Lightspeed Retail is platform-agnostic, point of sale solution that can be accessed anywhere, at anytime. Lightspeed OnSite is a server-based, retail management solution exclusively for Mac and iOS. Both allow retailers to unify inventory, manage customers, process transactions and dig deep into their store’s analytics.

Multi-store capability keeps inventory synced across all locations, while mobile extensions mean that associates can check on inventory and conduct sales from anywhere in the store via iPad. Retailers looking to expand into e-commerce can also take advantage of Lightspeed’s fully integrated Web store, which handles inventory across in-store and online.

The customer service. I've had Lightspeed since 2013 and used to rave about it. They sold it to me because of a seamless integration with Shopify and great reports. During the past 6 months, some of my favorite reports have been unavailable. Every time I ask about them the answer is "we're working on it." The Shopify integration is no longer available. They never said this. Instead of warning the customer about possible inventory issues this causes, they let it get to the point that I sold things we haven't had in the store for months. Every time I called about this they would do a "push through" - this would NOT correct the issue, but it would make me spend hours fixing other issues. After 6 months of wondering what is going on and asking to break the contract that they got me in because of this feature that no longer works, they come clean...the Shopify feature no longer works.

Recommendations

If you use Shopify and want an integration, do NOT use this. For reports, even though they have had many issues during the past 6 months/year, I do think they are some of the best...but I don't think it's worth the price considering all the recent issues.

The fact that it is a cloud-based product with a good amount of customization ability. It's quick and easy to add another terminal, so if we expand we can turn it on at another location very easily. We were up and running quickly and have gradually taken advantage of additional features. Right now we are implementing gift cards, which was something of a manual process (read that as 'it was a pain') before Lightspeed. I could see Lightspeed being a great option for many types of retail businesses.

Lightspeed works great for the retail side of our business. On the other hand, we do have a fair amount of rental business (tuxedos) that isn't as smooth. There are other POS solutions that are built for rentals but they were not cloud-based and were more expensive to purchase. We're willing to live with the limitations for now, since it is still a step up from our previous system.

My second issue is with an integration with a credit card terminal through one of their partners, Cayan - basically a counter based touch screen system like you'd find a Walgreens or CVS that accepts chip cards. We've been struggling with Lightspeed tech support for over a month while they work on pushing out a software update to get it working. I'm guessing the marketing folks got ahead of the tech folks. I'm glad I didn't cancel my old credit card processor yet.

Recommendations

Take advantage of the test period, put it through it's paces for your business. If you do any sort of rentals, know that it's just not built for that so get ready for work-arounds and some parallel manual processes to handle that side of your business.

Pay attention to the depth and breadth of the product some like Square are overing a product that is not as good by giving away some hardware in return fro the credit card processing.

A couple months ago they have been issues with server so it was hard to rely on the system but now it seems back on track. Also I thought I was buying a Montreal base company but expect from the sale team who's in Montreal, support team is not and they don't speak French or it's hard to find a French resources.

Recommendations

I know it's hard to really know your need when you first start a business but try to ask a lot of question to your rep and maybe try to go meet another user of the system.

If your focus is on your webstore, search your POS options with this in mind. I find Lightspeed's webstore templates to be extremely limiting.

The best Pos system should be easy to use, and also do more than just accept payments and process sales. It should have time-management, employee management, marketing tools, customer data gathering, and capabilities that make it easier to run and grow your business. The vendor should also provide dedicated solutions for your type of business and offer friendly and knowledgeable customer service.

Recommendations

We liked that it is available both on PC as well as mobile. We were looking for a solution that would help us with gift registries and they had options for it (although not necessarily a gift registry system, the work-around is appropriate) . The interface is easy to follow. We also need a way to enter and track work orders and their system is perfect for our needs.

I'm a new customer, so I'm mostly reviewing the sales process. I felt that the people at Lightspeed answered all my questions and I chose the solution based on comparisons with quite a few other products. Lightspeed Retail was one of the very few that offered a seamless platform for POS and ecommerce, which was a big requirement for me. Some other products could do that, but their interfaces were very clunky. Lightspeed Retail is easy to navigate and has a lot of features that I was looking for: gift cards, matrixed products, importable catalogs, purchase order receiving, and much more.

I'm a little concerned about the downtime that other reviews mention, but so far have not experienced that.

Recommendations

I like to test drive products on my own time, as well as getting an online demo. With the test drive I was able to try out real examples of my data and see if the software features worked for me.

The user interface is fairly easy to use. Training new employees how to use the system was easy.

Some of the concepts get complicated - my staff still has a hard time wrapping their heads around how monies work for Special Orders. The canned reports need more information in them - I'm missing some critical pieces of data.

Recommendations

Spend some time playing with the demo and plugging in some real data. We came from another robust POS system and Lightspeed has a very different way of looking at data. It took me a while to figure it out and decide how best to utilize Lightspeed to help my employees and customers do what they need to do.

We are using the Onsite Version. The Service Module integrates with the web store which allows customers to view their work orders online in real time. The service module also integrates beautifully with Apple's Service API. For sales the POS Screen takes 10 minutes to learn. Very nice layout. The Storemaster Module is available for back-end and power-users. It's got a logical interface and powerful customization such as smart finds and trackers that can be constantly tweaked to improve efficiencies. I absolutely love this program and so do all the staff that use it.

I like it all. There are a couple of more features I would like to see to simplify workflow (like an instant email function for work orders) but hopefully those will be implemented with time.

We love the ease of use and SaaS model. This allows us to get business information at anytime anywhere and that is critical! Inventory control is key for us. Lightspeed is allowing us to fine tune inventory so we can better manage cash flow and keep customers happy. This was almost impossible to do before by hand based on how fast we have grown. Reporting is terrific and end of quarter HST will be a breeze. This system is going to save us many hours of tedious frustrating work!

Our experience with lightspeed so far (as we migrate from the old POS system) has been nothing but positive. It streamlines everything, be it retail or in the workshop- it's a perfect fit. The support staff have been great in helping us every step of the way, looking forward to making the switch to lightspeed as soon as we receive the new hardware. Online support is fast and amazing.

We've been using Lightspeed Retail for close to a year now and have been very happy. My biggest compliment is how user friendly the entire platform is. The system is very intuitive which saves me hours when training a new employee. Any computer-literate person can jump in and figure out the essentials on their own in a matter of minutes. I'm still learning the ins and outs of some of the more advanced settings/reports, but if they're anything like the features I use daily, I suspect I'll be happy with those too.

I've had to call customer support several times over the last year, and each time has been a pleasant experience. Most recently, I was on hold, waiting for a representative to pick up. After about 30 seconds, I was offered to have them call me back once one became available. It worked well because I could go back to working on other things. About 20 minutes later, I got the call, the rep immediately fixed one of my issues, then said he'd have our account manager call back to help with my other question (he wasn't able to make the changes I was requesting). Our account manager called back later that day, and after doing some research, got us exactly what we were hoping for.

I can understand people's dissatisfaction with being on hold or waiting for someone to call you back. If it's an urgent issue, that would be very frustrating. Maybe we've been lucky, but none of the issues I've had to call about have been time sensitive so it worked really well having them call me back instead of being stuck on the phone waiting for someone to pick up.

All in all, we've be very satisfied with their service. Hopefully things continue to improve!

Honestly, I have very little complaints. Maybe have more support reps so there's no hold time? But I realize adding the extra staff would get expensive quick.

Give it a try! I believe they offer month to month subscriptions so there's very little investment.
