### Affordable, flexible solution for manufacturing operations BI

- Overall rating: 5/5
- Reviewer: Christopher S.
- Verified reviewer: Yes
- Industry: Automotive
- Company size: 10000+ employees
- Product usage: Used daily for less than 12 months
- Reviewed: June 2019

We needed a self-service BI solution that would cover manufacturing operations dashboards and use cases. We wanted a tool that would allow for the distribution of centralized common dashboards but also allow for self-service customization. It needed to connect to multiple disparate data sources, and provide native ETL. It also needed to allow for real-time refresh capability. Finally, it needed to be affordable and scalable to our global operations footprint. DundasBI was the only solution that checked all of these boxes, and so far the tool has been a great help to reducing external spend and internal, custom-coded solutions.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

-Real-time dashboard refresh capability -Built-in ETL -Flexible seat types and affordable licensing -Superior flexibility and customization, without the need for coding -Out of the box performance and usage tracking

#### Cons

Customization and flexibility come at the cost of a steeper learning curve compared to other solutions.

#### Reasons for choosing Simba Embedded Analytics

The other products did not meet one or more of the main requirements we had for our BI solution. DundasBI met all of them.

### Great user support!

The team on the "help desk", specifically [sensitive content hidden] , have been very patient and helpful. We've called on them more than once and had our issues solved and received valuable training and user tips at the same time.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

It's a highly flexible tool - every data visualization can be almost endlessly modified. I'm still working to learn the "scripting" features which open up even more options but require a much more detailed understanding of python which isn't needed for the more basic work.

#### Cons

There are a few "unhappy Easter eggs", such as that if a formula returns a null in the first row of a table then all of the rows won't show data, even though the formula is valid for them. There's an opportunity to improve the software by adding feedback on what is wrong when a metric set fails. Often the failure report is generic and doesn't provide detail or actionable feedback. We need something that tells us where to look to solve the problem.

#### Reasons for switching to Simba Embedded Analytics

Cost - Dundas was for us a less costly solution. It also provided an automated reporting and data export feature that we didn't have with Tableau and was needed by one of our clients.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 3/5
- Value for money: 3/5
- Customer support: 4/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Very modern workspace style with a lot of visualization options. Absorbs latest technologies fast and releases new features frequently. Provides unlimited possibilities when it comes to dashboard design.

#### Cons

Object references are too complicated, making duplicating/promoting items not as straightforward as it could be. Deployment could be very slow and problematic. Data directly from SSAS cube often stops refreshing.

### Developer-Grade Analytics Toolkit

We have authored a reporting and dashboard solution composed of 350+ reports/dashboards, and deployed that solution to clients across the U.S. and Australia. Our application is updated automatically every evening (thanks to the ease of distributing the code generated in Logi), so our clients always have the LATEST version of our solution available. We have deployed Logi servers on-premise, in the cloud (AWS and Azure), and used it to access both SQL and REST data sources.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Customer support: 4/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Tremendous flexibility and control of the "user-experience" for the solution that you develop with Logi. Can access data from a huge variety of datasources, both traditional and emerging big data and cloud. Visual development interface which creates underlying text-based code, which allows easy manipulation both for development as well as 'mass-change' editing. Text-based code is small in size and easy to distribute to remote sites for a distributed solution if required. Obfuscation of the code protects your intellectual property in the case of a commercial deployment. Developer-grade debugging capabilities greatly assist in isolating issues for quick remediation.

#### Cons

Logi offers a broad range of solutions, and sometimes it can be confusing to know if new features/capabilities are available for your use under your current licenses.

#### Reasons for choosing Simba Embedded Analytics

Fully customizable UI for the client experience. Attractive OEM pricing structure. Developer-grade software development environment.

#### Reasons for switching to Simba Embedded Analytics

Microsoft did not have a way to protect our intellectual property (i.e. the source code) which lives on distributed servers in the client environment. Also, the SSRS report source code resides inside a SQL database, which makes it difficult to extract and update for a distributed application. Finally the SSRS Report Builder provides only a 'visual' development environment, so when making 'mass changes' to the application, those changes must be done one-at-a-time via the visual editor.

### Amazing Experience for Your Dashboard's Users

- Overall rating: 5/5

The Creation GUI is very quirky, but the results are well worth putting up with it. I have never had an idea that I could not eventually create (sometimes, some java script is needed). The fact that they expose all of their API tools to the end user is amazing, and allows you to create some awesome things.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

- Support team is very helpful with basic use cases. - After a dashboard has been created, it looks great and works well for the end user. - People with zero programming experience are able to create dashboards.

#### Cons

(All very minor things, which might be addressed in future updates) - Data cube creation, metric sets, and dashboards must be created using their GUI- they cannot be generated using scripts or edited as script. - You cannot copy and paste sections of one dashboard or datacube to another. - Data cube nodes cannot be copied. - All programming scripts are stored in an sql database, which means you cannot use version control systems (such as Git Hub).

#### Reasons for switching to Simba Embedded Analytics

- *Security*: Power BI forces you to host your warehoused data on their cloud service if you want multiple users to access it. Dundas BI keeps your data on-site. - *Live Updates*: Power BI required the data to be warehoused, and the refresh time's granularity was in units of 10 minutes. Dundas BI displays current data from your data sources every time you trigger a refresh (such as changing a filter on the dashboard) or can be set to automatically refresh with a granularity of 1 second. - *Visual Appeal*: The charts from Dundas BI look much better, and changes are animated (by default). - *Documentation*: Dundas BI has very good EASY TO FIND documentation for 95% of the things you will want to do, as for the other 5%- their support staff can help you out. Power BI on the other hand requires either taking a class you pay for- or many hours of scouring message boards. Their documentation is very incomplete and sometimes even wrong.

### Exago - Great for SaaS products

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

• Includes Report Building capabilities that can be utilised by the client. • All report building is completed within the browser – no downloads required. • Includes Dashboards. • Includes ability for clients to build dashboards within the browser. • Strong permissions structure, that means you can explicitly say which users can see what. • No data access layer – this is entirely managed within the client, which means no replication of login data. • Reports are built based on a ‘model’, built from our database • Includes software upgrades – easy to implement • Support provided via telephone or Zen Desk • Report Building capabilities – can replicate current functionality. • Option to download a trial version of the software. • No SQL Licence required. • If we end the licence, we have 12 months grace to transfer to another solution.

#### Cons

• Support Hours – These are 8am – 6pm EST (We are a UK-based business) • Costs – cheaper than Reporting Services with BI, but much more expensive than Telerik, Synchfusion and similar. • Server / hardware requirements

#### Reasons for choosing Simba Embedded Analytics

The best solution that we reviewed was Exago. Its feature list, and apparent ease of use and support package was much more palatable than the other solutions.

Dundas is a fantastic company that really seems to care about their product and their customers.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

The tool can do anything you want. I don't think I've gotten one "no" since I started asking about capabilities.

#### Cons

The time needed to implement some features is high. And if you need to make changes to it later, you typically have to re-do a decent number of steps in the middle of the process (not on the dashboards, but in the data cubes that underlie them).

#### Reasons for choosing Simba Embedded Analytics

Functionality. As above, its power makes it very attractive as a BI tool that can extend far beyond graphs and charts.

#### Reasons for switching to Simba Embedded Analytics

It did not have a lot of the functionality we needed

#### Ratings breakdown

#### Pros

It was reasonably straightforward to set up and use and had a fairly clean and intuitive interface.

#### Cons

Error messages were often tedious and required digging through logs. We also had some difficulties embedding reports into our own applications.

#### Reasons for choosing Simba Embedded Analytics

We didn't; we ended up switching to Logi Analytics. Ironically, InsightSoftware has now acquired both Exago and Logi Analytics and will be folding Exago into Logi Analytics, so there we go.

#### Ratings breakdown

#### Pros

There are several built in functions that are lacking on my previous BI solution. I especially love the time hierarchy and the period of period comparisons that we had to force our old solution to do.

#### Cons

I'm a newer user, so the biggest issue so far is the learning curve. Most of it is intuitive, but coming off another BI solution, there's some need to retrain my brain. This would be true of any system though.

#### Reasons for choosing Simba Embedded Analytics

There were a dozen we researched and three or four we actively considered, but Dundas won us over with their range of features, the easy of use and most of all the price.

#### Reasons for switching to Simba Embedded Analytics

A new client wants scheduled reporting in a specific format and we weren't able to make it work in Tableau.

### Easy to use and very customizable dataviz tool

An excellent standing company with lots of desire to innovate and release in the market a top-notch product. I praise their attempt to develop a very customizable data viz.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 3/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

Integration of various types of data sources is simple and easy; even with multiple ETL steps and data enrichment features, you still can easily navigate the tool. Using JavaScript and CSS, you can step up functionalities and make them custom to your objectives—a good amount of built-in graphs and charts that would handle diverse reports and data formats. Dundas BI is my go-to data viz tool for making a highly customized dashboard! I have used it every day, for at least 6-7 hours a day, for the last 16 months.

#### Cons

The product has many "gotchas" and some unwanted behaviours that sometimes are not solved by support or future updates. Despite customer support being very responsive, the time it takes for a solution can be months long, and some don't have a solution. Intermittent bugs and some other types of faulty features The Developer Seat limitation is also an immense dislike on Dundas BI, as you can only develop and fully edit with limited user seats, creating an unnecessary paywall for customers. At the same time, the supplier operations costs are not being impacted by this. A different license system, in that sense, would be beneficial. Removing the forum discussions was a big setback as there was no way to connect with others and explore the many use cases and scripting one could use to solve problems. Dundas BI documentation is shallow and sometimes ambiguous, so if the customer support is sometimes limited and there is no community or board to share/absorb knowledge, how will the developers make the product better?

#### Pros

Dundas is a conglomeration of expertly coded dashboard development tools and infrastructures. The thing I like most about Dundas is that they are very helpful, the gentleman assigned to me to educate me in the ways of Dundas, was one I will never forget to this day, he was calm, helpful, understanding and with his help I learned Dundas in no time. I like the way Dundas structure's its Dashboard development, it starts with virtual tables, where the programmer can manually or automatically generate SQL queries, these queries are then used for the basis of adding statistical flavour to the Dashboard, the way this is done is very straight forward. Dundas has a steep unforgiving learning curve, but when you master the fundamentals, the sky really is the limit. Also their support service is world class, the representatives will assist you in any way they can, they will help you understand what the issue you are facing is and provide a resolution. If they cant help you via email, they will 'WebEx' you, i.e skype call with 2 way screen control. Everything in Dundas is customizable, charts, graphs and other statistical data can be glossed up and made to look as simple or as plush as the user envisions. You can add formulae, trend analysis and other key statistical methods are employed by Dundas. They have charts for Finance, Risk analysis and other key statistical methodologies. All of these charts can be jazzed up with scripts so that you can Drill down and filter through the data you want in order to get the right Business Intelligence feel to your work. Dundas supports the Data Cube, It supports Microsoft, Oracle, MySQL, EXCEL, it has export capabilities onto Excel, so those clients which prefer their data in Spreadsheets can manually export directly from the dashboard. Everything in Dundas is designed to give you the most professional feel possible at all times!

#### Cons

Dundas, for the good of it's users needs to publish more comprehensive educational equipment to train it's users, it is very hard to get to an expert level in Dundas without some help from your Friends in Dundas. I would love to see Dundas publish university style lectures, with step by step guides that show every aspect of the working sphere. With adequate educational material, one would be able to gain adept or even artisan status with the Tool on their own.

### Exago works for SaaS companies looking to integrate Ad Hoc Reporting

Our experience has been uniformly positive, from sales, to implementation, to ongoing support.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

We implemented Exago as an Ad Hoc Reporting tool for our customers, to go beyond the built-in reports we already provide. Exago gives them the flexibility to build their own quick ("Express") reports, create advanced and highly formatted reports, create dashboards, charts, and pivots, and to schedule reports to be automatically generated and mailed to a specified group of people. It was straightforward to integrate it with our platform, give customers a filtered view of just their own data, and customize the product for our specific needs. We evaluated a number of competing products and Exago was the winner for features, integration, and pricing.

#### Cons

Many of the products in this category are true Business Intelligence platforms, designed to be used by professionals in large corporate or organizational settings. But our customers are regular people, often volunteers, without professional training in complex software. The help is generally good and there are lots of video tutorials. But it would be nice if Exago had more wizards to step users through setting up a more complex report.

#### Reasons for choosing Simba Embedded Analytics

Ease of integration with our SaaS platform. Ease of learning and understanding the user interface. Features (not overkill for our chosen audience.) Pricing. Competence of the sales and technical support people we dealt with.

### Dundas BI - Much more than a BI tool

Overall experience is very good, I like that there is nothing that can't be done with this tool, with regards to user requirements.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Best thing about Dundas BI is that it is very extendable to user needs and it can accomplish a lot more in a very short development time, comparing to other BI tools on the market which are not so extendable and easy to use. You can also build more than a dashboard with Dundas BI, you can also create software as a service applications with complex navigation systems and all sorts of rules applied to the visualizations and it's data. Speaking of data, it also has a very powerful ETL engine that enables data transformation without needing to know SQL or other query languages.

#### Cons

These is not much to dislike at this tool but if I have to come up with an answer, I will say that the complexity of options for every visualization could be a dislike because it is very time consuming to find everything in the properties tab of each type of viz. This also may be a big like because it enables you to customize everything pixel perfect.

There is nothing we do not like about the system or the support team at Exago. The Customer Support and management team involvement is beyond the norm. As a start-up with limited resources, we underestimated our effort and were fortunate Exago were there to help. Take advantage of an open and transparent team, and make sure YOU have a clear understanding of your current challenges and discuss with them openly. They are not a heavy duty sales team so take advantage of that early on and you will have a system second to none in a very short period of time.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

We started with Exago two years ago, around the same time as we launched our own system. At the time our clients were small and our reporting requirements fairly simple so our decision was primarily based on affordability. We could not have made a better choice, then or now. We now have larger clients and one in particular who is amazingly complex in their business (Global Logistics), now bringing in data from their legacy systems and looking to this company to report on their Operational Risk. Exago has been there every step of the way helping us grow and making our clients secure in their choice of a small start-up to push information to their global stakeholders.

#### Cons

We are still expanding our reach and any questions we have had were either easily answered, or on their roadmap.

Integrating izenda 7 series has giving our product the ability to the end user to create and administer dashboards and ad hoc reporting, ultimately giving the end user better insight into their data without having to contact us for base report modifications. We essentially needed a BI tool, and this fit the bill!

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

I really like their flexible architecture. They have many integration and stand alone modes that fits all scenarios. The technology stack aligns quite well with ours - so that was a plus. The visualizations and ad hoc reporting capabilities are great. The simple licensing model is a must, and very good customer support.

#### Cons

The documentation on integration for both series 6 and 7 is a bit lacking - although I have seen a great push on getting it updated, its had to get any fine details. Due to this it has taken a long time for us to embed the solution properly. Although series 7 has many advantages, it is also lacking in certain areas compared to series 6. Having no export of the reports makes it hard to mange tractability with source control. 7 series is still quite immature with a lot of bugs. Performance is always a concern.

#### Vendor response

Thank you for the review and feedback. Regarding export options. Izenda supports export of reports to PDF, XLS, Word, CSV, JSON, XML

As a provider of bespoke software solutions I first started to look at Izenda about 7 years ago as a means to provide true Ad-Hoc reporting and to get away from having to develop reports in SSRS. Izenda gives the power of report creation and management back to the user base and will free your IT staff from having to create custom or numerous versions of reports for your clients. You can create a core base set of reports that best suite your solution and let your clients develop / expand them further. I like that it has a lot of base functionality but can also be "customized" to bend to all sorts of requirements and needs. Over the years I have seen quite a few and some of these have then been added back into the product. Not many Vendors would allow that or be so flexible.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Izenda allows seamless white label integration for non-technical users but also allows technical users to customize all areas to provide a powerful solution that matches their core solution. It pushes the reporting burden away from IT and into the hands of the user and allows for complex reporting in a simple to use UI experience.

#### Cons

The documentation whilst getting better still needs to be kept more up to date

After a multi-year search, we choose to use Exago as our BI reporting layer for our clients. The design of the product was very smart- almost anything can be configured and indeed we have been able to alter the look and feel of the product to match our software. Whenever there is an issue, we get a fast response, and in those times when a bug fix was required, the communication was excellent and the timeline more than reasonable. Graphs and dashboards are excellent, and the advanced report writing tool works out of the box and is easy for report administrators and even some non-programmers to use. The one downside is that when a normal report is created, pagination is required- which speeds up processing but detracts from the user experience. But overall, as a user (and as an advocate for our user's users), it's a great product, and it can't be beaten from a business model perspective and is a great value proposition.

- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Dundas BI is very intuitive to use because of the modern UI. Also, the customer support is just amazing. On top of that, it is very cost-effective as compared to other BI solutions in the market if you are looking for catering to a large base of users.

#### Cons

As with perhaps any other BI solution, there is a bit of a learning curve. In addition to that, in case you find any bugs/issues, you have to wait for the fix till the next major (annual) release.

### Nice Feature Set, Some Learning Curve

- Product usage: Used weekly for less than 2 years

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 3/5
- Customer support: 4/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Rich visualizations; tons of choices for visualizations with almost limitless customization; cube-builder platform is a very convenient environment for ETL - accommodates newbies with graphical tools and coders with convenient SQL, C#, and Python interfaces; state notifications are convenient and intuitive; good security.

#### Cons

Fairly tough to learn this platform - not always intuitive - hard to do simple things sometimes; limited (statistical) analysis toolset - no ML, though Python integrates nicely and has some application. v6.0 was a good step forward. Most customer support technicians are outstanding. Very skilled, knowledgeable, helpful. Other times, you have to bounce emails back and forth for a week before getting meaningful answers to your questions.

#### Reasons for choosing Simba Embedded Analytics

I didn't make the final decision, but I recommended this platform because of the vast array of features, the cube-builder ETL tools, and because the sales team was not high-pressure/pushy/deceptive. Suggests to me this is a client-centered company and the platform sells itself.

Overall great experience with Exago's tool. The staff is patient and very helpful. Sometimes the logic gets complex quickly and not always able to get what we want easily. We are dependent on our integration choices we made back in 2008 so we have been not able to use some of the newer functions. The recommendation is to keep up to date as much as you can or you'll fall behind. Email reports to users is a great feature. We support 100's of users and clients around the world.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

- Ease of Use - Customer Support - Reporting Options - always looking to improve the product - Love the output options, dashboards, graphs, drill-down reports, cross tab.

#### Cons

- sometimes complex logic - most of the time our data does not match northwind model so samples are hard to turn into relevant business cases. - Integration is sometimes tricky and mostly with our dev team.

Exago has many features that showcase our data into meaningful visualizations and analytics for our clients. We use Exago for both standard reports in our product and custom reports. We've found Exago to be a robust reporting tool that meets the needs of both our company and our clients.

#### Cons

There are a few features that could be more user intuitive when creating custom reports and filtering. However, we have found Exago's customer support to be responsive and their documentation is extensive.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Value for money: 1/5
- Customer support: 1/5
- Functionality: 3/5

#### Pros

Its a very versatile product. Dashboard can be highly customized we used it for more than 10 years. Before it was called Dundas Server and it used to be a Dundas company

#### Cons

Now a new company has taken over. The SALES and renewal is not professional. Email responses take forever. The Phone conversation with sales is like a premium. Renewal costs have gone up significant. Their emails are like written by ChatGPT.

#### Reasons for choosing Simba Embedded Analytics

At that time it was a great product.
