Windward System Five is a complete point of sale suite. Among other features, the program provides a Signature Capture option that helps minimize duplicate invoices and paperwork, POS barcode support that integrates with most scanners on the market, and the option to add or subtract “soft switches” that allow users to customize the program for their specific business practices.
For example, furniture store owners can add the Kit System feature to their program to sell collections of items all at once, while an automotive shop can track labor and mechanic hours.
All versions of Windward System Five are able to document inventory movement between store locations, and users can also integrate the program with their online stores via the WeCommerce tool.

We have been using System 5 since 2003. The system has scaled to our operation as we grow. The accounting side is robust and handles all our AP- AR- and General Ledger needs. Purchasing is fully automated. Billing customers can be fully modified with "Types" and "subTypes" to keep the status of orders updated and classified. Our inventory and product locations have been controlled and managed with the Advanced Inventory Control. The system is constantly being improved with fixes and new features multiple times per month. The database is rock solid. After 14 years, we never have had data corruption requiring the loading of a backup. All our employees depend on the info from system 5 to make decisions and give customers information. The ability to customize and provide information to users is endless and grows each year. We have used the barcode function and have 40,000 SKUs barcoded and labeled. We have even barcoded our rental equipment. We rely on this system for everything and for 14 years it has been bulletproof. Because we sell, service and rent serialized equipment, the "UNIT" way of handling things is great. Provides cost, service and income information.

Probably not really a con But there are so many features available, it take some time to learn and put them into daily practice. The rest are just enhancements we'd like to see !! First, We would like to see the RMA system simplified. Second, we would like to see the E-commerce platform developed more. We are using it now for our website, but we would like to see more features and search options. Third, we would like to see the Timecard function developed and enhanced. Fourth, we would like to see the offering of more credit card processing options. Fifth, we would like the ability to attach PDF's to items, instead of JPG. But all in all, the system works really well!

bad company to deal with, we spent over $30,000 and after several months of trying to go live and we had to suddenly purchase more software from them and we decided to pull the plug..... we saw no future in dealing with this company buyers beware ...... i have this complet system i will give you for free..... if it works for you and you like it then pay us half !!
do not buy a complete system from them no matter what only buy 1 license and make sure implementation and everything goes well before do the whole thing

It is easy to use for basic POS.
Reports area is pretty basic.
There is no "smart search" for inventory.

I like the auto data up loads for inventory. I like the adjustability of all the categories of forms and labels, such as invoices, purchase orders, packing slips, inventory tags, delivery tickets, etc. we can utilize and customize to suite all kinds needs for many different aspects, and situations. Being able to use the tag-a-long kits for suggestive selling, helps out the sales staff considerably, gives them that extra help in making their quotas and the don't have to remember to ask each customer, the suggested add-on items pops up on the invoice and forces them to ask. The sales staff loves the ability to bring up all their open invoices at one click. They love the ability to prioritize estimates for their follow ups. I love the pop up tasks, I can assign tasks to specific employees for a specific day and time to pop up, to remind them to get it done. Using system batch purchasing really saves a lot of time. Using alternative vendors for the same products helps with our inventory management. We have a repair department, sometimes the sales people will help out on the repair bench and the "technician's time clock" works well for them when they get call back to the sales floor in the middle of their repair and then come back later to finish, that may happen several times in the course of one repair depending if the time it takes for completion. Using this "technician's time clock" makes it easy to track their time for the repair fees. System 5 is such an integral part of our day to day functions, we take a lot of it's features for granted, it is hard to think of all the good things it does for us to make our lives easier.
I think the data up loads can function easier, be less complicated. We don't use the accounting part of the program. We use QB for our payroll and it will integrate with System 5 so that is good. There are more aspects of the program I like to be using and I wish the learn curves would be easier. We have an extra large amount of inventory and data stored in the system, since we have been using it since 2008. When generating reports or gathering information, the delays to the system or the machine's think processes, are way too long for me, before the abort button shows up, if it shows up at all or the option to quit the process and try another way. Again think of what I like least is difficult to do because we always find a work around to fulfill our needs.
Shopping for point of sale/data entry soft ware is a daunting task, I don't wish it on anyone. To start I make a couple of lists. First, list of all the most import thing things you can't live without in your day to day business software. Next list all the thing that would be nice to have, you wish list. Then show your lists to Windward make them show you the complete workings of how each of your must haves can be accomplished with the system. Next make them show you the complete workings of how your wish list can be achieved. They will do all that for you. If you find that Windward fits your particular needs then go forward after you are up and working then you can learn all the rest of what it will do. Don't try to learn it all in the beginning you will make your self crazy, I'd just focus on your current needs and after you are up and going than you can adapt to utilize all the rest of their functions. Their 24hr help technicians are very good to work with, I've found that if I give a detailed description of what problem I'm having to the tech desk, 90% of the time, they will steer the technician that best know that issue and will call back and give complete dial-in connected help, along with training, so I'll be smarter next time, and can fix the problem myself. If I have any other issues that the tech can't deal with, my account manager, always gets me the best solutions. I love the ability to using the training along side the real program. It is great for new employees as well for us old timers who are doing a new steps or steps that we may not have used in a while and we are unsure if we will be doing it correctly. So with the training we can play all we want with out messing up any of the real live data. Depending on how many newbies we have I'll copy over the live data to training once week or each evening when we go home and it is ready for them to play with in the morning.

The Sales person reported they wanted to break into the firearms trade. He was polite and tried to answer our questions.
The reports compared to quick books had to be written as in by the company. We could not get lists of our Payable, Receivables and sales tax reporting were major problems. Support once started was moved off shore and was even worse.
Use a mature product like quick books. When we went back to QB we found add on apps that could process our on line orders cleaner and faster.

Excellent customer support 24/7. A product that is scalable to your business. One of the few softwares that have a stand-a-lone ability that allow sales and lookup when the main server is offline or unavailable. Inventory orders in cases or singles by multiple suppliers with multiple part numbers and UPC codes for a single item. Capable of printing price tags on the fly when receiving. Easy lookup of products at the POS terminal by description, barcodes, serial numbers, etc. (Think about a phone caller asking for an item that is not in your hand, no numbers available and you need to quote the price.) Easy Purchase ordering. Easy resorting of POs in a fashion that matches the packing list. Complete control of forms, receipts, printers, slip printers, faxes etc. Multiple price groups and quantity price levels allowing maximum flexibility to different retail environments. Matrix pricing, kit pricing (both dynamic and static) with prices broken out or just single line on receipts. This software is our forth in 30 years and in our use since 2003. Regular updates and revisions are available to keep it fresh and up to date with changes in the ever changing retail industry. This is a very robust software and does far more than given here.
Back office reporting is probably the weekest area. However, custom reports are available and creatable. If you are looking into any software you should have a list of what you need to know daily, weekly and monthly and have it demonstrated to you. Another area is handling price protection from manufacturers. It is not easy to drop cost on items that receive price protection. It can be done but is time consuming.
80 percent of business is the same. Figure out the 20 percent that of your business that really is important and make sure it works for you. The stand-a-lone terminals was very important to us as a retail store because you can not afford to lock the doors when the terminal looses communication with the server. Something that will happen to everyone at times. We also get large orders in of items. Checking in a purchase order with 300 lines and many boxes has been cut down by 90 percent with tag printing as you shoot bar codes and the system finds the item on a purchase order, prints tags as needed, advances to next item as you shoot. Very little keyboard interaction. This was a huge change in the software from 2003 that was suggested by us and then produced by Windward staff. Again, does the company listen? YES!
