Moodle Software

Moodle is a free, open-source learning management system (LMS) available to users in corporate and academic settings. It allows course administrators to extend users' education beyond the classroom or office. Private websites can be created and customized to include dynamic courses that engage learners and allow their progress to be tracked and reported.

Moodle's focus is on usability, and includes customizable themes and a wide range of modules and features. Individual learners can be tested through assignments and quizzes, and collaboration can be promoted through user-generated wikis, workshops and forums.

Gamification features such as rewards, leaderboards and hidden easter eggs help keep learners engaged, while freely available plug-ins and add-ons allow course administrators to create a learning environment that fits their needs.

Moodle is Web-based and comes with over 100 language packs for use in most parts of the world, along with the global network of certified Moodle Partners available to assist with integration and customer support.

Pros

Using Moodle as a student was helpful because it allowed me to be able to take classes without having to physically attend the classroom. There was storage for data and other information that I needed and it was an effective tool for grading.

Cons

The software seems to be ten years behind the rest of the industry. While it does what you would need it to do, the interface is clunky and there is a lot that makes you say "huh?" in the setup.

I used this program Moodle for my College work. I find it effective to use because my Teachers posted all my assignments in moodle and any updated news that needed to be check. I like the program. The goodness of this Moodle program will outweigh the bad any day.

Pros

This Moodle product is effective, accurate and user friendly for all people using at the same time. Moodle was designed to help people in the time of need and was easy to navigate through the program.

Cons

When Moodle get cut off or hanged up in the program it will freeze up your computer. Then you will have to call customer service to figure out what the issue is. Sometimes it may take a while when you don't have the time - when time is crucial.

Moodle is a great tool to develop online content for online courses and distance teaching. Moodle can be extended using the various plugins. You can set up quizzes and certification. It is backed up by so many developers around the world, who constantly provide the help in forums and develope plugin, and that is also at free of cost. Even the United Nation uses Moodle.

Pros

Moodle offers so many services, which are not offered by many other LMS together. It's free to use and modify, so the cost is very low to set it up. It can be used in many languages and even RTL(Right to Left) is supported.

Cons

It could be a little difficult in the very beginning for a user to use and get familiar with the Moodle LMS.

Pros

It is a great tool for communicating fully with students. Having all available notes, syllabi, etc. online and available at any time is a huge time saver for both instructors and students. It's also very user-friendly, after being instructed in its use. My son even uses Moodle in middle school.

Cons

As an old dog with new tricks, there was a definite learning curve as an instructor. It took me some actual sit down instruction time to really make Moodle work well for me.

Pros

I used this software as a student as well as a TA, and I found it had very few glitches or lost uploads.
From the student view, students can see their grades for each assignment in a useful chart.
From the Teacher/TA view, the charts were more robust with more information, which was helpful.

Cons

The Teacher/TA View sometimes was tedious to enter grades through, although most fields can be cycled through using the tab key.
This was helpful when entering large numbers of grades.

Pros

This LMS is the easiest open-source/free option out there. It is really cheap and easy to develop new plugins for that. Lots of companies and freelancers can give you support and service for that. Also, so many free plugins are available.

Cons

This software is pretty old and the restful APIs are only work for some features of that. The mobile app is not as sophisticated as other competitors such as Canvas. The code base is really old and graphical user interface is also pretty confusing and general purpose.

Moodle and its Market Share

Ease-of-use

Functionality

Product Quality

Customer Support

Value for Money

Moodle dominated the LMS market for years but there are new kids on the block and new users should have a really good look at their options before getting tangled up with Moodle.

Pros

Features: has what one needs to create courses and enroll students.
Can be configured to meet one's needs.
Price (free)

Cons

Moodle takes most serious users well over a year to configure. Unless one has considerable technical skill, developers will be needed so the product is not really free. It is actually very expensive.

Being out-of-date is a serious problem in the IT world, but Moodle is seriously out-of-date so there are endless plugins and add-ons and these usually require some customization that will be lost when upgrading. In a year, there are apt to be 3-6 upgrades so one must consider the time and expense of redoing work that is necessary for one's particular uses.

Some tools may not be well intergreted and they don't work properly e.g split pdf.

Pros

It is an open source software, flexible and easy to use. The course can be adapted according to the needs and interests of the students. Ability to create a familiar learning environment. Supports a vast amount of languages.

Cons

The system becomes slower and can be troublesome as the number of students that get involved with the platform activities increases. Not recommended for big projects and big institutes. The efficient customization demands the coding skills and experts' intervention.

Noodle is a mediocre software and is usable but not really user friendly

Pros

It offers a free platform for working with students, and communication among staff about students, however, it is easy to get lost in when you have a lot of data.

Cons

A bit confusing and not user friendly which makes staff less apt to use it if not required. Our staff didn’t use it because it took so much time to figure out which folder they should be in and how to use the platform.

I have been using MOODLE for years and I highly recommend it

Pros

It is an open source tool therefore it is free, it is very easy to use and has everything required for the creation and management of online courses. In addition there is a large community of users who collaboratively share concerns and solutions to questions or problems with the software

Cons

An important detail to improve are the problems that arise when updating the MOODLE version, usually there are disagreements with the databases.

It’s hard to find something bad to say about this program. After all, you’re getting so many features that other programs charge you to use. However, my experience with the lagging was frustrating, especially since I was on a deadline. If it had been only a little worse, I could have missed the deadline. Granted, while this was annoying, I have to remind myself that it is free to use. Can’t really complain.

Pros

Well, first off, it’s free! When price is important, especially for smaller schools and companies, free is always a good thing. The amount of features that Moodle has is one of the things that drew us to it in the first place. It has many features that even pay-to-use programs don’t have. It’s also so easy to use, which makes teaching new people how to use it a breeze. I like how grades can easily be uploaded and viewed. Courses are also very easy to update, with the ability to upload lecture notes, powerpoints, and tests. Very much worth the “cost.”

Cons

The program is very basic UI-wise. It could do with a little more flair, user-wise. It would also be handy to customize the pages based on courses. It would also be good to have the program email a person when they receive a message. Otherwise, it could be days before you get a message, depending on how often you log in. Also, even though it is easy to use, it is often laggy. This is frustrating, especially if you’re trying to complete a test or quiz by a certain time.

Used Moodle in a corporate environment to train end users of a tech product.

Pros

Very flexible LMS. As an open source tool there are a tremendous amount of options to enable for different elements, which is great, but can be overwhelming

Cons

If you are going to use Moodle, I'd strongly suggest either purchasing it through a support partner, or have a skilled tech that is dedicated to the role of managing the site, as with open source elements there are no guarantees on the viability of shared materials. Havnig someone knowledgnlr can mitigate some of the steep learning curve for teachers and students.

The price (though the cost of the implementation/support team makes it very expensive).

Cons

So, some of this is how my university has implemented it, but was a cumbersome piece of frustration for everyone. Staff/Professors with advanced skills find it unintuitive, students find it hostile. There is no good phone functionality. It's far too complex. This is the worst of open source software, all functionality ideas as treated with equal importance resulting in a big mess.

If my institution took the money we paid people directly to support this nightmare and, instead, paid a company with a sense of how to design good software, it would probably cost us the same and we'd have a better experience, but that would mean letting people go an that's tough to do, so everyone is stuck with software that is turning away students.

Moodle made communications with my teachers much easier, made test taking very efficient, and I could get near-instant feedback on marks. It greatly increased the convenience and accessibility of course content.

Pros

For school, I went to a technical institute that used Moodle exclusively. I found it very easy to work with, as it was compatible with any device I wanted to use. My course instructors uploaded course content into Moodle and everything was at my fingertips. Whether I wanted to follow a presentation in class, review the course content late at night from home, or view and interact with items on any device, IOS, Android, PC, cell phone, you name it! I also enjoyed having the ability to instantly communicate with other students in my classroom via the in-built communications features. I could send other students a message any time while working on a project, and since everyone used moodle, I could be sure that someone was going to see it soon.

Cons

I found occasional bugs in some of the communications modules where messages would not send and updates would take several hours. However, these could have been due to my school's implementation.

Moodle plays well with just about anything- so you can house all of your resources there. Taking education materials to an XaaS makes meeting anywhere, anytime feasible and removes the excuses of "forgetting" items.

Cons

I haven't found an effective way of curtailing forum/journal posting abuse. Because "students" can view the other postings, they can simply scrape a few ideas here and there (copy and paste) and there isn't a built-in check for that type of thing.

Moodle has been an amazing tool to have during university and facilitates structured learning. It is easy to use and has an intuitive navigation bar etc. Its features are very helpful while communicating with tutors.

Pros

Moodle was the first and most easy to use software our university administered courses through. As a student, I loved the clean layout to keep track of my progress in assignments etc.

Cons

Moodle is equipped with some really superb features like talking to your tutor, I feel they could build up on that feature since its so important in an environment of shared learning.
