Must have for data visualisation

Datylon saved my day with big report documents, obtaining excellent results; yet, the learning curve is steep and you have to be creative sometimes to get always what you want from your graphs.

Pros

Note: I’m a Datylon user in Adobe Illustrator environment. Datylon is great for big report projects: once you have set up your graph, you can apply it to several sets of data without any annoying “reset” issues from the Illustrator Graph tool.

Cons

The software lacks in consistency of features among the several graph types, especially the “Data label” feature, available only for Line graphs. I’ve been able to work this out by applying a Line graph w/data labels over Candle graphs, but it meant losing a lot of time in setting up both spreadsheets and Datylon graphs; some easy tweaks are not available (i.e.: in Data Labels, it will automatically delete leading zeros, even if the source data is set as text, and you can’t switch it off); in order to solve these issues, you need a good knowledge in both spreadsheet and Illustrator softwares.

Reasons for choosing Datylon

Because of its integration with Adobe Illustrator, its graphic precision and customisation

Response from Datylon

Hi Alexandros, Great to read you classify us as a "must have". But we acknowledge there is always room for improvement. We do have data labels on all our charts. But we are eager to hear what does not work for you so we can fix it. Don't hesitate to contact us via chat on our website or via getsupport@datylon.com The Datylon Team

A powerful tool with a learning curve

Overall, Datylon has been a great tool for us to make static data visualizations for print products and the occasional web product as well. Once you understand how to import and format data and learn about all the customizable data options, it's not overly difficult to use and has a great variety of charts to choose from.

Pros

The best thing about Datylon is the incredible level of customization that is possible for every chart. It's great that you can manually adjust the size of a chart and the entire chart will automatically resize, it's easy to change colors, font sizing, data point positioning, labels, etc. Occasionally you get to a point where you need to expand the chart and manually adjust something, but if you put the time in, you can usually find an option to adjust almost anything in your chart.

Cons

There are a few things that could be improved. The first is the constant updates of Datylon that are not incredibly well communicated to users. My colleague and I often find that Datylon will stop working (usually the editor will not appear or function) and we realize that there has been an update that we need to install and then restart our computers to activate. Fewer updates and better communication would be appreciated. I would also love to see a choropleth option! I work for a company that deals with a lot of demographic data and we are often needing to make choropleths of the world or states/counties/regions within countries. Even just starting with a world option would be great. There is also a big learning curve for this software. For me, the first time I used Datylon it took me several hours to try and understand how to format the data. Importing was easy, but the data was not arranged correctly and I didn't understand how the binding worked or that I would need to adjust the highest numbers that the axes would reach. I think there is probably a way to improve this. More video tutorials would also be helpful.

Reasons for switching to Datylon

Datylon is much more powerful and customizable than Illustrator's chart making software

Response from Datylon

Dear Anneke, Thanks for the nice review and constructive comments! Regarding the frequent updates, we are always (overly?) eager to release new features and some users are waiting on specific fixes, hence the frequent updates. But we'll keep it in mind. Regarding the communication, we send out service emails to all our users about the updates. So we need to investigate how to improve there. Feel free to contact us about that on getsupport@datylon.com. Ease of use and maps are definitely on our mid term roadmap. The Datylon Team.

a beginnings perspective

I'm still a beginner and learning every time. but I am glad that such a tool exists and recommend it to colleagues.

Pros

the ability to adjust data live and adjust the size afterwards.

Cons

if you make the data visualization you can't ungroup it to adjust something small that doesn't belong

Response from Datylon

Thanks for the review! The tool requires indeed a bit of a learning curve but we are working to improve on that. Please note it is possible to ungroup a Datylon chart. See this article in our Help Center: https://help.datylon.com/tutorials/ungroup-charts-in-illustrator And if you have other questions, do not hesitate to chat with us on our website or even book a session with one of our experts for more tips & tricks.

Great addition to Illustrator

Overall I love this plugin and will keep using it. Makes charts in Illustrator easier to create, easier to adjust and better looking overall,

Pros

Been looking for a better way to do charts/graphs in Illustrator - Datylon fits the bill. Easy to install as a plugin, great options for chart design and really easy to import/insert data. SOOOO much better than Illustrators outdated charts tool - easy to resize (yes!).

Cons

Downsides - because you can customize nearly everything, it takes quite a few clicks to style a simple chart. I wish I had more control over the default font (why can't I set my own?) and the way colors are handled with swatches takes a little getting used to. Only thing missing really is more heat map options - geographic heatmaps would be an amazing addition to this tool.

Reasons for choosing Datylon

The other products were either too data analysis centric, or didn't have enough styling options. I use Datylon as a designer, not as an analyst, so I really care about ease of creation, ease of editing and the overall look.

Reasons for switching to Datylon

B/C Illustrators inherit ability to create and edit charts is terrible and very outdated.

Response from Datylon

Hi Emily, Thanks for the review and the nice comments. Your suggestions for improvement are very valid. Although it might take a while to develop, we'll certainly put it on our roadmap! Kind Regards, The Datylon Team

Smart, powerful, but flawed product. Strong on data, clumsy on visualization.

Datylon is clearly a very powerful product, but some of that power is let down by a slow and clumsy interface. You can get it to do what you want, but it'll take time and patience, especially if you care about pixel perfect layouts and typographic details. Our primary use for it has been for marketing-oriented trend reports and analysis, so many of our visualizations are on the 'light' end, focused more on the visuals than hardcore data. Datylon has been very useful particularly in creating layouts and then adapting them for new sets of data, e.g. for updated surveys or different regions, but at times it feels like (1) it may be overkill for our somewhat simple purposes, (2) because of its slowness and clunkiness mentioned above, it may have been quicker and easier to create the charts using Illustrator's limited built-in tools. I think it's better suited to much larger scale and deeper visualizations that may be created once and then updated infrequently. But it's a decent product with a lot of potential, and I look forward to seeing how it improves with time.

Pros

The ability to revise and edit the data, and have it automatically update in the chart. Shared data sets for different charts, easy to duplicate charts using different subsets of the data for comparison. I love the ability to set custom colours through the sheet.

Cons

It's *very* slow. Edit something, anything, and it takes at least a second to reflect that change on the artboard. In addition, many of the settings for text font/colour/placement/alignment etc. are very fiddly and unintuitive. So there is a lot of trial and error till you get things looking the way you want them to. And then, there's no way to save styles or presets - so if I'm making a new chart I have to go through and change the font, sizes, colors, label positions, etc. etc. all over again. Duplicating charts - it's not immediately clear that it's also copying the data into a new sheet, so you inadvertently land up with multiple sheets with the same data in them, rather than one shared source sheet. I know I can go in and manually switch out the sheet, but why not give me the option to keep the same one when duplicating the chart? For heat maps etc. that use symbols like stars - let us use custom shapes! I know you don't want to build a full scale spreadsheet in an Illustrator plugin, but some of the sheets' functionality still feels too limited - basic things like dragging cells to duplicate/increment, for example.

Response from Datylon

Dear Jonno, Thanks for the review! Your remarks make a lot of sense and most, if not all, are on our roadmap. Some will require quite some development time, but we keep on working hard to improve our product. I'm only concerned about the low performance. That is not reported by other users and we see realtime rendering of the charts during testing. If you want, we can have a look at it.
