Square for Retail Software


 

Square for Retail is a cloud-based point of sale (POS) and retail solution for all retailers. Key features include inventory management, customer relationship management, reporting and employee management. The solution comes with built-in payment processing and integration with all Square hardware.

Square for Retail enables users to track, adjust or transfer inventory across all locations. The solution can give automatic alerts for low stock, so users know when to create and send purchase orders to vendors. Items can be searched by keyword or by scanning barcodes.

Square for Retail can automatically create customer profiles with every card transaction and track customer information and purchase history. It can also automatically sort customers into loyal, casual, lapsed or custom groups. Users can then add notes and preferences to customers’ profiles.

Square for Retail is available for purchase on a monthly subscription basis.

Pros

Love that it's easy, intuitive, and adaptable. So many things I can do with it that weren't possible with the old card readers. They always try to stay on top of the curve.

Cons

Realistically, I shouldn't be using it. For a small business, it's expensive. Was also frustrated that they told me my rates would go down once we reached a certain volume level, but they later back tracked and said they couldn't do it.

Our previous credit card processor charged us compliance fee but didn't help us with our compliance issues. They were happy to charge an additional PCI noncompliance fee for more than a year. Switching our four physical locations and website to Square resolved those issues and saved those fees. Square Retail would no doubt help us more with inventory management, but we can't afford the extra monthly cost for the multiple locations. Software Advice and other review sites were very helpful in sorting through the hundreds of options and convincing our board that we could afford to make the switch to Square to help staff reduce time spent to manage both sales and inventory.

Pros

Fairly intuitive and forgiving (can back out of most screens if not sure where to find function you're looking for). Sales and national park visitor center staff really like the system, and have had little difficulty learning it. We have it set up with wi-fi on AT&T U-Verse and satellite internet and on a Verizon wireless-enabled iPad. Offline mode has worked during power interruptions and automatically uploaded sales when back online. Customer support has generally been top notch. Support Center has good information and comments from the Square community, though it can be a challenge to find the answer without fairly extensive searching. The Square stands, compatible printers, and cash drawers were easy to hook up and work well together. Straightforward pricing. Ability to accept multiple forms of payment with the Square chip reader and Virtual Terminal.

Cons

Would be extremely helpful to have searchable, downloadable start-up and user guides instead of having to cut and paste from web pages, which doesn't work well. We had to make a lot of phone calls to tech support during initial set-up, particularly for uploading inventory, because we couldn't find instructions online. Very time-consuming and tricky to upload inventory spreadsheet files that include multiple locations. After all the effort to upload, it appears that each item still has to have inventory tracking enabled manually. We assumed that's why we were entering all the inventory numbers into the spreadsheet. Moving inventory from one location to another also must be done manually. With desktop version of QuickBooks for Mac, Square's daily subtraction of fees for each location's sales vs. all fees charged once monthly by our previous processor has more than quadrupled the time needed to enter sales reports. Switching to cloud version of QuickBooks may help, as transactions can supposedly be downloaded to it. Had to purchase a third-party module to integrate our website's Magento Community ecommerce software with Square, but integration is very incomplete (total charge only is transferred to Square, not items sold, merchandise subtotal, member discount, or shipping charges). We accidentally entered some Virtual Terminal transactions with the wrong location selected and couldn't transfer them to the correct location. Tech support verified that the only option would have been to refund each transaction from the incorrect location and reenter them in the correct one. We bought a recommended scanner but found that we would have to manually replace our existing PLUs with very long barcode numbers for each item to use it.

Square is very user friendly and has a good bit of functionality, including the ability to send invoices, connect to Quickbooks, and create an online store. It works well for my husband's food truck.

Cons

I wish it would withhold taxes for us, and allow us to pay tax directly from the software. We have trouble with customers using the ordering on their phones sometimes...which is frustrating.

Great system. I would definitely recommend it if you are starting a business as there are no monthly fees, you can track your inventory, use it for scheduling and do a whole lot of things in general with it.

Pros

Cons

Pros

The Square register POS is an exceedingly easy to use solution for processing credit card transactions. Since they do not use a separate merchant bank or a gateway, you do not have to worry about calculating interchange plus rates, tier solutions, "claw backs" for premium credit cards and so on. Flat rate, easy to understand process and integrated software and hardware mean that you have one less thing to worry about when trying to run your business.

Cons

If you process more than $ a month in credit transactions, you may get a more competitive rate w a typical merchant bank solution. That being said, Square will offer custom pricing for high volume users after several months when you have a demonstrated high volume account.

I have recommended the SQUARE to all the schools within my district. We use it in our break store and students are using debit and credit cards to pay their school fees.

Pros

3. Very affordable
People/students no longer carry cash. This has increased our break store sales.

Cons

If the internet is down I'm in trouble during break time. I have to take student names and amount of purchase so I can charge them once the internet is back up and running. BUT...it's worth the time and effort.

We are new business owner. The general cost of opening is usually fairly high. The square is affordable POS system with the capabilities of receiving credit cards and track other methods of payment. We have appreciated the quality of this product, and how effortless it is to use.

Pros

There are so many reports giving you a great snapshot! You get a great overview of what is happening in your business. The item entry is a great feature helping to stay organized. The items can all be put in categories that your create. This tailors the experience to your business. You have to option to add sku # and pictures giving you options on how to search for your item. Checking out is easy giving you a split tender option. This tracks all payments making it useful for closing out at the end of the day. Payments are made quickly into your bank account.

Cons

While I still see the item entry as an amazing feature; it does not allow for quantity input which makes it not freat for inventory control. In Canada it does not accept debit or the debit card with the visa features. A secondary device is needed for debit transation. If you go.strickly with the square their is potential to lose sales for not offering this option.

I am lazy and have never actually utilized my square software to its maximum capacity. Also, sometimes the actual swiping device is fickle. I have to swipe several times before it works often. Otherwise, great product, and i hope to learn to use it better!

Square has done wonders for our small business, it has almost everything you would need for a new business but there is somethings I didn't quite like. The system is great but there are some issues. To actually have track your inventory and have it sync up with Quickbooks required us to purchase Quickbooks online to be able to track our inventory and sync our daily sales. It was a little of a hassle but when it all comes down to it this register is great! I just wish it was designed more for a retail store or have that option when ordering the register. I haven't had any other complaints, it works well, user friendly, add as many products/items as you would need. Easy to use checkout for people without a good grasp of technology and how it works. I would honestly say this is a great POS system, very efficient and reliable! Plus you can download the app on your phone and accept payments where ever you are! That is the other great perk of this register!

Pros

Efficient, reliable, on the go app, easy to use, great for any store, easy to track your sales, keep costumer information that are repeats and order frequently, design and layout is simple and very easy on the eyes, it has two versions to layout your items, either a grid or a list so it is a personal preference of which you like to use, deposits your money that night.

Cons

Can't sync with Quickbooks unless you have Quickbooks Online, sometimes takes a while to start up and get going, the card swipe is very picky you HAVE to swipe it straight through or it doesn't accept the card (something that should be resolved soon I hope!) I just wish it wasn't only able to be used on Apple too. I am not a huge fan of Apple products. I would prefer to use a Samsung or Andriod tablet rather then a Ipad, but that is just a personal preference.

From my first try, Square POS was a POSitive experience. A real essential element is to find someone who is already using it and discuss with them their experience, then they may send you a link for an initial discount. Unfortunately, I didn't do this at first and opened an account, only to find the discount was available. Customer service was willing and able to make a quick shift of info and voila, I was linked to my friend and both received the discount. I was totally sold. I purchased the swipe/chip reader that plugs into my phone and it worked every time. I only use it on occasion with clients to process insurance co-pays but it is really easy.

I was not aware that my personal address would show up on a receipt sent to a client but I realized it just after sending it. Fortunately, no problems - so far. I was able to eliminate the address from subsequent receipts.

My company used to use another POS/register system by another big name brand, and I was so let down by how little functionality there was. After switching to Square, there's no comparison. Square Register makes completing transactions a breeze for my employees at the register and our customers. It works well with the bluetooth connected card readers, and works intuitively to make transactions faster. Reporting/tracking is simple and running customized reports is easy to do by location/device/date/etc. Highly recommend!

I've had numerous companies approach me as far as their rates to use them. Square so far has been the best. No one compares, for my small business. There are a few things here and there that I wish would be different, but when I compare what I get for what I pay, I'm very satisfied.

Pros

Invoicing, easy payments, custom register menu.

Cons

It is automatic when two discounts apply, the % will be taken before the $ amount discount. When we offer 10% off to military and they earn a $ discount, it isn't calculated properly for us. So we have to make a few tweaks in order for it to work out. Called customer service and there is no way to change this.
Also, the "Guest" feature was accidentally turned on when I was exploring adding payroll/employees to Square. Once it's activated, it can't be removed. So we now have to hit Guest each time instead of it automatically opening up the Square Register.

Advice to Others

Definitely research your options. For me, Square is the most affordable and lowest cost for what you get. Overall, very happy with it.

I enjoy using Square, especially the function that allows you to still use cards if wifi is down. The one thing that was difficult was actually sliding the card through the square reader... if it wasn't exactly perfect, the payment won't go through.

We used square register for a drive-through coffee stand. It is intuitive and quick. Two great features for a drive through. It's record keeping and inventory abilities were lacking. Specifically, I wish there was a good way to utilize discounts or coupons but track them. They would easily apply but there wasn't a way to report on how many or which were applied.

Card readers were inconsistent at best and it lacked a good reporting system.

We spent several years using a competitor's machines - and when we finally switched to Square, we loved it (and still do) - a great way for us to collect payments from our customers, whether it be in person or over the phone, or paying online with an invoice.

Our business uses Square Register when our internet for debit is down. It's is very handy since it is so small and it's is very simple and straightforward.
