OneNote Software

Microsoft OneNote is a digital note taking app that can be accessed via Android, Chrome, Windows, iOS and Mac devices. The solution is well-suited for individuals attending numerous meetings per week and working on multiple collaborative projects.

OneNote offers deep search functionality for all notes stored in its database. Users can also store and organize audio recordings that are in a searchable format and can be integrated with other Microsoft Office products.

OneNote allows users to take handwritten notes with the help of a stylus or fingertip and can also convert these notes to digital text. Important ideas or points can be highlighted by using various shapes and colors.

The solution has the ability to embed other Microsoft Office files into a note. They can then be easily edited by OneNote users. OneNote offers cloud-based storage and allows users to easily toggle between separate but synced up enterprise and personal accounts.

Better than Evernote

Ease-of-use

Pros

I used to use Evernote, but there’s a limit when using it for free on how many devices you can have their app installed and syncing with the service. OneNote does everything I need with a phone, tablet, and computer. It also has more formatting features for formatting your notes and texts than other services have. Organizing notes and tabs are incredibly easy and helpful. I love the ability to use a surface pen to write the notes or to use checkboxes to make to-do items in the same note instead of needing to use something else.

Cons

Most of the time, I don’t have any issues with syncing between devices using OneNote. Every once in a while, there are conflicts with it not saving to the cloud properly. When OneNote loads the differing notes, it’s not always easy to consolidate the differences.

- OneNote works great with OneDrive for real-time collaboration and markups of project notebooks.
- Can create multiple chapters and pages within one workbook which is very handy for various stages of design and construction projects.

Cons

- Microsoft's customer support is always a hindrance to their services. I always just try and search for answers on other sites before I use Microsoft as a last attempt.

Ease-of-use

N/A
Pros

The software is easy to use - intuitive so you can start getting organized quickly. I love that you can add different types of information to your notes - i.e., bring in other documents, pictures, etc. so I can house all my information in one spot. It was a great platform to gather notes as I transitioned into a new role that required a lot of changes to keep organized. And, when I had a new employee start - it was easy to share my helpful tips to naviagating accounting/new company with the new employee (i.e., emailing a page)

Cons

It can be distracting for others when you are taking notes in a meeting. Not the software's issue - just if you have "old school" employees they may think you are not paying attention and multi-tasking.

Save it, share it and collaborate, but not the best available

Ease-of-use

Value for Money

Great old-school style application with a slew of collaborative uses, but is easily replaced with a bit of training and knowledge of other products available even within the Office suite. Does make a good place to generate a simple KMS type storage space with shareable information, but limited on the functionality sets within. Terrific matured tool with imaginative ideas if not seeking a long learning curve or difficult implementation or collaboration.

Pros

- Ease of Use is the biggest plus of this product from Microsoft
- Easily deployed with every current version of home and business based Office 2013 and above.
- User training is extremely minimal as the functionality is otherwise limited to a word based document sharing site.
- Available to all members of an office 365 license allowing Teams integration (otherwise the better product offering)

Cons

- Limited functionality unless integrated into other products/applications (SharePoint, Microsoft Teams)
- Matured but outdated in its uses. More of a Task List or notes maintainer.
- Shareable storage is a nice have, but is easily replaceable with slew of other product sets today (OneDrive, DropBox, Teams, Etc.)

Pros

For a writer, OneNote is indispensable. When writing, you want to have an outline fleshed out so that once you start writing, it's easy to connect the dots since you've already done the pre-work. OneNote enables this easily. I can create separate sections for Characters, Outlines, Plotting, and Settings. Within those sections, I have pages such as Character 1, 2, 3 etc. Arc 1, 2, 3, Cities, Shops, Homes. Once I start writing, I keep the outlines section open, where I break it into 5 10,000 word pages. If I need any information from the other sections or pages, it's as easy as clicking over to them. Since I started doing this, plotting and outlining is a breeze.

Cons

Exporting as a PDF isn't available online, you have to have the local for that. Sometimes it doesn't sync well, so I have to manually re-sync the two to get things back in order. My biggest con though is that my sort order doesn't stay put. Whenever I log out, the next day, my sections aren't in the order I put them in, so I have to go back and re-organize them. It's definitely a pain that, while it's a small issue, when you do it every single day it adds up to a rather large annoyance.

Pros

I'm usually not a fan of the MS products, but OneNote is something special. MS has managed to make what Dropbox Paper did only a decade later - a flexible canvas where you can do virtually anything. It's great for note-taking, for attaching images/screenshots, annotate them and generally work in any creative fashion that suites you.

Cons

As usual, MS products don't work that great if you're using a browser-based web app. It's certainly worth going for a desktop app, but I don't have a Windows PC at disposal all the time. A linux version would be nice (but we can stop expecting that) or at least a faster web version would help.

Pros

Microsoft OneNote is a great application for note-taking because of it's flexibility in adding information onto a note page. I find myself either writing, drawing, or pasting notes into the note page and they all work beautifully. OneNote also has notebooks which are divided into sections which are further divided into pages and this allows for a wide range of sorting. Overall, this application is a great one for notes.

Cons

OneNote offers many different features, some of which may not be of use but can appear from time to time during note-taking. The indent feature would sometimes turn words into a table format which can be annoying to fix at times. Otherwise, OneNote is a great application and should be used by people who are looking to take notes on a regular basis.

Being able to use the search criteria to look for a specific document is very important for me. There are numerous ways staffs can write up a document and I don't have time to browse to each one to find out the one sentence that I am looking for. With one OneNote, type in the search and it will browse to the documents that you want to be on the lookout for.

Its very easy to keep information organized because it allows you to create different tabs, this way you can make one for each subject, and then inside you can make more tabs. Also, allows to insert all kinds of information, like text, images (screen captures and such), graphics, sheets and more.

The files can be synchronized with One Drive, making them available from anywhere and at the same time having a backup of them.

You can configure a password to make them more secure.

At first it can be a bit confusing, but after the initial setup its actually very easy to use, and since I've started using it I havent found any cons, it does what I require of it perfectly.

Pros

Text and handwriting in photos can be searched for. It automatically skew-corrects and color-corrects camera photos of a slideshow projection. People write amazing plug-ins for it. I use this hourly at home and at work, for keeping track of all kinds of information, including collaborating with my family and team members on the same notebook. It's awesome

Cons

There isn't a built-in way to view notes by date created or edited, but there are third-party plug-ins that help with that. It requires OneDrive (or Sharepoint, Teams, etc.) to collaborate efficiently, which I'm not a big fan of
