HipChat is a cloud-based collaboration solution that allows teams to connect to chat messengers and video chats in order to facilitate group communication. It is primarily designed for technology and media domain.

HipChat enables users to share screens with colleagues to foster collaboration in real time. Users can drag-and-drop files from desktops or online drives to share with colleagues. It also offers the ability to create multiple chat rooms for teams or clients, send alerts and chat invitations in the form of message notifications and screen popups.

Hipchat allows admins to add and delete users from a particular chat room, change user roles, manage credential security and more. The admin can also enable and disable selected features within a chat room, set file sharing restrictions for users and more. The solution integrates with third-party applications such as JIRA, Bitbucket, GitHub and Zendesk.

It is priced on an annual subscription basis.

We used this software in the office. It's wonderful for in-office communications. We can easily send messages when we send over customer calls and have conversations with multiple departments at once. Perfect for quick questions, updates, etc. Definitely recommended for larger offices.

Cons

I don't really have any cons to this product, I never experienced any problems. The only thing is that the conversations don't get saved forever but that's the point of it being for quick chat communication. If you are discussing important information that needs to be re-looked at that's when you would use email or another platform.

For starters stock emoji game is strong. The ability to easily and programatically turn up anonymous private rooms for customers is huge. This is something lacking in almost every other competitive product. APIs are easy to use. Tons of third party integrations so you can easily alert, monitor, and notify from all your apps.

Cons

Not too many gripes apart form service interruptions which can be frustrating, but also things happen and just helps to have backup communication methods in distributed workforces.

Hipchat provides the ability to instantly collaborate with colleagues anywhere in the world to communicate information, ask questions, or disseminate information to a group. The ability to add images and send formatted code snippets adds significant value to this product.

Cons

It would be nice its it had more skins than just the light and dark. The information with the dark skin is difficult to read. One other minor issue is that it will sometimes lose network connection and you have to restart it to get the connection back.

Pros

Very simple to use, intuitive (for the most part), offers calling ability (very useful for international teams), easy file sharing, etc. Also offers fun emojis that every team can customize and add their own. Overall very good reliability, and very efficient tool.

Cons

Sometimes HipChat logs you out accidentally/automatically, with no notification (until you switch back to tab) which is annoying. Calling can sometimes have minor connectivity issues, but for the most part is stable. Customization and functionalities could be improved by adding more options (like sorting chats easier, etc.)

HipChat does have some good integrations and does function as a basic collaboration tool. It has decent customizations and allows for multiple teams to collaborate. It also is a closely tied to JIRA with can be useful when discussing deployments.

Cons

Overall it seems like HipChat is just banking that you will use it because you use JIRA. We have found Slack to be more flexible and it drives higher user engagement internally which is the most important metric when launching a new collaboration platform.

This software is great for communicating around the office. We have chats going all day long with remote workers. It's a very smart choice for small businesses who collaborate and may not be side by side.

Cons

There are no functionality cons that I can think of. Some of our team members like to send back emojis and we'd love to see Bitmoji added to the software. It would personalize use much further!

I have not used Hipchat competitors extensively so I cannot compare features or anything like that, but I would say I am very satisfied with Hipchat. I work remotely and find that I use hipchat more often than one on one conversations even when I'm in the office.

Pros

Creating a new room for multi-person semi-private conversations is simple. I use the search capabilities all the time to find previous conversations. It works well.

Cons

Every so often they experience down time. We haven't been too disrupted by that though. Alerts seem to be confused when using both the desktop app and mobile app. There will be times when messages go unnoticed for days because hipchat didn't properly alert the recipient. A simple email or resending the chat message alleviates the problem.

HipChat was the primary form of communication at my last office. It was a daily headache. It would consistently fail to notify me when I received messages, and the message interface would hardly ever load correctly the first time I opened it.
The biggest issue with HipChat was the poor video calling features. I had weekly video conferences with supervisors, and HipChat managed to last through the entire meeting about 10% of the time. The majority of the time, it failed to start entirely.
If you're looking for a communication system at your work place, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

We use this platform primarily to facilitate internal communication between engineering teams and in general, I found this to be a very frictionless way to chat on a large scale. Rooms work seamlessly and the ability for people to just join and leave rooms works very well.

It's video chat feature is limited - I would have preferred that they rather integrate into something like Google Hangouts which is more widespread.

In particular, I enjoy all the emojis and animations that make team communication a little more fun and exciting. If I am stuck and need help from a colleague I can easily type in a message and get a quick response back.

Pros

My team at my work uses this for asking each other questions while supporting our clients. This is very convenient for us because we can include my whole team which is in two different countries. I love the capability that you can easy put in images or GIF's. Also you can be a part of many different groups and easily switch back and forth.

I really enjoy the ability to integrate Bitbucket to Hipchat. It's a great communication for teams to get work done! I like the ability to add alerts and have team members acknowledge the alerts as well. It's a great productivity tool and the connectivity is awesome.

Cons

Something that I wish HipChat would implement would be a dark theme. The layout is very white and at night it can really mess with my eyes. The ability to change your HipChat theme would be incredibly useful.

Pros

So much to like about this. I love the ability to communicate to whatever team I have set up; and not necessarily everyone else. We work on many different products with different teams - this software is perfect because I can send a message for everyone on Team X, and Team Y never has to see it.

Cons

Sometimes the video sharing takes a little bit longer, but that's about it. This is a very easy tool to use that is very beneficial.

It involves all features for effective chat and communication. Videoconferencing works superbly. It enables an internal private chat with the feature of instant messaging which is very useful. The chat can not only consist of individual members but is also open to team or group chatting services. One of the best features of the application is its cloud-based storage. All the text, data, images and messages don’t need to occupy your system space and can be stored directly in the cloud. This can help to maintain and improve system performance and also avoid the storage of any malicious files received on the PC. The message history is searchable so you can find relevant information as and when required.

Cons

The application had a lot of features discontinued due to bad functionality; some of them were useful though. The chat history search function doesn't work properly for older messages. It keeps on loading when we search an old message in the history.

Nearly forgot about this piece of software. We used to use it for quick internal communication amongst the team to ping someone to update their tasks or get updates from peers. However we have since used slack for the communications as its available virtually everywhere with offline notifications. Slack and atlassian have joined forces for internal communication. HipChat is being discontinued. If still available, it is a quick solution to pop a notification to a colleague whilst working on the admin part of tasks.

Cons

Integration to chrome can only either be enabled or disabled by administrators for single people. It does not make use of group policies therefore when you start out, you do not get browser notifications. There is not automatic sign on. You have to sign on at least 3 times a day in order to be able to use the built in application. This leaves room for missed communication. (Atlassian is partnering with slack, issues raised previously would have been resolved by Slack.)

You don't have to go through the usual rigmarole of installation procedures like other apps. Availability of 30 day free trial version helps to better learn how it works There are freedom to make as much discussion rooms as one needs even in the free plan. There is no time lag during video calls. The notification popups are very well noticeable and looks very cool as well.

Cons

Even though Hipchat is a good application, there are few ,imitations. In videcalling, the screen sharing feature is not functioning properly. The notification popup is not accurate when there is lot of events in the morning.

Pros

I like Hipchat because it makes conversations with my workmates so easy. The conversation history is stored and is always available. The actual chatting part of hipchat is great and what I love is the fact that you can use emoji's on your conversation. It also allows you to send images and it's good that you have an option to have a private conversation.

Cons

It would be nice to see if hipChat can add more emoji's . And I hope hipchat will give us the option to delete a conversation or history.
