Retail Pro contains all the important features for retail management applications: point of sale, CRM, inventory management, merchandising, and accounting. This system has over 35,000 users all across the globe that specialize in every type of retail segment imaginable.

Retail Pro offers a point of sale system with store replenishment capabilities, product return management, and the ability to manage employee hours, attendance, and commissions. Customer information and loyalty can be tracked for marketing purposes, and orders can be placed for both special items and mass stock replenishment.

Retail Pro provides a number of tools for retailers to fine-tune their businesses. Retailers can better manage their stock levels with stock rebalancing, SKU tracking, and item performance metrics. Businesses that take web-orders can use the eCommerce application within Retail Pro to manage Internet sales. All of these initiatives can be measured using the key performance indicator (KPI) reporting within the business intelligence application.

The system is built on Delphi 7 and uses an Oracle 9i databse. Users can access it with a computer running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows 7, and it can be deployed on Windows 2000, Windows XP Pro, and Windows 2003 servers. Retail Pro is offered as an on-premise system.. The Retail Pro Enterprise Integration Manager allows Retail Pro to be integrated with third-party ERP, MRP, and HR systems.

Retail Pro v8.6 - great for serious small-to-medium specialty retailers

Ease-of-use

Once trained, the basic operations are simple, but since it seems like everything is customizable, the included documentation is lacking.

Functionality

We got it all up and running, and it integrated with both an accounting software package and website. It's rock solid.

Product Quality

Version 8 is a little long in the tooth, so the latest and greatest in bells and whistles are not there. But what is there has been battle tested for over a decade. We're looking at a v9 upgrade soon.

Customer Support

BHD has really knowledgeable techs. There isn't much they haven't seen.

Retail Pro is highly customizable, powerful, and scalable for small-to-medium businesses with one or more locations. Our support is through Big Hairy Dog, who provides great support with knowledgeable techs and sales staff.

It is not cheap. The licensing and maintenance fee model is cost prohibitive for smaller businesses looking for a simple way to ring sales and track inventory.

Recommendations

If you are a one-store, one-register shop, there are other software packages out there that can serve as a glorified cash register for a lot less money.

But if you are willing to make the investment both in time and resources to take advantage of the wealth of features and customization options, Retail Pro is great for either a small business looking to expand or a medium-sized, multiple-location operation.

Presets are easy to create and use. The touch screen is very helpful.

Other than the training and tech support from our supplier (Big Hairy Dog), there have been some times that return calls are delayed by hours. Email has been our best communication.

We have an awesome trainer, who is fantastic on his followthrough, which is extremely important in the retail business. Their techs are great. The training is amazing. They walked us through everything to set up our initial inventory. They helped us out with our first physical inventory. They are always available. The wait time is minimal. They make sure we are able to run our store.

Functionality

We are able to run three Points of Sale and manage our inventory with such better functionality! That makes our bookkeeping much easier for tracking purposes.

Product Quality

There are a couple of things that I would like to see down the road reports-wise. Otherwise, we are completely happy.

Customer Support

Big Hairy Dog handles our support. They are always there to help in our hour of need. I rarely wait more than 30 minutes to an hour depending on the severity of the issue, although many times, it is handled immediately. I really appreciate that level of customer support. This is what sold us on them to begin with!

The POS section is fairly straight forward and easy to use. Our seasonal employees are able to catch on in a matter of days. The behind the scene piece at our warehouse takes a bit more experience, but we have found that our training and support partner has made that training go smoothly.

Functionality

Retail Pro gets the job done quickly, efficiently, and glitch-free.

Product Quality

We are currently on Version 8 and have found that nearly all of the bugs have been worked out. It's a solid product.

Our support is provided through Big Hairy Dog. I cannot say enough positive things about their level of support and training. A++

Our operation is very seasonal, and we gear up from 0 to 100 in a short amount of time. The accuracy the system delivers for inventory management gives us the confidence to make rapid decisions that impact our bottom line. We especially appreciate the level of support that we receive. No software is perfect. However, our experience with Retail Pro has been significantly better then our previous vendor. Our least favorite thing about the software is how it behaves with our unique discount structure. However, we have found ways to make it fit our operation.

Recommendations

If you operate in a seasonal (and remote) environment like ours, it is very important that you find a good support partner. We have found that there is a lot of work behind gearing up for our store openings, and our limitation with dial-up has been a challenge. These were compelling reasons for us to move forward with Retail Pro. Our business model is fairly diverse (not just retail). Retail Pro has been extremely flexible in trying to open up integration opportunities for the other software packages we use.

It is well-laid-out. There is so much training given that gives you all the tools to really run the system.

Functionality

It really is a total package. The front end store employees have an easy, simple-to-follow system that helps them be more efficient to our customers. The back end users have so many great reports and tools to help us run the business and make good, solid decisions based on the facts we rely on.

Quality is top-notch. We run a lot of units, and all perform to a high standard.

Retail Pro is very user-friendly, and it has a training module so new employees can practice before going live if needed.

Enterprise power for small businesses

Since you can customize virtually any screen layout, the complexity is only as high as you make it. POS can be completely simplified for your staff, while the back office can be more data rich.

Functionality

The only missing feature that I would like to see is an ability to calculate the minimum stock required to take lost sales for days out of stock into consideration.

Product Quality

It's completely stable and mostly bug free at this point.

Customer Support

Big Hairy Dog is absolutely one of our favorite business partners. They stand high above the other Retail pro vendors.

The software is packed with features that I have yet to find in other software on the market, including multiple ways of handling employee compensation (eg.-SPIFs, different commissions for different employees), fully customized screen layouts, and most importantly the ability to do quick mass edits using the CTRL+F2 function on the inventory grid.

If you are evaluating RPro, have someone from the sales staff walk you through the use of filters. It is amazing how you can drill down to the most relevant info with just a few clicks.

For our stores, the ease of use comes with the touch screen capabilities and the fast movement between screens.

Functionality

Retail Pro runs in over 100 of our stores, and we use it in Europe and North America, and it serves as a great POS for all of our stores. Again, the ease of use via the touch screen capabilities is one of our favorite features.

Product Quality

The design of Retail Pro is one of the best things we like, and the ability to change the screens as we want to fit to any of our stores' needs, be it in France or Utah. The only thing I would like is an easier way to design a better receipt layout. But, I'm sure Retail Pro is working on that one now.

Customer Support

When I think of the main factors I like Retail Pro, it has to be due to our awesome support from BHD (Big Hairy Dog); they are the best retail vendor partner in the USA who handles Retail Pro. They are 110% committed to customer support and the success of our stores, no matter the issue. They are the main reason I love working with Retail Pro.

The best part about Retail Pro is the user interface with the touch screen capabilities for our stores. It gives sales personnel the ease of access and a touch screen that is fluid and fast to use. The reporting features can be a bit confusing, but with the right support from your retail partner and trainers, these all can be modified to do pretty much anything you need to report with ease. Receipt layout can be a bit challenging, but it gets easier with time as you use it more.

Recommendations

Make sure you know the needs of your stores first. Retail Pro has many features that can be finely tuned but, it helps knowing what you will require far in advance before you launch this POS in your stores.

Look at the back-end data handling of the programs being considered. How fast are commands processed, whether it is a filter or report being run. Also, in reporting, how flexible is the program in modifying and creating reports. Retail Pro v9 with the integrated Crystal reports allows you to create a report on any/all data fields in the Oracle database.

Basically, the software is very user-friendly; however, I still need help with reporting, customer-specific mailings, and adjustments. I think these features could be improved. Perhaps they are with Version 9; we use Version 8.

The product meets Glamour House's needs in virtually every way. I eon't know how we would get along without out. It has paid for itself times over just in the ability it has given us to track client purchases, analyze buying habits, sell more products, manage inventory spending, and improve profitability!

Never really had a quality issue. We have a quality vendor, and Retail Pro is a quality product for sure.

Customer Support

BHD customer support is outstanding! I've never had such a good experience working with an outside service provider, and I have been in management positions in the workplace for over 25 years. I have absolutely no complaints. If they drop the ball (like we all sometimes do), they go all out to make things right.

Hands down, what I like best is that our service is through BHD. I purchased Retail Pro in 2003 and have had bumps along the way (e.g.-hard drive crashes, lost data/backup issues, questions on operation, etc.). Customer support has always gone over and above the call of duty to solve my problems in a friendly, efficient, and cost-effective manner. Also, it is comforting that their support staff have longevity in the company. I also like the intuitive features of use and easy integration with Quickbooks.

I am concerned that at some point they will no longer support Version 8, and Version 8 works just fine for us. We don't want to be forced to buy more than we need.

Recommendations

Contact users before buying. Understand the full workings of the software, reporting, and accounting integration as well as possible before buying and make sure it satisfies your needs.

Retail Pro support comes from third-party vendors. I would highly recommend that you use BHD Information Systems.

The hardware provides lasting, long-term usage. They have a good special customer program. And I like the detailed reports.

Everyone knows what they are talking about with regards to the program and Windows environment.

I'm a managing partner and CIO.

Ease-of-use

Basic "cash-register" functions are a 10/10. Higher level features like reporting, security preferences, polling, ECI Merchandizer, etc are a little more difficult, like a 4 or 5. The whole system averages to a 7/10 in that respect.

Functionality

It does 90% of what we need. The other 10% of the time I run into roadblocks from field character length, eCommerce features, and occasionally the need to add expensive add-ons to make it do what I want.

Product Quality

It's gotten progressively better over the 6 years I've used the software. There will always be bugs in any software, but my experience has been that Retail Pro software has fewer than average "problems". And when it does, there's typically a feature to handle it.

Customer Support

Our customer support comes from Big Hairy Dog in California. I've never used Customer Support direct from Retail Pro. The service and support we've received from BHD over the years has been stellar. They're always there when we need them and willing to help as we've grown as a business. We're extremely happy with our provider.

It does 90% of everything we want & need. Frankly, that other 10% is probably unrealistic without custom programming. We get awesome tech support when needed, and I especially love the live chat feature that lets us ask quick questions. The product is very quick and easy to train an employee on and setting up levels of permission is awesome. We're able to delegate job duties easily with the different features. Receiving is a perfect example. That workstation is set up to be used completely differently than our cash registers. For example, we have three cash registers our of eight total machines running Retail Pro. Each has a unique function, and the software works well in supporting those varied functions simultaneously.

Some of the more intricate details of the software take quite a while to learn. It's easy for an average sales associate to use the main functions, but some of the higher level features get complex. The software can be "quirky" with some old features that were added on to, so there are features that are not intuitive. An example is polling: some things happen automatically and others require initialization. Like every time we add an employee to the system, it's a process to get them into other locations and requires higher-level knowledge.

Recommendations

Don't stop at just the basic features. There are tons of point of sale software solutions out there, and most of them look great to an average sales associate. I think it's important to review the value-add features like reporting capabilities, add-on software options, availability of tech support, etc. Nearly all of the POS solutions I've reviewed are similar for the basic POS functions. Few are similar for the high level features. This is a place where I think Retail Pro excels.

Retail Pro Version 8 Software - POS

Ease-of-use

Version 8 is great for POS transactions, and the ability to update receipts on the fly including the product description. I can typically have a new user trained in a few hours and ready to do most transactions at POS.

One issue with Version 8 is there is no way to show that a coupon was used on a receipt if you enter the dollar amount into the subtotal discount field when cumulative discounting is turned on. The line item discount will be correct, but there is no indication on the receipt that part of the discount came from a coupon.

Functionality

For our physical store needs, Version 8 has been able to do almost everything we have asked it to do. It also helped us streamline building our e-commerce store with the ECI integration piece.

Product Quality

I find the software quality far better than our previous POS software Microsoft Retail Management, aka RMS.

Integration with Quickbooks through account link is great.

There are no major concerns with Version 8. There are a few minor items I have come across in the past few years.

Minor issue 1 with the "AR Updater" plugin. If a customer brings a store charge receipt back and wants to return all or part of the merchandise, do not copy the receipt. You should just scan the items and process a store charge return. The "copying" of the receipt is the issue, it won't update the store charge balance correctly.

Minor issue 2, you cannot take a deposit on a Sales Order with a "charge" tender type. The customer's charge balance will not be correct.

Customer Support

Our support is through a third party, Big Hairy Dog, and they have been great. They have the staff to pretty much answer anything I run into.

No matter how small or big of a question, issue, or project, I can get the help I need with Retail Pro and our integration with the AspDotNetStorefront e-commerce cart.

A time saver would be the ability to save price/cost manager scheduled sales and to be able to repeat the same sale in the future. Currently, you have to do all the same pricing setup again in Version 8.

Recommendations

They will give you references that are similar to your industry. I recommend using them.

We are Unlimited Skate and Snow in Banff/Canmore Alberta - a snowboard shop with a different attitude.

We wanted a point of sale system that was easy to use. It needed to be reliable and also multifunctional with its reporting. Before Retail Pro, we had a non friendly DOS program!

We have been with Retail Pro for 10 years. The implementation was incredible. Their help with the changeover was wonderful. They were friendly, courteous, humorous, and efficient. It took them about 2 days to finalize everything, which was pretty incredible.

Honestly, when we train new people for our team, it takes less than 15 minutes to get them to understand how to use most of the sale portion of the program.

The customer support is great. All of the techs are really helpful, friendly, and patient!
