Lightspeed Retail Software

Lightspeed Retail is platform-agnostic, point of sale solution that can be accessed anywhere, at anytime. Lightspeed OnSite is a server-based, retail management solution exclusively for Mac and iOS. Both allow retailers to unify inventory, manage customers, process transactions and dig deep into their store’s analytics.

Multi-store capability keeps inventory synced across all locations, while mobile extensions mean that associates can check on inventory and conduct sales from anywhere in the store via iPad. Retailers looking to expand into e-commerce can also take advantage of Lightspeed’s fully integrated Web store, which handles inventory across in-store and online.

The design-centric software offers large photos to help retailers visually get a handle on their inventory.

With more than 18,000 stores in over 30 countries, Lightspeed’s clients processed over $6 billion in transactions in 2013 alone. The company also has a strong global network of certified resellers, who can meet with retailers one-on-one where they live.

Front end looks pretty. Sales team is helpful in getting you signed up. Lots of deals to entice you to sign up for that year long package. It does actually link your inventory when everything is working properly.

Likes Least

Support. There is none. Sure they have live chat, a call system that will call you back so you don't have to wait on hold, and email help. But the majority of the time no one can actually help you solve your issue. A lot of "we're looking into that" and "I'll let our tech team know" or "browser was your customer using when they were unable to checkout?". Support is terrible.

Cart overselling. Not one, not twice, but 3x cart oversold in the first 7 months of using this POS with web store. They can't tell you why, or fix it, or offer any help. They will ask you what browser your customers were using though.

Orders not downloading from web store so you are actually aware that there is an order waiting to be shipped, as well as the inventory not updating.

Very small maximum # of characters in product descriptions that can display on web store. Hopefully your product photos speak for themselves because no room for in depth explanations, videos, etc.

Email response time. Generally about 3 days. Seriously.

The ridiculous amount of time it took to get the web store to go live and then the week I spent on the phone/live chat/email with support to try and correct issues to that people could actually check out.

The fact that you can't do the same things on the iPad app POS that you can if you're running the POS through your laptop. I can't discount a single product in the app, and discount applies to every product in the sale. Not annoying at all.

Limited customization of web store.

If you are looking for an all-inclusive solution to your brick and mortar POS and online store needs, please look elsewhere. I was enticed by the great looking front end, the dream of all of my inventory syncing between B&M and online orders, and the flashy website and sales staff. I came from Square which is much simpler to navigate, more appealing on the backend, and does not even charge a monthly fee. There are tons of options out there for POS solutions, standalone or including online, I suggest you find a better one.

The only drawback that I see so far is that when you count in the drawer, it doesn't keep count anywhere of the count in, only the total, not a breakdown.

It does not appear that the designers have ever actually worked in the retail business. My biggest complaint is the lack of control in tracking inventory and the two biggest problems are:

1) It has no mechanism to either remove an item out of stock for internal use or for return to a vendor. The options to do so are either to manually adjust the quantity on hand, which means you have no visibility as to why stock has disappeared, or to can "sell" it to yourself, which gives you visibility as to movement, but now you have to adjust your sales reports to remove the fake sales.

2) If you have zero items on hand but attach that item to a sale, it will automatically add the item to inventory rather than recording a negative quantity. This is a problem for two reasons: the first is if an item was sold under the wrong SKU. The wrong SKU stills says zero on hand, but the correct one says you still have it in stock when it isn't. The second problem occurs if an item gets sold before it was received. LS automatically adds an item to complete the sale bringing the quantity on hand to zero, but then, when it gets received, the quantity on hand shows one. The correct solution is for the quantity to go negative, then when the item is received, it zeros out, or you can run a report of negative items so you find the ones that have been sold incorrectly.

Other issues I have is the lack of customizing for reports, they are all canned so I end up running multiple different reports to get the same information I used to get with one report in my old system. The system does not allow for part numbers instead using the product description to identify items. This makes searching for items more tedious, LS's presumption is that you will always have a scanner and a scannable tag on the item but just isn't the case in real life.

Recommendations

Really take the time to do a thorough demo of any product you are looking at. Take the time to think of all the usual and unusual transactions you do on a daily, monthly, and annual basis, and require the vendor to show you how their system supports that.

This is a comprehensive POS, inventory control, and CRM solution for my brick and mortar specialty beer and wine retail shop. Its online component (underutilized by me as most customers just come to the store) is seamless and excellent. Unlike my previous cloud based system, Lightspeed has a no hassle, no cost gift card program, multiple tax rates, multiple discount rates, FIFO inventory, and seamless integration with Mailchimp and other third parties. This is an incredible value. Tech support has been free and usually on top of things. I could go on and on.

Likes Least

The app for older iPads is buggy, so I use the online version for my old iPad. It hasn't been a problem, but the online UI is not as pretty as the app. I would like an Android version of the app as I am not an Apple guy. The webpage templates are not that versatile but that's really a function of cost. I am only going to get so much customization for the price though.

Recommendations

Research POS systems thoroughly before you decide on one. Use free trials, look at other stores which use the same system, call other retailers and see if it's right for your industry and so on. I know that Lightspeed cloud is great for my beer and wine store. I do not know how it would be for a restaurant, quick serve etc. When you have finished researching, do some more research. Once you are wedded to a POS system it is incredibly difficult, time consuming and expensive to change systems. My store is small with only about 700 active SKU's at a time. If you have a bigger store, do a lot of online selling or multiple locations, you need to be very comfortable with your POS system.

I found Lightspeed's system to be way more intuitive than other POS systems I have used in the past. This was really important to me as a business owner, because we are going to have to train employees as well. The hours saved with Lightspeed's interface will help pay for itself. Because it is cloud-based, I can easily log in from home or while away when important things come up.

Likes Least

I can't attach a picture to a customer record. I would also like the ability to include a special order information on a purchase order so I can send this directly to a vendor. Also, better reporting for special orders as we do lots of them. I want to see the money I have coming in in the future, not just closed orders.

Recommendations

Avoid anything that isn't cloud-based. There are a lot of robust systems out there, but many of them require you to download their software and are very clunky and less intuitive to operate. Lightspeed also allows for a monthly subscription, which showed me that they expected you to enjoy using it and that they truly believe in their product.

Lightspeed is created for the modern user, a user used to smartphones, the cloud, and speed. There is nothing old school about this produc. It is entirely "new school" and has all bases covered when it comes to what any modern retailer needs for a POS and Inventory Management system. We find it so intuitive to use and the interface is easy on the eyes and easy on the mind. We got up and running on it with almost zero training, because it was that easy to figure out.

There are a number of major bugs with the system when creating a customer order. Essentially, there is a flaw that will not allow certain steps to be taken. One must log out of Lightspeed and then log back in. This can take minutes and something other POS users on other terminals will need to log out to get this to work. Try telling a retail customer who you are trying to serve that you have to restart your system and do this continuously through the day. Sounds like fun? No it isn't. Lightspeed have just now launched a new update - 2015.1.2.0 (r93) and they've even redesigned their logo. Do you think they've fixed this glaring bug? Nope they haven't. It's been 6 months guys.

Recommendations

Try it for yourself. It would be great if you don't need to create a customer order and your customers are just paying and going.

I made the mistake of selecting a POS system before Lightspeed. I didn't follow my gut. I thought these systems had to be complicated and require lots of training and time to learn. I know stores that spend weeks training their sales employees to ring up a sale before they let them loose. This is the best system I have seen in the 10 years I have been in the furniture business.

Up to the minute accuracy on POS when any information in the backend is changed. I like the professional layout of the iPad Cash Register, the ease of use for casual staff, and the ease of exporting information into QuickBooks.

I don't like that a sale is automatically started when you log in. If you don't make that sale and the iPad goes to sleep, the sale remains open, and a new one opens up when you log in again. It means that many transactions of $0.00 are left open.

Recommendations

I looked into about 10 POS upgrades to my previous system, and this was the best option. It has provided improvements to all areas of my previous system.

They also helped me in integrating LightSpeed with Magento using the LightSpeed magento connector. I have wasted my LightSpeed POS license since 1 year without knowing how to use it effectively. Its really so classic and doubled my organization productivity. Thanks to LightSpeed Ecommerce Retail POS and Radianttech as well. If you people like to configure i suggest Radinttech here. It was intriguing to have a POS system that could communicate directly with a web store and track inventory in both places. The POS system works well enough, although it has its "thoughtless" elements and seems to be designed without ever speaking to a business owner.

Likes Least

Unfortunately this system is full of bugs. They don't seem to have ever spoken with a business owner. The images are far too small, and there are far too few to be of any real use. They cannot be made larger. If you make any cosmetic changes to your site, it will eliminate all tech support, since it is no longer their code. This is a major problem, since their website layout is inadequate, and navigation is restricted. They claim that only backend code eliminates tech support, but I only changed my CSS page to make the welcome page what I needed for my store. I was a professional web designer and know exactly what I'm doing on this point.

When you do reach tech support, they are barely competent. I don't like knowing more about the entire site, code, and troubleshooting than the person on the other end of the phone.

Recommendations

Avoid the eCommerce site at all costs. It is massively expensive for what you are left to deal with.
