Retail Pro contains all the important features for retail management applications: point of sale, CRM, inventory management, merchandising, and accounting. This system has over 35,000 users all across the globe that specialize in every type of retail segment imaginable.

Retail Pro offers a point of sale system with store replenishment capabilities, product return management, and the ability to manage employee hours, attendance, and commissions. Customer information and loyalty can be tracked for marketing purposes, and orders can be placed for both special items and mass stock replenishment.

Retail Pro provides a number of tools for retailers to fine-tune their businesses. Retailers can better manage their stock levels with stock rebalancing, SKU tracking, and item performance metrics. Businesses that take web-orders can use the eCommerce application within Retail Pro to manage Internet sales. All of these initiatives can be measured using the key performance indicator (KPI) reporting within the business intelligence application.

The system is built on Delphi 7 and uses an Oracle 9i databse. Users can access it with a computer running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows 7, and it can be deployed on Windows 2000, Windows XP Pro, and Windows 2003 servers. Retail Pro is offered as an on-premise system.. The Retail Pro Enterprise Integration Manager allows Retail Pro to be integrated with third-party ERP, MRP, and HR systems.

This product is very easy to navigate through. There aren't many ways that you can get lost in the system.

Functionality

I wish there there was a way to export client information and an easier way to filter your view. At times, we input a clients name and it doesn't go straight to that client, even with the filters present.

The quality of the product seems to be par with other programs I have used in the past.

Recommendations

When using customer functions and entering in new clients, it would be easier to just add in new clients without having to input their name twice if they never shopped before. There should be a way that the name stays present.

The product is consistent, which makes it easy to use.

Functionality

It serves our needs now; however, we need to move toward a system that allows for real time information between all stores and corporate. We'd like to put our store inventory up online; however, the data is too stagnant.

Product Quality

It works for us. It's stable at the point of sale and integrates with other aspects of our business.

The user interface is not as graphical and user-friendly as it could be.

Functionality

The product is mature and, as a result, has excellent functionality.

Product Quality

The maturity of the product has worked out most of the bugs. Bugs in newly released software are promptly resolved.

Customer Support

Big Hairy Dog is extremely customer focused and responsive. They have a great relationship with Retail Pro, and in the event that they cannot resolve a problem because of a bug in the underlying code, they typically receive prompt support from the development team at Retail Pro.

The Retail Pro product and Big Hairy Dog are unique in a number of ways:
1) The product has unmatched functionality that allows users to manage just about every conceivable aspect of a retail business (fashion, in our case) in a highly flexible and customized manner.
2) The product is mature and, as a result, is extremely robust.
3) Retail Pro is very active and responsive with their support program. Bugs are addressed in a timely and efficient manner. Extensions to the product occur on an ongoing basis.
4) Big Hairy Dog are an excellent distributor of Retail Pro. They are well established and have a large team of highly skilled professionals providing service and support on the Retail Pro product. Their knowledge and experience in both Retail Pro and POS generally is unmatched.

The user interface of the product could be more intuitive.

Recommendations

Determine your selection criteria against which you want to evaluate the different offerings. Make sure that you are clear on the functions you want demoed by the prospective vendors. Ideally, develop a demo script. Make sure that the product you select is robust. POS is a mission critical system for retail, and no downtime during trading hours can be tolerated.

We have been using the software Retail Pro for about two months now at our single location, which is a Swimming Pool retail store. Since the day we first launched the software, we have had such an easy time conducting business with our vast customer base. Associates was a big part of that! Their training process was not only well-performed, but our teacher made it fun as well!

As a Windows/menu-driven software, I find that most users have a much shorter learning curve and can navigate Retail Pro with relative ease. New hires are quickly brought up to speed as menu formats are clear and well-placed.

Functionality

Retail Pro is well-suited for our POS requirements. Having tried other systems in the past, Retail Pro far exceeds the others through ease of use, dependability, and functionality.

Retail Pro review

Ease-of-use

Retail Pro is so easy to learn that when we have our big Mercy weekend event, we have on average 10 volunteers that have to learn how to run our registers. I can tell you that it takes them no more than five minutes to learn how to navigate through the program and run the register.

Functionality

Retail Pro's functionality is great. We have everything we need at our fingertips.

Product Quality

Retail Pro always feels like it was created just for us.

Customer Support

JD Associates are wonderful they are always there for us. Our questions are always answered in a timely manner. Any time that we have to have technical support either on the phone or in person, they are true to their word in the time that they will arrive and how long the time to get the job done is performed.

Retail Pro with our business partners at J.D. Associates

Ease-of-use

While the front end is easy to learn and pick up, the back end is where there seems to be a black hole of information. How do we configure the system? How do we fix this issue or research issues we're seeing? There is a knowledge base on the Retail Pro site, but if you don't know what you're looking for, it makes it difficult to find a resolution without contacting partners or waiting on a response from Retail Pro themselves.

Functionality

There are things I'd like to see with Retail Pro that aren't currently available. For example, the User Interface is not friendly at all for the actual user. I'm sure it's fine for the developer who designed it, but I would recommend involving an actual user for feedback when you get to the design stage. The front end out of the box configuration has a lot that we don't use and clutters the screens, ultimately making it hard for a user to learn.

Product Quality

The overall quality of Retail Pro is good, but like I mentioned above, I'd like to see it cleaned up.

Customer Support

Again, our business partner, J.D. Associates, is what keeps us with Retail Pro. They are supportive and follow up on issues we find. Without their support, I think we would have a difficult time resolving issues we've found with Retail Pro or customizing it for our needs.

We have been using Retail Pro for a number of years now and have been partnering with J.D. Associates, Leominster, MA since the start. J.D. Associates have helped up with moving us from Retail Pro 8 to RP9, as well as their normal day-to-day support. Because of the uniqueness of our business, we often have odd uses or requests of Retail Pro, but J.D. Associates helps us work through each request and challenge to help us move our business forward.

There are shortcomings with Retail Pro 9 reports. This is a known issue and shouldn't be a surprise. Other challenges we have seen could be due to how our system is configured, but we are working through that.

Recommendations

If I were looking at installing Retail Pro, I would definitely look at the partner who would be supporting me because the software is only as good as those who are supporting it. In my opinion, J.D. Associates has been a great partner for us in the support of Retail Pro, which is what is needed.

The response time from service department is very good. It covers all categories for us. Layaway, special orders, time in/out, etc.

They charge per seat. If you use a main server to control the points of sale, the server is considered a seat. I know it is hard to have a billing structure for different types of companies, but small independents have a tough time.

Recommendations

Make sure that they can service any problems when they come up. Many companies are only available during the normal business week but retail is open seven days a week, early to late. If you have a problem on the weekend and are told to call back Monday morning, it is way too late!

The POS Customer and Inventory sections are all very easy to use.

Solid Retail Pro User

I think the product is very user-friendly, so it's easy to train new staff members.

Functionality

I really like the daily sheets it provides and the amount of information gathered and compiled daily.

Product Quality

I really enjoy using Retail Pro, and I like how it tells me right away if I made a mistake. If I ring something up at the register and it has been tagged wrong, I will know so we can rectify the situation.

Customer Support

OSRS has great customer service and tech support. They have been really helpful with all of our new store openings.

Retail Pro provides a great POS system that allows me to track down inventory in my store and also lets me see instantly what other stores have in stock in case a customer is looking for something I am out of. One Step Retail has provided great support to all of our stores, including the installations for our new stores.

I wish there was a way of detecting when someone does not have enough funds on a prepaid credit card, because we get a lot of tourists in our stores. Sometimes there are a few glitches with the system, but our support is always quick about getting back to me.

Recommendations

I would absolutely recommend Retail Pro because of everything you have at your fingertips. There is so much knowledge to gain through inventory control. I can instantly view the quantity of our products in stock and compare it to other stores so I can let a customer know what's available. Then, if it is not in stock at my store, I can find the location that has it available.

Great Point Of Sale Software

Ease-of-use

The program has a lot of features that can take a while to get configured to your exact needs, but once they are set up, the interface is very user-friendly and easy to learn.

The software allows you to get all the data you need when you need it.

Product Quality

Overall, it's pretty good. There are occasional bugs that pop up, but they are usually resolved on the next update.

Customer Support

Very good. They respond quickly to all issues and have a very knowledgeable support team

The biggest downside to V9 vs V8 is the speed. V9 is significantly slower.

One other big downside to the RPro software is it limits your third-party options. We are stuck using only one CC processor, which ties our hands and limits our ability to get the best possible deal/rates.

Recommendations

Invest the time to do your research. RPro has a lot of features and reporting that I haven't seen in other systems.

It is very functional and easy to use. One of the things that sets us apart from other stores is our merchandise mix; we try to balance traditional and classic playthings with the latest and greatest family trends. Retail Pro aids us in keeping inventory of all of our items so we can easily service our customers.

Functionality

We wanted to evolve from an old fashioned cash register and handwritten paper receipts. Retail Pro allowed us to monitor sales and track our inventory much more carefully.

There is a breadth of software. You can use as many or as few of the features as you want.

Retail Pro v8.6 - great for serious small-to-medium specialty retailers

Ease-of-use

Once trained, the basic operations are simple, but since it seems like everything is customizable, the included documentation is lacking.

Functionality

We got it all up and running, and it integrated with both an accounting software package and website. It's rock solid.

Product Quality

Version 8 is a little long in the tooth, so the latest and greatest in bells and whistles are not there. But what is there has been battle tested for over a decade. We're looking at a v9 upgrade soon.

Customer Support

BHD has really knowledgeable techs. There isn't much they haven't seen.

Retail Pro is highly customizable, powerful, and scalable for small-to-medium businesses with one or more locations. Our support is through Big Hairy Dog, who provides great support with knowledgeable techs and sales staff.

It is not cheap. The licensing and maintenance fee model is cost prohibitive for smaller businesses looking for a simple way to ring sales and track inventory.

Recommendations

If you are a one-store, one-register shop, there are other software packages out there that can serve as a glorified cash register for a lot less money.

But if you are willing to make the investment both in time and resources to take advantage of the wealth of features and customization options, Retail Pro is great for either a small business looking to expand or a medium-sized, multiple-location operation.

Presets are easy to create and use. The touch screen is very helpful.

Customer Support

Other than the training and tech support from our supplier (Big Hairy Dog), there have been some times that return calls are delayed by hours. Email has been our best communication.

We have an awesome trainer, who is fantastic on his followthrough, which is extremely important in the retail business. Their techs are great. The training is amazing. They walked us through everything to set up our initial inventory. They helped us out with our first physical inventory. They are always available. The wait time is minimal. They make sure we are able to run our store.

Functionality

We are able to run three Points of Sale and manage our inventory with such better functionality! That makes our bookkeeping much easier for tracking purposes.

There are a couple of things that I would like to see down the road reports-wise. Otherwise, we are completely happy.

Big Hairy Dog handles our support. They are always there to help in our hour of need. I rarely wait more than 30 minutes to an hour depending on the severity of the issue, although many times, it is handled immediately. I really appreciate that level of customer support. This is what sold us on them to begin with!
