Impressive cloud based IDE

I got hold of a Chromebook to try out the OS and to see if I could make use of it as a light laptop alternative for studying, refreshing my development skills and blogging. I thought I'd struggle to find an IDE I could use that would be even close to usable and I couldn't have been more wrong! CodeEnvy is really impressive, it has every project type I think I'll ever need and seems to work without a hitch. I can always go back to where I left it and with Git support I know I have my code and can track changes easily. Chromebook is a real option for a cheap development environment.. I'm pleasantly surprised.

PROS

Free option, huge support for development frameworks and languages, simple to set up and use.

CONS

Haven't found any yet.

A Feature Rich Cloud based Development Environment !

PROS

1. It is cloud based development environment and hence can be accessed anywhere on any device 2. The interface is clean and hence it is easy to learn about the tools and just getting hang of the IDE. 3. It is ideal for a web developer like me who has to work in team since it allows easy code sharing and collaborative features to allow other developers to edit and compile code on their machines. 4. It has support for all the latest technologies such as nodejs , reactjs etc.

CONS

The only downside is that it is simply a cloud based interface to a development environment so it needs internet and can be heavy in data usage depending upon what you are doing.

The closest thing to a real Java IDE in the Cloud, but not ready for production

I've been looking forward to an online Java IDE since the announcement of Eclipse Orion (which support only Javascript for now) and was excited to try Codenvy. It looks promising, but it's clearly not ready for production work. From my shot experience with it, it seems like it has all the basic features for prototyping of a new simple project. But it does require some more polishing before it can be used on a real-size project. I think I'll use it mainly for playing around with Docker.

PROS

Java support and syntax highlighting Docker and maven integration! Familiar IDE layout, similar to Eclipse/IntelliJ Integration with Git cloud repositories like BitBucket and Github (among others) Fair choice of Java application servers (Jetty, Tomcat, JBoss, Glassfish) for deployment

CONS

No support for refactoring No way to search through whole project Limited keyboard shortcuts Limited number of maven archetypes available Cannot run single Junit tests Buggy code editor

Yay for small, nay for enterprise.

I'm using Codenvy for developing ongoing personal apps, when not in my main development station. While it's really complete and effectively comfortable, it has it's limitations. The first that really struck me, is that you don't have search/replace. Other keyboard shortcuts are either obscure, or inexistent. For small projects, it's totally recommendable, but it may not be a great option for enterprise-grade projects.

PROS

Varied language support. Visually awesome IDE. Fast, dynamic and comfortable, even if it's a web app. Runs on Docker, and Docker always improves everything. You can use default Dockerfiles, or just create your own. Many features and support for CVS and DBs.

CONS

No Scala, no specialized langs like Octave. Cannot customize all colors in the IDE theme (blue over black in Python? No no). It only has templates for web-related files (HTML, CSS, JS, etc). No search/replace!?

TDB Review

I've only just started using the app so I really can't give a real comprehensive review. At this point I'm very impressed as it seems to have nearly every feature/functionality that a desktop app.

PROS

Love the built in dependencies (Angular/Gulp/Node, etc.) UI is laid out very well. Standard spots for usual Web Dev environments/browsers Amazed that you provide Terminal that seems to have root access.

CONS

I really can't bang on the app. I know this is what you're really looking for - honest, valid insight into your users' thoughts/feelings/wants/needs. Unfortunately I'm a junior developer and this tool is way above my skill level. With that said, I promise to return and provide relevant feedback and thoughts as they come along. It's the least I could do for company that has developed and provides such a great SAAS. Best, -TDB

Great Online IDE so far..

I just give a try to create a rails app with this IDE. and it was a great experience, and the IDE itself, feel like I'm working on a native desktop environment application. I'm very happy to work with this system, also it help me to carrying coding workplace and the code wherever I go, because I use PC for my home computer and another PC for the office, so I need to sync up with my workspace, settings ..etc, thanks for the great product.

PROS

The app feels more native.. and it's more familiar with the desktop IDE programme. easy to use, and great built-in tool for the quick task.

CONS

I think the app need more performance improvements. Especially when loading the project workspace.

Finally a working Cloud IDE

I tried various cloud IDEs and did not find any that was fast enough and understood correctly my projects. But it's a thing of the past now, Codenvy is fast and great ! There is one thing to try : the run part with Docker at its core !

PROS

Fast Reliable Beautiful Docker

CONS

Keymap are (for the time being) set in stone, so you have to learn their shortcut and you can't set your own.

A good tool developers

Codenvy is a very useful tool to carry out different projects because because it allows you to add more people to help with coding is much faster the advance of them and this makes business productivity grow.

PROS

I love this tool because it allows you to work as a team and for this you only have to add the people that you want to participate in these projects, regardless of whether the projects are small or large, its interface is very easy to use because it is highly intuitive , organized and simple, also allows the user to choose who IDE wants to take their work with their own or is a matter of taste of the user, also has the most used programming languages so it is not You will have a problem because you do not find the language you want to code and the best thing is that your access is very simple because you only need a good internet network and the desire to work.

CONS

Because it is hosted in the cloud it may take a while to load the projects or the progress that takes them but maybe it is due to the internet connection, besides that for someone who does not have good knowledge of codes it will take time adapt to its interface and features.

It is just an amazing environment to code, debug and improve the effectiveness.

PROS

The application provides a very easy platform for developers like us to create and edit source codes and create automatic codes. You get remote spaces as per your requirements, you can take your coding environment technically anywhere! The application is easy to use and the plugins enable to work efficiently. They have provided an ample number of tutorials to use codes, both automatic and source and the best part I love about this application is its customer service. The customer service is very quick and responsive, and it supports large groups. It has a plethora of advanced features for sharing, organizing files and it supports a lot of languages. The pricing is very much fair and you can share the workspaces with team members as well as external clients and members.

CONS

It doesn't support local storage and I feel they could improve the security features. The absence of keyword shortcuts is a huge pitfall. Data clutter is another turn off while I use this application.

Just the what I needed!

For a person looking for jobs or to majestic the next big move, this is just a perfect software that comes with no difficulty or training phase.

PROS

Wanted a quick platform to practice my coding skills for a job interview and just wow, what an easy interface to use. Easy compiling or even cross-compiling of code and really fast!

CONS

There is no way to change the compiler versions, at least for C. Some of the libraries I tend to use are old ones not supported by the latest compilers.

Solid cloud IDE

I've used multiple cloud IDE platforms hoping to find one that stands out. Among the top I've used are Nitrous.io, Cloud9, Codeanywhere, and Codenvy. Each of these feel very similar, but differ slightly in some of the features and options available. Here's my run down of some of the pros and cons of Codenvy: Pros: - Generous FREE account allowing unlimited projects, workspaces and containers with modest memory - Git and subversion one-click menu options are a nice touch that the other IDEs don't offer - Seems to be slightly more responsive and quicker in the creation and loading of workspace environments - great integration with Docker containers and deployment options Cons: - The UI could benefit from a more user-friendly design and layout option. Currently it feels sort of cluttered and hard to navigate as may of the components are very narrow or crunched together. - Would like to see some ability to change the IDE theme - Still don't see FTP support - Database connections must be external (some other providers offer hosted DBs in the workspace) - Would like to have more text/code editor features and functions built into the IDE - Uncertain Postgres support Overall I think it's a great IDE and I see some indication that some of these caveats will be addressed down the road (It appears they already have a theme option built in but not active). Postgres support also seems to be a work in progress. Would recommend along with Cloud9 and Nitrous as the top providers.

Best online IDE for server application developers

Let me start with the pros and cons of this product. Pros: 1. Excellent IDE to develop server-side apps with Java, Spring, Python, Ruby, or PHP. 2. Multiple easy-to-use platform integrations with Amazon Elastic Beanstalk, AppFog, CloudBees, Cloud Foundry, Google App Engine, Heroku and OpenShift. So, you do not need to worry about integrating with your preferred platform. 3. The basic version is free to use with 512 MB of RAM and unlimited workspaces, free and public projects. 4. Developers can create temporary IDE workspaces with full code, build, test, deploy, and collaboration functionality. You can even share it with others using a URL. 5. Its secure browser-based editor supports multi-cursor, syntax highlighting, code completion, refactoring and lots more. You can even use it to edit, build, run and debug projects. It even has multi-cursor support. Moreover, the layout is extremely similar to Eclipse. So developers won't have problems adopting to it. 6. Codenvy supports all Git commands through UI and Codenvy CLI. Cons: 1. A first time user does not need to know all of the tools. He needs to look at a sample project to understand the layout. 2. Drag and drop isn't supported. 3. Two-factor authentication isn't supported. 4. Lacks Mercurial support. Currently the Codenvy supports Git and SVN Version Control Systems. 5. Poor support for PHP. The syntax isn't highlighted and there isn't even a debugger for PHP.

New CS Student testing the waters

Codenvy is an exceptional tool and a must for programmers. It's intuitive, easy to use, and allows for multiple features that are extremely handy and useful. Pros; So far, Codenvy has allowed me to finish my homework assignments in Java and other languages, and it also helps me practice & learn a little bit of SQL. The website has an easy share function that allows me to share all my code to my tutors and friends, and I can fix and debug simultaneously with ease. It's extremely convenient, with a very attractive UI. I can log into the website from anywhere, on any computer. I've used it while I was at the airport to kill some time and add some ideas that popped into my head at the time. Extremely useful compared to many other websites, in which I still can't put my head around. Got used to this UI in less than a few hours even as a beginner. It's my playground that I use to experiment and learn with. Plus, it's free. Cons: Issues are minimal, but there is a slight learning curve as with most of these types of websites. Beginners beware, but stay at it because it's definitely worth learning. Not very useful on poor internet connections. Was not able to get good results within fast times while trying to code at the airport. Not a big deal, but an offline mode would be great.

Codenvy Rocks - Great for Mobile Teams

Many moons ago I went to school to be a Computer Programmer Analyst. My Major was C++ with a minor in SQL and Java. Currently my career path has taken me to become a System Administrator. I've been looking to get back into programming as I do some HTML5/CSS stuff on the side. My personal company, I want to use more of a cloud based setup. I am considering purchasing Chromebooks as equipment and since the main framework we plan on using is Elm, I needed an environment that would support that. Enter Codenvy. First off, it supports a ton of languages right off the hop. Even if I didn't want to use a framework, it has enough language support to get any project off the ground. The team based options are perfect and the support for adding frameworks like Elm are easy to follow. I like how easy it is to create/import projects. You can import from GIT Repos, GITHUB, ZIP, or configuration files. Then you can export them back to the same sources. You can deploy the application from the IDE, you can even test/debug right from within the IDE. I haven't spent a ton of time with it, but based on what I have, it's an amazing service that I hope does not go away anytime soon.

First of all, I love the support with Codenvy. It really seems like it's always updating, coming up

First of all, I love the support with Codenvy. It really seems like it's always updating, coming up with something new. It supports all kinds of programming languages so that it's possible to program from anywhere, anytime you need it. It's really hard to believe that this is a web application. It seems as though this could be a full blown desktop IDE. But that's the thing, it's all cloud based! I absolutely love the support for Java and Docker. It makes mostly anything that can be run on Linux machines be able to run on browsers. Truly amazing stuff. The design of Codenvy looks gorgeous and is really easy to navigate around. All your workspaces and projects are all at the tip of your fingertips (and the cloud, I guess). I honestly think that programming in general should be leaning more towards being cloud based. Every day, we are getting closer and closer to having a full-blown desktop experience in our browsers and on the cloud. This also means I can finally have a good IDE on Chrome OS since it's purely a browser based system.

IDE with a difference.

I first registered for Codenvy when it was in its early stages of Beta and a spin-off of the eXo Platform. It had first of its kind Java Application development platform. I did not do much on it then, but during October 2014, when I revisited the IDE, it was a complete makeover. I had been using IDE for quite some time (few worth mentioning are Cloud9, Codio, Koding), but Codenvy was different. I will not speak technical stuff, as it is quite a relative thing to mention. I will only notify everybody about the ease and smoothness within the IDE. Most of the IDE were clunky and I do not blame them. They were early adopters of market, but Codenvy is without any clutter. The terminal and the keyboard works the way as if you are working on local. I will not talk about Github integration and other open source capabilities within the Codenvy instance, rather I focus on a good UI and the efficiency of doing stuff. Will recommend to all novice and ninja developers. Learn -> innovate -> inspire.

Confusing at first, but certainly rewarding

As a student, I'm fairly new to coding and programming. I taught myself HTML in the past, but this year I started taking a class in Java. My school issues chromebooks to every student, which are useful for taking notes and collaborating with other students, but I was ultimately stuck when I found that the other IDEs I had been using on my personal computer were not available for Chrome OS. So I did some search and I stumbled upon a few solutions, including Codenvy and Cloud9. I struggled to get accustomed to Cloud9 for a week or two before a student in my class recommended Codenvy to me. He taught me how to use it and how to build and run programs we had been creating in class, and since then, I've been using Codenvy, and have considered it as a replacement for my go-to IDE on my personal computer as well. Codenvy is different from IDEs because it makes programming more simple. Codenvy makes your programs more accessible not only to you, but to others as well.

An online IDE with potential-- but not quite there.

I started using codenvy while I was looking for a Online IDE solution that would work across my devices as I'm not always using the same device in my work. My internet speeds are not always the greatest either. So that was also a big factor in which ones I choose (Cloud9, Koding, Codenvy, and a few others). All in all I decided to use Cloud9 for my work but Codenvy came pretty close. I personally like; * Caching the ide client-- improved loading speed & slow connection issues * Speed in creation of workspaces * Fast client * 4GB workstation RAM is free However a few things also stopped me from using it, these mainly were; * Hard to use interface (learning curve) * No colour customization for the idea appearance * Strict knowledge of docker (easy for me, but not easy for anyone else I work with) All-in-all I think it has a ton of potential and I would recommend looking into codenvy before you decide on other Online IDE solutions!

Enterprise development environments without the hassle.

While Codenvy is excellent in its flexible development and deployment, I personally found a great use for it by using it to do homework assignments in Computer Science / Software Engineering classes. These classes often use server side languages for assignments and Codenvy makes it easy to complete these assignments by basically eliminating the need to setup your own server. It is also a bonus that all server parameters and frameworks and languages are all customizable. Finally, you also do not need an IDE installed on your computer as Codenvy is fully web based. You can work on the go from any computer. I have not found too many flaws in Codenvy other than it can be a little complicated to use for users who are not on a higher level of technical ability. However this is not a flaw, because the technical people are who it was designed for.
