We started using Fishbowl several years ago, but we used it pretty basically at first. It really wasn't until the last year and a half that we have begun to use it more extensively. We continue to learn more and more about it's functionality and that it does much more than we originally thought it did. We have been able to get pretty much whatever information out of FB that we need, although at times we have to run 2 different reports and combine them via an Excel file to get the information. It would be great to have a little more flexibility in selecting different criteria when running reports.

Pros

Ease of navigation, fairly user friendly for basic functions (Sales Orders, Purchase Orders, general inventory management). I like the online help feature and the Fishbowl community where I can find a lot of answers I am looking for, as well as the training videos. The reports are easy to run. I have had good support when I call or email for answers. The people I have spoken to are knowledgeable and have gotten to understand our unique issues and have responded very well.

Cons

There are just some general issues that could make it easier to use. For instance the drop down windows are too small and having to click "more" until you find what you are looking for is a pain. I was told those windows were larger in the new version, but I haven't seen that. I have been told of some issues, but I haven't experienced them personally, as I haven't used Fishbowl for a lot of these functions, so I don't really know if they are issues, or if our inmate clerks just haven't figured out how to use it properly. Here is a list, in no certain order of issues I have been told about:
1. Reports, Gadgets MTD Cumulative Sales, MODIFY does not have a date range to select from.
2. FB does not have an "Escape" function to back out of things that may take a long time to run (such as SQL Queries), or and "Escape" function in general to get back if you have gone somewhere you don't want to.
3. Transfer Orders, Search, does not stay as Fixed Width Table.
4. Cannot set multiple lines and set the "Pick Location".
5. S.O. Module, the Vendor P.O. window needs more than 24 characters.
6. Alert notes for parts is limited to 90 characters and it needs to allow at least 255 characters.
7. DATA TAB Search Window: Resizing search plain does not stay as set after exit & returning to Data tab.
8. The Shipment History Report does not give the full Ship To Name. If space is a problem , could allow user to select a different paper size.
9. Need to be able to select a paper size in each report. When checking all options, reports do not show all lines, some are off the paper and don’t show when printed.
10. Shipping, Reports, Packing List, Options, needs to have “Notice(s) to print on all packing slips (up to 4 lines);” like Sales Orders Reports have.
11. Modify Report, Part list. Use % for wild card search. Cost values are based on today's costs. Wild Card does not work.
12. “FOB” does not have any way to set a default
13.“Shipping” needs the ability to select and ship a particular carton(s) and not others to avoid unpicking, shipping then repicking (but not shipping) remaining items.
14. Inventory TAB: Search plain results list 3 columns, Part Number, Qty, Description. Our Parts have different UOM’S and it would be nice to see a UOM column after the QTY column.
15. Sales Order, Product selection, SO Item Type, “Miscellaneous Sale” will not show up on a Packing Slip, these items need to show up in “Picking” so as to make a packing slip for them.

Getting training is expensive. The initial training we had mainly focused on how to navigate the system. It would be nice to be able to get some more training after using the system for awhile, but be able to focus more on how to get the information we need out of Fishbowl, the flexibility it may have that we are not aware of, etc.

Advice to Others

I think this is a very good inventory system and provides a lot of helpful information through reports, etc. I would take advantage of the training videos, and use it for awhile so you can ask specific questions when contacting FB Support.

The purchase was very smooth, lots of support with many people willing to help us but after we purchased this all came to a crashing stop. We have experienced long wait times for support and no calls back at times. They do offer a paid support service, but I would be hesitant as we had someone assigned to us and we could not get in touch with our "dedicated rep".

Used a few different versions of this at different companies. It is one of the more straight-forward ERP systems out there. The functionality and customization is low, but still has everything the next tier up has.

Pros

Clear layout/interface. Quick learning curve. Not cluttered with too much data.

Customization is difficult.

This product was perfect for my needs. I don't have a ton of inventory so I didn't want to splurge and spend an enormous amount and get more of a product than I needed. On the other hand, I didn't want to skimp and get the bare minimum. This product is a perfect compromise and meets my need perfectly.

Fishbowl Manufacturing is a server based product and we use it in conjunction with Fishbowl Inventory Management. On the whole it is a stable piece of software, with frequent updates and some improvements. The service staff is polite, easy to understand and knowledgeable when you can reach them. The Product appears to be able to grow with us as we do. There is an issue with large (Multiple line item) orders. The program seems to slow down considerably when accessing these.

Pros

Integration with Quickbooks, UPS worldship, and operates self-sufficient of any other applications.
Time and inventory management is intergrated into the workorder process.

Cons

There are some minor annoyances, such as being unable to modify a description of a Manufacturer Order when multiple BOMs are used. As I said it is intergrated with Fishbowl Inventory Management which has other issues that tie in here. Specifically, and this might just be due to the nature of our business (LED lighting manufacturing), the translation of UOMs from the Sales order to the Pick list. Pick tickets are based on a part number which uses the single smallest unit of measurement, but purchased products use larger easy to manager UOMs. It can at times confuse my pickers but it is an issue that we have grown to deal with.

It is also not always as intuitive as we would like to to be.

Advice to Others

Whether you are a MTO or a MTS type company, Fishbowl Manufacturing is a good product and I highly recommend examining the trial.

We're a small start-up and I was able to be in on the ground floor of the implementation. I helped build the system and have been the "Power User" for FishBowl. I've trained new employees, some of which hated FishBowl but after using the system and learning all the available features they love it.

Pros

Easy to use and offers many features to improve processes and efficiency. Offers a lot of user and technical support.

Cons

Overall I believe this is a great tool for inventory purposes. There is a bit of a learning curve, as with all products on the market. This is something that can help small and large businesses really take hold of their inventory and assets. Saving time and money is also a benefit of this product. Once you have a working inventory you are really able to stay organized for the future.

The inventory manager was actually very useful. The user interface was very easy to navigate and was very intuitive. Although it was intuitive, there were times where I couldn't figure out how to use the inventory manager.
