Fishbowl Inventory Software

Fishbowl Inventory is designed for small to mid-sized companies looking for a complete inventory management system without replacing QuickBooks for accounting. We hear from lots of companies using a combination of QuickBooks and Excel who say they need a more robust solution but are not ready for an enterprise-level ERP system. These companies typically want a low-cost system that will not require them to replace QuickBooks. We recommend Fishbowl to these types of firms. Fishbowl Inventory is easy to implement and affordable, yet flexible enough to meet the needs of companies that require more streamlined inventory control, material requirements planning (MRP), and job shop floor control / manufacturing execution. It takes an inventory-centric approach, providing features for barcoding, asset management, raw materials management, cycle counting, and customized reporting. The system also automates the quoting, ordering, and purchasing processes. Fishbowl Inventory is used in just about every industry by companies earning up to $100 million in annual revenue. It offers extensive training and support resources through its training videos, online tutorials, in-house specialists and more. Fishbowl’s seamless integration with QuickBooks makes it easy for users to integrate manufacturing, sales, and distribution processes with back office accounting. For nearly 10 years, Fishbowl has held Intuit’s Gold Partner status, the highest level of service third-party integrators can achieve.

We are a small company with traditional needs. This product integrates well with QuickBooks which makes it a "set it and forget it" tool. It has really allowed our team members to focus on more value added tasks than the normal/traditional administrative things.

As with anything, price is always a consideration. Make sure your needs match the value of this product because it isn't cheap. It also takes some time (and even some training sessions) to get it all setup so make sure you have the available resources to do it properly.

The interface is fairly intuitive and very user friendly. Very supportive implementation team works with you until THEY say you are ready to be on your own. You get a BIG bang for you buck with this software! I am an Office Manager is a small but growing company. For us, that meant I am the accountant, the inventory control, the sales person and the shipper. Fishbowl does not just teach you about the parts they feel you need to know. You get the whole package. Their onsite training was worth every penny!

Likes Least

Once you have saved your Quickbooks file in the spot where it will be stored, you cannot change the name of it. If you do, you loose your seamless translation. Fishbowl can't find it. This meant that our habit of renaming our backups by the date had to end.

Once in a while (maybe twice), I have to wait a few hours for a tech support callback. Considering it's only hours instead of days, that's actually pretty great! It's as close to instant gratification that I've ever gotten with a customer/technical support team.

Recommendations

Look around, try the demos and make the software vendors install something you can play with on your machine. Some companies we talked to won't or can't do that. Use as many of your real-world experiences in your interviewing of the company as possible. Be sure to tell the prospective vendor exactly what you need to do and how it needs to be done. Give them flow charts of the process if you have them. Have people from all departments on your evaluation team. Once you implement, get the vendor supplied training, even if it's at an extra cost.

Ease of use, it hasn't taken more that a day or so to get new users up and running in their departments. WE have several Fishbowl subject matter experts that have picked up the more advanced stuff in a few weeks.

I've never had to wait more that 24 hours for a support issue, and if its urgent I can usually get support that day.

Our integration partner has been fantastic and Fishbowl is working flawlessly with our Quickbooks and website, we've even had a few custom reports made to expand our inventory control.

Likes Least

The one feature i would really like to see is a "make from" function. So I can use raw material, make parts from it, and have Fishbowl consume the raw material and add in the parts made from it. I know I can get around this with a bill of materials but it can consume a lot of time for a simple procedure.

Recommendations

Take the time to build your database right. While it was time consuming I ended up exporting our products out of Quickbooks as a CSV file, formatted it for Fishbowl and imported that list. Them I built all the sub-assemblies and assemblies this acted as a double check of our existing BoM's and was a must for correct inventory numbers.

I enjoy the layout of the fishbowl software. The visibility and functionality is wonderful. It is very simple to use, even the least computer savvy person is able to learn it quickly. The chat help function is the best way to get answers. Reports are easily exported to excel. Color coded availability allows the shipping department to know which orders can be fulfilled. The tabs are nice and neat for what you need such as, picking, shipping, parts, products, and customers. Order entry is nice and neat.

Their suggestion box is a black hole. You'll be lucky if you get a technical support response over the phone within 48 hours. It seems like we are bothering them when we need help. Updates are not perfect, has issues sometimes that have to be fixed. Even if they do fix a problem, they wont tell you what or how they fixed it. Depending on your operations, inventory numbers can get skewed. No way to drill down into orders. Instead you have to copy and paste the invoice number into another tab.

Recommendations

If you are looking to add Fishbowl to work alongside Quickbooks, I would instead look into a fully integrated all-in-one software system. We are currently going through the process of moving away from Fishbowl and Quickbooks.

Where do I begin, destroys your Quickbooks financial information by bringing over all items that are sold from your website as FB_item. Hope you don't need to look up reports by what item was sold! Creates new customers in Quicbooks when there is already one in Quickbooks. We tried to make this work for us for 6 months, and after all that time we just gave up. After being told by a sales rep that this program would connect with quickbooks and carry over our quickbooks item names multiple times, I called support to learn that "Fishbowl doesn't do that". Don't waste your time or money on this program, you will regret it I assure you.

Likes Least

1. IT issues
a. Having to reset company server every Sunday. As per IT department, this is a known issue on Fishbowl’s end with no plans to fix
b. Having to reset fishbowl server every day due to export failures. Again, known issue.
c. The client stalls on our staff daily. Just this past week, collectively we've had to kill the application 40 times due to random lock-ups. This is not an issue on our IT department's end.
d. Our quickbook's database has increased tenfold due to the amount of exports fishbowl has made over the last three years. Manuvering in Quickbook's is now a nightmare here in Canada since users are unable to compress the database anymore.
2. Internal Control
a. No audit trail as it relates to changes to SKUs, POs, SOs, changes to inventory valuations
b. Inability to lock down PO and SO items after they are issued
c. Inability to police SKU creation. We need users to be able to create SKUs and submit to management for approval. Once approved, the SKU details are locked down. Fishbowl's user account control is VERY limited.
3. Reporting
a. Poor inventory reporting – not able to view listing at a specific date. Fishbook’s workaround does not reconcile to the quickbooks ledger since the report is only a snapshot and not an actual valuation at that date.
b. Not able to customize views on reports such as POs, SOs, etc.
c. Inventory days aging calculation is flawed. If I move inventory to another location, it resets to zero. That is not how days in inventory is properly calculated. Fishbowl can’t calculate this measure since historical values are not stored. Same with GMROII.
d. Inability to create custom reports to track measures such as inventory performance and turnover. Historical carrying cost data is not stored.
4. Poor integration with Quickbooks
a. If SKUs accounts were not correctly mapped, a change must be made in both fishbowl and quickbooks after the fact. If we were able to police SKU creation properly, this would rarely be an issue.
b. Live inventory valuation in Fishbowl almost never agrees with ledger and I can’t figure out why.

Recommendations

Get an all-in-one type of system with a user-base of at least 100,000. Fishbowl's user base is only 5,000 and rightfully so (if they are lucky). Hold your reseller accountable. Invest time in training. Do not try to extend the inevitable limited life of Quickbooks.

Use to be one of our best software we owned as it was reasonable fast and work well. Today it is the worse.

This used to be a great software but ever since release of 15.7 we have had nothing but issues with the software and there support team is terrible at best. Before the release of 15.7 to ship 100 orders it would take the system less than 5 mins, today it take over an hour. There support team just say sorry that is the way it is.

Recommendations

This software is only for a company that does very few orders. We process about a 1000 orders a day and the system takes hours to record shipments.

Every time you call customer support "your team" is unavailable. I think by team, they mean the 1 person who might be able to help you and might not be available for many days. No real time help or answers, just promised call backs. We unfortunately found, after purchasing, that Fishbowl could not do a specific function we needed. A specific item I was promised during the sales process has not even been addressed yet. No refund was given or even considered, even though we were willing to sign an agreement to purchase when the function was added in a couple of months (we were told that it was going to be).

Recommendations

Do you homework. I truly have to believe there are better solutions out there and I am very disappointed that we are stuck trying to make this software work for us.
