Microsoft Project is a very easy-to-use scheduling program while keeping a ton of features! As a student who has been taught both P6 and Project, there is no doubt that Microsoft Project is the better software. Much easier to navigate without sacrificing too many features.

Microsoft Project for the Consultant

Ease-of-use

Value for Money

Microsoft Project has a lot of really great features provided you purchase the correct version for your needs otherwise, just like any other software, it will not perform to your expected satisfaction.

Pros

Lots of different views for the same data input. Allows for individuals to have different time schedules built in and different cost centers and rates to pull from across multiple assets. Most of our clients use this software and allows for easy transfer of schedules.

Cons

Because there are so many features the learn, it can be daunting to learn how everything fits together. Although this is an early Con, in the long term, the functionality is worth the perseverance.

When you need a professional looking schedule but simple schedules MS Project is perfect. It allows the use of schedule logic, calendars, and constraints, but does not require all of the horse power of some of the other scheduling software on the market.

Pros

Simple to use and allows for straight-forward schedule logic. Great for preliminary, proposal, or owner's schedules.

Cons

Would have to switch to Primavera or similar once you need the scheduling horsepower.

Pros

Much easier than before to learn. I was able to put together a project from start to finish and make changes along the way, looking for help only a few times.

Cons

It would be better if views were easier to access. Still not easy to find the correct help video.

Pros

MS Project really is the way to logically think about the tasks ahead of you and how best to plan an approach to scheduling.

Drag & drop management allows you to brain storm and rejig your team thoughts into a progression that suits whatever project you are planing. Being easy to visualise the steps to completion enables clear communication to the team and ensures implementation is fluid.

Delays or pushbacks will immediately highlight any resource conflicts or shortages giving you time to recruit or come up with an alternative option.

Cons

Not the easiest software to get used to but once you start with small steps the rest will follow. Despite being a long time user I have yet to find the limits of the program so I have a whole lot more left to discover.

Pros

I will say that there are an abbundance of features to do whatever you would like to do, can accomplish your end goal...eventually

Cons

Forces the user to adopt an illogical approach, in my opinion, toward as scheduling, dependencies, deliverables, etc. I feel that the software can be overhauled to adopt a better, more conducive, modern, efficient approach to the scheduling.

I've been using MS Project on and off for around 8 years now and I still wish our company took the Primavera route many years ago as it seems more and more State or Municipal agencies are requiring the use of Primavera over Project. Don't get me wrong, Project is an amazing product with extensive features and ability to tie into other software programs as well. The Project 2016 version that's been out for a while now is much more user friendly and the "findability" of certain items has become much easier.

Advice to Others

If you've been using Project from the get go then stick with it. But if you're a contractor, like myself, then look ahead and see what the awarding agencies are requiring these days.

Value for Money

As I stated in my title, this is the de facto project management tool that every project manager should be familiar with. If you use any Microsoft product, you will be right at home navigating through the application. The features are rich and clearly defined. From scheduling to tracking to change management, all the necessary functions to complete your daily project managing tasks are here. In fact, all other PM software use Microsoft project as benchmark, isn't that enough?

Pros

Everything

Cons

For beginners, the rich feature sets can be overwhelming

Advice to Others

start with the basic scheduling and resource management, then explore all the other stuff on top of what you have.

I think that MS Project sets the standard in Project Management Software. The latest version is much more user friendly, and the Gannt Chart is very helpful in providing a graphical view of the resource load.

Likes Least

MS Project is not as easy to master as some of the competition's products.

Recommendations

Don't put so much emphasis on the price point, as that was one of my considerations that took me away from MS Project.

This product like most of the Microsoft products is very easy to use.
Easily create and manage a projects schedule through this software. not only manage activities but it also allows you to manage your man power. The more detail you give the program the more information you can track.

Easily dump the information right from your bid in HCSS Heavy Bid to the program.

Likes Least

Microsoft project can some time have issues with linked items. When a link is removed from the activities the program at times likes to maintain this link until a new one is created.

Easy to manage, update and add new activities or break down current ones. There is also the ability for critical path items and milestone markers. I quickly change my view from project whole, year, month and week views for added detail on the gant chart.

Microsoft Project delivers with respect to managing project tasks and timelines. I like having the ability to drive my timeline using durations and actual finish dates, and to have my timeline update automatically. I also like the interface with Active Directory so that I can pull resources from our company list.

Likes Least

Aside from the basic task/timeline features, other features are a bit clunky compared to other project management solutions. I find the Network Diagram view to be finicky, and printing any view is a challenge. To fully utilize the software, one requires advanced training. Managing multiple projects is also a challenge with MSP.

Recommendations

There are a myriad of project management solutions in the marketplace that are significantly more intuitive and provide advanced functionality (such as collaboration, portfolio management, executive dashboards, reporting and business intelligence, etc.). The core MSP functionality is embedded in most of these newer tools. I highly recommend looking at PPM solutions that offer the additional functionality.

I like the fact that this is not a complex program to use. It is very similar to using Excel. Very Easy to learn. Within 30 minutes of playing with it i created a schedule that works. There are many you tube videos and documents to help further learn this program.

I'm in construction and this tool is great for scheduling.

Likes Least

The pricing is always an issue. This is not for comparing cost or critical paths.

Recommendations

If you need a quick simple tool. This is the one. Not for complex scheduling or evaluating job cost.

I have used Microsoft Project for years across several companies. While it does the jobs there are many other platforms available that do it a bit better.

Project is solid and a good way to learn about project management.

Pros

Good value for the money, many other platforms cost a lot more per user.

Cons

Seems difficult to learn compared to other available tools. Missing the automatic emails and notifications of other online project management apps.
