Business Accounting Made Simple

PROS

It is extremely useful that this software integrates banking, car/fuel usage in the internal structure. The fact that income/expense entires can be custom-automated makes for an easy and intuitive workflow. Also, that filing of taxes become super easy as the software guides one through an intuitive process and does the filing at the end! This software is a money-saver and give true peace of mind.

CONS

At this time there are no features that the developers have not thought of!

Very Useful Software

Excellent. I love this software! It has really made my job easier!!

PROS

I love the Transaction processing. I can quickly snap a photo of a receipt and then categorize it. It has helped me keep up to date on all my receipts, income, etc.

CONS

I found this software to be very easy to use. I don't have anything to add here that I don't like

Reason for choosing QuickBooks Self-Employed

Based on a recommendation from a colleague and a short demonstration that he gave me.

This program is an absolute nightmare

Truly hate it

PROS

There is nothing to like about INCONSISTENT software that can delay/hurt your business at any random moment.

CONS

The software is barely supported. Talking to a live technical agent is virtually impossible. Some minor glitches are constant and go on unfixed, but the major glitches come without warning and can literally bankrupt a small business, costing thousands of dollars in hassle. One glitch last year would deduct the GST amount owing from ONLY the customer's end of the invoice. It's not hard to imagine how quickly that damage adds up. This year I cannot send receipts. All receipts show up in the form of an invoice, an obvious disaster. Today, I can't even send invoices. They simply aren't getting to the clients. So today I'm left having to reach out to every client, troubleshooting. My business needs me to operate so that is an entire day's revenue lost. These are only a few examples, I could write a book on why to avoid this software. All I can do is hope a day will come when I have the time to transfer every single piece of customer data manually into different, more reliable software, because that's literally the only option this piece of trash software has once your already in.

Perfect for the Self-Employed Entrepreneur or Creative!

The CRA hasn't come knocking, so I can't complain about QuickBooks! It's worked great for what I've needed, and I can only assume it will continue to do so.

PROS

I've been using QuickBooks for over 5 years now. The software is simple and easy to learn, without too big of a learning curve. I would still very much recommend having a certified accountant set everything up for you in the beginning so you have everything that you need.I've used it to pay bills, collect payments, send invoices, track expenses, and look at reports of my business over time. it's been easy to update and adjust as my processes and business grow, which is a big benefit.

CONS

Overall it's been pretty good. My biggest problem was when they discontinued used of the desktop app - I don't like having to go to the browser to do my accounting, and truly preferred the application. There are some features that i don't truly understand, but I allow my accountant to tackle those so it isn't really an issue for me. I work with both CDN and USD, so not being able to have 2 deposit accounts is a bit of a pain, and required me to use Stripe to collect US payment. Lastly, having multiple-currency mode activated doubled my monthly rate - I feel that that's a bit expensive for a feature? Would be great if that was a little bit of a lower price point.

Reason for choosing QuickBooks Self-Employed

My accountant recommended it because she used it. No-brainer from me!

Perfect For Self Employed Accounting!

Overall I definitely would recommend this to anyone who is self employed or has a simple one person business. It's definitely geared toward beginners so don't expect all the bells and whistles that you'd get with the more advanced versions of Quickbooks, but it's perfect to track your finances as a self employed person. There's a good reason Intuit is the leader in this space!

PROS

I love the interface, design and layout of QuickBooks Self-Employed! I use the online version and they've really designed it exactly for people who are self employed like myself. It makes tax time super easy and makes it easy to budget and keep track of expenses. You can also make invoices cleanly and quickly. Overall I love that it's geared for self employed individuals, as the name suggests!

CONS

While I do love how simple it is, it's sometimes even a little too basic or user friendly. I can't fault it too much for this since that's also what make it so great, but don't expect this to be as in depth as regular Qiuckbooks as it really is just geared for self employed folks, and I would even as it's for beginners.

Reasons for switching to QuickBooks Self-Employed

I made the switch because I was looking for something simpler, and this is it! They also had a 50% off the first 3 months, which I have to say enticed me to try it!

Great product that saves a lot of time

I'm very happy with the software and it almost suits all of my needs bar the lack of quotations.

PROS

QBSE is very easy to setup and use. It links directly to any bank accounts that you use so it's always pulling through transactions for you to check and allocate as necessary. You can customise the invoices easily and use your own branding. It quickly and easily calculates your taxes and estimates your year end liability. I use the app on my android phone as well as the desktop version and both are very good. It's great to be able to raise invoices whilst with a client.

CONS

The one thing that bothers me is that you can't raise quotations in the software without upgrading the package to a tier that's overkill for what I need.

Reasons for switching to QuickBooks Self-Employed

Took advantage of a discount to trial it alongside Sage and found that I much preferred QBSE.

Useful, but expensive.

Overall a good experience. This software prevents me from losing receipts and having to do a ton of work on my taxes at the end of the year.

PROS

The most obvious pros are the receipt tracking and the integration with TurboTax. You can snap pictures of receipts or upload screenshots for those online and record the biller, amount, date, and any notes. There's also a category feature I find helpful. At the end of the year, QuickBooks will send it all to TurboTax, which makes self-employed taxes way easier.

CONS

It's expensive. For the tax package, it's $25/month, or $300 by the end of the year.

Vendor Response

Thank you for the review, Jessie. We're happy to hear you've been able to use QuickBooks to get the job done easily. To continue learning about the software, we recommend checking out our video tutorials: (https://quickbooks.intuit.com/tutorials/). All the best. -Kristina, The Quick Books Team

It's an ok software, but there are better

My overall experience was satisfactory. It's a well-known name, which may have played a part in my choosing the software. But, as I've stated above, I switched to a more robust and more affordable software. You can view my comparison of QB: SE and my current software, and why I switched, here:https://redconradswellnessalternatives.com/2021/04/05/tools-for-the-self-employed-independent-contractor-small-business-owner-gig-worker/

PROS

It has many features needed to stay on top things.

CONS

I found it to be a little pricey, especially compared to the software I currently use. The free version of my current software alone blows QB: SE out of the water, paid version is split into tiers that is both more affordable and more robust then QB.

Okay Basic Software For Small Businesses or Self-Employed However, There Are Better and Free Alternatives

Overall, not worth the cost to me. Especially with those who are self-employed or have small businesses.

PROS

This does what it is supposed to do and only that which is track money. It also can track mileage automatically and gives you an overview of the distance you have traveled each day.

CONS

It is basic, it lacks functionality that should be considered 'basic' such as being able to categorize expenses and income. You can also not utilize many needed integrations for other software which basically forces double entry. It is expensive considering there are other free alternatives that have way more features and integrations

Not as Effective as Desktop

While I love the mileage tracking and the lonks to banks, it is really frustrating when i spend 20 minutes categorizing mileage as personal or business, only to discover that thw changes have not been saved

PROS

Love the mileage tracking and that it links to my bank and credit card accounts

CONS

Difficult to categorize entries and correct reports. Categories are not customizable. If the app does not connect to the internet, changes made do not save.

Crippled Software

See above. It’s designed only to frustrate you into upgrading. But I’m going to a spreadsheet rather than pay them anymore. The Quickbooks I used 25 years ago was excellent.

PROS

Terrible software. Nothing good to say.

CONS

1. Once you have entered a billing item you can’t change the price or remove an item from your catalog. 2. You can not reorder the rows in your invoice. 3. You can not insert a new item in the middle of your invoice. 4. You can not include images of receipts for reimbursement. 5. You can not give your invoice a job title. I enter a title as the first billing item so my client has some way of knowing what job but that appears nowhere in my invoice list so I can see which job is which. 6. There’s more but to think any self employed professional could use this is absurd. 7. Customer support doesn’t welcome feedback, they just say you’ll have to pay more money than what I pay now. I am not on a free plan, this costs real money.

Vendor Response

We want to thank you for trying QuickBooks Self-Employed, Alexander. We'd be happy to pass this feedback on to the Engineers. They do look at this to add or update existing features. Needs a lot of improvement and better customer service

PROS

It helps me do billing, accounting, and sending invoices to clients.

CONS

The website times out before you can save an invoice. This happened many times and I lost hours of work. There is no way to change it! My invoices have many items and it takes me time to go through my notes and my calendar to compile it. If the designers of the software did billing, they would actually know that. Please add a feature to not get timed out. Also their customer service is not available on weekends. Like many self employed I do my billing on weekends and I cannot get any help. However their homepage has customer service available for new customers 24/7. It seems new business is more important that paying customers.

Reason for choosing QuickBooks Self-Employed

I chose it to help with billing but frankly I have lost a lot of time being timed out of work. I am very disappointed.

Vendor Response

Hi there, Ishtiaq. Thank you for leaving us a review. We'd love to lend a hand to help the time out issues you're experiencing. If you haven't already try signing into your Self Employed app. Then, tap the top-left corner and swipe down. Tap "Touch ID and Passcode". Assuming the TouchID is toggled on, there'll be a "Require" setting. Tap on it to adjust this to a longer timeframe to cut down on sign-outs. Hope this helps! -Kristina, The QuickBooks Team

A great product for anyone who is self-employed

Overall I find this software incredibly helpful and integral to my accounting practices as a small business.

PROS

The mobile app has been integral to keeping up with cataloguing receipts on the go. You can simply snap a receipt with your phone's camera and the app will automatically match it with any expense. And categorizing expenses is as easy as swiping right or left. Both the app and the browser version have made finding deductions and filing my quarterly taxes so much easier. I don't know how I would have done this accurately without quickbooks.

CONS

I wish there were ways to search individual transactions by category, or type. At times I have a difficult time sorting through past transactions or figuring out what each was.

Reason for choosing QuickBooks Self-Employed

This product was recommended by a colleague and I've recommended it to other individuals in my field of work since.

Highly recommend for all small business owners

Great. Very happy I am using it. QB SE is a trusted and affordable resource for keeping my business and tax items in check.

PROS

I love the different features QB Self-Employed has: Auto-mileage tracking, invoicing, tax checklist, it tells you when an invoice has been viewed and payed, transaction tracking, business reports, and it syncs with TurboTax

CONS

I wish the invoicing feature was more sophisticated. For example, I wish I could send estimates instead of an "invoice" at times, but I have another program I use outside of QB that can do that for me. It's probably in a more expensive QB service but I wish it were available for Self-Employed.

Use with caution

PROS

The software is easy to use when it functions correctly.

CONS

Login issues are the worst. The issues happens when you need the software the most. I have had this issue twice and it alway happens during tax time or when you are trying to correct your bookkeeping for accuracy. The issue is an internal problem and you have to submit a case and get a case number from support. For startups, small, veteran, minority, or disadvantage businesses intuit is the worst company to do business with they have so many bad reviews, they are bias in their business and they will contribute to the failure of your business.

Reasons for switching to QuickBooks Self-Employed

Its easier for accounting, bookkeeping, and taxes due to the structure of the business.

Quick books self employed saves me so much time.

PROS

I love the simple workflow for most things invoices, quotes, expenses, time, etc. I hate accounting, and book keeping so to be able to add these rapid fire with little effort makes me very happy. It also is very handy come tax time b/c I can easily grab all the information and hand it off to turbo tax or an accountant for them to deal with. I also really like the dashboard so I can quickly view the status of my freelance accounts.

CONS

Somethings feel almost buried. I wish there was some customization for more commonly used tasks. I'm more inclined to generate a bunch of quotes versus invoices so I wish I had a way to remove some drill down for more commonly used tasks.

Continues to have holes

Frustrating. Thankful for at least something to invoice my clients, but this is a limited program that doesn't do some very common, basic things.

PROS

It gives me a template to enter line item invoices and get instant calculations.

CONS

Holes in basic needs, such as counter-intuitive button functions -- it's easy to send a premature invoice, inadvertently erase work, and you can't easily, or sometimes at all, send a copy of your invoice to another email address. Sometimes it glitches and won't send. If you want to re-invoice someone due to late payment, there's no way to write your client a note--the program just sends the same invoice with no explanation to your client. It's just a badly conceived program.

Reason for choosing QuickBooks Self-Employed

I didn't know it would be this poorly constructed. Bad assumption.

The #1 Software to Elevate and Simplify My Business

Overall, my experience with QuickBooks Self-Employed software has been positive, as it provides a systematic way for me to make my time spent on business more efficient and easy. Using the app on my cell phone has been a game changer as well.

PROS

QuickBooks Self-Employed software includes an incredible simple and easy to use interface to classify expenses between personal and business, including tags to denote certain features of the expense, and even provides a way to auto-classify transactions that regularly come from the same source. I also appreciate the mileage tracking feature to this softward.

CONS

Sometimes there is a small lag in depositing checks into my business account and reflection onto the software in order to classify the expense, delaying my efficiency, but otherwise I have yet to find a feature of QuickBooks Self-Employed that is specifically negative.
