Slack Software

Slack is a cloud-based project collaboration and team interaction tool designed to facilitate communication across organizations. The solution caters to various industries, including media, research, technology, education, financial services, retail, transport and logistics.

Slack provides public channels for members across organizations to start conversations. Private channels enable interaction within smaller teams, and direct channels help send messages directly to colleagues.

Slack incorporates feeds from social media into the application and blends them with ongoing conversations in various channels. Files such as PDFs, images, documents and spreadsheets can be shared via drag and drop.

Slack archives messages, notifications, files (as well as the contents of files) and projects, all of which can be searched for later. Slack allows users to customize their notifications and reduce their scope. All changes are reflected in the native applications available for iOS and Android.

Overall great software. Could be more user intuitive.

Pros

It has a nice layout, and the ability to have multiple channels is very nice as well. The DM feature is also very helpful. Seamless interfacing between mobile and desktop versions.

Cons

The first few times I used the app, it was confusing. Even at this point, I still struggle with several of the features.

You should get it! There is a free version if you want to try it out.

Pros

It is an awesome way for internal communication with my team. Its great for sharing files, leave messages, or have a small conversation without getting out of your desk. I love that file sharing is super fast.
Despite this tool is used for work stuff, it creates a fun environment, with emoticons and GIFs.
I like that you can create different #channels (groups) for discusing different subjects.
Also, I like that it can be costumizable with many other apps.

Cons

I actually like it a lot. I think my least favorite thing was the slackbot, but I understand it is their way to add a help center.

Pros

I love using Slack for my team. it makes it really easy to communicate and it allows for new individuals being on boarded to find past information with ease instead of an email chain

The only con is getting people to be effective with the application. Slack is a great first step and is better than GroupMe

Additional and more robust integrations with Salesforce where we can pull in case data into slack and vice-a-versa send activities from slack to cases.

Pros

Ability to communicate with internal teams, integrations with a lot of different business and IT systems and ease of use. We use slack between our tier 1 and tier 2 support teams where we do real time case deflection. Since we launched this process, we have seen a 30% increase in our first contact resolution.

Cons

Not enough integrations with Salesforce, JIRA, etc. I would like some additional analytics like counts of messages within a channel per day/ member.

Pros

It has a casual interface with gifs and emojis. You can create temporary groups then later change to private groups or messages. Also, you can save message history.

One thing Slack doesn't have is voice chat. And I don't think it would work well in for a more formal organization, too casual.

Slack is GREAT!

Pros

Slack has been very valuable to our company. It is a great and easy way to communicate thorughout the day. Either through channels and announcing things to everyone OR through direct message. We also love the app on our phones

Cons

I cannot think of any cons. Maybe if you are apart of many channels, your channel list gets long and confusing.

Pros

Slack really is the pinnacle of communication apps for organizations large or small. I have used this as a group of friends, as a business, and as a nonprofit tool for my organization to stay in contact with board members. The channel and group features are top notch and the ability to use web and mobile applications is invaluable

Cons

Sometimes the process can be somewhat difficult for inviting and onboarding new members as the onboarding website is a little different than the actual site itself.

You can easily setup channels for specific topics, send personal messages to an individual user/team member, or you can setup groups for different projects.

- It's expensive, especially if you need some of the features contained within the Standard or Plus subscriptions. This is hard to overcome for small businesses, and may be more palatable with perpetual licensing.

Pros

It has been fulfilling our purpose for the last 5 years. Be it a project discussion, topic relevant discussion, announcements, or updates relevant to what's happening in other tools like PMS, Google docs, etc. - Slack is our first and last to go software. Team communication hasn't been this much easier.

Cons

Sometimes it feels like a memory eater app. It takes much time to load the app when you're a part of 5-10 different slack teams. This could be much better.

For a paid account, this application is one of the best options to be used to communicate if one is working with a team. Collaboration is quite simplified

Pros

Features such as bots help to keep a schedule, overview the work done by the people, setting targets and achieving them. Easy to share code snippets, media files, and other documents.

Cons

The max capacity of messages for a free account is quite less and so you lose the history. Also, the storage available is quite less for the free account.

Value for Money

I think a platform like this is important for collaboration within and across teams. It has been especially important to our teams in which more than half of our staff work remotely.

Pros

I like that Slack allows users to set up channels to keep conversations on topic. We've set up group discussions on business and non-business related topics and our employees like to share information and pictures with each other in this group setting.

Cons

The only issue I've run into is that you have to have the app open in order to get notices. I know that seems basic, but some of the people I personally communicate with don't always open up their app, so IMs can sit for hours.

Slack is a great platform for project collaboration. Stop using emails to communicate about current projects -- it's a bad idea! An app like Slack is helpful for conducting the necessary communication without it getting lost in an already too-busy email inbox.

Slack over all has helped increase our communication and allowed for more organization and priority setting with in those communications.

Pros

I like best that Slack gives me the ability to choose my involvement in each thread of a work space. Not only can I turn on or off notifications, Slack gives the ability to customize notification. I can be a part of a thread only when needed.

Cons

Though it is very well developed software. Changing settings can be difficult if you are not used to the system. Options are not overly obvious and you do have to search quite a bit for what you are looking for.

My experience has been fairly positive. It seems like Slack takes great pains in ensuring that I am able to easily sign into multiple workspaces at once. It has apps for Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android (all platforms that I use), and the user interface and experience is consistent between operating systems.

Pros

I think the feature that blows me away the most is the mobile app setup. Once you install the app, you are sent a "magic link" that sets up all of your Slack workspaces all at once. This is a huge time saver if you have a lot of Slack workspaces.

Cons

I'm not a fan of having to do the sign up process each time I want to join a new workspace. It would be lovely if I could have one Slack account and just add workspaces to that account as I need them.

Pros

Slack is a lifesaver for easily managing communication within different organizations and teams in one place. Slackbot reminders make it easy to stay on top of ongoing tasks and app integrations like Trello, Google Drive and Zapier are super helpful too.

Cons

There is a limit of 10k messages on the free plans. If you have a large or very active team you may find you can't search for older messages.

Just wonderful! I couldn't recommend enough!

Pros

We switched over from GroupMe to Slack, and it was an absolutely wonderful decision. I have never looked back. Slack is awesome because it allows you to establish different channels underneath the umbrella of one organization. For example, if you have different committees, each could create their own Slack channel, so that all of the committee business still stays within the confines of the app, but it does not clog up the general feed of information. For our organization, we have multiple Slack channels running to keep people on task in the "General" feed, but allow for inter-organization bonding. Slack was just a wonderful, wonderful choice and I couldn't say enough good things about it.

Cons

The only thing I experienced was some problems with the functionality of uploading files, but it wasn't ultimately too much of a deterrent. Perhaps with a little more time, we could have better understood this issue and fixed it.

Overall, this can be a powerful tool if used correctly. I can this being used in education to share accomplishments or keep teachers in direct contact with IT personnel. I have considered these options myself.

Pros

This is a great application to help keep everyone intact and in communication with one another. I love the ability to set up separate groups of contact, or split people who may share multiple roles within the various groups. Slack takes the old-school chatroom feel and spruces it up with direct messaging, group messaging, and content sharing. Love that Google Drive is integrated and I can pull files/documents from my drive right into the chat. The chat history helps you revert back to something you may have missed and the ability to pin a file of importance is great!

Cons

Since it depends on how you anticipate using a product like this I don't really have any. My goal in using Slack was to stay in contact with everyone, share highlights, and be available 24/7 to each other when needed. Slack accomplishes all of those things in a neat and organized way. My only gripe... cleaning up your Slack needs to be easier. Or leaving groups you are no longer a part of/don't want to be in.

Pros

I like how easy it is to create channels and chat with groups of coworkers, or one on one. I like adding GIFs to my messages. I like that I am able to chat with coworkers no matter where they are, and collaborate across departments and even continents!

Outstanding tool. By utilizing Slack, we have been able to cut down on project cycle times by making sure that everyone is on the same page. No more "I didn't see the email" excuses etc.

Pros

Slack is a feature-rich tool that does a great job in allowing teams, regardless of location, to communicate and collaborate in realtime. We find that being able to create separate groups/channels in the tool is a big plus for our business, allowing us to communicate internally, as well as externally with our clients. We are using email less and less as Slack has proven to be much more effective.

Cons

It's not a huge deal, but there is a bit of a learning curve when determining channel set-up, direct messaging, etc. Fortunately, Slack provides really good tutorials that help significantly.

Slack is great for team collaboration and communication especially among employees who work remotely. We use the channels as well as the direct messages for our company. The channels allows us to keep everyone involved in a certain committee, department, team, etc in the loop on happenings and the direct messages work more as your typical chat feature. We do also take advantage of the screenshare option for our remote employees as well.

Cons

The only things I see areas for improvement are the search feature (trying to find previously shared conversations, screenshots, links, etc, and the notifications for following certain threads. I seem to miss certain messages more often when someone starts a new thread - it's just not as obvious or in your face as a general message.

Pros

What I like most about Slack is the way it is deployed in the cloud. That way, I was able to implement this tool in less than three hours. Finally, Slack has web conferencing feature, which reduces in-person meetings.

Cons

One big challenge is the cost of getting a genuine version of Slack.
