### Most mentioned pros

- Its robust feature set that combines detailed accounting, inventory, and reporting in one reliable system, making financial management straightforward and efficient.
- The invoicing feature and account receivable feature helps me a lot in managing and I can track down the inventory for the stock levels and it connects smoothly with the bank which saves me a lot of time on accounting.
- It is a dependable solution for managing business finances, generating reports, and maintaining accounting records. While it takes some time to learn all features, it provides the tools needed for accurate financial management and business growth.

### Most mentioned cons

- The PR does a very bad job of communicating the Vacation and Sick Time, and there is no way for me to adjust this to make it show things clearer for the employee. When updating data underlying reports it takes me back to the top of the report, which is usually now where the change occurred so I have to manually return to the spot that I changed.)
- The software has a steep learning curve, and troubleshooting issues such as voided checks, imported data, or accounting corrections can be time-consuming.
- cant email employees their pay sheet, when i have to call them they are all rude except for customer support, the gst and pst is incorrect, the payroll numbers have been incorrect, i have to manually update.

We've used it daily for years and it just works. There are more expensive options that would probably give us more flexibility, but Sage does the job for a small business like ours without much fuss.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Customer support: 4/5
- Functionality: 3/5

#### Pros

It works. Since it's old, it's gone through update after update, and it's bug-free. There's plenty of alternatives, most would be more expensive, I'm sure. Our team is familiar with it and that helps with completing our work as a company. The fact that we can, through integration, have payments automatically applied to invoices is a time saver.

#### Cons

It's old. It's built on top of old architecture which can cause for limitation on improvements moving forward. We have an issue with our data and that causes for some annoyances but overall there's nothing that doesn't work.

It eliminates me from conducting the business out of numerous messy Spreadsheets. Now Sage 50 simply holds all of our Vendor Bills and Customer Invoices in a single list; therefore, I always know where we stand. Also it makes creating Financial Reports for the bank substantially less complicated and overall it works fine for our company.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 4/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

With Sage 50 I can literally see what has been billed and what needs to be paid from all the vendors in one location as opposed to digging through paperwork. They recently updated the user interface and it appears more contemporary than prior versions and also being able to upload pdf bills into the program and having the program automatically scan those bills to save me time entering information is tremendous.

#### Cons

Their pricing model is totally insane and they continue to raise their prices continuously and add no additional features that provide me value. The reporting capabilities within the custom reporting function is extremely difficult due to the fact that you have to roll all the way to the right side of the screen in order to locate the print button.

Switched to Sage 50 after getting frustrated with spreadsheets and haven't really looked back. It's not the prettiest software and the UI feels a bit dated, but it's reliable — and that matters more when you're dealing with your actual finances. Once I got past the initial setup headaches, day-to-day use became pretty smooth. Good tool, just takes some patience upfront.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Customer support: 4/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

The financial reporting is genuinely impressive. As someone managing my own books, having ready-made reports that I can just pull up without building them from scratch saves a lot of time. Invoicing is clean and simple once you're past the setup phase — clients receive professional-looking invoices and I can track what's paid and what's pending without digging around. Data feels secure and well-organized too.

#### Cons

The learning curve in the beginning is steeper than I expected. Took me a couple of weeks and a few YouTube tutorials before I felt comfortable. Also feels a bit overbuilt for solo freelance use — like some features exist for teams or larger businesses and just add noise for someone working alone. Pricing could be friendlier for individual users.

#### Reasons for switching to Sage 50 Accounting

Was managing everything in Excel spreadsheets and it got messy pretty fast — tracking invoices, expenses and reconciling at month end was taking way too long. Wanted something purpose-built for accounting that wouldn't require me to maintain formulas manually. Sage 50 made more sense for keeping things clean and audit-ready.

#### Ratings breakdown

#### Pros

Reporting, I love the report, and that errors are easy to track due to the level of detail we can access

#### Cons

#### Reasons for choosing Sage 50 Accounting

Better then it used to be to talk with someone for help. I find it could with reconcilliation. Do not care for the payroll part. It won't let you save and come back to it.

#### Ratings breakdown

I like that I do not have to do a whole adjusting entry. It does a good back up. I find entering A/R really easy to do.

#### Cons

I find the payroll hard. It will not let you save and come back to it. A/P when viewing reports for R & M will not let you see the description.

To me I am able to manage my accounts, have the confidence that my company accounts are where they should be. As with all, yes would like them to be cheaper, but then they would not be providing the updates and listening to the customers such as myself and making the improvements.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 4/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

I have tried the others and they are not as user friendly, when you consider that operative time is the most valuable resource to a company, Sage is the most useful tool to free up that resource. All the software does the same thing, but the way in which users are able to interact which the software to impact their business is the most important tool, whilst being able to ensure that their time is utilised. VAT, CIS and end of year reports without the stress and complications. Not even going to put myself through the needless worry of migrating elsewhere again. When I moved had to call VAT as a serious error had been reported by their software, almost got myself in trouble.

#### Cons

The issues have been dealt with over the last few updates. It was the bank recs, had issues trying to upload the bank statements. I have recently tried the AI tool, and found that I was able to use it without even looking at the helpful hints, so smooth, will continue to use this.

Overall, using Sage for invoicing, banking and producing reports, especially department reporting, is easy to set up and end users love the reports.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

It is easy to use and very intuitive. Reconciliations are easy to do and you can fix items really easily when mistakes are made. Also customer support is excellent as if you have any issues there is always someone you can talk to to get them fixed. They are also very knowledgeable about the product and never talk down to you if you've done something stupid. The reporting system is easy to use and very effective in producing departmental P&Ls etc. Also the guides that Sage have are easy to find and very easy to follow. I would definitely recommend Sage to anyone as I find it saves time so is value for money.

#### Cons

I do not like the invoicing system. You can either go through the supplier or go to invoices and generate a new one, which is confusing and if you delete an invoice it does not always delete on the customer. Also once you save an invoice it disappears which means you have to go back into the invoice to print and put the invoice to the ledger. If you wish to change an invoice to a supplier already set up, it will still show the original wording in the system.

#### Ratings breakdown

#### Pros

It is relatively easy to use once you get started. I like how easy it is to find reports and customer support has always been very helpful at solving the majority of issues I have come across.

#### Cons

I think that for the cost of the program I should be able to email pay stubs right from the payroll program without having to pay for the HR portion of Sage. I wish that Sage had their own video demo's without having to try and find what you need on YouTube. I wish there was better information in regards to the differences between the desktop version the cloud based version.

Overall, my experience with Sage has been good. As mentioned, it cheap and efficient. We have looked at adding Sage HR to our platform but we are not big enough for that yet.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5

#### Pros

For us it is a good value. Its cheap and for us, it does most things we need. It is nice that the automatic invoice processing is now a feature available.

#### Cons

I can not download my budget into Sage for the next year. I have to wait until the current year to do that. So far, I have not been able to download my budget as I can't find the file extension needed. It would be nice to see an account over several years without putting the information into Excel and building the history myself. If would be nice if Sage would have a few built in ratios it could perform on your financial statements or some kind of KPI reporting.

My overall experience has been positive because the software is incredibly stable and accurate for financial tracking. The only downside is the outdated interface and sluggish remote syncing. It gets the job done well, but it definitely needs a modern UI refresh.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5

Overall, Sage 50 is a powerful, dependable tool for managing business finances. It gets the job done perfectly when it comes to invoicing, data management, and tax prep. However, it lacks the modern, smooth user experience of newer web-based apps. It is ideal for traditional accountants, but a bit frustrating for beginners.

really good, I am a bookkeeper and I prefer it over all other accounting software. I have been using sage since 2007 and I like it the best.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 3/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Ease of use, invoicing, performance and financial management. I find it excellent in recording payables and receivables and I like how you can post that way or used journal entry, our choice because you need both. The I like how professional the reports are, like the trial balance and the financial statement

#### Cons

how if shuts down due to power outage how you cannot reconnect that sage you were working in until couple hours or you have to shut down the server or wait until the next day

### Sage 50 does the job but I think it’s time for a design refresh

Overall it prevents a small to medium size company from using spreadsheet’s and guesses for bookkeeping. For Project Based companies it allows them to see whether they are meeting their budget during the project vs. afterwards. It eliminates much of the manual cross checking required at Month End because all reports pull from the same source as everything else.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

It allows me to directly link costs associated with a particular expense to a specific Project Phase rather than having to make an educated guess about what was charged to the account. The Reports function is also very good as well. A Report takes only a few Clicks and I am able to view a full Balance Sheet or Aging Report in a matter of seconds. Inventory Tracking is also good as long as you have actual Stock on Hand and are not simply tracking Invoices.

#### Cons

As I am writing this article, I find myself getting hungrier; however, I believe that the user interface has been stagnant for years. In some cases it takes 2-3 clicks to locate a setting. There isn’t a real mobile application. Petty complaint – Every time Sage pushes out an update, I feel like they move things around in the menu’s for no reason and then I must learn where my frequently accessed reports were moved. Support is spotty at times. Sometimes I will be put on hold for longer than it would take for the bus to arrive.

The system offers a full range of functions for core accounting tasks and thus perfectly meets our requirements. The daily availability of business analyses and balance sheets allows us to maintain a constant overview of our financial situation.

Improvement suggestions are solicited from the community, feedback is provided and I've even seen some of them implemented. There's relatively little to add.
