Casetext saves me a lot of money every year

I am very happy with Casetext- I have access to all of the state and federal case law for less than I was paying for Lexis, which gave me only federal and one state

PROS

Good value, user friendly and good customer support

CONS

There is nothing I can think of really, I am very happy with casetext.

Reason for choosing Casetext

I find casetext more intuitive and user friendly

Excellent Tool

Support is excellent, not that it is needed much. It is feature rich, easy to use and nice layout.

PROS

Is great tool for drilling down to find cases that are on point.

CONS

It works really well, nothing I really dislike. If I have to pick something I wish it had a way to allow the user to build folders and save cases/bookmark cases under the folder for easy reference. I also wish you could receive alerts on specific statutes, case, or black letter law items to be notified if a new case is published.

Reason for choosing Casetext

Easier to use, much more competitive in pricing.

Reasons for switching to Casetext

This is easier, more inexpensive and incredibly easy to access support on those occasions when needed.

The Best Legal Research Tool

The use of Casetext is one of the best desisions I have made and would not hesitate to recomend it to anyone.

PROS

Easy to use and very reliable. Research results are on the spot. Casetext is my choice for legal research in over 35 years experience in the legal profession. Casetext has so many tools available and makes research very easy.

CONS

At first, it takes a little getting used to, but Casetext offers instructional webinars and a very good customer service. Once you learn the basics and all that Castext has to offer, using Castext becomes second nature.

Reason for choosing Casetext

Casetext offered the same results and more at a better price.

Reasons for switching to Casetext

Casetext is Second to None!

I just completed an Appellate Brief and Casetext really made it quick and easy for me to find cases that were on point. I am very pleased with Casetext and I have shared my experience with others, encouraging them to give Casetext a try.

PROS

Casetext is extremely user-friendly, whenever I need to pull up relevant caselaw, or run a Complaint or Motion through Casetext, I am always pleased with the results. Casetext is very innovative and sensitive to the needs of its customer base. I don't know what I can say to give you more ideas, as it seems you are very creative with your programs and seminars through your own abilities. Thank you for being such a wonderful service provider.

CONS

No cons coming from here! I cannot think of anything that I do not like about Casetext.

Reason for choosing Casetext

Same quality for a much more affordable price.

Perfect for a Small Firm

PROS

Casetext is perfect for a small law firm. The content, search functions, and accessibility is incredible, especially for the price. And the CARA function, which allows the user to upload pleadings and briefs to search for relevant authorities is amazing. I am duly impressed and have recommended Casetext to my friends and colleagues.

CONS

The software could be improved by including more practice guide materials.

Reasons for switching to Casetext

Casetext provides more content at a substantial cost savings.

Excellent Value for the Money

PROS

I like that I can find cases almost as soon as they're reported. Also, I like the brief checking feature. That's been helpful. I find it easy to identify other cases nationwide that would be helpful to my work.

CONS

I'd like Casetext to have legislative histories and more secondary materials when there isn't case law available.

Reasons for switching to Casetext

It was less expensive, and I could drop cases directly into my case management software (Clio).

Great document management software!

PROS

The flexibility of CARA is my favourite feature, and how straightforward it is to set up to align with each organisation's specific needs. I find it very user friendly. The Generis team are also very collaborative with a real "can do" attitude to our business challenges and always come up with innovative solutions and new ways that we could use their tool to help streamline our activities.

CONS

I would like to see more investment into AI type engines within this tool and the ability to mine information from documents, auto-classify, etc.

Reason for choosing Casetext

More advanced tool and better flexibility to meet our business needs

Casetext is Really Coming Into Its Own

Very good. There are still some areas that need improvement.

PROS

This is a fantastic, lower-cost alternative to Lexis and Westlaw which also has certain innovative tools of its own that are well worth the time to get to know. In addition, the developers are quite keen to help and to understand practitioners' needs -- indeed, several team members are or were practitioners, apparently.

CONS

Results appear in a pane on the lefthand side of the screen. There are boxes where you can check or uncheck, say, a jurisdiction, or statute set, etc. That all works well. But then, to the right of whatever results have been returned, you will see the number of, for example, cases responsive to your search query. Clicking on that number operates the same as unclicking the box, and not to open up, selectively, those results. That I do not like. Casetext does not need BOTH a box to check or uncheck a source or jurisdiction AND a way to do the same by checking on the number of results returned, and so should make use of the number of results returned to allow the user to open up just those results (and not all others), so to, example, see the lists of all cases returned by the search in the SDNY, or whatever. In addition, some of the cases appear with errors -- albeit rarely. More frequently, a case will not cross-reference or show pagination for a parallel reporter, or can be found in one reporter only, but not the other, parallel produce. Also, sometimes cases will be flagged for negative treatment inaccurately. For example, in one instance it reported that a U.S. Supreme Court case had been superseded by a district court opinion from the Federal Supplement. Obviously, that's not how it works, and the particular Supreme Court case in question remains the key case for guidance on the particular fuzzy topic involved -- here it was a facet of RICO law.

Reason for choosing Casetext

I did not "switch" exactly. I added Casetext and find I rely upon it the most.

Great Value

I like it for my normal legal research for federal and state criminal cases, but I also really appreciate that I have access to other states outside of my jurisdiction. And I wasn't charged an arm and a leg like Westlaw prices.

PROS

The value. I've looked at a number of other legal research subscriptions and this was by far the cheapest. But even though it wasn't too expensive it still seems to have most of (if not all) of what Lexis and Westlaw have. I also saw they have a brief bank. I've never used it, but now that I figured out they do, I want to use it.

CONS

I don't have many complaints about the product. I would like more training so that I am using it properly and to its full potential, but that is more on me and not taking the time to fully dig around the website.

Reason for choosing Casetext

Best product for the price.

Reasons for switching to Casetext

Casemaker came with my bar association membership, but I did not like it. It was difficult to use and I wasn't confident in the search results. I found Casetext online when I was searching for a reasonably priced alternative. I used the free trial and liked the ease of use and the amount of access to state and federal cases and statutes.

CaseText Overview

I have been quite pleased with my decision to switch to CaseText, and have no intention to change, although I have been courted by other companies, even recently.

PROS

First, I must admit that the price was quite attractive, but I was skeptical as to what it might provide. However, I was soon quite pleasantly surprised by the breadth of the information that was available to me, and the relative ease I had to be able to gain access. I found the use of CARA especially useful in instances, and found CaseText overall much more friendly and expedient than either Lexis or West products, both of which I have previously used. I have actually recommended CaseText to several of my colleagues.

CONS

I really do not have any criticism of the software except there are times I apparently do not phrase things that immediately lead to results, but I attribute that to my lack of knowledge about using the software, not the software itself. I refer to CaseText when I have an issue I need to brief of need a quite citation for, but I do not use it every day.

Reasons for switching to Casetext

The price was a factor, and CaseText offered me a great deal more information than I was receiving from Lexis. The agent was also quite friendly, and the startup information was quite helpful. I probably need a refresher course, because I know I do not take advantage of all CaseText offers. I found CaseText easier to use

Great Alternative to Lexis or Westlaw

I used replaced Lexis with this when opening my solo practice due to cost concerns. Based on the free trial I believed that Casetext would be comparable to Lexis. The annual cost for this program was 1/12 the cost of my Lexis subscription. It's been worth ever penny.

PROS

I love that the search feature is similar to Lexis, which is what I had used for my entire career of 15 years. It is easy to use, easy to filter results and search terms are highlighted for ease of reference.

CONS

Sometimes I have to play with the natural language search a little more to get the results I am after but it's not so difficult that I would switch programs. I just have to work at it a little more. It would be helpful to have a pay-per-search for public records; I don't use it so often that I would want to pay for the annual subscription but would pay per use because I could pass that on to an individual client.

Reason for choosing Casetext

Casetext was $500/year and Lexis was $500/month. There was no comparison.

Reasons for switching to Casetext

Cost concerns.

A brilliant alternative to Lexis, Westlaw, or Bloomberg.

PROS

Just as functional as the big names but for a fraction of the cost.

CONS

It's minor (and it may be user error), but I wish I could bring up specific California Code Sections as quickly as I can find them on Bing or Google.

Reason for choosing Casetext

I was very familiar with Westlaw, Lexis, and Bloomberg because we used them all in law school. Once I got out and started practicing on my own, I realized that (1) Google Scholar was just not going to cut it; and (2) the other guys were just way too expensive for a new lawyer just beginning to put a practice together. I somehow stumbled across Casetext and decided to give them a try—and I'm glad I did. Casetext has all of the functionality of the big three, is a fraction of the cost, and the customer service is phenomenal. I constantly recommend Casetext to my contemporaries and I can't speak highly enough about this service.

A No-Brainer.

I've stopped using its competitors/contemporaries for primary source legal research. It is just a cleaner, more versatile product for such purposes

PROS

Casetext is quite versatile, is very reasonably priced, is simple to use despite not being a simplistic product, has great tech support, and is constantly being improved. It is everything I (and you should) look for in a legal research tool.

CONS

The biggest con was that it did not provide state regulatory materials, but that is one of the improvements that has been subsequently added. It would be nice to have secondary sources of research as well, but that would not doubt significantly increase the cost of the product.

Legal Easier

The information to provide great briefs and pleadings for my clients in many aspects of the law.

PROS

The thoroughness of Casetext is what I like most about this software. I have experience with other legal software, but there is a surprising comfort and confidence that comes with using Casetext. So many legal writers (attorneys, paralegals, etc.) merely use the "common" cases to complete motions and briefs - many times not even checking to see if they are truly applicable to the case at hand. Casetext helps you find the right case for the job - and, allows you to find what is wrong/inappropriate about other's citings.

CONS

They have just improved a "con" by enabling the parallel case button in the program. An excellent tool to upgrade to.

Reason for choosing Casetext

The great price for a more thorough product/tool.

Reasons for switching to Casetext

Excessive price for the "privilege" of using their program/tool.

Senior Lawyer doing Research

Better than other computer legal research systems I have used, but I do miss the traditional methods of research

PROS

I am a Senior Lawyer who has started doing research 50 years ago. My how things have changed since then. I have found that Casetext has been helpful in specialized areas of Estate Planning and Probate. If I have a specialized code section or other aspect of a case I can usually find some authority on points. I think it is as good as any other computerized system for less money.

CONS

Since I was originally trained using the legal digest and case books, I still feel more comfortable using these tools to do legal or other types of research. I can get overwhelmed with authorities or cases that are not quite on point.
