BrightPay Software

BrightPay is an on-premise payroll solution built for small businesses in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Features include flexible payment schedules, customisable additions and deductions and automated HMRC payments, among others.

The BrightPay user interface makes payroll simple by giving visual priority to common payroll tasks, such as finalizing and exporting payslips, and showing or hiding various features depending on their relevancy to the user. The platform also scales so users can run unlimited payments, additions and deductions for an unlimited number of employees. BrightPay’s flexibility also allows users to run multiple payment schedules at the same time.

Full support for qualifying pension schemes from the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST), NOW:Pensions, The People’s Pension and Scottish Widows is available in BrightPay. Once pension schemes are set up, employees can automatically enroll. Users can also process opt-out requests and issue contribution refunds.

BrightPay is compatible with any Windows computer and full HMRC recognition ensures calculations are completely accurate.

Absolutely brilliant value.

Pros

Incredibly easy to use. I use the Mac version. After a year struggling using HMRC PAYE Tools this was a complete relief. Really quick and intuitive even for the novice at payroll. Easy reports. Very easy to send RTI reports to HMRC. Customer support very good via email.

Cons

Obvious help or a help button while using Brightpay is missing. However there are hints, and I have found a good help section on the website.

We've been using BrightPay for over 2 years now for our 30+ employee payroll, having switched from Sage Payroll which we'd been using for 10-15 years. We have had no reason whatsoever to rethink that decision and have been really impressed with BrightPay.

I have been using it for about 3 years. We are a small charity with 1/2 employees. The fact that it is free to small users is a big bonus. We could not afford a paid product.

Does what it says on the tin.

I only have clients with one or two employees and once set up the operation of the system is extremely fast. It is possible to calculate wages and submit them to HMRC in less than 10 seconds.

Pros

Speed and ease of operation. Friendly and helpful staff when phoning.

Cons

The free version is only available for one client which at my end of the market means that it is not cost effective to have a bureau licence. I would suggest that the free version should cover, say, a maximum of 3 clients with 3 staff or less or even consider a "small bureau" licence in the region of, say £60 + Vat for this.

I absolutely cannot say enough how good this is- I panicked with auto enrolment after using basic tools for years - I tried various other payroll software and found them complicated and even more stressful - Brightpay was a breeze and I love it and cannot recommend it enough- my only regret is not having used it a long time ago - Brightpay is my friend!!!!!

Pros

Ease of use, no complicated drivel! I found it so user friendly!!

Cons

Nothing!!

Great payroll software and not just for payroll bureaux

Value for Money

As a motor dealership with around 80 staff, in multiple departments - sales, service, parts, forecourt, admin and accounts, our payroll is fairly complicated. We were previously using a bureau but wanted to bring our payroll back in-house. We were able to import our employees and payroll data and the whole process has been much more straightforward than expected. You'd think it would be hard to love payroll software, but it really is a delight to use.

Pros

Incredible value for money. Beautifully written. Fully featured, with RTI and Auto-enrolment. Ability to email payslips or use a cloud self-service portal. Ability to email pension letters. Built in report writer.

Cons

Too easy to change addition/deduction descriptions and then the reporting doesn't include them. No nominal journal available, although the comprehensive reporting makes that a minor issue. Some features are hard-coded to the minimum legal levels - e.g. holiday pay, so it is difficult if you are a generous employer.

Advice to Others

If you want to report on additions and deductions, you seem to have to create them and make them available to all employees and be very careful not to change description during payroll input.

I used the free payroll software previously offered by HMRC, however when he new regulations regarding pensions came into play I had to source an alternative for our charity. I am very pleased with my choice which offers many features and reports that make my task so much less onerous.

Pros

Layout, availability of options and reports.

Cons

The reports were not that easy to locate at first.

Advice to Others

Try it. You won't be disappointed.

I have to run a payroll for a very small charity as a volunteer. I need it to be very easy and fast to use and it must provide me with all the information I may need. I selected BrightPay, as I liked the name and the appearance of the website. With no experience to call on I had to feel positive about the product, I went for. I was correct and it has been so simple to use and when a problem has arisen I have got prompt support and the problem has been solved. I also took the webinar on Auto-Enrolment which has stopped me being apprehensive of dealing with that topic next autumn.

Pros

Quick and easy to use with a great support team if they are needed to give prompt advice.

Cons

I honestly have not found anything yet.

Advice to Others

I doubt if you will find better.

Value for Money

Simple and straightforward to install and use [unlike many of the larger competitors] it contains the majority of functions required by most payroll departments. It is so easy to add extra payments or deductions without lots of messing and links. There are so many facilities It would take a week to list them all. A brilliant top value pack.

Pros

Everything is built in - it is so easy to use
There is no charge for charities and super small businesses that wish to run their own payroll.

Cons

I can't think of any problems - they have all been ironed out over the past few years.

Advice to Others

If you want an easy straightforward piece of kit, this is the one to go for. Whether you are a 1-man-band or a large corporate it should handle your requirements. Well worth consideration.

THE CALENDER DOES NOT CALCULATE TRUE HOLIDAY PAY FOR EMPLOYEES NOT WORKING A FULL YEAR OR STARTING OR FINISHING
BEFORE THE YEAR END

EXAMPLE WILMA SCOTT
AN EMPLOYEE WORKS PART TIME 4 DAYS PER WEEK
HER EMPLOYMENT START DATE WAS 17TH AUGUST 2016
HER EMPLOYMENT ENDED ON 22ND JANUARY 2017
COMPANY HOLIDAYS RUN FROM 6TH APRIL EACH YEAR
EMPLOYMENT LENTH 22 WEEKS

NO MATTER What YOU CLICK ON THE CALENDER IT SHOWS HER AS HAVEING 22.4 DAYS HOLIDAY
MANUALly I HAVE CALCULATED SHE IS ENTITLED TO .43 DAYS HOLIDAY PER WEEK AS SHE HAS WORKED FOR AROUND 22 WEEKS
THE CALENDER SHOULD SHOW HER DAYS ENTITLED TO AS 9.69DAYS FOR THE PERIOD OF TIME SHE WAS EMPLOYED

Pros

Easy to use
Good support
Good value for money

Cons

DOES NOT CALCULATE TRUE HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT

So glad I changed to BrightPay

Value for Money

As a self-employed Farm Bookkeeper/Secretary working for a number of businesses, I've used a couple of different payrolls over the years and recently came across BrightPay when looking for a payroll that dealt with pension auto-enrolment seamlessly with out costing a fortune, unlike the payroll program I was using. I found it relatively easy to change over midyear and have now converted several of the farms where I work. I initially talked to some of the BrightPay staff at a seminar for bookkeepers and they were very helpful; I've only had to contact the helpline once during conversion and they were brilliant. The online documentation and video tutorials are a great help, clear and easy to follow. I love the way you have a visual flag that the RTI and Pension return need to be sent - something that was easy to miss on my old software if you got interrupted by phone or someone coming into the office during the payroll run. Option for cloud backup so can access data from a different location and still run payroll if snowed in and can't get to the office!

Pros

Visual flag that RTI & Pension submissions need sending. Easy to use. Great value for money. Option for cloud backup so no worries about loosing data.

Cons

On fortnightly pay can only enter 1 x fortnightly figure - the staff are used to seeing 2 x weekly figure on payslip.

Advice to Others

If converting mid-year it takes a little longer to import data and check everything agrees than you think it will. If on weekly or fortnightly pay tie in conversion with tax month end.
