Slack Software

Slack is a Web-based project collaboration and team interaction tool designed to facilitate communication across organizations. It caters to various industries, including media, research, technology, education, financial services, retail, transport and logistics.

Slack provides public channels for members across organizations to start conversations. Private channels enable interaction within smaller teams, and direct channels help send messages directly to colleagues.

Slack incorporates feeds from social media into the application and blends them with ongoing conversations in various channels. Files such as PDFs, images, documents and spreadsheets can be shared via drag and drop.

Slack archives messages, notifications, files (as well as the contents of files) and projects, all of which can be searched for later. Slack allows users to customize their notifications and reduce their scope. All changes are reflected in the native applications available for iOS and Android.

This is one of the best collaboration products I have used in recent times. After our Global development tem started using this, team communication has improved tremendously. Specially teams working in different time zones, can quickly ask questions and clarify the answers. This reduced lot of email communication and latency in responding.

Pros

Ease of use, how we can share different content with global team

Cons

I can't think of any at this time.

Advice to Others

Try it, you will love it.

It is very user friendly : everybody can easily use the tool for their own needs. I like to be able to do a simple group conversation or a private chanel in which I'll be able to use more features : invite a new member that will have access to historique, send emails that will be posted on the chanel. Be able to edit sent messages is wonderful as well!

Likes Least

The autocomplete when you start typing a word that starts with the same few first letters than a Slack user, this is a little anoying. The search is pretty limited : no facets to help filter the query, no filters, etc.

Recommendations

The software being reviewed must be one we use often enough and deeply enough to be able to give a fait feedback about.

It is very easy to use. You have many possibilities, like edit your message after they've been sent, post images easily, and many integration exist, like google hangouts, and gifs and images bot.

Likes Least

It destroys my productivity by making me too responsive. At least, there is a busy option which disables the notifications.

Recommendations

Use it, but make sure you use the appropriate extensions in it, to keep it as a work tool, and not a distraction tool.

Voice chat is nice.

Up to date on technologie.

Likes Least

No video chat yet.

Search is ok at best.

It needs a last talk column or something aside from Starred to talk with previously started conversation. Maybe tabs for ongoing conversation. I currently use alt+< but it only works ok when you talk to one person. I often talk to a lot of people at the same time and need to ping back some people when they don't reply. I also tried to use the /remind command but it doesn't really fit with my needs. A column for ongoing conversations or tabs would be best for my needs.

Also too much downtime to my taste recently.

Recommendations

You definitively need to setup a couple integrations if you want to see the full potential of Slack.

Slack is replacing Skype for Business since Microsoft doesn't like improvements, while slack keep going.

You create public channel, where anyone can come and talk: Public Team channel, Topics, Announcements, etc
You create private group, where you need to be invited: Internal team, special project, confidential conversation
You can do Direct messages, 1:1, or many, for everyday conversation.

If someone isn't connected in slack, you can still write, and the person will receive the notification. They will come later and answer, and etc. Kind of IM + Email in the same platform.

Sync accross all devices, keep you conversation going

Persistent chat, nothing is lost

Likes Least

Mac/Windows app are full of bugs. Working in a browser isn't natural for everyone.

Recommendations

We tried many communication platform, and slack is the way to go. Lot of integration, lot of adoptions.

BUT! Make sure to have cops watching (moderators) because it's very easy to screw around an important conversations, and loose the momentum.

Slack is the main communication tool used in our office - and it is far more than just a messaging system. For starters it has a great interface and is extremely simple to use. You can coordinate with one individual or as many as you'd like. We have multiple channels private for internal teams. It is highly customizable and has SO many other features. I'm a big fan of the "Do Not Disturb" mode and the manual reminders you can set for yourself or other team members.

Likes Least

At times it can be somewhat disruptive/distracting - but that's where the "mute" and "do not disturb" options come into play.

Recommendations

I have used several other office communication tools and this beats them all - by far! I would recommend taking advantage of the free trial & looking into the features that Slack can provide to your business in addition to being a communication tool.

1. Extremely easy to use.
2. Integrates with every single web app out there. For those who like to receive a live feed of Zendesk tickets, for example, it works wonders.
3. Easily connects groups of teams in their own private (or public) channels.
4. Do not disturb mode. I cannot tell you how important this is to your productivity.
5. Everything done in regards to the UI seems intuitive and the whole experience of trying to find something or setting up something just feels instinctive.
6. Highly customizable. Whether it's about customizing welcome messages, making your own emojis or making Slackbot do something for you, whatever it is you want to do with Slack, it just feels like you can.
7. Amazing potential of growth and many untapped features to find. Slack allows you to do so much (integrations, API, other paid features, ...). While other tools focus on being a one-man-show trying to offer everything in one place, Slack offers to be the maestro around whom every other piece of software (task management, project management, CS software, ...) revolves around, making communication paramount again.

Likes Least

It can be overwhelming and incredibly disruptive (in the bad way) in big teams.

Chat conversations should be short and sweet, but there's a general tendency to barrage a channel or a person with questions and extend them way beyond what it should be the normal length for a chat conversation.

Don't enable desktop notifications if your Slack activity is usually high. You won't be able to concentrate.

Recommendations

Use the Don't Disturb mode whenever you need to focus or can't be distracted.
Choose the channels you NEED to be in, otherwise you'll get called into Slack for something that you don't really need to know.

Use it like you would behave in a normal, physical office.

You don't need to poke that person in the back 5 times in 5 minutes asking if the thing is done.
You don't need to shout across the room.
You don't leave your files in a table (channel) that's not yours or that doesn't concern the people who use it.
NOT everything is urgent. Learn to prioritize, delegate and trust people around you.

Slack will be perfect that way.

Once you have everything set up, it is very easy to use and seems to be a great forum for discussion both in your organization and out. The customization is great. And best of all, it is free for the basic use!

Likes Least

Starting a group and joining one are a little difficult. Especially when you have the app on your computer and want to join a group (that you are already apart of on the web version). The process is a bit confusing and requires a lot of running around. I was able to figure it out after some playing around, but this process could definitely be improved--or at least connection between the web and desktop version can be improved.

Recommendations

It is worth trying for free as a trial basis. You have nothing to lose. With not a lot of people in our company and already using gchat constantly, I don't use this in my organization as much as to participate in conversations with partners and industry groups.

I liked the approach of Slack as an online office. It's made our chats with the team so much more effective. It also helps cut distractions. The way it works with my team is that all our communication flows through Slack. Also, a saved message history really helps to recall certain decisions

I like Slack, but I still use Skype for voice calls since they don't have that functionality yet. But I believe they have started beta testing it.

Recommendations

Implement this, you won't regret it. You have no idea how useful is that message history.
