Master of automated reports

Ease-of-use

Customer Support

Value for Money

- I would recommend Tableau software ( desktop and server ) to any medium sized data driven company. With the new pricing, the quality / price ratio is fair enough.

Pros

- Tableau server : Ability to publish reports and share the data with the wanted parties in 2 clicks
- Data download : Downloading data ( raw format or tabular ) directly from the report
- Variety of customisable charts and dashboards
- Use of parameters : Passing values using parameters will make the report more customisable

Cons

- Extract and automated refreshing process are a bit buggy.
- UI will crash if the report is built on top of an important amount of data ( depends also on the UI and how many filters are used )
- Live connexion feature do not scale well with the size of data used.

Excellent product, difficult setup, amazing results.

Pros

It is so easy to use once everything is set up. Running reports, storing and sorting data, and sharing your analytics with shareholders. Once all of the processes are set up, you are golden.

Cons

It can take a LOT of hours to get all of the right integrations and data points running smoothly. It is quite simple and intuitive as far as the program interface is concerned, but the leg work involved in getting all of the connections. Some companies might be better served hiring a consultant to help them set it up, because it requires significant know-how to get the most out of Tableau.

Pros

I love how easy it is to make visualizations from data. It’s so much easier than using excel and you have so much more control over how everything looks and works.

Cons

It can be frustrating to work with dates. The product is expensive but it’s worth it in my mind. I wish you could join data from different servers rather than just blending them.

Pros

Tableau has streamlined our reporting processes. By allowing us to combine data from several sources across our business lines we are able to get accurate screen shots of how our sales people are performing to goal. We love that the data updates weekly. This really helps our sales team to be able to patch leakage in travel programs right when they become an issue and thus reduce the lost room nights.

Cons

We have a lot of data in Tableau and because of this it seems to run slow or take a while to produce reports depending on how much data you are pulling.

My overall experience with Tableau has been a positive one. I liked how I could make connections to MySQL database as well where I store most of my data. Also, Tableau works great with conventional excel files such as xlsx and csv. If you are an advanced user, Tableau works with geospatial files too. I had a lot of fun creating maps in Tableau. My boss was very impressed with the quality of the maps and how it was so easy to pick up an insight with the help of Tableau.

Pros

Tableau has been the talked of the town because of the ability to create dynamic visualizations on the fly allowing no disruption when conduction exploratory data analysis. This allows the presenter to engage his audience/senior management to address questions immediately. Compared to other visualization tools, Tableau is relatively easy to pick up. With simple clicks, drag and drops, a business analyst can create a dashboard in a short amount of time. My favorite feature would be Pages as it allows the analyst to observe how the data changes with respect to time. Tableau also offers a variety of visualizations, dashboard and story features. The bubble plot is by far my favorite!

Cons

The price for the enterprise version of Tableau is expensive. Taking the certification exam to get license is expensive as well. (However, there is the public version that is available for free). In addition, do not bother to contact customer service if you are not a corporate client. They will not entertain your questions. Having said that, the tableau community is an extremely resourceful page and there are a few good tutorial channels out there.

2. overall project cost is far less compared to other BI tools
3. Innovate and adoptive to the changes very quickly and takes less time in new releases

Cons

1. Still the problem is it is not a complete replacement to existing Enterprise BI
2. Also, it creates less jobs (developer like me) when compared to other tools like BO, Cognos

I've worked with Social Media Analytics with Twitter data (and metadata) and it really was a breakthrough tool for that end. Things I was struggling with other tools were almost effortless on Tableau. I really recommend. There are resources online and courses so anyone with enough time and dedication may learn and get things done.

Pros

Excellent tool. Once you get by the first interface learning curve, it is easy to learn, very well documented and simple to do the basic stuff. If you want to get more serious, of course it is harder, but I was able to do things I deemed were very complex with not so much work, thanks to Tableau. Besides, since I am an academic researcher, they have a generous free license program that allows me to perform my research without spending all my (not-so-abundant) resources, such as with statistical analysis softwares (unfortunately...). The visualization possibilities are most helpful not only to analyze, but to synthesize sometimes, so it works as a means and an end at the same time. I am very impressed and thankful to Tableau software and the community that helped me get through with Social Media Analytics for my PhD.

Cons

It is resource intensive, so you better work on a good (hopefully desktop) computer. Specially if dealing with big data. Also, sometimes the interface goes a little crazy and you have to load and unload to get the visualization right. It crashes with some frequency, but I have never lost much of the work thanks to an auto-recovery tool. The data import may feel less intuitive (as compared to the worksheet interface) and I had problems importing *.csv files and converting date fields.

I have problems getting started with making more complex visualizations that incorporate SQL "Group By"s.

Pros

I love how Tableau allows me to perform cross-database joins in an extremely simple & intuitive interface. They also allow you to create datasources by writing SQL directly in the software.

Cons

The features come at a price. The software is EXTREMELY costly for the enterprise (people within the organization have to pay to view a dashboard), and in order for your organization to make the most out of the software, you should hire a Tableau expert/Data Analyst first. The visualisation aspect of this software is also tough to get started on.

We used Tableau for visualizing performance data. This allowed our teams to see what we were doing and achieve our goals more effectively. I also use Tableau with a number of vendors that offer customer analytics information- I find Tableau's GIS information to be more accurate than Power BI or Google Data Studio.

Pros

Tableau allows you to easily input a multitude of sources to create beautiful, easy-to-use dashboards. The great Tableau Reader allows you to share dashboards with others (for free) when you don't need them to edit. Lots of companies use Tableau, so it's an industry standard. It's probably the best pad dashboarding tool out there.

Cons

As a dashboarding tool, Tableau is easy to use, but there is a learning curve. There's a lot of functionality to unlock, and, without a significant time investment, you're just not going to get all the benefit. Also, it can get pricey for multiple licenses.

Pros

Tableau, though slow to adopt, has greatly evolved from the tool it was years ago. There is wide support across different datasource types, APIs and custom implementations. It's possible to create visually intuitive and responsive visualizations and iterate on designs quickly.

Cons

Tableau implementations can get very complicated very fast. Tableau is a reporting tool and not a data wrangling solution. Customer service isn't well trained. Prepare to be disappointed when you reach out for support, unless your issue is escalated up the chain to Support Engineering.

We have a lot of customers that require monthly data to determine if a project is successful or not. We used to deliver monthly excel tables and figures that were made by hand. But thanks to Tableau we can automatically generate these figures and send them 10 times faster.

Pros

Tableau saves me a lot of time when producing monthly reports to our colleagues and partners.

Cons

Sometimes I don't know how to perform a certain action, and the online information on how to solve this is not always easy to find. I spend a lot of time searching forums for the answers.
