Easy to configure on a Synology NAS to backup to the Cloud

This was an excellent experience, from signing up to installing -- the whole process took hardly any time.

PROS

I loved the fact that there is a native app available for our Synology DS220+ NAS. This app made installing and backing up our data very simple.

CONS

It's mildly irritating to have to login to iDrive from the Synology dashboard each time I visit the status page.

Reason for choosing IDrive

iDrive offered a native app for Synology, and excellent data storage rates.

Reasons for switching to IDrive

BackBlaze didn't have a native app available for Synology devices.

iDrive - it's worth the time

iDrive checks all the boxes to having an online backup solution. Even though the initial backup could take considerably longer than expected, the future incremental backups and affordability are worthwhile.

PROS

iDrive is a great choice when considering an affordable and reliable backup solution in the cloud.

CONS

The initial upload for a large amount of data 3TB+ could take multiple days depending on your location.

Reasons for switching to IDrive

I switched from OneDrive because I need a backup solution and not immediate and fast cloud access. Although iDrive can be used in a way OneDrive is designed, the affordability of iDrive and using it strictly as a backup solution fit my needs perfectly.

Quantity > Quality

PROS

The amount of storage you get for the cost is unparalleled, and ultimately the reason I went with iDrive. You cannot get an equivalent amount of storage for cheaper.

CONS

The UI/UX is lacking. I solely use this as cloud storage to store photo/video during extended travels, which it works well for. But the actual interface is extremely dated. Having better media preview options would be nice.

Reasons for switching to IDrive

The cost per GB is significantly lower with iDrive, allowing me to store more on the go.

8 days and its still not backed up

Horrible. I have a 1.5 terabyte computer and its been backing up 8 days and its still not done. Ive tried turning it off and starting over, pausing, restarting my computer but it just wont speed up. This software is beyond rediculous. 8 days and its still not backed up. 1.5 terabytes is not that much to back up. No way Im renewing.

PROS

setup and price and reviews from trusted person

CONS

It is so slow its ridiculous. Who wants to wait over a week to backup and its still not done.

Security for a small business

We were looking for a new online cloud backup solution, as our old one could not process our card. iDrive came up as a suggested option multiple times. The payment and subscription set up process was painless and easy on iDrive. We were able to download and schedule backup right away. The full backup process took about 5 hours for each laptop device. This is at par with our experience with other such apps. We had some questions based on the error log, and iDrive support got back to us fairly promptly with clear suggestions. Overall happy with this app, which helps us take off our mind from file loss related issues and get on with running our business. I am writing this review based on a request from iDrive.

PROS

Easy to install and schedule backup. No technical knowledge needed UI and instructions are easy to follow Perfect for a small business with limited data and devices The basic plan provides scope for future data needs Different options for scheduling backup means we can 'set it and forget it' Backup can be scheduled for the less busy times Support is excellent and got back with clear and specific answers to our queries within 12 hours and also followed up The iDrive software does not occupy too much memory when processing Was able to purchase and set up subscription for the software without any issues. Other backup options had some issues and were not able to process our credit card.

CONS

Having used various other backup options in the past, we don't find any cons as compared to those other tools.

Reasons for switching to IDrive

We had an issue with renewal and were not able to get the issue resolved quickly.

Positive initial impression

So far very positive. Improvement on other options I have tried.

PROS

Only jut getting started with iDrive. Set up was easy and adding devices similarly so. Really like that I can schedule and pause back ups. Other cloud back up software was not this flexible and would consumer processor and memory when I needed them for other tasks.

CONS

Trying to tell yet if it can back up connected drives?

Reasons for switching to IDrive

Reasons as above. Mostly inability to pause back up. Software was slow, unresponsive and processor demanding.

Simple, reliable, effective, and non-intrusive

Ever since i purchased my Mac Airbook, I have had to keep all my important source code on an external drive because there is not enough room on the main drive. Seeing that external drive just lying out there on the desk next to my workstation, it has always concerned me about what would happen if that drive died. I have most of my source on versioning systems, but not all, and not useful tools and items like that. Since I put iDrive in and have it backing that drive up, I have had zero worries. Now I know my whole system can be nuked out of existence, and I wont lose a thing. That is peace of mind.

PROS

Idrive covers alot of bases for me. I can select individual folders as well as external drives for backups. I can do schedules that just work in the background. Doesnt have any spinners or windows or anything that says "Hey look at me! Im doing something.". It just quietly works in the background, however it is nice to see the once a day message saying, "All done!" and that gives me peace of mind. To top it all off, they provide a cloud sync'd folder so any one off files and special case scenarios I run up against, I can just use that drive and it just works. IDrive cares about performance too. Unlike Google Drive, it does not max out my processor when it is working. In fact, it knows when I am working and will reduce its usage so not to bother me, but when I am away, it will take advantage of that and speed up the backups so it can finish as soon as it can. Very smart.

CONS

Logs could use some help. The log summary list could use a little more detail. It would be nice if the log details were presented in a data grid format so sorting and grouping could be done so you can do things like look at all the Errors together without having to pick them out through all the other messages. At least provide the log in an XLS format so Excel can handle it.

Reason for choosing IDrive

Most important factor was that iDrive just worked! Plain and simple, it just installed and worked for all the reasons I mentioned above. The cost of the plan was also in my budget.

Learning to use IDrive

So far, it seems to be working well. I like having the log so I can see if it works or not. I am really only having it back up what I change rather than everything every day. After having been annoyed by their unwillingness to let me get the 10TB plan for the promotional price on the same day that I signed up for the 5TB plan. I ended up not cancelling and decided to go ahead and try it, figuring I could cancel at the end of the year. I DO want to have a good data backup in place, and this program is highly recommended. So I am now using it and will re-evaluate as I learn more about it and use it in the coming months.

PROS

I liked that IDrive was one of the most widely recommended backup solutions I researched. Having just lost the SSD on my computer and not having a backup, I knew I needed this type of service.

CONS

I am still learning about how to set things up and make sure it does what I need it to do. There is a bit of a learning curve, but I think over time it will be easy to use. The only negative is that on the day I signed up, I realized that I needed the 10TB plan rather than the 5TB plan. Unfortunately the company would not allow me to get the 10TB plan for the promotional price - I was going to have to pay full price for it. Unless I completely cancelled out of my plan and then re-signed up with a different account. That was too much of a hassle so I decided to at least give it a try. I think their customer service could be better, and they could have easily given me the larger plan for the promotional price as I had just signed up that day.

Inexpensive storage with great basic functionality

Pretty good. Upload speeds are limited by my bandwidth and I would definitely use the mail-in Express service if the UK shipping charges were more reasonable, or they had a UK-based upload service. Backups have worked as expected and I hope never to have to use the recovery service for anything other than testing purposes.

PROS

The cost per terabyte is commendably low and was the initial reason I tested iDrive. All the basic functionality was available in the desktop app that I needed - scheduled backups of internal and external media. Initial testing showed that everything worked pretty much as expected 'out of the box' and that backups could be easily restored. I was sufficiently impressed to purchase the software. I've used it to backup about half a terabyte of data so far, with more to be uploaded. Scheduled backups run as expected, or as soon as the machine is turned on. They also run if the machine is sleeping - waking, backing up and sleeping again. During the testing phase I contacted customer support with a relatively trivial query (see comment below re timestamps) and got a prompt answer - that was reassuring.

CONS

All timings by the software use PST (Pacific Standard Time) and a US format timestamp. I'm on the other side of the world and it seems nonsensical for me to schedule a 9 am backup on the 10th of November (10/11/22) to find that the system records it as being made at 3 am on 11/10/22. If backups are daily and no more frequent this shouldn't be an issue, but it could well cause problems (or at least confusion) if backups were more frequent.I would like to see more granularity in the backup scheduling. For example - to set weekly backups for one external drive and daily backups for another. My understanding from the FAQ and help files, together with practical use of the system, is that all network/external drives are handled as a single backup set. The only way to omit one would be to leave it unplugged. In the same way, all local files/folders are handled as a single backup set, again with no granularity. The advantage of this approach is simplicity, the disadvantage is a lack of flexibility. For peace of mind, simplicity is better ... but I'd still like the option of more granularity.

Reason for choosing IDrive

Price and functions. Dropbox has too many and costs too much. Backblaze offers unlimited storage but cost more. I don't have unlimited data and the rate-limiting step was always going to be the upload speeds.

Reasons for switching to IDrive

I've used Dropbox for many years for my research team, with a 10 Tb business account and a 2 Tb personal account. The software was getting less and less easy to use as additional (and - to me - unwanted) functions were added and the desktop client was intrusive and a memory hog. The cost of the storage was also high. With an educational discount I'm paying about one third what I was paying for Dropbox.

Good price for cloud backup and intuitive interface.

I was a little concerned because their introductory price seemed too good to be true… but the service is great and the current annual fee at renewal seems very reasonable.

PROS

I am paranoid about having everything backed up with redundancies. I save everything in a digital format— all of my old family photos have been scanned high res and fixed, family movies, legal and personal documents, my music, receipts, owner’s manuals, etc. The software interface is very intuitive and was easy to set up which folders I wanted backed up. The software seems to use less computer resources and CPU then other cloud service I have tried.

CONS

No complaints. The software is efficient and intuitive.

Reason for choosing IDrive

I like the software interface for iDrive better.

Reasons for switching to IDrive

Over the years I have tried several cloud-based backups. I bought a “lifetime” license to Zoolz cold storage, which was horrible and a waste of money. Cold Storage is too slow to be functional when you need it. Zoolz notified me a while back that they were no longer honoring the lifetime plan I bought from them. They are scheduled to start charging me in Oct 2022, so I needed to find a replacement.

IDrive for Business

I have been able to restore data on the fly in the event of a hardware failure to any registered device quickly. This has turned out to be the best feature.

PROS

Data is encrypted for security is critical. The cross platform support makes it ideal for Windows, Mac OSX, and Apple phones and tablets.

CONS

The feature missing that I would want the most is continuous backup. The scheduler allows a daily, and weekly backup and hourly backup only.

Reason for choosing IDrive

The pricing was the biggest reason. The solutions were very similar.

Easy to use and non-intrusive

I just needed a reliable off-site backup of my files.

PROS

Easy to set up and specify which folders to back. There is no need to move all your data to a special folder as there is with OneDrive or DropBox. This is a big issue as it lengthens some already long paths I have. Both OneDrive and DropBox actually corrupted and lost my data, whereas iDrive hasn't done that. I get emails and alerts to tell me if a backup has failed for any reason.

CONS

No real problems found.

Reason for choosing IDrive

Because I had already had bad experiences with OneDrive which is why I moved to DropBox. DropBox was good for a while, but a recent change in architecture seems to have rendered what used to be a good product something of a disaster area.

Reasons for switching to IDrive

Dropbox corrupted my files when I switch computer and I had to use my secondary backup (external hard drive) to recover them. I messaged DropBox but none of the suggestions allowed me to recover my files.

An essential app for Businesses

I'm very happy with iDrive. It has worked flawlessly when I have had issues with other services. It does it's core job very well.

PROS

Backup is something that is easy to forget to do. iDrive makes the process simple and works on both mac and windows computers. Once set up it works in the background and allows you to forget it again and carry on with just working, safe in the knowledge that if the worst happens your data and files are safe.

CONS

The user interface takes some getting use to. The initial backups also do take up a lot of system resources although you can throttle how much it uses.

Reason for choosing IDrive

iDrive appeared to be a good balance of features and cost.

Reasons for switching to IDrive

Synology did not back up all my data and failed several times which lead to me losing confidence in it.

A great high-capacity online backup service.

My existing cloud backup, which came with a well known (brilliant) anti-virus provider, only gave me 70GB of backup, and said I couldn't increase that until my renewal was due, in 11 Months. By the time I had explained how useless that was to me, I had subscribed, downloaded, installed iDrive, and it was already carrying out its first back up.

PROS

It was easy to deploy the backup software onto multiple computers. On the restore screens, I can easily see each individual computer, from which I can chose which files or folders to restore. The first backup took all day, although it was about 250 GB. Now the first backup is complete, it just takes minutes at the end of each day to backup all my work.

CONS

Maybe nice to be able to give user created names to each computer, rather than the default computer name that each machine has. Eg "Mary's Laptop", "Bills Computer", "Server".

Reasons for switching to IDrive

I was told that I could not increase from 70GB until my current subscription had expired, which was in 11 Months. I explained that I could not wait 11 Months, and the phone was put down on me. To be honest, I just don't think they understood my simple request, but the bottom line was that they could not increase my storage. iDrive was up and running in a few mouse clocks, with loads more storage. (I like Norton by the way for Anti Virus, but their cloud backup was not for me).

Amazing alternative to Google One and Microsoft 365

PROS

In searching for an online backup solution for my home network, I needed something that could scale for my terabytes of personal data that I need cloud storage and backup options for. Google One and Microsoft 365 both quickly become out-priced when you scale beyond 1-2TB. I have multiple hard drives for local backups, but cloud backup is still necessary for true peace of mind. With iDrive, I can backup every device (computers, phones, and tablets) in a way comparable and competitive with the big names without breaking the bank.

CONS

Because I can backup my phone photos and pictures at full quality (4k +), I very quickly exceeded the free basic tier in testing out the product.

Reasons for switching to IDrive

Price, mostly. The big names are still easy to use, but their price quickly becomes painful at the scale of a home that loves its pictures and videos.

All the features, none of the hassle, and a fair price point.

I used a competitor for over ten years, which was becoming less and less feature-rich and the price kept increasing. I’m so glad that I switched! IDrive is so much easier to use, being intuitive while at the same time feature-rich. It allows you to actually backup instead of just sync which is a major difference, they send you a drive through the mail so you can sync right away which is great if you have 7T and don’t want to use all your bandwidth. It allows you to backup to a local drive. I called to confirm something that I thought I understood and the technical support was fabulous. All the features, none of the hassle, and a fair price point.

PROS

Real backup system instead of just syncing. Intuitive to use and great technical support if needed Local backup capability Real-time backup

CONS

It took a while for me to research to find it. I wish their promotional material was more accessible to compare between services, but I think that none of them want that.

Reason for choosing IDrive

All the features and functionality at a fair price point.

Reasons for switching to IDrive

Did not have the ability to seed (be mailed a hard drive) to get the backup started, and it was taking over a year to catch up.

PROS

Whilst it takes a while to get used to the features which are not as user friendly or intuitive as other storage solutions, you can definitely have faith in the security and robustness of iDrive.

CONS

The need for manual removal of files in cloud storage when they have been deleted from your machine is a real pain. I keep forgetting to do this which results in taking me over my quota.

Reason for choosing IDrive

iDrive is Everything I'm Looking For and More

As for iDrive itself, I never had problems about reliability. It was just recently when I had issues logging in and had unnecessary back and forth with customer support. However, as for Drive itself, it comes highly recommended and I strongly vouch for it. It works as described and your backups are guaranteed safe. I just hope they fix their customer support response times and I hope I get better answers next time. That's my only qualms about this product. However, Customer Support is a vital aspect of any business so they should do something to address it (based on my experiences).

PROS

The most important factor for me is reliability and security and iDrive excels in both. I never had major issues using it as it is the set-and-forget kind of tool. Additionally, my Synology NAS has a native application for it so that I'm able to backup NAS data securely and without any fuss. It's as easy as it gets.

CONS

I never had problems with it until recently I had to send emails to customer support because of two issues. First, there had been issues with upload speed. Secondly, I'm having problems with my account being inaccessible on my NAS but otherwise works when outside of it (my NAS device). I've reported it to customer support but I had to do 2nd or even a 3rd follow up just to get a reply. I never had issues before so I didn't really know the customer support response time. And when I got a reply, it was confusing and I had to explain again. It was disappointing to be honest. So I just stopped. I just noticed that my account was suddenly accessible again and my backup jobs have been reset. I don't know what happened but definitely they did something on their end. However, just minutes prior to doing this review, I checked and I don't have access again on one of my NAS devices. But I'm able to log in on the other NAS and on my browsers on my other devices. I will send an email to CS to ask what's happening.

Reason for choosing IDrive

iDrive is cheap compared to the others but iDrive can do the same and even more.

Reasons for switching to IDrive

First and foremost, iDrive has NAS support and that's a very big factor. Other tools only have desktop versions and I cannot use that for continuous backups when my computer is not in use.

Used to be good but not any more

They used to be so good! I don't know what happened to them. New owners? New development and support team? Their Support crew didn't seem very interested and I frequently had to prompt them into action. When I cancelled my old account they still tried to charge me a subscription renewal for it - turns out they deliberately obscure the process needed to cancel so you think you've cancelled when you haven't. I'm disappointed when any company uses deceptive tactics to make it difficult to cancel recurring billing. When I cancelled my new account (because it never worked and they couldn't make it work) they would not fully refund me. That's both mean-spirited and a very foolish business decision when I can clearly show by their own email chain that they never once provided a working product. That means disputed credit charge transaction and a very expensive merchant chargeback, all for the sake of a couple of dollars. I don't know what business manager thinks that makes sense.

PROS

I used to use a legacy version of iDrive on a legacy plan. It worked great. I was always impressed with them keeping versions of files and retaining deleted files indefinitely. Nothing else out there touches it for features. Unfortunately it simply doesn't work any more.

CONS

I wanted to upgrade to a modern plan and for that I had to upgrade to the current version of iDrive. It never worked. Not once. Many emails to and from iDrive Support and they could not get it to work. Keep in mind the old version worked perfectly for years on this machine. It would hang for 12+ hours in "preparing file list" even when I reduced the backup set to a single file of only 1Kb in size.

Low cost, reasonably fully featured

Overall, I guess I'm a happy camper, and the product certainly scores positively in the "value for money" dimension.I'm still doing occasional on-site complete backups too, though!

PROS

Very few of us give enough attention to data backup procedures, and after the most recent potential data loss/scare, and with a growing complexity of ways in which fragmented data was being stored in an uncoordinated manner, it seemed appropriate to "do things properly". I was astonished to note that the built-in backup routines in Microsoft's Windows can't backup Microsoft's own Outlook PST files. Not being able to back up my PST files was a total deal breaker, which forced me to look for other solutions. As you probably know, cloud backup is the most elegant solution these days, but costs remain astonishingly high, compared to the underlying cost of hard drives. So I was delighted to find iDrive which appears to be one of the most reasonably priced service providers, and with an acceptably full raft of functions, including backing up "live" PST files. :)A moderately straight-forward set-up process made it easy to get started (but see the "Cons" below) and I'm starting to relax a bit about the safety/security of my data. Yay for that!

CONS

Doing an initial backup was very very slow and difficult. The data transfer rate from my computer to their cloud storage was astonishingly slow, and less than 1% of the fast fiber speed available between our offices and the internet. It took many days to get a first backup finally completed. The good news - they have 24/7 online chat and helpful (but more limited hours) phone support. The not-quite-so-good news - you'll probably never speak to an American when interacting with such people.

Reason for choosing IDrive

iDrive is reasonably fully featured and better priced than most competitors.
