Long Term Xtraction User
We have used Xtraction for 4+ years having bought it when Hagrid Solutions was the owner before it was acquired by LANDesk. We have found it to be one of the easiest products to implement, use, and maintain of any products we have so much so that it has become the bar in which other products get compared to on easy of implementation, upgrade, and use. ("They say it's easy, but is it as easy as Xtraction?" is a regular comment.) The product is effectively a simplified version of a BI tool: dashboard and reporting. The way it accesses data is straightforward: SQL queries to other databases that support ODBC connections. Its architecture is simple to understand: front end app server communicates with a backend database server to store its config information. The client is browser-based Flash (it'll be nice when they migrate to HTML 5). It does have some limitations as compared to Cognos or BOXI particularly on advanced report layouts, but we find that the amount of time required to develop and maintain such reports in those tools requires significantly more staff than what we use to support Xtraction.
PROSEase of implementation, customization, maintenance, and use.
CONSLimitations in some of the advanced report layouts.

Xtraction - a huge time saver
Xtraction was easy to install and 99% of what we needed (or anyone) is ready to go out of the box. In order to report against various customized fields (the other 1%) I was able to figure out how to make the required configuration changes to the "data model" and if I can do it anyone can. Plus Xtraction reports can easily be accessed by others whenever they need to see something, they can modify date ranges, export, etc. I can even schedule reports to run at specific times/dates which are then emailed out or exported to a shared folder, this is great for managers looking for a quick status update. In the past, this sort of stuff was something I would have to manual execute with Crystal (Business Objects) and wasted my time. Plus I can create a report in minutes, that same report would take an hour to more with Crystal.
PROSIt works, easy to maintain, runs on a virtual server, and I can quickly create reports with ease.
CONSWhen Xtraction was bought out by Landesk the support seemed to slip a little. Perhaps there was a learning curve and now things are better.

Functional and Convenient
Creating reports on the fly.
PROSEase of use when creating reports using the web front end. Great looking reports Fantastic graphical representation of data
CONS* Using the Web front end there is no way to filter or search for a column/field you want to add. If you have a 100 fields, then you have to manually scroll down and look for each one. * The Data Model Editor where you build your field list needs a lot more work to enable a better user experience. * The Scheduled Tasks section is the bit that will make me rewrite all of my existing reports in SSRS and get rid of Xtraction. This section has been designed for someone that has a few (less than 10 reports) in total. If you have a lot of scheduled tasks there is no easy way to find a task, and when you run the tasks it disappears from view and you have to go search for it to see if it worked. Failed tasks needs to be reset before they work again, and they fail sometimes without any apparent reason. You can also only run one report at a time in this section. Now if you have a few scheduled tasks failing and you need to rerun each of them individually, and each time you run a task the list in front of you scrambles and the task you ran disappears then you have a nightmare managing this. With tasks failing regularly this is an unnecessary admin nightmare.

Xtraction -- Great for Dashboards...If that's what you like.
Although I like the application on the whole there are a few things that could be better about this product. It could be a little more easier to use. If you do not have much reporting experience this application can be challenging. It could also be more report friendly...the premise of Xtraction is that it is dashboard intensive. If that is what you want is dashboards...this is definitely the best tool out there for that but if you want to create reports easily...It's not going to happen. Upper Management is very impressed with it's graphical capabilities but when it comes to comparative and analytical reporting this tool fundamentally lacks the capability.
PROSThe ability to create dashboards
CONSThe inability to do comparative and analytical reporting or create reports where you can create rows/columns and drag/drop results. It is very hard to create queries using this application and report builder is hard to figure out.

Great Tool for Service Management Reporting
Xtraction is a great solution that provides real-time and historic data from several tools utilized by our IT organization. We use it heavily with both our ITSM and ACD systems to gain better insight into our environment, which allows us to improve our performance as well as our tactical and strategic decisions. The ability for self-service reporting is also extremely valuable and greatly reduces the overhead required to deliver actionable information to the other teams.
PROSEase of use and rich feature set.
CONSIt would be nice to see continuous development on existing modules that have been purchased and for this to be able to be implemented in a way that would not impact custom data model modifications.
