R.O. Writer is an on-premise auto shop management solution suitable for small to midsize businesses. It is compatible with Windows operating systems and provides tools to manage time tracking, service writing, accounting and inventory.

Users can draft estimates, schedule work orders and accept payment from customers through a single interface. Communication tools assist with customer outreach. R.O. Writer includes an employee time clock to track technicians' time and calculate their efficiency. It can further schedule an appointment with the technician and send appointment reminders through email.

A Smart eCat tool integrates with part suppliers and allows shops to make purchases. Users can search for parts and order online.  R.O. Writer enables service dealers to connect multiple stores through a single solution and search invoices by region or store.

R.O. Writer offers customer support over the phone, via email and through on-premise training sessions.

I would not recommend this product to anyone.

Pros

The smart E-Cat function when it works. The customer support is so poor that I can not say anything else positive about this software.

Cons

The customer support is awful. The tier one technicians can rarely help you and tier two is slow to respond if at all. I have frequent file corruptions.

Good, but uninspired program. Decently easy to learn. Does everything we need it to. Better than paper system we had previously.

Cons

Tech support. There are other issues, but the tech support is very bad. Don't get me wrong. The tech support isn't so completely horrible that you will be forced to switch to a different program. It's just good enough that you will probably stay using their program because you don't want to go through with retraining your technofeeb employees on a new system.

Let me elaborate on how bad they are:
No online knowledgebase.
No user forum
No email blasts on known issues occurring
Calls to tech support have approximately 20% chance of being kicked out of the queue and hung up on because nobody picked up the phone after 5 minutes of waiting.
Calls to tech support have a >25% chance of not returning your call. Yes, I really am saying they sometimes do not call me back. Frequency of failure does increase as the severity of the problem decreases. In other words, they've always called me back on critical issues. But on very minor issues, they've failed as much as half the time to call me back.
Calls to tech support rarely reach someone who can fix your problem. They almost always have to call you back.
Tech support consistently and repeatedly fails to return your system environment back to it's original configuration after remotely logging in. For example: regedit is often left running and UAC is never turned back on before they log out of your system.

The second worst problem is lack of user input. There are several areas in the program that work...but require many extra steps that could be reduced with minor coding additions.

Can see multiple vendor pricing at one time. Can see vehicle history for mulitiple locations. The waiting on line music is nice.

Cons

The constant problems. We have two locations both locations have problems with the software operating. The waiting for tech support. Loading inventory was actually told to shut the program down after each item typed in and restart because maybe we were over working the program?? Could go on...

More freedom, more profits and less time at home performing book keeping.

Pros

You can use software with all modules open allowing you to write checks, perform point of sale, check inventory, customer history, A/P, A/R, anything you need to do with out closing and opening different programs or software.

The ability to customize forms, letters, make specialty packages such as oil changes, tire rotation and customize to any need flawlessly.

This software has been a real turn around for my business. It almost eliminates additional office personal. Before this software I would spend 3-4 hours on my week end performing and organizing paper work. This software does most of that on it's own.

I have recommended this software to several shop owners because I truly believe what it did for me and my Business.

Cons

Very small numbers/letters, hard to read. I suggested high lighting the last 8th of V.I.N. On occasions we have a network issue that will not let me work on host computer unless I shut down computers in shop. This happens about every 45-60 days.

The added features, Smart eCat, catalogs, ease of estimating, user friendly. Appointments, the little features, promised times, waiting, service reminders. Marketing feature is great, follow ups

Cons

Cannot print or export customer info. Some parts of marketing are not so user friendly, seem to be having a problem decoding 2015 vehicles

Knowing parts are getting billed out.

Pros

It tracks what we sell and it makes it very easy to bill out correct parts and enter inventory. Like the ease of what is offered. Better then having to type tickets seperately.

Cons

Nothing that I am aware of. I(Ruth) need to learn the in's & out's of the total use of it Allen the manager does very well with it.

We have been using ROWriter since 2005. It has proven itself to have been a good, solid system. It does have its quirks, but overall, it keeps our shop running. We operate two separate facilities and sharing information between the two has been a major priority. We have a VPN and we use VMWare to setup separate drives. We are ready to welcome 2.0 as soon as possible. We have been waiting to implement Central Service (so we can share between both locations) when we upgrade to 2.0. We are also interested in implementing ROTouch. ROWriter is a very user friendly system. Our service department likes the ease of using Scheduler and being able to easily convert the appointments to either an open RO or an estimate. Being able to add notes pertaining to the customer and/or the vehicle is a function we use greatly. Our parts department likes the ease of use of the Inventory module and the Epicor cataloging. The ability to issue stock orders with a couple of clicks saves time and hassle. Myself as manager like the ease of the Reporting module. Pulling up reports and being able to ascertain which technician worked on which vehicle easily are features that get used multiple times per day. We have and will continue to recommend ROWriter to other shops. ROWriter's sales and support personnel have been very helpful throughout the years and we look forward to retaining our partnership with ROWriter for years to come.

Cons

The program is too large to run over the VPN, too bad. At this point in time, I use RDP protocol to view and print between both facilities. It's a little cumbersome and ties up a terminal. We have been waiting quite a while for version 2.0 to be released. Version 1.28 was ok except for the constant interlockling between terminals and total shutdowns at times. I wrote batch files to backup the mdb every two hours so we will not lose much information just in case of total failure, which has happened before. We upgraded to version 1.31 to get ready for 2.0. 1.31 doesn't have the interlocking issues or errors and shutdowns like 1.28, but it is very slow. We are currently waiting to install the newest version 2.0 which should cure all of our issues.

R.O. Writer makes it very easy to build the most accurate repair orders. It gives the user and customers a no questions asked estimate. The accounting side of R.O. Writer helps us get our costs and margins down to a point where the customer is satisfied, and the business still makes money. Smart Ecat makes it fast and effortless to get up to date labor times, part pricing,
availability and vehicle specific fluid amounts. The customer service and training is absolutely amazing. R.O. Writer has exceeded our expectations and it is worth every penny.

Cons

The software is very in depth and has a lot of features . This can take a while to become familiar with the program. However it worth the time it takes to learn.

When I first saw this product I was looking for a software that I could see all my jobs at a quick glance. Every feature I asked for this one had. I pulled the trigger to get trained and have it installed before I hired another service writer. After I had the software mastered there was NO NEED TO HIRE another guy. I am able to quote a job, change the status, and order parts all without picking up the phone once. It saves me enough time I am able to do the work of 3 service writers in half the time.

Cons

RO Writer is perfect. As for the RO touch software there are still bells and whistled that need to be ironed out. But I have been ASSURE by multiple levels of people that they are working on it dillegently. RO Writers price tag is a hard pill to swallow, but I assure thats its worth EVERY penny.

Ability to add as many services and jobs as needed on one ticket for a customer. Also, the ability to look at a customers history and see the cost per mile for them is awesome and helps re-enforce the point that it's cheaper to do maintenance in the long run.

Cons

Sometimes the lookup for parts is a little slow, but it may be due to outside vendors? Other than that all functions are good and easy to use.

Pros

It is very easy to use and have everything you need all in one place. I use this product daily in my Auto repair shop. It is great because i could add on to customers tickets on one computer and my service writer will have the information without having to replay to her what needs to be added. It is also a great for keeping organized with A/P and A/R. Ordering Parts, Keeping inventory and many other features that i use every day.

Cons

there is nothing that i dislike about this product. I would recommend this to everyone in my social network.

Get A.M.S. on board and the Pro's will go way up.
once you start to understand the software the ease of moving around and how you can manipulate to get end results you want starts to flow. there are endless possibilities to what you can make this do. Lots of reports, and controls to help you understand what is going on in your business.

Cons

there are a few quirks, like needing to answer ok to a pop up that is telling you to do something different , when I don't get the result expected and a pop up says " you can't..." why do I need to click ok to shut the box and then do as instructed. some things should be more intuitive from the software side. a second pet peeve is "Smart eCat" screen why will it minimize and go completely out of view but not let you do anything else until you realize you minimized it, then you need to open and then close. just too clunky, don't let it minimize if just going to freeze up the machine anyway.

Lots of reporting capabilities, SmarteCat feature saves lots of time, scheduler is very convenient. Overall it gives us much more capability than our AllData system, and it has also helped us create estimates much faster than before.

Cons

You can't be in SmarteCat and be doing anything anywhere else simultaneously. Similarly, you can not be creating or editing an appointment in the scheduler while editing a part, labor line, vehicle, or customer page in ROWriter.

Able to track our inventory better, able to make sure that we are balanced at the end of the day, and properly pay sales taxes monthly/quarterly.

Pros

Software is very user friendly. Sales rep, was able to demonstrate how we were able to profit more with the software over the old software we were using. We have grown/profited since using the software as well as added more user licenses.

Cons

Not compatible with Apple/Mac. Would like to be able to adjust some wordings without calling CSR's.

Very Powerful, can do many things with it. If you're a techy person you will like all the features of Rowriter, but AMS can guide you through the tech end of it, if you're not techy.

Cons

Pros

It makes me money and saves tons of time. There are many things I like about this but most important is the money and the time. The people at AMS are the best. They know their product and answer their phone.

The only thing that could be better is if it was free. I like the people I have to deal with. It is stable and dependable.

Pros

It has a lot of useful features. The accounting side is confusing but in depth. You are better off with a different program.

Cons

Once installed the program continued to freeze. I was told to buy a high speed router. After that the program continued to freeze the computer. After a year of not having full functionality as well as the freezing we decided to go elsewhere. There tech support can not fix all the issues you will have and they will continue to charge you for things you have not received.
