Sisense Software

Sisense is an end-to-end business intelligence (BI) solution that was developed to be accessible for any type of user, even those with little or no prior experience with BI software. Their full suite of applications provide users with the tools they need to manage and support business data with analytics, visuals and reporting. This out-of-the-box system doesn’t require lengthy implementation or training, so businesses can have it up and running quickly.

Sisense’s standalone applications offer data and text mining with interactive analytics tools. ElastiCube is their analytics database that utilizes In-Chip technology, enabling a single server and minimal hardware with the ability to handle big data. Sisense lowered limits on data usage to maximize shared information between users.

Integrated within the suite, Sisense includes functionality for dashboards and scorecards, data warehousing, extract, transform and load (ETL) and a query and report writer. Everything is managed through one interface designed with the end-user in mind. Sisense can be deployed on-premise or over the cloud.

Sisense was chosen as one of the Top 10 BI Vendors of 2013 by CIO Magazine and “Best in Show” at the O’Reilly Big Data Strata conference.

We purchased the Sisense Dashboard application about 8 months. My company provides Broadband Service Assurance Solutions to companies all over the world. The product and services provided in many ways are customized to a particular market based on their specific needs and network. However one common theme in all markets is improving testability which is measuring the accuracy at which measurements and analysis are performed. The Sisense Dashboard application was chosen as it provides a comprehensive set of tools allowing implementation of customer specific dashboards in a short period of time. The people at Sisense are extremely knowledgeable about their product and are always willing to assist. I have had the pleasure to work with many individuals within Sisense and have many productive meeting and conversations with Alex Rich, the Tollgrade Customer Success Manager.

Pros

There are so many options and capabilities with the dashboard application that I see over time being able to enhance what I deliver to the different markets. This is important to keeping customers engaged.

Cons

Customer service trouble tracking is sometimes difficult to keep up with; tickets are closed before having an opportunity to look at suggested resolution.

Sisense will be the first to tell you how fast their product is (and tell you every fifteen minutes to make sure you don't forget!). They boast a speedy system with their in-chip analytics and web-based analysis that lets even older computers use their software. They certainly win in the aesthetics category, I found their UI to be incredibly intuitive and easy to learn. I was impressed by their willingness to spend time digging into your data as an example for their analytics software;

Pros

The UI is awesome, people will fall in love with how it looks.

Cons

When you start paying for licenses on a 'seat' basis your costs jump up quickly.

Advice to Others

Try out a few different softwares before making your choice. I recommend looking into Microsoft Power BI as a much more affordable option a

Sisense is a strong BI tool with an easy to use interface and quick back end. I had no trouble learning the interface and started building my first dashboards very quickly.

Pros

Quick and easy to use, has an ETL tool packaged with it.

Cons

Can be difficult for non-technical users to fully grasp the back end dashboard building.

Advice to Others

It is certainly work trying out, assuming you have a grasp of how databases are the setup you can use.

Sisense is a great tool that comes with many hidden gems.
It's perfect for IT departments that want to empower their users to be more educated about their data and help their user to make data-driven decisions.
With the abundance of data connectors, intuitive and powerful data mapping GUI and easy to use dashboards for both technical and non-technical user, Sisense is a great choice to serve as your data and BI back-end.

Pros

Powerful data-mapping GUI with great support for custom SQL and pre/post build plugins/scripts.
Intuitive dashboards for non-techies and tech-savvy users.
Dashboards support customisable plugins (with strong community support) and scripts to satisfy the power users.
Great API support for automation.
Solid technical support to help you with any technical challenges.
Access to features request.
Speedy delivery of new and useful functionality to increase the value of the product over time.

Cons

The new features can't come soon enough, but the roadmap looks solid and promises to deliver lots of goodies.
The API documentation could be improved, some more advanced functionality is not as clear as it could be, but there is always tech support to compensate for that.

Advice to Others

Don't get scared by abundance of functionalities that Sisense offers. It's rather easy to get started and you quickly get to the see the value and the power of Sisense. I'll find your self quickly iterating and extracting more and more value from the tool.

I'm a product manager, not a data scientist or linux guru. I needed a means of developing business analytics tools quickly that would meet my customers' needs. Sisense provides a platform for ETL, and web-based dashboard design that works really well.

Pros

High speed data analytics. Simple ETL. Reasonably simple dashboard design.

Cons

Somewhat inflexible in design choices. A Sisense dashboard is fairly easy to spot even if white labeled.

Advice to Others

Download the demo and allow one of the engineers at SiSense to build a custom browser based analytics tool quickly.

SiSense as an OEM Solution

We use SiSense as an OEM tool in place of a traditional OLAP deployment. We chose SiSense due to the out-of-the-box nature of the product, as it was quick to implement within our stack.

By far, the most impressive part of SiSense has been their customer success team. Edan has been an incredible success manager for us - professional, responsive, and informed. He's managed expectations on our end exceptionally well and accurately and gotten us the help we needed when we needed it. He's the primary reason four this 4-star rating - he's been simply fabulous.

Pros

The dashboard creation wizard is pretty robust and fairly easy to use. You will need an SME within the organization - this isn't a tool that I would simply throw at someone and expect them to learn in a few weeks, but that's largely due to the wide range of capabilities the tool has. However, the wizard is much more intuitive compared to a tool like Tableau.

The UI of the dashboards is beautiful and offers a nice range of customization features. It's a much prettier dashboard than Tableau.

Finally, the ability to write custom Javascript for formatting preferences has proven to be a very nice feature.

Cons

The cube processing itself is quite limited - this is not a big data tool. Cube builds on our dataset take almost two hours. Part of this has to do with our Elasticube design being suboptimal, but I would argue that just provides evidence that you need a very technical SME within your organization who has experience designing OLAP models.

My major objection is pricing - they charge on multiple vectors; by cube and also by a user. It's complex and the costs ramp up very quickly. I wish they'd pick one vector to price on, as it would make both budgeting and affordability much better.

Advice to Others

Think long and hard about design before you implement. Managing cube build times across a 100M dataset on SiSense is hard enough, let alone if you're trying to build a cube with a bad model.

Monitoring tools on system uptime are also incredibly important - having tools to augment the system monitoring SiSense has become very helpful for us.

I have been using this product for three months to create dashboards embedded in our software products to be used by our clients. Sisense is a powerful tool, albeit it has a number of drawbacks. The tool is quite clunky to work with, as it lags when creating dashboards with big datasets. It also seems to break down every once in a while.

Pros

Relatively easy to create different kinds of dashboards
Has an R plugin to do some intelligent analytics in the background

Cons

Breaks down often
Lags when creating dashboards with large datasets

Advice to Others

This maybe the tool you need to create internal dashboards. Albeit, it has yet to prove itself in the embedded space.

We've just completed the onboarding process with SiSense and everyone has been a pleasure to work with. Our prior vendor disappeared the minute we signed the contract. SiSense has been in touch with us every step of the way and it's made the process very smooth. Thank you!

Pros

Does not require IT staff to create reports. Our business users are very engaged creating reports for themselves.
Super slick UI.

Cons

Advice to Others

Go through the demo process and they will create a sample dashboard from your existing data. The process sold us on the tool.

Sisense was selected based on its ease of implementation in tandem with the ability for us to roll it out with limited training balanced with the overall investment required. We evaluated several other products and it was the most intuitive of all the products we looked at. The user base had a chance to use the application in a POC and picked it as a decisive winner over the other evaluations.

Pros

The best features of Sisense are the user-friendly interface and ability to deploy efficiently.

Cons

The application lacks a control of the exporting function. It gives you the ability to export both the dashboards and the widgets in 2 formats each, but the format of all the exports are not completely under the control of the administrators. Most of it is select a few options and hope it comes out looking professional. A reporting engine that allows the administrators to format a template used in the exporting options would go a long way.

Advice to Others

Take time and evaluate each product with your data and with the metrics that are important to you. All of the vendors tout a product that is full of functionality at an affordable price, when a lot of them struggle with some metrics. For us, we were looking for a ease to use platform that could be implemented quickly so we could begin the evolution of how we manage our data and our business.

Sisense has some features that put it ahead of the rest of the BI tools we researched when looking to upgrade our analytics. They have a robust back end that could clean our data and link it together, and an intuitive front end that allowed for quick dashboard creation and live filtering on those dashboards. Being able to answer complex business questions live for our management team is something Sisense allows and really puts us ahead of our competitions. Coming from the Vacation business YoY analytics per day is essential to set the correct price, Sisense's calendar heat maps were the best of any of the BI tools we investigated and is changing the way we price our product and the frequency we make those changes. That alone may make up for Sisese's higher price, but good support and implementation of the BI tool made up for the price difference.

Pros

Robust back end that cleans data, intuitive front end to create dashboards, support to properly implement and solve complex data problems

Cons

Higher price than competition

Advice to Others

If you need deep dive into your data and your business stands to benefit from making more and frequent data informed decisions, Sisense really is one of the best tools out there.

I was searching for a new data visualization tool for my company and came across SI Sense. After exploring the tool, I found it to be not very user friendly compared to its competitors and very limited with the provided visuals. My company was just looking for a versatile took, while SISense seemed to emphasize its data cubes and data transformation tools in their pitch. We decided to not go through with the purchase and received kind of a rude email from the sales team for wasting their time.

I began using Sisense in the hotel and hospitality industry and have since branched into other industries. I was intrigued with the product in the beginning but it was once I began using it on a daily basis and dug further into it's features that I realized the depth and robustness Sisense offers.

The first phase of using Sisense was with a company that implemented Sisense throughout every department (approx 60 users). This included frontline sales, accounting, marketing, account management, exec level - even the internal phone extension list was hosted in Sisense. For this company it removed the task of reporting from the IT department and shifted to myself - someone with a business/management background.

Whether I was supplying my end users with a pivot of 1000 reservations, or several different KPIs that measure daily sales performance, Sisense has brought value to each end user.

Pros

-Formula presets
-Web interface
-Simplicity connecting to separate data sets
-User friendly for non-BI end users

Cons

None as of yet.

Advice to Others

Sisense is a top to bottom BI tool that is suitable for small and large organizations. The largest area of value is that implementation and building reports is fast and easy.

Likes Best

The ease of use for end users. Great organization of information. Building dashboards don't require any in depth SQL knowledge, but you do need to have an idea of how the data is stored. Can link multiple data sources together (MSSQL, Oracle, Salesforce, MySQL can all be joined if fields allow).

Likes Least

Building the back-end requires in depth SQL knowledge if using complex databases. The joins are an inner join by default (can't select a different type, have to create a table defining a different join type). Licensed per user per year, but hosted on premises. Eats resources like it's candy. Really have to beef up your server running the back-end.

Recommendations

If you're looking for in depth analytics and have multiple data sources with the SQL knowledge to go with it, this is the tool for you. If you're looking to pull data from one or two tables, this is overkill.
