ASP.NET is the best technology for building web applications

My first professional web application I built, I used asp.net framework to develop it. My experience was somehow out of this world. It was my first time building a web application using ASP.NET, I had to learn from the beginning how the framework works, and once I figured out how it works, I fell in love with it; 2 applications after the first one was developed using it.

PROS

I like the fact that it is free I like the fact that it very secure You can build web applications with ease For Microsoft developers, it makes it easy to develop web applications running on Microsoft platform

CONS

I don't like the fact that it is not a very easy technology to use It is not easy to learn like PHP

Reason for choosing ASP.NET Zero

It was a bit foreign to me, I wanted a new challenge

Reasons for switching to ASP.NET Zero

I wanted to learn new technologies for web development

Vendor Response

Hi Marenyane, Thank you for taking the time to review ASP.NET Zero. It is great to hear that you liked your new challenge with ASP.NET Zero. We hope to keep helping you with your new applications, hopefully, you'd fall in love with. :) Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need our help.

ASP.NET for Desktop browser insurance app

The system allows sellers of building insurance to instantly calculate the annual premium based on value, age, etc. of the building. The ready-to-use client => controller => service => DB flow with all the surrounding authentication etc. supported the focus on application and web design. Many of the security and process flow features are already implemented.

PROS

The product can be downloaded, installed, configured and is is ready to log in in under 1h. The steps to do this are clearly described in the manual. All you need is an operating system (Windows server in our case) and a DB plus development environment. The functionality saves the tremendous effort for developing an empty framework of DB access, user management, browser page design etc. Many features are available and there are regular update with more. The integration of the client design system is always soon after the latest releases which allows to update the own application with latest features. The stability / robustness is outstanding. Yet to experience the first failure after 5 years of the application running an an environment with several hundreds of users creating millions of DB records.Extending the developed app or writing plugins is straight-forward. This is due to the well-organized architecture of the overall system.

CONS

ASP.NET is not for beginners. What is a beginner and what a pro? This is individual judgement. I found it difficult to take advantage of all the features and sometimes to find out where to implement or change what. This is partly due to my own level (mid experienced but not high), partly due to the sheer complexity and many aspects but also due to the fact that the code has hardly any comments. Sometimes it might make sense to have find some more key features documented in the code.

Reason for choosing ASP.NET Zero

ASP.NET is a complex system which supports the development of an app. The claim on the first page on ASP.NET's home page "What is..." provides a comprehensive answer. And unlike so many other pages in this world after 6 years of usage I received what they promise: I save time & effort.Thank you ASP.NET team!

Vendor Response

Thank you for your review! We're thrilled to hear that our ASP.NET Zero product has saved you time and effort in developing your insurance app. We appreciate your feedback about the difficulty in taking advantage of all the features and will take it into consideration for future updates. It's great to hear that the functionality of our product has been able to support your building insurance calculations and that you've experienced outstanding stability and robustness. Thank you for choosing ASP.NET!

Support is pretty good - usually get a response with 3 working days We have a fairly common architecture (AWS / ELB / ECS / Docker) so most issues we come across are not with ASP.NET Zero as such and have been experienced and resolved already

PROS

CONS

Really quick and easy to get a SaaS ready application up and going.

PROS

Ability to create isolated multi-tenant databases and really good support for creating application editions with any combination of features for our SaaS solution.

CONS

Doesn’t align with our frontend tech-stack which uses React rather than Angular.

Reason for choosing ASP.NET Zero

Cost affective and out of the box for our business to get going with having a SaaS solution for our application.

Vendor Response

The Perfect Foundation for a SaaS platform

I cannot stress enough how much I like this product and would absolutely use this platform in the future. I have even recommended to our development partner that they should look to implement ASP.NET Zero for more of their clients because of how good a platform it is.

PROS

We estimated that the existing out of the box features saved us well over 6 months of development time because they were already well implemented. Multi-Tenancy, the concept of Features, and role-based security were all key to our success.

CONS

We found working with the Metronic themes the most problematic, but that is relative since nothing was really terribly difficult. Upgrading to new versions were just more time consuming because of the Metronic themes.

Vendor Response

Thank you for your fantastic review of ASPNET Zero. We greatly appreciate your positive feedback and are delighted to hear that it has provided the perfect foundation for your SaaS platform. We're thrilled that the out-of-the-box features saved you significant development time, particularly the well-implemented Multi-Tenancy, Features, and role-based security concepts. We understand your feedback regarding the Metronic themes, and we will continue to work on improving the upgrade process to minimize any time-consuming aspects related to them. Your recommendation to your development partner is greatly appreciated, and we're glad to hear that you would use ASPNET Zero again in the future. Secure. No hassles. The learning curve was a bit steep, but it paid off.

PROS

Very quick setup. Loads of off the shelf features. Data and row level security. Password reset, expiry and MFA. Developer Tools. SECURITY!

CONS

The Metronic Themes are not great, and there is not a lot of research / guidance available. Default themes waste a lot of real estate on wide headers and margins.

Reason for choosing ASP.NET Zero

Pricing compared very favourably. Also had the best reviews online.

Reasons for switching to ASP.NET Zero

Mainly for the security provided by ASP.Net

Vendor Response

Thank you for your valuable feedback on ASP.NET Zero. We're delighted to hear about your positive experience with the quick setup, comprehensive features, and robust security. Excellent ASP.NET Core / Angular starting point for web applications

I am very pleased with ASP.NET Zero. Of course, there are things I wish It either did differently or had for functionality. But it is the best starting point for web applications I have ever found. I fully recommend.

PROS

I really enjoy developing with ASP.NET Zero. It allowed me to get up and started with some of the more basic features I would put into a web application, such as security, authentication, role management, and a starting point for the front-end using Angular. I fully recommend ASP.NET Zero as an excellent starting point for web applications.

CONS

The upgrade process is a bit of a pain point for me. Sometimes they go okay and other times things are broken and it takes me days or even a week or so to get upgraded. There are some features I just don't care for such as Org Units I just have no use for. But I wish It would be easier to get rid of functionality. I wish they were in a plugin or something I could just turn off and remove.

Vendor Response

Hi Joe, thank you for your review. It is great to hear you are happy with what we offer. For your pain point, we are working on simplifying your job in the best possible way. Your suggestion is delivered to our developers. Thank you!

A very interesting framework

Has always been exceptional. It does a lot of heavy lifting considering what I think is the most important aspects of this framework (multi-tenance, authentication & authorisation) out of the box.

PROS

I have used it for different application. The most important aspect for me has always been the multi-tenancy ability, authentication and authorisation as well as the flexibility on tech stack to use. I have used it with asp.net core, mvc and javascript as well as angular on asp.net core.

CONS

Price of course. Maybe something can be done in terms of licensing especially for small companies like ours. Everything is expensive with us. We work with very tight budgets.

Vendor Response

Thank you for your thoughtful review and for highlighting the versatility and robust features of our framework, especially in multi-tenancy, authentication, and authorization. We understand the concerns about pricing for small companies and are continually exploring ways to deliver value while being mindful of budget constraints. Your satisfaction and success with our framework are what drive us to improve continually.

PROS

The biggest feature for us is the role/permissions. We needed something that was easy to stand up that had that all built in already.

CONS

Our team has built 15+ large scale projects using Asp.net zero in the last 6 years. The good points are higher than the bad points and satisfied in terms of large scale app development due to ready framework.

PROS

I liked the User impersonation, multitenancy settings, rapid development, authentication features the most.

CONS

Takes lot of time to load. Even Loading 20 projects in Visual Studio is a pain. Wont suggest it for a small project. Deployment & Coding can be time taking due to so many references.

Very good. Their response to questions has always been great. Documentation is well written.

PROS

Getting most of the core functionality out of the way helped our one lone developer get started on our needs and not have to build out a lot of those core components.

CONS

Annual license renewals feels a bit expensive. Would rather one larger cost up front and then renewals for updates are more moderate.

ASP.NET Zero allowed our start-up to quickly achieve production readiness

Our experience with the ASP.NET Zero product, Volosoft organisation, and the community, to be overwhelmingly positive.I have, and would continue to, recommend this product to anyway with a need to quickly build a massively functional enterprise application, without sacrificing any of the best practices expected to be found in production-grade software.

PROS

Most of the infrastructural plumbing has been considered by the architects of ASP.NET Zero, and arranged within the application code-base in a sensible, clean and intuitive fashion. This removes one of the largest hurdles to application development - upskilling new team members to follow a homogenous set of patterns and practices.

CONS

Our greatest complaint - which I do see shared from others, is the difficulty in upgrading ASP.NET Zero. We estimate for our product, a 100-150 man hour cost to performing this upgrade - and parallel branches would be best avoided during this time, due to the scale of churn.Given it's nature - source-code rather than just a binary dependency - it's very easy to "mix" our product-specific changes into the ASP.NET Zero authored code. While ASP.NET Zero does support modularisation, which we expect would minimise this - there are some things that just are not possible - or are orders of magnitude more difficult to do in a modular manner.I would love to see a greater adoption of the Open-closed Principle and training documentation/best practices to better mitigate this weakness.

Vendor Response

Thank you for your review and for taking the time to share your thoughts on ASPNET Zero. We're glad to hear that ASP.NET Zero allowed your start-up to quickly achieve production readiness. We appreciate your feedback on the infrastructural plumbing that has been considered by the architects of ASP.NET Zero and arranged within the application code-base in a sensible, clean and intuitive fashion, which is helpful to upskilling new team members. Super flexible and easy to use .Net platform to build highly advanced products

Excellent. We use it for our core SaaS platform and it saved us well over 12 months of development if we had to build many of our must have required features from scratch.

PROS

It is feature rich and covers all the must haves for a SaaS product, including authentication, authorisation, multi tenancy, auditing, logging and mobile solutions. Uses the latest versions of all technologies and keeps themselves up to date. Best practice templates for the front end as well and easy to extend and expand on where you want to alter or enhance the base platform. Full source code provided and responsive support team if you notice something that doesn't look quite right.

CONS

The Metronic UI (in the Angular based solution) takes some getting used to and some of the components aren't the best. We enhanced it however by using Syncfusion components and have a great front end solution.

Best Framework in 40+ Years in Industry

I have been a software architect/developer for over 40 years and this is by far the best framework I have ever used. It gave our small team a great jumpstart on a new IIOT system that was key in us winning a national innovation award. We could get down to developing the real business code without having to spend valuable time on the cross-cutting underlying framework.

PROS

Uses best of class techniques Complete functional starting framework up and running in less than a day Helpful forum and great support Extensable Excellent documentation Access to source code allow developers to see exactly how modules are built to either extend them or just learn how to perform an operation. So many great features...

CONS

Time consuming to upgrade to next release of Asp.Net Zero if you need a feature. That being said, have found the time to upgrade is still less than developing the feature.

Reason for choosing ASP.NET Zero

After a quick trial it was obvious that it was well worth the money and after 5 years of use, that proved to be correct.

Head start on the competition

We are extremely satisfied with the framework. We used ASPNETBOILERPLATE from the same company on some of the earlier project and we were also very satisfied. And then we bought the ASP.NET Zero and the only thing we regret is not buying it earlier.

PROS

By using the Zero framework you'll have a big advantage over the competition. It has a vast set of features that every serious app should have and having all of that before you even start coding is a huge advantage.

CONS

Version upgrades can take a lot of time. But there's really no need to do the updates more than once a year when the new .NET version comes out so it's not that big of a deal.

Vendor Response

Thank you for your review and for taking the time to share your thoughts on ASP.NET Zero. Simply the best starting point for your next ASP.NET Core web application

We create fast to market web applications for our partners and clients using ASP.NET Zero. It's a perfect solution for this. Even first non-functional prototypes looks great from the start.

PROS

The standard features are a welcome starting point. You can start adding your own functionality right away without worrying about authentication, user/role management, logging etc. etc.

CONS

Upgrading to a next (major) version can be a pain. You get new functions, that's great. But when there are more fundamental changes you have to be carefully.

Vendor Response

Hi Jeroen, thank you for your review. It is great to hear ASP.NET Zero makes your job easier. Your suggestion is duly noted on the update time ranges.

Product that save you years of development

I am using this platform since the beginning, for many years and i will stay there if the quality remains the same (at a reasonable cost)

PROS

- Easy to use - always updated to latest version of technologies - great customer service - save you a lot of time avoiding redeveloping most used functionnalities

CONS

- could takes some few days to migrate to a new version, but it is related to how big your project is. This is not related to asp.net zero - price that go up; but you can benefit offers like black friday

Vendor Response
