Slack Software

Slack is a web-based project collaboration and team interaction tool designed to facilitate communication across organizations. The solution caters to various industries, including media, research, technology, education, financial services, retail, transport and logistics.

Slack provides public channels for members across organizations to start conversations. Private channels enable interaction within smaller teams, and direct channels help send messages directly to colleagues.

Slack incorporates feeds from social media into the application and blends them with ongoing conversations in various channels. Files such as PDFs, images, documents and spreadsheets can be shared via drag and drop.

Slack archives messages, notifications, files (as well as the contents of files) and projects, all of which can be searched for later. Slack allows users to customize their notifications and reduce their scope. All changes are reflected in the native applications available for iOS and Android.

Pros

I use Slack for interoffice communication. It is great to keep things organized and work communications off my text messages. It also syncs with my phone and apple watch.

Cons

Sometimes the App will be closed and I will not notice it. When that happens I can miss messages. Additionally sometimes its hard to search through conversations, but usually I find what I need.

We implemented slack when we discovered that everyone was using imessages while in office. This often made it appear like people weren't working when they really were (or in the alternative, they weren't working and people thought that they were). Slack has made our workday much more transparent.

Pros

We use slack for all of our interoffice communications. It helps us to cut down our emails, have discussions between groups and set daily reminders for ourselves. Plus it's a little whimsical and fun too!

Cons

I am not certain thats its necessarily a con but, Slack is always improving upon itself which means I am constantly having to install updates.

Pros

Extremely easy to use
Easily send files, pictures, and messages to a single person or a group of people
Potential email replacement at the office, giving more of a conversational element to work communications

Cons

Rarely if I leave my computer open, messages don't get pushed to my phone because it think I'm active on the computer (not a huge deal; not picky)

I would recommend this over Yammer any day of the week. It is a great product for in office collaboration and something that is easy enough to deploy.

Pros

It is easy to use, integrates seamlessly with multiple platforms and allows for easy workplace collaboration.

There is virtually no way to ensure private conversations are private. There is a lot of big brother watching you with this application.

I've tried it a couple times with my team. I believe they didn't find it easy to use, as we only had it used a couple times. It's nice and I still have it in my iPhone but maybe it should be a little bit easier to use.

Slack has really helped our company better communicate across different projects and teams. It can get overwhelming to have too many channels, so it's really important to have a plan for when you create new channels so that they don't get out of control. One area that could be improved is around file management. While you can technically search for any file, sometimes it's still helpful to be able to access files in a hierarchal manner.

Slack is easily, the best business/productivity tool of the last 5 years. It's very simple to message, share files, review chat archives, and even program bots to handle recurring tasks using Slack. For our team, it's pretty much replaced Skype, GChat, and 95% of emails. We work with multiple clients and Slack also makes it easy to manage multiple teams, separately. If you have yet to use Slack, it is absolutely worth checking out immediately!

Pros

Great for any team size. Especially great for going back to find things that were discussed months or even years ago.

In an age of many messenger platforms, Slack sticks out because it is pretty committed to meeting users where they are with extra features and constant improvements.

Pros

It's intuitive and surprisingly thorough. You can call, video chat, or use it as a simple messenger. Better still, they are constantly adding new features and tools to streamline the process.

Cons

It could use more organization features. It would be nice to categorize contacts/conversations by project or client.

After having Slack, I am loathe to open my mail application and wait for the flurry of unstructured cc'd messages that I don't really need to be on or two word responses. Slack takes the best of social networking habits and messaging and delivers it to all of my devices whenever it works for me.

Previously, we had email, Hangouts, physical office pop-ins, and a slew of other methods of communication-fighting for our attention. In the case of email, things were getting lost because team communication was getting mixed in with newsletters and another automated email, and was unrelated to the chats we were having in other systems. Now, just about everything we discuss is either in Slack or integrated with Slack, and it's searchable and shareable and all of that off-the-cuff knowledge people share no longer simply gets lost. Our team is much better off with Slack!

Pros

It's easy to use, it's very powerful, it offers a ton of great integrations with all of the other services we use, it keeps getting more features and functionality added regularly, it has a very functional Linux client, it's fun and enjoyable to engage with.

Cons

Sometimes it helps productivity and communication in many ways by consolidating it all in one place, but other times it saps productivity by making it too easy to get mired down in conversations often unrelated to the task at hand. It's not Slack's fault necessarily, and there are some tools in place to try and help, but it's easy to get caught up "using Slack" in some way instead of getting more work done.

A nice, clean, collaboration platform that has a lot of possibilities especially with the myriad of app integrations that could be done to it.

Pros

Windows app is clean, intuitive, and easy to use.

Synchronization between windows app and android app is great. I like the fact when I am logged into slack on Windows and have it on, it does not do an alert on my android but when I log off from the Windows app, it does. It works really well and a great feature because I am only notified when necessary.

I really enjoy using the giphy integration for the app as well, it makes my collaboration with my co-workers much more interesting than words and standard smileys.

Cons

I am not sure if this might be a feature that exists and I just do not know about it but there is no ability to add additional users to a direct message conversation. I have to make sure I include everyone that's relevant the first time when starting the direct message for one-off discussion topics where it does not make sense for me to create a channel.

Slack is a good communication platform that has a huge number of handy integrations that can be used to improve communications and productivity.

However, Slack's iPhone and Android apps are both horribly flawed. In certain Android phones, users can't use the thread function. In other Android phones, messages (especially direct messages) don't load when they should. In the iOS app, the direct messages that are closed on the desktop are not reflected in the direct messages list in the Slack iOS app (works on Android though)

Pros

Slack integrations are really useful.

Cons

The Slack Android and iOS apps are not up to par with the reputation Slack has garnered

Advice to Others

Slack is best used in the web browser or the desktop app because the phone apps are bad.

Being able to quickly communicate with team members across borders. Rich content such as emoji, images, file sharing helps to rapidly collaborate with others in real time. Very flexible and easy to integrate with other applications if a connector is provided.

Cons

Handling big groups can be daunting. If governance of information is required then this tool can make it difficult. I wish there were a metadata component to help classify and categorize conversations, tagging of documents would also help if available.
