## Reviews summary

- Overall rating: 4.3/5
- Total reviews: 8,518

### Secondary ratings

- Ease of use: 4.2/5
- Customer support: 4.0/5
- Value for money: 4.2/5
- Functionality: 4.3/5

### Rating distribution

- 5 stars: 4,841 reviews (57%)
- 4 stars: 2,492 reviews (29%)
- 3 stars: 721 reviews (8%)
- 2 stars: 196 reviews (2%)
- 1 star: 268 reviews (3%)

### Most mentioned pros

- Not only is creating invoices easy to navigate for the user, but clear, easy-to-read records are kept, making it easy to track customer history (paid invoices, overdue invoices, etc.) and pull financial reports.
- It keeps all data organized in one place, and the ability to track income, expenses, and payments in real time makes running the business much easier.
- I have integrated QBO with external platforms like PayPal which streamlines the entire process of reporting, invoicing and payment gateway.

### Most mentioned cons

- I've used QuickBooks Online for my business because it's essentially the industry standard, but it often feels like a product that hasn't kept pace with its rising subscription costs. While it provides the core accounting functions I need, recurring connection issues with financial institutions, occasional backend glitches, and poor customer support create unnecessary work.
- One of the biggest challenges was the inability to integrate or reliably connect with our Vanguard accounts, which made tracking investments and reconciling balances more manual and time-consuming.
- The absence of comprehensive inventory control tools, including robust barcoding functionality, represents a substantial impediment to efficient and precise stock management within QuickBooks Online.

Overall, my experience with QuickBooks Online has been positive. It's user-friendly, reliable, and makes managing accounting tasks such as invoicing, expense tracking, bank reconciliation, and financial reporting much more efficient. While there are occasional issues with customer support and pricing, it has been a valuable tool for managing our business finances.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 3/5
- Customer support: 2/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

QuickBooks Online is easy to use, cloud-based, and allows me to access our accounting from anywhere. I also like its invoicing, expense tracking, bank reconciliation, and reporting features, which help streamline our day-to-day bookkeeping.

#### Cons

The customer support can be slow at times, and some advanced features require higher-priced plans. It can also become expensive as you add users, and occasional updates change the interface, making common tasks harder to find.

#### Reasons for choosing QuickBooks Online

We considered alternatives such as Xero, FreshBooks, and Sage Business Cloud Accounting. We ultimately chose QuickBooks Online because of its ease of use, strong reporting capabilities, integration options, and widespread adoption among accounting professionals.

#### Pros

Offers rich overall feature set, and although it can be difficult to use, the recently released update makes it somewhat easier to navigate. I appreciate the support QuickBooks Online provides. Time entry is straightforward. However, attempting to run more complex reports and analyses is challenging.

#### Cons

Sometimes it's very slow. It seems this was a problem with the implementation. The user interface looks outdated but it does what it needs to.

#### Reasons for switching to QuickBooks Online

Performance speed was my biggest turn off, but we don't worry no more, QuickBooks Online is the real deal.

HORRIFIC! That is the best description I have. We have had issue after issue and they do not resolve anything! We have had our account hacked (on their end), we are currently locked out of direct deposit after verifying our account more than 5 times, our office manager submitted a ticket 4 weeks ago because they blocked her laptop from accessing QBO after the hack and were supposed to remove the block. Shall I continue??

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 1/5
- Value for money: 1/5
- Customer support: 1/5
- Functionality: 1/5

#### Pros

I liked that the software was intuitive, at first it seemed like this was going to be a great switch from the desktop version to the online version. Boy were we wrong!

#### Cons

We switched from the desktop version of QB in January to QB online and have had nothing but issues since. First thing was someone hacked our account and tried to pay themselves over $300k, thankfully we caught this before the bank approved the transactions and we immediately reached out to QBO just to be told to "wait and see". We were supposed to hear back from the fraud department and did not, apparently the first person we spoke to initially never even submitted the ticket for this! We spent the next week talking to different people who never really helped but just made things worse. They did finally submit a ticket which locked us out of our account for over a week, which if that was all it would have been fine. During our lock-out they were "scrubbing" our account??? We had our IT contractors look through all of our devices and found nothing on our end, plus we have excellent security on all of our hardware and in the past 22 years have NEVER had any issues whatsoever. Once we were allowed back in they put a block on our AP & Payroll coordinators laptop so she was not able to log back in through her laptop, and had to reach out over 3 weeks ago to get the lock removed which still to this day has not happened and they have not yet reached out to her so she has been having to use 2 laptops for weeks now which is super inconvenient. This is not even the worst part, after we finally got back up and running after they scrubbed our account it has been one thing after the other. We had to go through verifying all of our information again to be able to access our QBO, then over the last week and a half they continue to say they need more information. Our [sensitive content hidden] has sent his ID three separate times, bank statement, federal id info, phone bills, letters from our bank, to "verify" and they told us it was all good and then lock us out of payroll so now we have to pay all of our employees by paper check which is not how we are set up. They did not tell us they locked us out, they just did it and when we went to process payroll Monday we got a message that we are locked out and they need to verify AGAIN!!!!!! They say they have sent emails which they have not, they said they sent micro-transactions to our bank to verify and they have not! When does it end??? When we have to switch systems I guess because this is so ridiculous! This whole thing has been a nightmare not to mention expensive as our admin team has spent countless hours on the hold or talking to their employees who don't know things they should and now this, it is one thing after the other and we are at our wits end! Everyone said switching was the way to go and would be so much better! It has been horrendous to say the least and there is no end in sight! Do NOT GET QUICKBOOKS ONLINE! You will regret it!

#### Reasons for switching to QuickBooks Online

We were told that QBO was the best out there and would make our work so much easier. It has done the opposite

### Does what you want, and they'll listen to feedback too

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 3/5

- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Fairly straightforward, being able to send invoices directly and provide direct access for the accountant to pull the reports needed for tax time. No need for me to send anything, it's all right there. I liked how I was able to find something available in the US that wasn't working in Canada, and their engineers actually dug into it and found a resolution. Big points to them for that.

#### Cons

QBO is fairly pricey for what it does. You'd think with the extra fees they have on payment processing etc, they'd lower the subscription tiers.

#### Reasons for choosing QuickBooks Online

Took the advice of my accountant + the payment processor I used only had one integration set up

Overall, my experience with QuickBooks Online has been positive. I appreciate its convenience, accessibility, and helpful features, but I still prefer the desktop version for its functionality, workflow, and the way it handles certain tasks. The desktop version feels more familiar and efficient for my needs.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 3/5
- Customer support: 3/5

#### Pros

What I liked most about QuickBooks Online was its ease of use and accessibility. It made it simple to manage finances, track expenses, create invoices, and access important information from anywhere. The automation features and clear reporting tools helped save time and made staying organized much easier.

#### Cons

The subscription fees can add up, especially for small businesses or users who only need a limited set of features. Some essential tools and advanced functionality require higher-tier plans, which can make the overall cost feel less competitive.

#### Reasons for switching to QuickBooks Online

End of life for desktop support - we did not want to switch.

Once you are beyond the basics, you may have difficulties setting up invoices and reports in full custom form. However, there are still modification which can serve large portions of needs.

#### Cons

Things can be problematic with errors that don't go away after fixes. Sometimes basic Excel is more efficient, depending on what you require and what the government requires.

### Keeps our VITA program finances organized and audit-ready

QuickBooks Online has helped us keep the VITA program's finances clean and audit-ready, which is exactly what you need when you're delivering free tax services to the community and reporting back to funders. It's not a perfect fit for every nonprofit use case but it covers the core needs well enough that we've stuck with it. With a little patience during the learning curve it becomes a reliable part of how we manage the program.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 3/5

#### Pros

For our VITA tax program , QuickBooks Online has been a solid tool for keeping the financial side of free tax preparation services organized and accountable. Being able to track income, expenses, and reporting all in one place makes a real difference when you're running a grant-funded program. The cloud-based access means our team can get to what they need without being tied to a specific machine, which matters a lot during tax season when things get hectic. Financial reporting is straightforward enough that pulling together the numbers we need for program oversight doesn't turn into a whole project.

#### Cons

The subscription pricing feels steep, especially for a nonprofit running a free community service program where every dollar of overhead matters. Some of the more nuanced accounting features have a real learning curve and it's not always obvious where to go when something doesn't behave the way you expect — support can be hit or miss depending on who you get. It would also be nice if the nonprofit-specific features were a bit more built out rather than feeling like an afterthought bolted onto a small business product.

I am beyond frustrated with QuickBooks' rigid and illogical customer service policies. My account was suspended due to an expired credit card. When I tried to log in to update my billing and proactively downgrade my subscription from their expensive tier to a $410/year plan, the system locked me out and refused to let me change plans without first clearing the balance of the old, higher rate. I spoke with three separate levels of customer service supervisors, and they all told me the exact same unacceptable policy: the only way to reactivate my account was to pay the full $1,242 renewal, and then wait around for a refund of the difference. Essentially, they are holding small business accounts hostage, forcing customers to float them over $800 in unwanted funds just to fix a payment method and change a plan. Forcing a customer to pay for a tier they explicitly stated they do not want, under the promise of a future refund, is terrible business practice and a complete lack of customer support flexibility. Fix your software loops and empower your supervisors to solve basic account adjustments.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 1/5
- Value for money: 1/5
- Customer support: 1/5
- Functionality: 1/5

#### Pros

Terrible software setup, auto-renewal issues, holding small business accounts hostage, and a lack of customer service to resolve the problem.

#### Cons

Overall, my experience with QuickBooks Online has been very positive. The platform is easy to navigate, reasonably priced, and provides strong reporting tools that give clear insight into financial data. While I don’t currently utilize the invoicing or time tracking features, the bill pay functionality has been especially useful and has worked very well for our needs. I would be interested in learning more about the time tracking and attendance features and how they could support our operations. There are occasional minor bugs, but they are typically resolved quickly with a simple refresh or re-login. Overall, it’s a reliable system that supports our day-to-day operations effectively.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

QuickBooks Online is easy to navigate and very user-friendly. We were initially set up by our payroll/tax provider, who continues to be a helpful resource when needed. Customer support is also easy to access directly through the platform. The pricing is reasonable for the features it offers, and one of the standout aspects for me is the reporting, which is clear, flexible, and very useful.

#### Cons

Every now and then I run into small bugs, like duplicate charges showing up when viewing accounts. It won’t let me record both, which is good, and usually logging out and back in fixes it.

#### Reasons for switching to QuickBooks Online

The setup was pretty complicated, and we were manually entering all transactions. This was a few years back, and we ended up moving to QuickBooks for an easier workflow.

### An Essential Tool for a Remote Accounting Practice

My overall experience with QuickBooks Online has been very positive. It has allowed me to create a lifestyle business by giving me the flexibility to work remotely and serve clients efficiently from anywhere. At the same time, it has helped push my career in accounting forward by supporting advisory work, improving collaboration with clients, and streamlining day-to-day workflows.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

What I like most about QuickBooks Online is the remote access, which allows me to work from anywhere in the world. Being cloud-based makes it incredibly flexible and practical for modern accounting and advisory work. Additional things I really appreciate about QBO include: Real-time collaboration – Multiple users (clients, bookkeepers, and accountants) can work in the file at the same time without version issues. Automatic bank and credit card feeds – Transactions import daily, saving significant data entry time and reducing errors. Strong integration ecosystem – QBO connects easily with payroll, payment processors, inventory apps, CRM tools, and tax software. User-friendly interface – The layout is intuitive, making it easier to train clients and review their books efficiently. Anytime access to financial reports – Profit & loss, balance sheets, and custom reports are available instantly, which is great for advisory and decision-making. Secure cloud storage – No worrying about lost files or local backups; everything is stored securely online. Scalability – QBO works just as well for startups and small businesses as it does for growing companies with more complex needs. Mobile app functionality – The mobile app allows quick checks, invoicing, and receipt capture on the go. Automatic updates – No manual software updates; new features and improvements roll out seamlessly.

#### Cons

What I like least about QuickBooks Online is that it has undergone a lot of changes over time. While updates and new features can be helpful, frequent changes to the interface and workflows can sometimes slow things down and require retraining or adjustment. That said, these changes are clearly aimed at improving functionality and modernizing the platform, and I’m hopeful they will ultimately turn out for the best as the product continues to evolve.

#### Reasons for switching to QuickBooks Online

I wanted to work remotely and not have to login to remote sign ins on a desktop. It allowed me to take on more clients and was easier to have all the clients in one browser.

While it provides the core accounting functions I need, recurring connection issues with financial institutions, occasional backend glitches, and poor customer support create unnecessary work. #### Pros

QuickBooks Online is widely accepted by accountants and integrates with many third-party platforms. It offers a solid set of accounting features, financial reporting, invoicing, and bank transaction management. For small businesses, it can handle most accounting needs without requiring advanced accounting knowledge.

#### Cons

The platform feels increasingly expensive for what it delivers. Bank and credit card accounts frequently disconnect for no apparent reason, and reconnecting them can be time-consuming and frustrating. Customer support is often difficult to reach, provides inconsistent answers, and rarely resolves technical issues quickly. The software also feels surprisingly buggy and janky at times considering its market position and price.

### Simple, Reliable Accounting Tool That Covers the Basics Well

Overall, my experience with QuickBooks Online has been positive. It’s a practical, reliable accounting tool that handles the core financial basics well without requiring too much effort to maintain. From a SaaS and operational perspective, it’s easy to access, fairly intuitive, and works well for keeping financial data organised and up to date. It’s particularly useful for invoicing, expense tracking, and giving visibility across business finances in real time. The user interface is generally strong, though it can become a bit more complex as you move into deeper accounting functions or larger datasets. I can’t comment too heavily on value for money from a commercial perspective, and I haven’t needed to rely much on customer support due to not running into major issues personally. Overall, it’s a dependable, widely used accounting platform that does a good job of covering everyday financial operations without unnecessary complexity.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 3/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Customer support: 3/5
- Functionality: 3/5

#### Pros

QuickBooks Online is a solid, easy-to-use accounting platform that works well for day-to-day financial management without needing deep accounting knowledge. The user interface is clean and fairly intuitive, especially for core tasks like invoicing, expense tracking, and basic reporting. From a SaaS perspective, it keeps things simple and doesn’t overcomplicate the essentials, which is helpful when you just need to get things done quickly. Access and connectivity are strong, with everything running in the cloud and syncing across devices, which makes it easy to stay on top of finances whether you’re in the office or on the go. Team collaboration is also decent, particularly when multiple users (like finance teams, accountants, or managers) need access to the same financial data in real time. I've used this in past businesses with collogues and it served us well. From a value standpoint, it’s generally good for what it offers, especially for small to mid-sized businesses that want a straightforward accounting solution without heavy enterprise complexity.

#### Cons

While the interface is generally easy to use, it can start to feel a bit cluttered once you get deeper into features like reporting, reconciliation, and more advanced settings. Some workflows aren’t always as intuitive as they first appear, especially for non-finance users. As the system scales with more data, performance can occasionally slow down, particularly in reporting views or when pulling larger datasets. There is a fairly low ceiling for customisation and reporting workflows often leading to work being done in external systems like excel. Customer support is fairly mixed, I haven’t needed to use it often, but when issues do come up, resolution can sometimes take longer than expected depending on the complexity of the problem. I can’t comment too heavily on spam filtering, as it’s not really relevant to this platform. Bugs and issues are generally minor, but occasional syncing or categorisation quirks can happen, especially when integrating with bank feeds or third-party tools.

### Solid Cloud Accounting for Nonprofits

- Industry: Museums and Institutions
- Company size: 2-10 employees

Overall, our experience with QuickBooks Online has been positive. It provides strong core accounting tools, helpful reporting, and easy cloud-based access for our nonprofit team and accountant. The platform improved organization and transparency in our financial tracking and made it easier to prepare reports for the board and budgeting. However, limitations such as the lack of integration with our Vanguard accounts and some nonprofit-specific workarounds created extra manual steps. Despite those challenges, it has been a reliable solution for managing our day-to-day finances.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 4/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

QuickBooks Online made it easy to track income and expenses, manage restricted funds, and generate clear financial reports for board members and stakeholders. The cloud-based access allowed multiple team members to work in the system, which was especially helpful for collaboration with bookkeepers and accountants. We also appreciated the ability to categorize donations, track grants, and quickly pull year-end reports for audits and budgeting. Overall, it simplified our financial management and improved transparency.

#### Cons

One of the biggest challenges was the inability to integrate or reliably connect with our Vanguard accounts, which made tracking investments and reconciling balances more manual and time-consuming. Some nonprofit-specific reporting also required workarounds, and certain features felt geared more toward businesses than nonprofits. Additionally, subscription costs can add up with add-ons, making it less flexible for smaller organizations with limited budgets

My overall experience with QuickBooks Online has been excellent. From setup to daily use, the platform is intuitive and well-designed. It has significantly simplified my bookkeeping, saving me time and reducing errors. The value for money is strong given the breadth of features offered, and customer support resources are readily available when needed. I would highly recommend QuickBooks Online to any small or medium-sized business looking for a reliable, easy-to-use accounting solution.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

QuickBooks Online is incredibly easy to use, even without an accounting background. The dashboard gives a clear, real-time snapshot of your finances, and navigating between invoicing, expenses, and reports feels seamless. The invoicing feature is especially impressive — professional, customizable, and quick to send. Financial reporting is thorough yet easy to understand, making it simple to stay on top of business performance.

#### Cons

There is very little to criticize. Occasionally, the platform can feel slightly slow to load during peak times, and some of the more advanced features take a little time to discover. The fees and charges can add up depending on the plan, which may be a consideration for very small businesses or freelancers on a tight budget.

We have had a great experience overall. Again, it is one of those programs that is really essential for running a business. You are able to do so much, and with the proper training you can really succeed.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Customer support: 3/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Quickbooks is a great program for easily sending invoices and receiving payments. Although it did have a few bugs in the early stages and we encountered some issues, they seem to resolve them pretty quickly. It is very user friendly and easy to train. It is a great 'one stop shop' of invoicing, payments, financial reports and bookkeeping.

#### Cons

The customer support is not all that great, and it is difficult to get in touch with someone who understands your issue. The fees for credit card payments are more than other programs, but overall it is good value for the money because of all the things you can do.

Hate the Online application. Always loved the Quickbooks Enterprise version, but if you work remotely for several companies, it makes it impossible to switch to desktop only.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 1/5
- Value for money: 1/5
- Customer support: 1/5
- Functionality: 1/5

#### Pros

Not much since they have so many updates that get worse each time and you have to pay for chat support.

#### Cons

I would never recommend Quickbooks Online to any business. Quickbooks Desktop only. If you like remote access buy Quickbooks Enterprise.

Overall QuickBooks Online was accessible as long as we had internet which made it nice to have real-time information and access. We did have some speed issues because of the internet and the data volume though. We had a harder time figuring out some of the more detailed reports, however, using hte desktop version instead of the online version worked for those.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 3/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

The Pros of QuickBooks online include being able to access it anywhere because it uses the cloud. You can also log in from several devices which is very helpful.

#### Cons

The cons of using QuickBooks online is that you rent the software but do not own it so it incurs more costs in the long term. We also did not like that some features were not available without spending more. Some of the advanced features were not available like they were on the desktop option.

My overall experience with QBO is one of frustration. I cannot do my file at my own pace and I have no privacy. The app they promised would give me the same experience as Desktop was a lie. The $150 disc that was good for 3 years is long gone and I was forced into an online mode that is awkward and unnerving. If I knew of a different software like QB Desktop that my accountant would accept, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 3/5
- Value for money: 2/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

I own my own business (a high-end hair salon) for 20 years and have always used Quickbooks. Back in 2007 I would buy a QB Desktop disc for $150 that was good for 3 years. I have used Quickbooks Desktop for 95% of my time in business until early 2025. In March 2025 I was told that the QB Desktop subscription would double from $600 to $1200 on my next renewal and that I qualified for a special offer for QBO. I was very reluctant to switch. They told me there was an app that would give me the same experience with QBO as I had enjoyed with my QB Desktop for all those years. Remember, I am not an accountant and I probably only used 20% of what QB Desktop was capable of doing, but I was able to run my business, do direct deposit for my payroll, pay my payroll taxes, unemployment taxes, and whatever else was needed. I would sit down at the beginning of each month to close out the previous month by balancing my QB ledger with the bank statement and for 17 years I balanced it to the penny each month. I did not print up the Form 941's each quarter nor did I do year-end tax returns... I let the accountant do that and sign off on it. I felt I had complete control of my business on QB Desktop and it was not hard to do the payroll taxes & weekly payroll. I paid my bills using my bank's online Bill Pay and everything worked quite well UNTIL I switched to QBO. That app they promised would give me the Desktop experience did not. They lied to me and I was forced to learn to use QBO. I will say that when I needed assistance I got it (for free) and things seem to be working, but not as easy & stress free and Desktop. There are a few things I like about QBO - it is linked to my bank and when I enter the transactions into my ledger, it generates a picture of the check and that is a huge convenience. I used to sit down each month and go through each check on line to see who it was made out to and now the checks just appear instantly. I also like that I can sit down at work or home and use the software - my desktop was only available on my laptop at home, so I could not do it while at work. Doing payroll is easier and another big plus is that I do not have to send my file to the accountant each month - they can log onto my business at any time.

#### Cons

I dislike the fact that I have lost control of my file. With desktop I was able to make my edits and do what had to be done and when I was satisfied it was correct, I sent it. With QBO, it works on my file continuously and I feel I am forced to play catch up each time I log on to use it. I feel as if I lost my privacy because I cannot tweak my file and make it perfect b4 sending it to the accountant. With QBO I never know when my accountant has done anything, or for that matter, I dont know what they have done or saw. It's not that I have anything to hide, it's just the fact that I have lost control of perfecting my file b4 the accountant sees it. I am detail oriented and balancing my file each month with the bank statement was actually fun - now this is all done online without me knowing and I do not like that. I feel as if I was forced out of Desktop into some software that I resent.
