Lightspeed Retail Software

Lightspeed Retail is platform-agnostic, point of sale solution that can be accessed anywhere, at anytime. Lightspeed OnSite is a server-based, retail management solution exclusively for Mac and iOS. Both allow retailers to unify inventory, manage customers, process transactions and dig deep into their store’s analytics.

Multi-store capability keeps inventory synced across all locations, while mobile extensions mean that associates can check on inventory and conduct sales from anywhere in the store via iPad. Retailers looking to expand into e-commerce can also take advantage of Lightspeed’s fully integrated Web store, which handles inventory across in-store and online.

The design-centric software offers large photos to help retailers visually get a handle on their inventory.

With more than 18,000 stores in over 30 countries, Lightspeed’s clients processed over $6 billion in transactions in 2013 alone. The company also has a strong global network of certified resellers, who can meet with retailers one-on-one where they live.

Where to begin. Lightspeed is hands down the best cloud-based POS software around.
USE: To begin, it's all in the name! Lightspeed is a FAST point of sale platform. We're able to search through tens of thousands of customers/products instantly. The user interface is VERY intuitive and set-up/maintenance is effortless.

INVENTORY: If your business sells items with variants (such as size or nicotine strength), Lightspeed has INCREDIBLE matrix capabilities. Easy to use, edit, and maintain. The platform has outstanding product history including sales, purchase orders, transfers, and manual adjustments. Our shrinkage has almost disappeared! We're on top of our inventory like never before.

REPORTS: If I'm being honest, I would have to say that Lightspeed has almost too many reports. However, they are all very detailed and easy to use/reference to!

MULTIPLE LOCATION: My FAVORITE part! We have two B&M locations. Lightspeed KILLS the multiple location games! Check inventory from both locations at once. Create store to store transfers. Utilize Lightspeed's time clock feature and export labor reports for each location individually or for both combined! Switching between locations is two clicks away. Most financial and inventory reports have options to populate all or one location data. Lightspeed also allows multiple registers per location!

OVERALL: After using nearly every major POS system on the market, I'm confident in saying Lightspeed is the best. They are second to none. Forget Shopify, Square, NCR, Bindo, etc. Lightspeed is the best solution!

Upon, attending the NRA in Chicago, we thought we found an awesome new POS system for our bistro. We were expecting that we would run our operation more efficiently than we have in the past, but Lightspeed is really not restaurant friendly. The system is so cumbersome and simple operations are very time consuming (our operation, like all restaurants, needs fast and easy transactions).

Most upsetting is that we were misled in many ways by the Lightspeed sales rep. Upon giving the rep our list of requirements we were told the system is fully capable.

Currently, we are unable to manually process credit cards although the Rep assured us that they work with our processor, Vantiv/Mercury. We were also told our printers would work with the POS system, but after install, we soon realized that none of our printers were compatible and we had to order another equipment which cost us a lot.
Lightspeed does not appear to have been written by someone in the restaurant industry as there are certain functions that are common in our industry that is not available. Or if they are available they are so out of wack and really clumsy. If you think you might want this system, here is a list of functions you might want to try before buying:
Voids and Discounts, Splitting guest checks, BOH reporting (specifically End of Day, Cashout reporting, if you are going to use registers), Barista’s claiming tips, To-Go module or fast transaction module (almost laughable as nothing this system does is fast).
I urge you not to make the system mistake as I did and look elsewhere. If you have a restaurant think twice, and anything you choose DEMO, DEMO, DEMO.
If you do settle on Lightspeed, I would get all of your requirements or a list of things your rep has told you the system will do in writing and get a contract signed because they are probably misleading you just as I was.
Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere (Revel, Touchbistro, RM POS, Aloha, Micros)

We started using Lightspeed Retail in July of 2016. We love the fact that the POS is in the cloud. We were opening a second location so we wanted a POS that could handle more than one location. Transferring inventory from one store to the other in the system is super simple. I really like the reports. It gives me the information I need quicker than I could get it out of my old POS. It has been easy to teach our staff how to use as well, and we have a lot of part-time staff.

Pros

In the cloud, so I can access it from anywhere.
Works on multiple platforms, so I can use the iPad app, or open it on a mac, or on a PC.
Easy to use.
Great for multiple locations.
E-commerce inventory is linked to the main store's inventory. So when something sells it is immediately gone from the website.

Cons

The e-commerce platform has very limited functionality. The website I had back in 2008 had more functionality than this one does.
You cannot put an item on sale. You can only use a coupon code.
Customer support is very limited. While it is great for the POS side the support for the Ecom side is separate and nowhere near as good.

Advice to Others

If you have a good website already, (like I did, I had a volusion site), don't do this unless you plan to keep your website. If you do not have a website already, then you do not know what you are missing out on ... The POS is great, but don't take it on if you want a great website.

After reviewing 5 POS systems I selected Lightspeed due to the features most relevant to my needs, naturally. Thus far, it has been very intuitive and user-friendly. When I do encounter a problem I can usually seek the help link for a video that perfectly answers my question. Customer service has been easy to contact and as helpful as they can be within the parameters of what is offered by Lightspeed. There was some miscommunication in the beginning because after I signed up and paid it was clarified that I could, indeed, have five logins at the same time but, alas, only 1 register and if I needed to run more than 1 register I would have to pay extra--a small detail was not explained clearly in the negotiation stages. Being a newbie at purchasing POS software I did not know all the right questions to ask, so as my advice to the reader of this review--know what questions you need to ask. Try to think of any and every scenario.

Pros

User-friendly, Intuitive, Great inventory management system. Able to create special orders and be notified by the system when a product comes in to reconcile to a special order. Customer service is friendly and helpful. Lightspeed is willing to hear suggestions about software and possibly to do upgrades to improve functionality.

Cons

Fields for viewing POs need to be customizable but are not. Need to be able to view how PO will look before sending and customize it before sending. Currently, the system is not set up this way. I have to export my PO, then customize it, attach it to a header and then send it. An extra step I wish I did not have to take but happy to at least be able to do it this way for now.

Advice to Others

Know what questions you need to ask. Try to think of any and every scenario.

We opened our brick and mortar bicycle retail and service shop July this year. We started with Vend POS, but that was not well suited for our labor-heavy business model. Shortly thereafter we transitioned to Lightspeed, and could not be more pleased. Nearly all our vendor catalogs are already in Lightspeed, so receiving inventory is easy. Further, Lightspeed's item types simplify selling bulk items, tracking serial numbers, etc. Most of all, we appreciate the ease with which we can now log customers, their bicycle information, and the services we perform for them, all in tandem with each other.

I would highly recommend Lightspeed to anyone operating a bicycle shop!

It's not the people, really. Anyone you speak to are fabulous, however, the company ties their hands in what they can do. They have so many qualified and skilled people, but the company has focused on growing worldwide and not actually the logistics of knowing what their own policies and procedures are. Customer Support is constantly trying to put out fires and fix issues in Production instead of figuring all that out in the Testing Phase. And if you actually find a problem in which the Support staff agrees is a problem and creates a ticket for it, when it goes to the next lead programmer, they tend to dismiss it and never let you know.

Pros

The Customer Support Staff that you talk to from, unfortunately, the only one phone number they have available.

Cons

- Expects customer to use the API if they need any design changes
- Expects the customer to keep track of problems they find and keep having to contact them
- Absolutely no ability to contact any management in any way, shape or form. All emails are the same but are coded in a way that they will go back to them but only if they send you an email directly. If you expect someone in management to contact you but they don't, you're screwed. And since there is only one phone number to use to call, that only gives you the general support staff or Billing. What I have generally found is that Support understands exactly what's going on and understands what you are going through and what needs to be done. It's the second line of defense that who think you're crazy, or the standard comment is that they are aware of the problem and are working on it. However, the problem isn't listed anywhere in the CMS that the customers are allowed to see...which displays only customer requests, not the actual problems that they are working on.

Advice to Others

If you think this company will have your back, you will be extremely disappointed!!! They seem to only care about growing the number of offices they have internationally and not making sure these offices are completely integrated and the staff that are supposed to be helping you are actually allowed to access the tools, I believe, they are more than qualified to do. My advice: Run. Run far far away!!!

We love lightspeed. It does everything we need- it tracks our inventory, submits purchase orders, is compatible with QuickBooks, etc. It is the only program that we use for our retail shop and we have no complaints!

Pros

It is an all in one system. I meet with vendors and they are amazed at how I can enter a product number and it pulls up everything you need to know about that product.

Cons

Nothing.

After interviewing over two dozen POS companies we found that LightSpeed was the right choice for our company. We operate multiple locations and an online store. The largest benefit we saw LightSpeed offered was their integration with the various website designs. I also found the customer service to be superior to all the other offerings on the market.

Pros

Website integration, inventory integration between multiple locations, overall flexibility of the software

Cons

Can only work with an internet connection

Advice to Others

the cloud-based software requires an internet connection at all times, so I would recommend having a backup like an Ipad with network access.

Couldn't have found a better retail POS software that works right from my iPad, or phone to check on inventory from the sales floor or ring up customers in line or at vendor holiday shows. Easily place products into a website which has some great free themes to choose from. Love that integrating a blog is there but it's not as well set up as it could be for a profitable blog which is key for any business now. I'm sure they'll have an upgrade soon. Great customer service from lightspeed at any time of day with little wait time.

Pros

Easy to use, with minimal website knowledge you can build an online presence from your inventory. Great customer service and IT department.

Cons

Few integrated credit card processing companies to choose from.

Lightspeed seemed like a good solution for my small business after doing some research and speaking with their salesman.

What they don't tell you is that they rush you into a sale with an offer that "expires" in the near future. They don't give you an opportunity to test the product to see if it will work for your business. In our case, we asked very specific questions about the management of multiple repairs for a single customer to which our salesman assured us their product could handle. Unfortunately it could not without adding numerous steps to the process thereby making it extremely inefficient and prone to human error.

Their solution was to use specific functionality like "layaway" to circumvent their own products flow. After several sessions with their orientation specialist (spread out over sever weeks due to their limited schedule), even she said that their product can't really do what we need it to the way we need it to.

During the sales cycle, we told the sales man numerous times that we do not print paper receipts; we email receipts to our customers in order to be more environmentally friendly and therefore do not need/want a paper receipt printer. The salesman "gave" us a cash drawer as a part of our sale but the catch is that you have to have a receipt printer for the drawer to work.

There are several other issues similar to the ones above where we were mislead into paying the upfront fee. Now that we've figured out that the Lightspeed product will not work and we'd like a refund, their customer service is nowhere to be found. They do not respond to email in a timely manner (usually weeks) and do not respond to calls.

I would avoid Lightspeed simply because of their customer service and sales. Their product seems decent enough for the right business but be prepared to be swindled.

Pros

Seems easy to use once setup

Cons

Does not easily handle multiple line items for a single customers. Salesman will tell you that you don;t need all the hardware but you actually do and they'll happily sell it to you. Communications are exceptionally poor once sale has been made. Does not handle customization well.

Advice to Others

Avoid Lightspeed... They will tell you anything they can to close the deal... up to and including outright lies.

We opened a small retail store and in the first 3 months went through 2 other POS systems. We had not chosen Lightspeed initially because of poor reviews. However, after using two other systems which couldn't do half of what we needed, Lightspeed was a delightful surprise. We haven't had any of the problems we had heard about and have consistently had good service and results with the program.

Pros

Flexible, robust. Has ability to do layaway, discounts, full item descriptors.

Cons

Some features must be done in the back office. Layaway can be a little complicated to complete from the sales register.

I started up my retail store from scratch and Lightspeed made it so much easier. The vendor catalog import feature makes finding products a snap, especially for special orders. I can't lose the special orders because they are all computerized and attached to the customer. When I had to go offsite, this cloud based system let me do every transaction I needed to do (sell inventory, email receipts, special orders), it was just like taking the register with me. The system is very intuitive. It takes me about 10 minutes to train someone on the system, even my children (ages 15 and 11) picked it up quickly and can help all my customers. I haven't used the eCommerce feature yet, but it looks promising.
The customer service is spectacular! Firefox had an update that knocked the receipt settings off. I had to call every day for 5 days because what they fixed would reset in the morning. They finally figured out the problem, but every call they were polite, cheerful, and respectful. They didn't talk down to me like some IT do when explaining the setting configuration and even called me on their own to check that their fix had worked. I felt that they cared about my experience and wanted to help me, not just because it was their job to.
