Slack Software

Slack is a web-based project collaboration and team interaction tool designed to facilitate communication across organizations. The solution caters to various industries, including media, research, technology, education, financial services, retail, transport and logistics.

Slack provides public channels for members across organizations to start conversations. Private channels enable interaction within smaller teams, and direct channels help send messages directly to colleagues.

Slack incorporates feeds from social media into the application and blends them with ongoing conversations in various channels. Files such as PDFs, images, documents and spreadsheets can be shared via drag and drop.

Slack archives messages, notifications, files (as well as the contents of files) and projects, all of which can be searched for later. Slack allows users to customize their notifications and reduce their scope. All changes are reflected in the native applications available for iOS and Android.

Pros

Slack is a fantastic tool for building an online community. The different channels allow you to silo ideas, documents, and discussion. The search tool also allows for easy recall of documents or notes.

Cons

The openness of discussion and organization of channels can be overwhelming, especially if you are joining an already established team.

Nothing, I really like it!

Pros

Fun and effective way to share information, create discussions, and engage employees about topics related and unrelated to work.

Cons

I wish there was a database of GIF vs having them randomized! Though it's nice that now you get to choose if you wanna share the randomized one. Pinned posts should float to the top of a channel.
I wish there were preferred "group" messages. It feels like you either have to create a channel or choose the same group of people to start a conversation. A "favorites" feature would be nice for this.

Slack really is the future of communication. Dig into the deeper features. Check out the integrations. You will be a believer soon. :)

Pros

Slack will single handedly make your team more efficient than it has ever been. With Bots, teams, channels and administrative features, it's basically the center of our companies functions .

Cons

Slack can be a time suck. Basically everyone can be reached all the time. But I would have to argue that the alternative is that no one can be reached ever, which is much worse.

Pros

The integrations are awesome, specially with Trello. Slack is consistent and reliable. It makes possible to connect our remote team.
The @mentions, the possibility to create different #Channels and the possibility to mute channels.

Cons

Paid version and free version have huge differences - for example the history tracking. Sometimes we needed to reach older messages but it wasn't possible.

Ease-of-use

Value for Money

Pros

Enjoy the simplicity of Slack's interface and simple ability to search and find what you are looking for. Easy for newcomers to understand.

Cons

It lacks some capabilities that other collaboration tools have but Slack continues to evolve the product regularly.
A really big disappointment is Slack's discrimination against faith-based organizations. Our team partners with other inner-city ministries to work toward the mutual transformation of these impoverished neighborhoods, and Slack will not allow us to use the non-profit version with our partners since we are a ministry. Disappointing but we have also found many other technology companies like Microsoft that provide tools and resources for non-profits regardless of faith.

We implemented slack when we discovered that everyone was using imessages while in office. This often made it appear like people weren't working when they really were (or in the alternative, they weren't working and people thought that they were). Slack has made our workday much more transparent.

Pros

We use slack for all of our interoffice communications. It helps us to cut down our emails, have discussions between groups and set daily reminders for ourselves. Plus it's a little whimsical and fun too!

Cons

I am not certain thats its necessarily a con but, Slack is always improving upon itself which means I am constantly having to install updates.

Slack has really helped our company better communicate across different projects and teams. It can get overwhelming to have too many channels, so it's really important to have a plan for when you create new channels so that they don't get out of control. One area that could be improved is around file management. While you can technically search for any file, sometimes it's still helpful to be able to access files in a hierarchal manner.

I need to monitor multiple team status so they produce expected outcomes timely.
Saving time, that we spend for communication is essential for my team. Slack allowed us to split internal to the team communication w/ external one effectively enough, so the level of 'informational noise' is sufficient now.

Pros

I find multiple team channels beneficial for our environment, where I need to follow own team updates, but also be aware of what's going in another teams. I also liked their Android app that turned out to work stable and reliable enough. When I post a message, being offline, this message gets stored and pushed to the public flow when I get online for the next time.

Cons

In order to make a group call and share screen to the team, you'll need to install desktop app.
At my Windows laptop, this app is not quick to start. In addition, when I share my screen to a group of more than 3 people, some of my audience stop seeing what I am sharing. This is really annoying.

Pros

Slack is designed in a way that combines the various social media and messaging apps we use on a daily basis, providing you the ability to have forum-like discussions with whatsapp's messaging style to enable you to send messages across in a quick and concise manner.

If visual presentations are your thing, you'll be able to do that too by just copy and pasting images or sharing links with automatic previews.

To keep things in check, your threads are kept in the form of a hashtag (think Twitter) which makes it easy to make reference to something.

There are also countless apps and integrations which you can include in your Slack to make it fun to use. Slack is both suitable for work and for casual interactions!

Cons

It doesn't currently support the function to reply to a particular message, which makes it a bit messy sometimes when conversations are going at a quick pace, some of you might feel lost not knowing what your peers might actually be replying to.

If you need a way to communicate quickly with a group, outside of using a telephone, texting, emailing the group, this program is worth the effort. I'm sure if you have time to really learn more about this program and its benefits, you will find more helpful uses.

Pros

We used this program as a means of communication more like a chat format, than to coordinate files or other media. It worked well to resolve issues from one location to another. We were able to share when we have too many volunteers at one location, asking if others needed them. We were able to quickly request supplies at a location that was out, and have someone respond.

Cons

We know it supposedly offered more features, but couldn't figure them out within the time frame of our use. We began using it days before our event and there just wasn't time to figure out other benefits.

In a word: transformative! This software, more than anything else in recent memory has radically transformed the way we do business. I actually rarely need to check my email anymore (really, its a blessing once you learn to let it go). What it allows for us, is instant collaboration for just about anything and the ability to segment that communication to either select teams or anybody who wants to join a relevant channel. Most people thought instant messaging was dead, they just overlooked just how useful it would be in the modern workplace.

Cons

Adoption by our team was slow but that's was more just that the marketing wasn't super clear when we tried to get everyone on board with how amazing Slack would be for us!

Being one of the few on my team that works remotely, Slack makes it easy and enjoyable to feel like part of the office team. I can easily see who is online and available and shoot them files and information or even video call them if I need some facetime for a project.

Pros

The ability to share files and editable posts to a channel (more than one person) or a team member is great, but the ability to search them is even greater! I love the playfulness of Slack, too-- from the use of emoji and GIFs, it can make the day a little brighter. Working remotely, it's also so easy to get online and see who's in the office and let others know you're busy or available to chat. I'm really loving the addition of the video call as well, so much easier than emailing someone a video link to join you on another platform and a million times better than Lync.

Pros

The fast and fluid communication is clutch to keep my team working together and moving forward. The ability to jump on, connect, and get an answer without hassling with multiple emails is priceless.

Cons

The division of teams and logins is crippling when trying to get people into the service. Why not one single login linked to multiple teams? I would really like the ability to view documents in Slack and comment on them (with the comments remaining with the document).

As a company who has multiple offices and people who often telecommute it is very nice that we can access them no matter where they are or what time zone they may be in. It is great for quick questions that do not warrant a phone call or email. An all around great tool.

Pros

I love the ease of use and the ability to access it wherever and whenever I need it. I can access it on my phone, computer, or tablet. I also love that I can snooze notifications. Whether I am in a meeting or do not want to be reached, I can set notifications to silent.

Cons

I wish it had more when it came to scheduling appointments. I do like that is syncs with my calendars, but there are times where it has caused a few problems with scheduling meetings.

It made communicating with my coworkers easy and fun.

Pros

I really like that there are so many features. From creating different groups to adding emojis to my profile to sending GIFs in group chats, it is great for communicating with team members.

Cons

The design is probably the worst. I wish they had customizable options or at least more neutral ones.

Pros

I like that this app helps everyone be on the same page, like instead of sending numerous text messages and driving people insane, you can actually see everyone's picture who writes and you can silence it without silencing your entire phone.
