About AWS X-Ray

AWS X-Ray is an application performance management solution, which enables businesses to analyze, debug and track applications to identify causes for encountered issues. Using AWS X-Ray, developers can view user requests, visualize edge or node latency distribution for services and access a map of an application's underlying components from within a unified platform. It helps businesses view and filter data for traces based on several properties such as average latencies, annotation value, timestamp and more. AWS X-Ray allows professionals to isolate outliers, graph patterns and trends according to requirements.

A good analysis tool

Overall, it is the best analysis tool that I have ever used for problem investigation. It provides a variety of ways to analyze a problem or a product.

PROS

The variety of details that I can search by using this tool.

CONS

Sometimes there seems a delay for the output of the data.

Essential starting place for most RCA

PROS

It gives excellent coverage across most AWS resources and even shows how resources interact with one another. This should not be relied on as the sole method of debugging, but gives enough information to go to logs or other individual resources. It also gives really good profiling for how the overall software is performing.

CONS

It has a 6 hour window... so if you miss it - you miss it. This is especially problematic because AWS reps can pull up info outside of that window but would look for AWS specific ids - which almost not possible (or quite difficult) without x-ray tracing to give easier querying.
