Here at Glendale Memorial Occupational Medical Group (GMOMG), we are pleased to use the Galen EMR and are excited about our upgrade to the GalenMD.Ai. GMOMG is a full service occupational medical center. We have been able to keep our cost of operations down and provide better service due to the implantation of the Galen EMR system. The system is very easy to learn and easy to use. It is a very fast system and has many applications. At our center we deal with urgent care patients, private insurance patient, HMO, pre-employment physical as well as occupational medicine cases.
We enjoy the speed of the system. In our previous EMR, it would take 15 to 20 seconds to open a page and with Galen is almost instantaneous. The Galen team helped in implementation of the system, which was very smooth and seamless. The training was very professional and helpful. As with any systems, glitches do occur, but the support team is there to help you through these glitches.
The new bells and whistles of the GalenMD.Ai are even more promising. Overall, we are very happy with the Galen EMR system and if given the opportunity, would choose the same system again. In fact, we are in the process of opening a second office in Panorama City, California and will be using Galen EMR in the new office. We currently have a third office in Bakersfield, California and are looking to transition to Galen EMR.

I have an urgent care clinic in Fremont, California. We see occupational medicine patients such as injured workers, drugs screens and pre-placement exam, as well as urgent care patients, both with and without insurance.
I thank God every day for GalenMD. I have personalized it so I can document an exam's negative in five clicks. I can go to the "board" and tell how long patients have been in the clinic, who is seeing whom, and what still needs to be done. When a patient calls to speak to me, I can access a patient file and speak to them within five seconds. No more mobilizing three nurses to find the chart while putting the patient on hold.
GalenMD has helped with billing efficiency as well. Because the doctor bills directly with a few clicks, the charges are already entered, and doesn't require our billing team to enter any more charges. Because of the way the program is so intuitively set up, it's very easy to look up patient bills, batching charges, sending ebills and posting payments. My billing department is much more efficient, and I have been able to cut my billing department by one full-time employee.
Because GalenMD is a thin client, we can use virtually any platform to access it. I have desktops, laptops (all the doctors use laptops in the rooms with the patients), and I can even use my iPad.
I think the best part of this program is that I can personalize it incredibly easily. If a doctor wants a charge added, new drugs put into the system, or a PE macro added, I can do it in about 30 seconds. Charges can be organized such that all your potential charges are listed on one menu.
This program also has a very handy feature for occupational medicine clinics, called eGalen. With eGalen, the employers and insurance companies, nurse case managers, etc, can access the work status of their patients directly without having to get on the phone, or speak to anyone in the clinic. They really enjoy being able to access this stuff at any time of day. And it saves the front office from having to field another call.
So far, I have not had any complaints with customer support. I usually get a response by email immediately. I must admit, they have been patient with us. Nine times out of 10, our complaints end up being something we are doing wrong, and not a problem with the system - though of course, we still loudly complain the next time we think something is wrong.
Downsides? I think the worst thing about an EMR is having to scan in documents to the system, though this is still incredibly better than having a paper chart. Once something is scanned in, you know just where to look for it, and can find it in two clicks. And it is always THERE. You aren't flipping through page after page of charts, labs and diagnostics looking for something.
Here is what I tell people who are thinking of going EMR: Expect 6 months of pain while you learn the system. After that, nothing but JOY! I can't imagine going back to paper. With the VPN set up for me by Galen, I can do my charts at home now while watching Law and Order. I can bring up the board while sitting at home on the weekends and see who is in the clinic, and call and ask the staff why a patient is waiting! Sounds like Big Brother, I know, but when they know I am watching, the staff performs much better!
