intelligence, etc.). The core MSP functionality is embedded in most of these newer tools. I highly recommend looking at PPM solutions that offer the additional functionality.

I like the fact that this is not a complex program to use. It is very similar to using Excel. Very Easy to learn. Within 30 minutes of playing with it i created a schedule that works. There are many you tube videos and documents to help further learn this program.

I'm in construction and this tool is great for scheduling.

This is not a critical path method scheduling software. However, it does identify the critical path. Thus, I do no think it is needed more than the default functionality of the program.

Recommendations

Check if you absolutely need a critical path method software. This software does not have that functionality. Besides that, I think this an amazing tool for scheduling, cost analysis based on time, resources analysis, and more.

One of the reasons I really liked this product was because it was similar to the rest of the Microsoft office product layout, therefore it made it easier to navigate. With the new updates I really like the collaboration portion of it.
As this software has been in the market for a long time, there are a plenty of the forums for help through Microsoft and other sources.

I can't think of any major issues but I'd like to see a mobile platform of the microsoft project, where we can track the schedule real time on site with a front end mobile application. As we are a small firm, Microsoft project was an overkill. We migrated over to a cloud based PM software as it is easier to use.

Recommendations

When evaluating you really need to think about the size of the firm.

It's Microsoft, so their products are all similar in some way. Also helpful when you have a contract with them. I like that all Office products can be integrated and they communicate well... for the most part.

Likes Least

How much "digging" is required to complete simple tasks. I find myself searching through the menus most often when I'm trying to manage resources on a project and configure their access and control. Also its a Big Brother company, so its not necessarily easy to get the help you need.

Recommendations

Be patient, and if you're going to learn the software, become intimate with it. You'll find yourself frustrated if you try and use this product once a month for a complex project. I think this is a powerful tool if used properly. There might be more visually appealing products out there, but as far as integration with other Office products, this is a good product for that. Lastly, use Google as your tech support. You'll get more answers from them than you would by calling Microsoft.

Microsoft Project is a great tool to use for keeping an accurate schedule of any type of project. The product can be used
to manage projects within any industry whether IT, Finance, Aerospace, Food services etc.

The Microsoft Vendor is well known in the software industry, been around and has established a name for
itself.

Likes Least

There is definitely a required learning curve for Microsoft Project. Since there are so many different features,
it's best to play around with the tool in order to gain exposure to the various pieces. Least favorite feature include incompatibility issues. Sometimes version mismatch can be a problem when different sites have incompatible versions of the product.

Recommendations

I recommend that you try it out any products before purchasing. Utilize any demos or training segments. Create examples to see how the tool actually behaves.
