Slack Software

Slack is a web-based project collaboration and team interaction tool designed to facilitate communication across organizations. The solution caters to various industries, including media, research, technology, education, financial services, retail, transport and logistics.

Slack provides public channels for members across organizations to start conversations. Private channels enable interaction within smaller teams, and direct channels help send messages directly to colleagues.

Slack incorporates feeds from social media into the application and blends them with ongoing conversations in various channels. Files such as PDFs, images, documents and spreadsheets can be shared via drag and drop.

Slack archives messages, notifications, files (as well as the contents of files) and projects, all of which can be searched for later. Slack allows users to customize their notifications and reduce their scope. All changes are reflected in the native applications available for iOS and Android.

Pros

The integrations are awesome, specially with Trello. Slack is consistent and reliable. It makes possible to connect our remote team.
The @mentions, the possibility to create different #Channels and the possibility to mute channels.

Cons

Paid version and free version have huge differences - for example the history tracking. Sometimes we needed to reach older messages but it wasn't possible.
It is expensive for small companies

Slack is a nice team communication tool but not for everyone

Ease-of-use

Customer Support

Value for Money

Pros

Enjoy the simplicity of Slack's interface and simple ability to search and find what you are looking for. Easy for newcomers to understand.

Cons

It lacks some capabilities that other collaboration tools have but Slack continues to evolve the product regularly.
A really big disappointment is Slack's discrimination against faith-based organizations. Our team partners with other inner-city ministries to work toward the mutual transformation of these impoverished neighborhoods, and Slack will not allow us to use the non-profit version with our partners since we are a ministry. Disappointing but we have also found many other technology companies like Microsoft that provide tools and resources for non-profits regardless of faith.

If your team isn't already using Slack, get on it! It's so cool

Pros

Slack gives our team the ability to connect and share information across teams, time zones, and cultures. I can't imagine doing my job without it!

Cons

I guess the con is that when it doesn't work it's really hard to communicate with the team!

Pros

I use Slack for interoffice communication. It is great to keep things organized and work communications off my text messages. It also syncs with my phone and apple watch.

Cons

Sometimes the App will be closed and I will not notice it. When that happens I can miss messages. Additionally sometimes its hard to search through conversations, but usually I find what I need.

We implemented slack when we discovered that everyone was using imessages while in office. This often made it appear like people weren't working when they really were (or in the alternative, they weren't working and people thought that they were). Slack has made our workday much more transparent.

Pros

We use slack for all of our interoffice communications. It helps us to cut down our emails, have discussions between groups and set daily reminders for ourselves. Plus it's a little whimsical and fun too!

Cons

I am not certain thats its necessarily a con but, Slack is always improving upon itself which means I am constantly having to install updates.

Slack has really helped our company better communicate across different projects and teams. It can get overwhelming to have too many channels, so it's really important to have a plan for when you create new channels so that they don't get out of control. One area that could be improved is around file management. While you can technically search for any file, sometimes it's still helpful to be able to access files in a hierarchal manner.

Slack is easily, the best business/productivity tool of the last 5 years. It's very simple to message, share files, review chat archives, and even program bots to handle recurring tasks using Slack. For our team, it's pretty much replaced Skype, GChat, and 95% of emails. We work with multiple clients and Slack also makes it easy to manage multiple teams, separately. If you have yet to use Slack, it is absolutely worth checking out immediately!

Pros

Great for any team size. Especially great for going back to find things that were discussed months or even years ago.

In an age of many messenger platforms, Slack sticks out because it is pretty committed to meeting users where they are with extra features and constant improvements.

Pros

It's intuitive and surprisingly thorough. You can call, video chat, or use it as a simple messenger. Better still, they are constantly adding new features and tools to streamline the process.

Cons

It could use more organization features. It would be nice to categorize contacts/conversations by project or client.

Pros

It has essentially replaced internal emails in my organization. I know have the ability to search back in time and reference conversations that were had weeks or years ago - as well as any files that were shared. The fact that we are also able to create channels for divisions and aspects of our business is huge in keeping things organized. Its fun to use. Things like gifs and custom emoji let you add your own personal culture to the program. There are SO MANY INTEGRATIONS! So if you are looking to automate parts of your business if you put in the time you will get your return on that time investment.

Cons

Sadly, it uses considerable system resources. On a Mac, each team you belong to requires a separate slack helper to run. If you are part of multiple teams - you could see upwards of 7 processes running. While my setup has more than enough power to sustain the extra resource draw - I would like to see it become a leaner program.

I'm able to use it to stay connected as a digital nomad working with a team that is in Shanghai while I am in the United States, mostly in New York City.

Pros

I had not been familiar with Slack before I joined a startup that involved working remotely from New York City while the rest of the team is in Shanghai. I really like the different channels that we can use it to communicate throughout the day. It allows me to stay connected with the team while I am in completely different time zone, ranging from sharing articles to having Chance and send direct messages. The different channels, which are basically thematic discussions or subject matter threads, I really helpful to stay on focus while still allowing for a range of discussions surrounding one topic. I also like how there are several integrations with other software packages, like Wunderlist and email, so I can check my email for the app and share with my team the things that I'm doing and completing so they can see what my workload is like. It basically have to feel as connected as I can to the team, despite being on a 12 hour delay, while I make plans to move to Shanghai.

Cons

Some of the functionality doesn't work with my older, like the video function within Slack to make phone calls.

Productivity, speed, robust access to all of our team members easily, and organization of all of our chat history. The app integrations are amazing as well with the software.

Pros

The absolute best part about Slack is the Channels system -- allowing each of our team members to organize and create channels that include the right people and items for each project. The ability to search through all of our chats is phenomenal and helps to keep our processes and organization in check. Adding in apps is absolutely seamless and there are plenty of Slack app implementations from all the other software we use. I think it's a perfect product and the absolute best when it comes to work chat for productivity and organization.

Cons

There's little to dislike about the software. If anything, I would say the price per user is a bit steep, and could be priced at around $4/user/month for their Standard plan. It also doesn't seem like they have discounts of any sort for certain amounts of users unless you go Enterprise, which doesn't make sense for us. Other than that, not much to dislike.

You can communicate with multiple groups of people on one app. Channels keep things organized and the mobile app is great!

Cons

There are a few small things which are frustrating, such as only being able to view the 9 most recent direct message/group messages, instead of being able to scroll through. I often use it just to see if someone is online/available, but I have to 'start' a DM with them every time. They do have customizable statuses, but I have to click on each person, which doesn't work for us as we use statuses to denote location for a dispersed team, so we need to be able to search for who is where (via their status) and then DM them with our question. Also, the limits in the free version get used up quickly!

saves time, organizes team, and keeps everyone in touch.

Pros

The pros include the ability to carry on conversations with team members individually and as a group. I also like the fact that it pulls the screen capture links I post from Jing into the conversation so users don't have to click on them. We just added honeybadger notifications to the system and looking forward to managing those there vs. my email. I'm sure there's a lot more in here that is awesome.

Cons

So far, I haven't been able to open images people attach in Chrome. I don't want to download them, go to downloads, and then open them. I'd like the option to open in chrome or download. Perhaps that's a setting somewhere.

Pros

Pros

The ability to add features and apps to it. Like emoji's and custom responses. I also am a fan of having unique channels.

Cons

When it needs to update it just doesn't work but rarely lets you know, it needs an update. Also have trouble with notifications never going away.
