athenahealth EHR Software

athenahealth is providing cloud-based services for electronic health records (EHR), revenue cycle management & medical billing, patient engagement, care coordination, and population health management, as well as Epocrates and other point-of-care mobile apps.

athenahealth currently works with a network of more than 99,000 providers. The EHR offers a homepage that allows users to review the daily schedule and patient information, manage orders, and view incoming lab results. The billing module can be used in tandem with the EHR or on its own, and features a patented and continuously updated rules engine. Medical practice management tools include visibility into daily responsibilities, custom benchmarking, proactive trends analysis, and more.

Patients can utilize a patient portal to review history, pay bills, sign forms, and schedule appointments. Reminders can be delivered via phone, email, or text message; patients can even be alerted when test results are waiting in the patient portal.

Pros

Easy, pleasurable interface to navigate. Also easy to train others on it, overall a great product. I loved working on it compared to others I have worked with.

Cons

Sometimes it was a little bit laggy and crashed often during the work day. After a phone call to athena they were usually able to fix it quickly though.

Customer Support

Value for Money

Pros

It has a lot of the bells and whistles that you need for a EMR and of course they've available during implementation.

Cons

Customer support is non-existent once you finish implementation. We are in limbo now as we use it with ipads/iphones and since the IOS upgraded, athena isn't compatible. They said they'll look into it and after a week of waiting, we have no answer and no one to speak to. As well, you need to create a ticket for everything and it takes a good 30-45 minutes to even get simple answers. They assign you a "customer success" manager after implementation but they don't know any clinical answers. We asked to speak to a manager and 10 days later, still waiting for this to happen. I even tweeted athena to see if I could get a quicker reply and no answer.

I still thought this was an excellent product but I wouldn't recommend to anyone with a small group of users.

Pros

The mobile piece was an excellent solution at the time but as standards changed, we no longer needed a system like this. There are a lot of bells and whistles but they come at a price.

Cons

It was pretty expensive for the population we were using this for. Maybe 200 people were using it and it was a huge cost. Used this software for a year or so but no longer needed the mobile portion so the software became too expensive.

Pros

It is pretty easy to learn, manuals are online, support and their customer support representatives are awesome!

Very Disappointed with this EHR and their billing.

Ease-of-use

Our billing is also done through this system. Waste a of money. This is a huge disappointment. I spend too much time researching modifiers and trying to make sense of computer generated billing instructions telling me to see this rule or that rule. These are issues that a billing company is supposed to take care of. Need to talk to someone on the phone to resolve an issue? Good luck. Would be much better off to just hire a billing/coding person to work in the office.

Pros

Well, it is an electronic record so i have to consider that a pro.
I really cannot think of any other pros.

Cons

Total Lack of Support. You cannot just call to speak to someone. You must first go through multiple questions and drop down boxes to direct and then you can receive an access code which is required to actually speak to someone. More often than not, the person isn't aware of how to help with your situation and has to go speak to someone else while you remain on hold.

I miss it!

Pros

I used it every day and was easy to flow through for an ortho practice, well organized when it comes to patient information and forms or documents that the patient needed. Easy to fax as well.

Cons

Sometimes with updates it would be an adjustment and sometimes run things slow. Called customer service quite a few times, but helped out.

Pros

I liked that the encounter notes would fax automatically to their PCP's and how easily it was to fax any document.

The cloud based version of Athena that I use on my computer is fine. But this app is such trash, I feel like someone should be eternally damned to the fiery pits of hell for creating it.

Pros

It fits right in your pocket. The icon is a lovely purple cloud with a factually inaccurate caricature of an EKG tracing on it.

Cons

It is a useless piece that will not help you care for your patients. It will continuously block you from logging in, stating that "Your session has expired. Please log in." And no matter how many times you close the app, reboot the app, restart your phone, etc, it will continue to give you this message and prevent you from logging in. Pretty handy, huh?

Overall, too difficult to navigate through the program from a front desk perspective.

Pros

The ability to track patient communication and the ease of routing faxes. Being able to see previous patients that you've accessed if I forgot who I was just working on.

Cons

Too many clicks to do 1 function, too long to enter new patient info, and hard to view schedules. It's not easy to go back to previous screen because it kicks you back to the main screen every time.

Cons

The way money is handled made me very uncomfortable, The onus is on the doctorTo remember to click and release funds Earned by theMedical provider.Never saw this with any other software. I feel more comfortable having money directly put into my account - no reason it needs to be held onto by Athena.

Athena doesn't employ a single physician to help out at headquarters, which you will understand when you go through training. The project managers will push you through the poor training until it is too late. It was a complete nightmare learning this system; most descriptors are mislabeled.

Pros

You can create order sets (Doctor's orders) that include correct diagnosis, labs, Xrays, prescriptions that will speed up your memory and save time.
You can also e-prescribe controlled medications with the help of your i-phone.

Cons

It is incredibly over priced. You will still need to pay your biller, or just use Athena as your biller and flush 20 cents (per dollar) down the toilet.
Most of the words and phrases they use come from the computer world, and not the medical world. I would be embarrassed to run a company like Athena.
We are currently looking for a new EMR system to replace Athena.

Athenahealth EHR is a competitively priced solution that has a decent feature set well suited to a individual provider practice. It's integrated billing components, having been the first part of the software developed, is solid.

Went live with Athena on 5/2018 and it has been a bumpy ride since.

Pros

-New modern interface compared to what we were using before.
-Easy to Navigate once a workflow is established

Cons

-Support really isn't that great. I've still got open tickets from months ago with no resolution. Occasionally you'll get someone who can fix your problem on the first call.
-Training is subpar. Previous EMR was here for a month training users. Athena send a few people a couple weeks ahead to train only the superusers. Then they send a few more the week before (3), the week of (8) and the week after(3). Most of those people don't even have the answers. They tend to stick what is in the training but any questions outside of that they have to get back to you on.

Pros

I was esctatic when my co-worker showed me I could access on my mobile device. I wouldn't have to be around my laptop if I needed to check labs or do some quick follow up on my day off.

Cons

But then I tried and tried and tried to log in on my phone. To no avail. Not supported by my browser. I looked at all their advertising for how amazing Athena clinicals is....tried to figure out why I couldn't get it to work for me. Called customer support at Athena only to hear what I dreaded - only supported by iPhones. Why? How in 2018 does a company provide a service that can only be utilized by iPhones!? We operate their Athena EHR in our office on Windows based computers....does not require Macs to operate their EHR, why limit their mobile support to iPhones!??? My advice from tech support, make a suggestion. Anyone else out there who doesn't operate on an iOhine, can you please make a suggestion too!?

Pros

I do not use this software from a clinical perspective. The layout is aesthetically appealing and it has an IM feature to send quick messages. From a reporting standpoint, setting up reports and building them from scratch couldn't be easier. It's very simple to export the reports to excel or Tableau for even better analysis. It does come with prebuilt reports. If you need to create a custom report, there is a report building feature that walks you through the steps. For the most part, Athena does a good job at defining the fields, but sometimes it does require some trial and error.

Cons

Though the software has really user friendly reporting features, sometimes the data itself does not make sense. For instance, we ran a report for no shows and there were instances of 1 no show/0 booked slot. There are also different report categories that include/exclude certain types of data. ie you may not find certain billing data in a clinical category report.

Obtaining insurance eligibility and getting immediate feedback to correct claims prior to submission. Billing software is very good, but then you lose control of the claims since Athena has payments made to a bank account they control.

Cons

Patient notes -- very difficult to make your own templates and what is pre-installed is awkward and missing options. The team that does the billing is unresponsive when there are issues. Support is slow we also had an issue since January, unsolved.
System limitations--you can't message a patient directly--that simple feature is missing. You can't fax most documents from the software, only certain items. Cannot export chart to a fax number--has to be with a pre-existing contact in the software (must ask permission with a form to add a contact).

Cons

It is nice that you can have templates, but when you are entering things into each area of the template, you have to grab the mouse and move it and click where you want it. Some other software programs offer an option like "F2" to skip to the fields that need to be populated. The room assignments work well, but is a little time consuming.

It was kind of confusing at first then after the step by step instructors lead the way. The learning center was not so bad

This is very helpful to help track quality measures for mips and macra

Pros

The step by step process of walking through ge visit is very inclusive. We like the quality measure features, helping us track this for all patients.

Cons

The scheduling and reporting features need work. The scheduling templates are difficult to work with as they are not very flexible. The reporting features are just not good at all as it is difficult to find reports that you need or it's even more difficult to try and build one that you need.

5 years ago, during the quality reporting for reimbursement, Athena made it so simple and easy that i was shocked to learn that it took a fellow friend 2 months to complete her reporting where it took me 30 minutes. providing patients with detailed information on their insurance benefits and the life of claim creates better communication and cohesion for the clinic/patient relationship. as a provider, the easy customization for templates, use of templates and the ability to actively follow medical orders (referrals, lab orders, pharm scripts) and their order created-results received "circular completion" making quick response corrections easier as well. having online doctor information, calculating by type of physician, practice, distance from your location and easy searches is a delightful feature for scribes and physicians alike. i have used an number of EMR systems, web-based and online, and this is by far the best i have ever used.

Pros

from the clerical input, insurance checking/info response, patient input, dx order features, sign off and the visual, detail of the LIFEspan of a claim, orders require "circle completion," the ease of quality reporting requirements...i could go on an on with the amazing functionality features of this program.

Cons

it is expensive, but it eliminates the need to hire for areas of administration. what I would pay for 1-3 people to do, Athena provides an entire team of people, thus creating a quicker turn around time for appeals, the need to call insurance companies. the implementation period is overwhelming, and going live will make you question yourself and your desicion. but, so worth it.

Pros

They work well as a billing company. They have a great work record and always get work done for us quickly. I was always happy with their follow through.

Cons

It is not the cheapest of all billing software. There are some that are cheaper that could maybe do the same service.
