PDF printing formats are not optimal. I find myself working to get large schedules so they are legible.
Visual Aesthetics used in Project presentations is somewhat Limited I'd like to see more bells and whistles in this area.

Pros

Microsoft Project is very easy to maneuver and easy to teach basic scheduling principles. It is very Universal among our clients. I utilize a lot of the shortcut that you have provided within the software as it is developed over the years. I also appreciate the multiple Gantt chart colors that are available. It is very easy to Import and Export tasks out of excel formats. I have found many aftermarket tutorials on Microsoft Project.

Cons

Some of the advanced options are complex and cumbersome an example is resource leveling. Formatting the header to accommodate various icons or logos is not easy.

It is not easy to jump from task to task.

Integrates well with more advanced PM software. Links with other Office products seamlessly. Fairly easy to navigate once all the icons are learned.

Cons

The cost is higher than most PM software. Other less expensive programs are just as capable. Had some trouble reaching any kind of live support. Links to support groups which didn't help much.

MS Project seems to be geared toward traditional project management styles. Great way to manage large complex projects that you need to check off tasks. On projects with constant change it is not as accomidating.

Pros

Product does integrate with Sharepoint and can share with other staff that do not have Project. Can be used by large teams on waterfall type projects

Cons

Expensive license cost, not cloud based. Hard to share with vendors. Not the best product for agile projects or with progressive elaboration projects.

The base set of knowledge I needed to know about Project to have it be useful for the SBS projects I was performing made it almost unusable because of the learning curve necessary.

Ease-of-use

Functionality

Customer Support

Value for Money

Good software, understand the horsepower I can get out of the back end BUT the hurdles are high.

Pros

Everything you would want it to do from a PM perspective it would do. Unfortunately most of the complicated PM tasks tend to be more suited for the Enterprise space rather than the Small business space.

Cons

Very complicated/sophisticated piece of software. in order to get all the *magic* of project you have to set it all up correctly. In order to set it up *correctly* you just have to have a base set of knowledge that is beyond what most of my customers are willing to pay for. This then turns a software purchase decision into a software purchase + training + frequency of use (retention) decision. For small business project often times the notepad and meeting method usually wins out over the select of MS Project.

Microsoft Project, Good tool for an average budget

For the cost per licence and the ease of use, Microsoft Project is my go to tool for Project Management Software.

Pros

Most business have some form of Microsoft Suite, Project doesn't come in the standard suite but so adding additional licenses for Project is more cost effective than most Project Management Software. Because it is a Microsoft product, the user interface is like most Microsoft products, so learning how to navigate around Project doesn't take a lot of time. There is so much to this tool. You can do small and/or large project on it. The capabilities that it has are endless, you really can do a lot with this tool.

Cons

It can be a complex tool, when I first began using Project I had a manager working with me on the Project and helped me get used to Microsoft Project. She had been using it for years, so she had a wealth of knowledge that she shared with me. Without her help, I do think it would have taken me a lot longer to get used to it and be able to use it to its full ability. That being said, the tool can do so much more than I ever thought it could.

Labor rates and time can be calculated.
The auto timing gives fast work.

Microsoft Project has a lot of really great features provided you purchase the correct version for your needs otherwise, just like any other software, it will not perform to your expected satisfaction.

Pros

Lots of different views for the same data input. Allows for individuals to have different time schedules built in and different cost centers and rates to pull from across multiple assets. Most of our clients use this software and allows for easy transfer of schedules.

Cons

Because there are so many features the learn, it can be daunting to learn how everything fits together. Although this is an early Con, in the long term, the functionality is worth the perseverance.

When you need a professional looking schedule but simple schedules MS Project is perfect. It allows the use of schedule logic, calendars, and constraints, but does not require all of the horse power of some of the other scheduling software on the market.

Pros

Cons

Would have to switch to Primavera or similar once you need the scheduling horsepower.

Pros

MS Project really is the way to logically think about the tasks ahead of you and how best to plan an approach to scheduling.

Drag & drop management allows you to brain storm and rejig your team thoughts into a progression that suits whatever project you are planing. Being easy to visualise the steps to completion enables clear communication to the team and ensures implementation is fluid.

Delays or pushbacks will immediately highlight any resource conflicts or shortages giving you time to recruit or come up with an alternative option.

Cons

Not the easiest software to get used to but once you start with small steps the rest will follow. Despite being a long time user I have yet to find the limits of the program so I have a whole lot more left to discover.

I've been using MS Project on and off for around 8 years now and I still wish our company took the Primavera route many years ago as it seems more and more State or Municipal agencies are requiring the use of Primavera over Project. Don't get me wrong, Project is an amazing product with extensive features and ability to tie into other software programs as well. The Project 2016 version that's been out for a while now is much more user friendly and the "findability" of certain items has become much easier.

Advice to Others

If you've been using Project from the get go then stick with it. But if you're a contractor, like myself, then look ahead and see what the awarding agencies are requiring these days.

As I stated in my title, this is the de facto project management tool that every project manager should be familiar with. If you use any Microsoft product, you will be right at home navigating through the application. The features are rich and clearly defined. From scheduling to tracking to change management, all the necessary functions to complete your daily project managing tasks are here. In fact, all other PM software use Microsoft project as benchmark, isn't that enough?

Pros

Everything

Cons

For beginners, the rich feature sets can be overwhelming

Advice to Others

start with the basic scheduling and resource management, then explore all the other stuff on top of what you have.

I find this to be one of the best services. It offers some of the best high quality elements that are available and you can use this for almost anything, work or home related. It helps to keep the problems that arise in business to a minimum. I would recommend this to anyone who needs the best for both work and in home jobs that you need to complete a task rather quickly.

Cons

I only dislike that sometimes the program will crash. The bug seems to cause some of your work to be missing... but that is only every once in awhile. It rarely happens, but when it does it can become frustrating. but you can be assured that most of the time all of your unsaved work is still their within the program and is able to be recovered.

I have reviewed and evaluated dozens of project management software and keep coming back to MS Project. It is easy to use and has useful features. Many of the others had bells and whistles that were nice, in theory, but really were not all that useful.
I like being able to click on the task bar and have the task highlight. This is very useful for detailed projects. Also by hovering the mouse over the task name, the whole name will bubble up. Not all programs do this.

Cons

The sort feature is a little odd in that it offers to sort by fields that may not be used. It would be clearer if it sorted only by those being used.

Microsoft Project is one of those tools that every project manager must learn to use. It has a lot of great features for the beginner to the expert in project management. I use it to plan project activities, assign resources and detect when they are overcharged and if you use a baseline you can get control of project deviations. You can find a lot of functionalities that can grow as your needs of project management and knowledge of the tool evolve. There are a lot of good content about how to use it properly.

Excellent Resource Management.
Project plan creation.
Ability to derive cost and effort of a project.

Pros

Hierarchical view of tasks, sub-tasks with efforts & resource allocation.
A detailed tabular view via the Gantt chart view .
A task distribution on a calendar view with pictorial representation of tasks via the team planner view.
Ability to assign same task to multiple people and define resource allocation towards each task
Via the network diagram the overall dependencies, flow of tasks can be well understood.
Option to baseline a project to a specific date helps to showcase progress accordingly.

Cons

I recommend that the transition between automatically scheduled and manual schedule can be made more pleasant, sometime this results in a lot of conflicts to be resolved.

Pros

Easy to create schedules and link tasks. Easy to manage the changes with a few clicks. Also you can convert files to PDF and print them or make reviews for customers.
Easy to use. I spent like a month using it until feeling comfortable with all the features.

Cons

Because there are so many features, can be difficult to learn how everything fits together. And maybe the user experience can improve related to the way you change the cells etc.

Pros

I was very satisifed with the ease of use and the quality of the product itself. I will keep on using this tool for the moment.

Cons

Some help and tutorials within the software itself would be really handy so I do not need to google the solutions.
