SAP Crystal Reports is a Business Intelligence (BI) program for Windows suitable for small to medium-sized businesses across multiple industries. It provides mobile apps for Android and IOS. The system offers the ability to write customize reports from multiple data sources and visualize data in dashboards and scorecards, display KPIs and other metrics related to project or departmental performance.

SAP Crystal Reports allows users to create report designs with charts and graphs using Adobe Flash, Adobe Flex and SAP Crystal Dashboard Design data visualizations. Key features include conditional box formatting, data export to multiple formats, right-to-left text formatting, vertical text alignment and parameter description display.

It offers multi-language support in English, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Russian and Simplified Chinese. SAP Crystal Reports is priced per user. Support is provided through an online forum, email and phone.

Cons

Does not like Microsoft Updates- .net updates have crashed reporting so many times and it takes days to correct the issues. On-demand reporting is weak.

Can do a lot and makes great looking reports. Makes my job much easier once I get a report built, it is just push a button and the report refreshes. Very powerful. I love that I can connect to any database, including excel to pull into a report.

Cons

Sometimes can be a little tricky to get complex reports to run without locking up. Not very often though.

Easy to use. It did take a bit of a tutorial and some playing around but once you understand how it works, it becomes much simpler. I use this software to analyze and create financial related reports which drive statistical metrics.

Cons

Small learning curve, especially if you don't know SQL and understand the basics of relational databases.

Pros

The fact that you can set up a simple report without any real training. Many features and tools available that will require some training (linking subreports, functions, formulas, etc.) It reads just about any data format or structure.

Cons

Beyond the simple reports, it will require some level of training. Support normally isn't free but you should be able to find samples and help on the internet.

I've used Crystal Reports for years now. It is a great product that allows me to create customized reports from my database. However, it is not something that is easy to do unless an individual has some previous knowledge of query operators. It takes some thought, especially when doing more advanced functions, to get the report setup correctly. Formatting options are also a bit limited.

Pros

I can create customized reports that I am not able to do in my database.

Cons

It is not easy to use and requires some previous query knowledge or training.

Advice to Others

I do recommend this product, but it will require some training for those not familiar with doing queries. It is a great product, but I'd like to see it streamlined some so it is easier to use.

Having been a user of Crystal Reports 2008 through 2011, I am a big fan of Crystal Reports. We have now migrated to Crystal Enterprise version and there are some big gains and a few misses with this version. The ease of use for beginners is much greater in the Enterprise version. If you are just starting out, the Enterprise version is a nice package. It features drag and drop capability, easy navigation, and plenty of customization for your visualization. There are still some nagging spots that have not been cleaned up, primarily in the formatting areas. Small things like drawing borders or creating grids are more hassle than they are worth. And if you make a small change in the report it could easily throw off your formatting and you will need to touch all those pieces again.

However, the power of Crystal Reports makes it well worth the minor annoyances. It delivers a powerful tool for delivering standard visualizations. It packs plenty of power that can satisfy almost any requirement.

Pros

1) Ease of use.
2) Clean and standard reporting.
3) Multitude of ways to deliver your reports. Email, ftp, on demand, etc.

Cons

1) Minor annoyances that can crop up out of nowhere; typically involving formatting.
2) For as mature as the product is, it still tends to crash more often than I would like.

Advice to Others

Do your research once you get this program. There are plenty of tricks and best practices and you can find most of them on the web. Join in discussion groups, take advantage of users with experience. Don't get frustrated trying to work things out yourself all the time.

Crystal has allowed us to pull data from our system in a much more meaningful way than with our old methods. It also allows us to customize what individuals see on reports, to tailor them to their liking. With our old processes we had a report we would send to a salesman that required around 6 different reports molded in to one within an excel file. This whole process was eliminated and we were able to produce the same results using Crystal.

Likes Least

Crystal is pretty intuitive but for the average person it will take some learning to be able to use the software to its full potential. I would say it has a medium to high learning curve. There are also a few annoyances where some windows force attention and will not let you click anything else until you finish that window.

Recommendations

First, make sure any software you want to integrate with Crystal is compatible. It can tap in to a lot of things but not everything.

I like that Crystal Reports 2013 + has the ability to run filters and queries without hitting the database more than once. The Crystal Reports engine improved with version 10 and has continued to improve, so reports run quickly for the most part (unless you've built a horrible SQL query in a Command Object).

Pros

I've used versions 5 up to 2013 - the power to do amazing formulas and formatting is awesome (from about 2010 to version 2013). Also, the ability to connect to almost any data source is great.

Cons

It's not intuitive, but once you learn where to find things, it's a powerful reporting tool.

If I need dynamic, impressive reports, SAP crystal reports is very flexible and offers many solutions to various requirements

Pros

1. Depending on the report requirements, Crystal reports has great capabilities to allow you to create all kinds of reports. You can place images, forms etc using OLE.
2. It allows a user to define multiple data sources, making it flexible when transferring to different platforms.
3. It allows a user to conditionally suppress sections within the report which enables certain parameters to be checked in certain sections of the report.
4. It enables the drill-down feature which allows the final user of the report to drill down further within a report to view more specific details.
5. It can do complex queries and allows a user to incorporate SQL statements in a flexible manner.
6. A user can create sub-reports, group selections and easily format various sections of the report in order to achieve different requirements.
7. It allows format parameters to be used easily and flexibly e.g. one item on the report can be bolded and displayed in italics due to specified parameters.
8. Supports different types of data sources e.g. HANA, MS SQL, Excel etc

Cons

1. For a new user, it might be challenging to create new reports and one might not fully utilize most of the features.
2. Graphical features such as charts are not as enhanced as in other reporting tools.
3. Development of complex reports might take a bit of time depending on the user's experience level
4. When you export a report created with crystal reports to excel, there is a lot of distortion depending on the excel format. It will take a lot of trial and error and eventually, the data on the report is hard to edit on excel.
5. It might crash often after a software update.

Pros

I like that Crystal reports have a very strong capabilities like sorting of data. You are also able to retrieve most of your company' data for analysis using the tool. Crystal reports helps us create highly formatted and detailed reports - much more that what we are able to get from the SAP Business One software itself.

Another awesome thing about Crystal reports is that it is that the process of creating reports is easy once you get used to the mechanisms of the tool. For example, once you pull a certain aspect of a specific set of data, yo can reuse it and only change a variable according to your new needs.

Crystal Reports are also pretty affordable for small and medium sized companies.

Cons

Though the initial purchase of crystal reports can be quite affordable, the tool gets expensive when you need to buy the server which is quite costly but essential for scheduled notifications and other benefits.

SAP Crystal reports is a great tool interfacing with SAP. It gives you a lot of flexibility to customize your reports and print outs, i.e. receipts and checks, etc. It doesn't take much time to learn, as long as you already have an idea about how databases work. It's basically drag and drop, just as other reporting tools nowadays, and the integration with SAP is seamless. It can also work with other platforms and date sources.

Cons

It's not easy to learn if you only want to design a form. This is truly a developer's tool, or at least, a designer's tool. Not for your average user.

I have to say this is a great product only thing is you need to take competency classes or a guide book to be really proficient in it. There so many great features and capabilities in crystal report. This is the traditional reporting tool that is used in many financial organizations. I have used SAP Crystal Reports 12 in my organization. We can design highly formatted reports using this tool. It can connect to multiple data sources such as ODBC, OLE DB etc. We can create reports with different formats such as pdf, csv, txt, xls, etc. We can also create html, xml reports. The price of this tool is also cheap. We can create detailed graphics, instrument panels.

I used crystal report with Peoplesoft ERP and with Java also .When I compare crystal report with another report application I found it is much batter because of user friendly features for example there is no need to write manual sql just need to give table mapping it creates sql from itself.It gives option to open report in pdf and excel or in which form client want reports.No need to spend time to write so much code as many logic and feature is already present you just need to drag on your report.For me crystal report is fun with code where you design as per your require but no need take tension behind design.

Cons

in crystal report it is little bit difficult to do mapping between two different different database's table.if you do also many time it will not give correct data.

Pros

Flexible tie in to your existing system and infrastructure is a plus, it handles many different criteria and complex output.

Cons

This is a product that has been around a long time. And it does a lot. But it does not look good doing it. The output never quite matches the template thing, and the customization is tedious beyond imagine.

Crystal Reports allowed me to streamline my inventory refresh ordering and my custom ordering process into a single automated report. After setting reorder points in for all of my stock items I was able to get instant reports that tell me when I need to order and avoid stock outtages. At the same time each day, I run my report, save it as an excel file and forward to my production facility!

Cons

Steep learning curve, but it is worth it. There is also a dependency on having good clean source data. Crystal Reports may actually point out some shortcomings in your source data and create more work short term.

Pros

This software allowed us to create customized documents directly from our accounting software that looked impressive and professional.

Cons

This software takes a long time to learn as it has functions and features that I will never touch because they are far above my pay grade.

You can fit a lot of information onto one page if you have the patience and fortitude to go through layers and layers of fields and sections.

Cons

There are simpler report builders out there. Crystal reports has a lot of power behind it but it requires so much work to get a proper report out that it might not be worth it for smaller operations.

I use this software for all of my complex reports.

Pros

Crystal Reports has more advanced functionality that other reporting tools just don't have. When I have a complex report to write, I go to crystal to write it.

Cons

It is a little complex so there is a strong learning curve to be able to use it, however it is extremely powerful software. You also pay for what you get, so crystal is a little expensive and may not be worth the money if you only need simple reports.
