Fishbowl Inventory Software

Fishbowl Inventory is designed for small to mid-sized companies looking for a complete inventory management system without replacing QuickBooks for accounting. We hear from lots of companies using a combination of QuickBooks and Excel who say they need a more robust solution but are not ready for an enterprise-level ERP system. These companies typically want a low-cost system that will not require them to replace QuickBooks. We recommend Fishbowl to these types of firms. Fishbowl Inventory is easy to implement and affordable, yet flexible enough to meet the needs of companies that require more streamlined inventory control, material requirements planning (MRP), and job shop floor control / manufacturing execution. It takes an inventory-centric approach, providing features for barcoding, asset management, raw materials management, cycle counting, and customized reporting. The system also automates the quoting, ordering, and purchasing processes. Fishbowl Inventory is used in just about every industry by companies earning up to $100 million in annual revenue. It offers extensive training and support resources through its training videos, online tutorials, in-house specialists and more. Fishbowl’s seamless integration with QuickBooks makes it easy for users to integrate manufacturing, sales, and distribution processes with back office accounting. For nearly 10 years, Fishbowl has held Intuit’s Gold Partner status, the highest level of service third-party integrators can achieve.

This product works as intended and frankly if you are looking of a lot of bells and whistles Fishbowl can be customized to give you what your looking for.

Likes Least

Cost is a little high and frankly they rely to much on their support team to fix a lot of issues that could be resolved with proper training.

Recommendations

Always check to make sure that the software program will actually integrate with other programs you use, with special attention to the versions of software you are integrating.

Software was very easy to understand and implement. There are a few valuable stock reports.

Data module allows you to write your own SQL queries.

Likes Least

1. IT issues
a. Having to reset company server every Sunday. As per IT department, this is a known issue on Fishbowl’s end with no plans to fix
b. Having to reset fishbowl server every day due to export failures. Again, known issue.
c. The client stalls on our staff daily. Just this past week, collectively we've had to kill the application 40 times due to random lock-ups. This is not an issue on our IT department's end.
d. Our quickbook's database has increased tenfold due to the amount of exports fishbowl has made over the last three years. Manuvering in Quickbook's is now a nightmare here in Canada since users are unable to compress the database anymore.
2. Internal Control
a. No audit trail as it relates to changes to SKUs, POs, SOs, changes to inventory valuations
b. Inability to lock down PO and SO items after they are issued
c. Inability to police SKU creation. We need users to be able to create SKUs and submit to management for approval. Once approved, the SKU details are locked down. Fishbowl's user account control is VERY limited.
3. Reporting
a. Poor inventory reporting – not able to view listing at a specific date. Fishbook’s workaround does not reconcile to the quickbooks ledger since the report is only a snapshot and not an actual valuation at that date.
b. Not able to customize views on reports such as POs, SOs, etc.
c. Inventory days aging calculation is flawed. If I move inventory to another location, it resets to zero. That is not how days in inventory is properly calculated. Fishbowl can’t calculate this measure since historical values are not stored. Same with GMROII.
d. Inability to create custom reports to track measures such as inventory performance and turnover. Historical carrying cost data is not stored.
4. Poor integration with Quickbooks
a. If SKUs accounts were not correctly mapped, a change must be made in both fishbowl and quickbooks after the fact. If we were able to police SKU creation properly, this would rarely be an issue.
b. Live inventory valuation in Fishbowl almost never agrees with ledger and I can’t figure out why.

Recommendations

Get an all-in-one type of system with a user-base of at least 100,000. Fishbowl's user base is only 5,000 and rightfully so (if they are lucky). Hold your reseller accountable. Invest time in training. Do not try to extend the inevitable limited life of Quickbooks.

Use to be one of our best software we owned as it was reasonable fast and work well. Today it is the worse.

Likes Least

This used to be a great software but ever since release of 15.7 we have had nothing but issues with the software and there support team is terrible at best. Before the release of 15.7 to ship 100 orders it would take the system less than 5 mins, today it take over an hour. There support team just say sorry that is the way it is.

Recommendations

This software is only for a company that does very few orders. We process about a 1000 orders a day and the system takes hours to record shipments.

Every time you call customer support "your team" is unavailable. I think by team, they mean the 1 person who might be able to help you and might not be available for many days. No real time help or answers, just promised call backs. We unfortunately found, after purchasing, that Fishbowl could not do a specific function we needed. A specific item I was promised during the sales process has not even been addressed yet. No refund was given or even considered, even though we were willing to sign an agreement to purchase when the function was added in a couple of months (we were told that it was going to be).

Recommendations

Do you homework. I truly have to believe there are better solutions out there and I am very disappointed that we are stuck trying to make this software work for us.

We purchased Fishbowl because it was our best option for organizing the types of products we sell. The product tree feature in Fishbowl does a great job of this. Previously, we used QuickBooks for inventory, but it was not robust enough. Fishbowl is a great step up from QB. -- The support we've received from Fishbowl has been excellent. We use online chat whenever we have a quick question, and it saves us hours of trial & error or searching through the manual (which is written well but not specific enough to our business.)

Likes Least

The reports provided with the Fishbowl package are minimal and have very little flexibility. Purchase provides iReports, but that takes more software savvy than I have. Fishbowl has great consultants available on a referral basis.

Recommendations

Make sure you know what your highest priorities are and that the product fits those needs. It's still an "out-of-the-box" package, and doesn't have much room for customization. We've had to change some of our inhouse processes to fit with Fishbowl's operation. There are certainly adjustment pains to overcome, but I still think it's worth it.

Fishbowl is a very powerful tool that will enable you to run your whole warehouse. The structure and process flow of the software gives management full control and visibility of all aspects of the operation (hence the name, fishbowl). It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, so if you have a mixed platform environment like we do, it's a great fit. The whole system is really world-class and they offer superb customer support.

Likes Least

If there was one wish I could make, is that the cost per additional user was a little lower.

Recommendations

Do some reading and some research on alternatives. Focus on what your needs are, not only on what the software can do. Get users involved in the research and the evaluation process. See how easy it is (or not) for them to understand the process workflow the software offers.

The initial integration of Fishbowl into our Quickbooks system was a little more complicated than we had anticipated but the assistance we received through the process was terrific! The person assigned to train us was so helpful in getting us set up and comfortable working in Fishbowl and after the initial start up, he was available for any questions or concerns we might have had and was very prompt with his responses.

Likes Least

In Quickbooks, you can get history (both purchasing and sales information) on a part number with little more than a right click of your mouse, which is really a great tool. Fishbowl doesn't have such an easy process for getting history on a part since it divides parts (purchases) and products (sales) so two reports are required for a comprehensive look at one material type.

Recommendations

Ease of use and integration with your existing accounting software is key. Any downside with reporting information is minor compared with how well Fishbowl and Quickbooks work together.

Fishbowl is a great company to work with! They are a solutions based company that strives to take the input of their customer. When we first implemented Fishbowl Inventory Software three years ago, we utilized their on site training to help assist with the setup and initial training. They don't just provide a cookie cutter approach to their support and training, they realize they work with all types of industry and have been able to adapt their software to work in nearly every need for inventory related purposes. Their software is easy to use, better than a DOS based system, and has great user interface for easy training of employees.

Likes Least

Fishbowl is very good at answering your questions and their tech support. Sometimes you have to leave a message and they have to return a phone call, however it is in a timely manner, and they generally have a solution prior to calling you back, getting your issue resolved in a timely manner. Their "live chat" on their website is a good alternative if they are unavailable by phone and your question just can't wait.

Recommendations

If you are a small to medium business, implementing fishbowl will allow you growth in your business. Our main goal in implementing fishbowl was to keep our cash flow liquid and to provide a tool for forecasting inventory through seasonal peak demand and low demand time periods, allowing us to focus more on things like marketing instead of waiting for the products to go off the shelf, keeping our cash flow tied up on the shelf. Since implementing fishbowl we have brought organization, forecasting, and awareness to our business, more than what we had before. And it is backed by good product customer support. These are the reasons why I would recommend Fishbowl Inventory!
